SPIE Student Chapter Report-2012
Standing on the verge of the sixth year of our journey, the SPIE Student
Chapter continues in its pursuit of diverging OPTICS beyond the
boundaries of classrooms and textbooks. We, the SPIE student members,
have been working persistently towards the objectives of promoting
OPTICS among the graduate and under graduate students as also school
children, through seminars, quiz and outreach activities. We have made
additional efforts to let the students of rural and remote areas to grasp the
basics of optics and realize the potential of Optical Sciences. It is very
encouraging that this year we have successfully organized a sky watching
program named ‘Venus Transit’ using our departmental telescope.
This year many new faces have come forward and have
actively participated in all chapter activities. We wish to continue our
chapter activities under the guidance of our faculty advisor and with 24
young energetic members.
Election of Office Bearers:
The chapter members elected the office bearers through the meeting held
on 5th November, 2012. The new office bearers for the year 2013 are as
follows:

Chapter Activities:
1. Outreach Activity at Sultanpur High School, Ghatal, March 19th
,2012
Outreach activities at the high schools in and around the city have
always been among the core activities of our chapter. Keeping this in
our mind we have started this year with an outreach activity at
Sultanpur High School, Ghatal on 19th March, 2012.

Suvendu demonstrating color mixing
A group of eight members demonstrated various optical principles and
phenomena through models and interactive scientific experiments before a
group of young and unprivileged students, mostly from standards VI to X.
The students closely engaged themselves with the hands-on experiments
and enjoyed the practical way of learning through experimentation and
direct interaction. Both the students and their teachers showed their keen
interest for such an outreach event.

2. Outreach Activities at St. Pauls High School, Kolkata.
June 5th, 2012.
The second outreach program of the year was organized at St. Pauls
High School with a team of seven enthusiastic members and

The entire program was divided into two different sessions. In the
first session, the program was initiated with an interactive lecture by
Dr. Kallol Bhattacharya on different phenomenon of Optical Science.
The second session was a hands-on experimental session. Our
student members demonstrated various laws of Optics through
hands-on experiments. It was rewarding to observe the enthusiasm
of the students and teachers alike, as the text books concepts of
Optics came to life. A large number of students mainly from standard
VII to XII showed their keen interest in the process of learning. The
school authorities very impressed with the program and at the end
of the day it was very satisfying for the chapter members to interact
and satisfy the young students.

3. Hands on Sky Watching program “VENUS TRANSIT” at University of
Calcutta, 6th June, 2012.
We are pleased to report on the success of our endeavour to organize
a sky watching program “Venus Transit” using departmental
reflecting and refracting type telescope. The whole program was
divided into two sessions, consisting of a number of seminars on
astrophysics, basic principles of reflecting & refracting telescopes
and a sky watching program on the next day morning. Professor L.N
Hazra from University of Calcutta discussed the basic principles of
Telescope and Dr. Kallol Bhattacharya (faculty advisor of SPIE
Student Chapter, University of Calcutta) discussed Adaptive Optics. A
lecture on the “Transit of Venus on Sun” was delivered by Prassanna

Deshukh, a SPIE chapter member and also an M.Tech student of
Astronomical Instrumentation course jointly offered by our
University and Indian Institute of Astrophysics, Bangalore. The
seminar session was organised on 5th June, 2012. There were lots of
enthusiastic students from different colleges. Some telescope makers
and enthusiasts were also present in the program. The sky watching
program started at 5:45 am on the dawn of 6th June. A group of
chapter members and energetic students ready with 2 telescopes,
some with filters and some with eyepieces for projections and dark
room setup. Roughly 120 students and few outsiders had visited the
roof top of our Departmental building to enjoy the essence of the
program. The program was an enriching experience, resulting in a
tremendous response from the students, professors and visitors with
requests to conduct many such programs in near future.

4. Outreach activities at Howrah Surendranath School, Howrah,
August 22nd , 2012.
This time some of the new and younger chapter members were
inducted into the outreach team to illustrate and interact with the
school children over the experimental models. A large group of 10
members went out with different sets of demonstrations to meet the
students. The response from their side was phenomenal, with
students from classes VIII to XII turning up in large numbers. The
students showed their keen interest in the study materials and
working models to demonstrate various optical phenomena. The
program was highly appreciated by the concerned teachers and
principal of the school, who expressed their interest in such outreach
activities in near future.

5. Seminar on “Raman Fiber LASER”, University of Calcutta, 4th
October, 2012.
It is our pleasure to report that we had successfully arranged a
student seminar on “Raman Fiber LASER”. The seminar was given by
the ex-student of the Department of applied Optics & Photonics,
named Mr. Srikant Sugavanam. He is a research fellow in Aston
University and he delivered an informative lecture on his work. The
lecture was started with basic principle of fiber LASER and
elaborately dealt with the theoretical calculations & future trend of
research. The seminar was of a different flavour and was thoroughly
enjoyed by the audience.

6. Student Seminar on “A Light Scattering Spectroscopy Based
Approach for Quantification of Tissue Multifractality”, University
of Calcutta, 27th December, 2012.
This seminar was given by one of our chapter member, Subhasri
Chatterjee. She is a research fellow in IISER-Kolkata. The speaker
focused on the technological challenges involved in pre-cancer cell
detection. The lecture elaborately dealt with various areas of Optics
related with Bio-Medical Engineering, experimental calculations, and
future trend of research. A group of students from Bio-Medical
Seminar Session

Instrumentation also attended the seminar. It was a very useful
session for all, as the lecture started from the basic Bio-Medical
Optics and covered the technical issues to detect pre-cancer cell, in a
simplified manner. ‘All well that ends well’ would be the right phrase
to depict the success of the program at the far end of 2012.
