Activities Description
Elementary School Visits Dates: March 31st, September 24th, November 25th of 2011. Responsible members: Liliana Martinez, Juan Gonzalez, Enrique Gomez‐Pablo, Rene Rodriguez, Miroslava Cano‐Lara, Gibraham Graciano, Alma Gonzalez‐Alcalde, Hector Sanchez, Esau Lopez Aguilar. As the past year, our student chapter made different visits to elementary schools from Ensenada, Baja California, in order to wake up the interest of the kids into the optical sciences. This year we made six visits to the following schools: Mtro. Fortino Dávila, La Corregidora, 15 de Mayo, 18 de Marzo, Vicente Guerrero and Adolfo Lopez Mateos. The total audience was about 250 kids between 10 and 11 years old (6th grade of elementary school). In each visit we gave to the students a brief interactive talk of 1 hour (two groups per school). The kids observed some demonstrations of some optical phenomena related with diffraction, polarization and scattering. To this purpose we used the optical kit provided by the Optical Society of America (OSA). To reinforce the kid’s knowledge, we brought to them candies, cookies and beverages, and also a sticker with the pet of our chapter. At the end of the talk, we asked to the kids to make a draw related with the themes that were exposed by the chapter’s members. Without a doubt, these talks help to improve the academic development of the kids, encouraging them to continue with their studies and to develop their scientific skills. Certainly in a few years some of these kids will became great scientist that will help to the development of the science in Mexico and the world.
Movies projections Dates: February, March, April, May, June, July of 2011. Responsible members: Luis Felipe Devia, Eduardo Pisano. In order to popularize science among the student community, we made several projections of scientific documentaries at a classroom of the Optics Department of CICESE.

The documentaries projected were: Los 5 secretos del oficinista (The 5 secrets of the clerk, about Einstein’s life). UNAM Atom I: The Clash of the titans. BBC Atom II: The key of the cosmos. BBC Atom III: The Illusion of reality. BBC The Elegant Universe I: Einstein’s dream. NOVA‐PBS The Elegant Universe II: Strings the thing. NOVA‐PBS The Elegant Universe III: Welcome to the 11th dimension. NOVA‐PBS To enjoy the show, were offered popcorns to attendees during the projections. We had an average attendance of 20 persons in each projection, having the presence of students from CICESE, UNAM and UABC not only from physical sciences, but also from different areas of study.
Vertex Congress 2011 (Congreso Vértice 2011) Date: April 5th and 8th, 2011. Responsible members: Gibraham Graciano, Eduardo Pisano, Ricardo Tellez‐Limon The Vertex Congress (Congreso Vértice) is an annually event organized by engineering students from the Autonomous University of Baja California (UABC). This year our Student Chapter was invited to give a workshop entitled “Optical image reconstruction using the Fourier Transform”, with a 28 students attendance (one of the most popular workshops of the event) from different universities in the state of Baja California.

During this two‐day workshop, students were taught how to reconstruct images using numerical methods based on the Fast Fourier Transform and then to perform the same reconstruction in the laboratory using the so called 4F system by Optical Fourier Transform. The students were very pleased and discussed the possible applications of this technique in the industry.
CICESE Summer School on Optics Date: August 11th, 2011. Responsible members: Luis Antonio Arias, Luis Felipe Devia, Claudia Garcia‐Gil, Enrique Gomez‐Pablo, Gibraham Graciano, Eduardo Pisano, Rene Rodriguez, Imelda Santiago, Ricardo Tellez‐Limon. The Summer School in Optics and Optoelectronics is an event organized every year by the Optics Department of CICESE, in order to invite and recruit undergraduate students of science and engineering across the country. This year, various members of our Student Chapter gave brief talks of 10 minutes to show the contents of their research subjects. This broadened the outlook of the participants regarding the lines of research of the Optics Department of CICESE.
During the summer school, the visitor students developed a scientific project and at the end of the event their works were exposed. In order to encourage them to make a good job, our student chapter awarded the three better presentations with prizes: a Green Laser Pointer to the first place, a 4GB USB Memory to the second place, and a LED lamp with a red pointer to the third place. We also gave them a talk about the activities of the Student Chapter and the benefits they may have if they become members of the global network of student chapters of SPIE (conferences, scholarships, financial aids, etc.).
Optics +Photonics 2011 Date: August 20th to 26th, 2011.

This year our Student Chapter attended to the Optics+Photonics 2011, event organized by SPIE. We made use of the traveler grant given by SPIE, and as CICESE is near to San Diego, California, we decided to use the grant in such a way that we could be able to give this opportunity as many members as were possible. The members of the chapter attended to the Student Leadership Workshop, the Optics Outreach Olympics, the Conferences and the Expo as follows:
Student Leadership Workshop: Ricardo Tellez‐Limon (president), Luis Felipe Devia (vice president) and Claudia Garcia‐Gil (treasurer). Optics Olympiad: Claudia Garcia‐Gil and Gibraham Graciano with the project “Bending the Light”. Congress conferences: Enrique Gomez‐Pablo (awarded with a SPIE scholarship), Gibraham Graciano, Claudia Garcia‐Gil and Luis Felipe Devia. Congress Workshops: Claudia Garcia‐Gil. Expo: Luis Felipe Devia, Cindy Fuentes, Claudia Garcia‐Gil, Enrique Gomez‐Pablo, Juan Gonzalez, Alma Gonzalez‐Alcalde, Gibraham Graciano, Jacob Licea, Rene Rodriguez, Hector Sanchez, Ricardo Tellez‐Limon. During this event the members were able to exchange knowledge about the chapters and the scientific research made by students from all around the globe. Without a doubt it was an incredible experience.
1st Regional Meeting on Optics CREO‐CICESE 2011 Date: September 8th and 9th, 2011. Responsible members: All members. The first regional meeting on optics CREO‐CICESE 2011, held in the Institutional Auditorium of CICESE, was a totally free event for students of engineering and physical sciences in order to expand their knowledge on topics related with optics. This was attended by leading researchers from regional institutions as CICESE, UNAM and UABC as well as two international researchers from the University of Arizona and the University of Carolina – Irvine.

This event was fully organized by the members of the Student Chapter having the financial support of SPIE, OSA and CICESE. The congress consisted of 8 lectures, a mural session, a toast and a closing meal under the following schedule:

For the mural posters session we counted with the presence of 16 projects made by students and researchers from different regional institutions such as UABC, UNAM, CETYS and CICESE. The conferences were broadcasted live via internet to the SPIE Student Chapter of the ITESM Campus Monterrey, and the event memories were also solicited by the Crimean Scientific, Technical and Economic Information Center of the South Library of Crimea, Ukraine. There were 70 persons registered to the event, having an average assistance of about 55 people per conference, which exceeded our expectations. Each attendee received a folder with letterhead papers, a pen, a badge and an attendance certificate of the event.
The first Regional Meeting on Optics CREO‐CICESE 2011 was, without a doubt, the most important event made and organized by our Student Chapter, and surely it will become stronger over the years with the help and participation of all the members involved.

Every year the Sciences Faculty of the Autonomous University of Baja California (UABC) organizes the Sciences Week. During this event undergraduate students from different careers related with sciences, expose outreach projects to students from many elementary, junior high and high schools of Ensenada. Our Student Chapter participated making optical phenomena demonstrations, and also were given stickers, flyers and book separators to the students.
This event allowed us to reinforce the presence of our chapter at the region, creating new relations with teachers of several schools. Also we were able to capture the attention of undergraduate students in order to join to the optical sciences career and, of course, to our Student Chapter.
Expo Pelican CICESE 2011 Date: November 4th. Responsible members: Imelda Santiago, Yazmin Esqueda, Claudia Garcia‐Gil, Antonio Arias, Luis Devia, Eduardo Pisano, Rene Rodriguez, Gibraham Graciano. Expo Pelican CICESE is an annual event organized by CICESE, which is oriented to kids from several ages, and also for general public, in order to show the work made by researchers, Master and Doctorate students from the different knowledge areas imparted at this institution (life sciences, aquaculture, marine ecology, physical oceanography, computational sciences, electronics and communications, optics, earth sciences, physical materials and integral environment administration). This event was attended by more than 600 children from different schools of Ensenada, and about 50 expositors participated from the above mentioned areas.

It is important to note that our Student Chapter was invited directly by the organizers, thus giving an idea of the recognition of our job inside and outside CICESE.

Administration and organization In order to organize the above mentioned activities, we celebrated several meetings. On this meetings were established the main goals of the Student Chapter and the particular objectives of each activity like dates, designated members, ideas and required materials. At the end of each meeting, the directive board summarized the treated points and took decisions about each activity. We also implemented a Facebook group, named “Capítulo de estudiantes de CICESE” (CICESE Student Chapter) at which the members were informed about the activities, funding, results, and news of SPIE. This group also served as a launch pad of the 1st Regional Meeting on Optics (CREO‐CICESE), having a great acceptation of the students community of the region. It is to note that we also bought and designed our own internet domain (http://cicese.org) to put the information about the activities and news of the Chapter, and the information of the 1st Regional Meeting on Optics CREO‐CICESE 2011. The websites are: http://spie.cicese.org http://creo.cicese.org Finally, we decided to give an image to our organization, creating a pet for our Student Chapter: a blue scientific pelican that represents the institutional pet of CICESE (the same that is shown at the front page of this report). We printed stickers with this pet to give children and general public a little present that represents the effort of the Chapter on knowledge spreading. One proposal is to make a “motley” of our pet to improve the visits to the elementary schools and the related activities of the group.

Financial Report In order to make all the activities before mentioned, our Student Chapter received $900.00 dlls from the Chapter Activity Grant provided by SPIE. The expenses made by the Chapter were as follows:

Final remarks The work made by our Student Chapter has been very satisfactory. All the members were able to work as a team and collaborate in a different way, creating new relationships with other institutions and contributing to the scientific development of our region. Belong to the SPIE’s world network of Student Chapters helped us to grow up as students and as persons, understanding that our job is not only confined to the classrooms or to the laboratories. Perhaps the biggest benefit is that we were able to share our work with other persons for the benefit of the society. We want to thank to SPIE for allowing us take part of this great student network and also for the given financial support to make all the activities before mentioned.
