Introduction SPIE DCE Student chapter has now almost finished 3 years since it was started in 2005, the first of its kind in India. The chapter has come a long way since then, and has established itself as one of the most active chapters in the region. Our chapter is unique in the sense that most of our members are undergraduate students and all the council members this time are also undergraduates. Even though the Delhi College of Engineering doesn’t offer a dedicated Optics course, our chapter has always attracted many students from all disciplines. I was elected as the President of SPIE DCE Chapter in March ’07 for and was very lucky to be assisted by a very sincere and industrious council. During this one year I learnt a lot about chapter management as well as event organisation. I am grateful to SPIE for giving me the opportunity to attend the SPIE Student Leadership workshop at O&P ‘07. This workshop allowed me manage my chapter better and also provided me with tips to have various innovative events and activities for the benefit of the students of our college. I am also very grateful to the support extended by Dirk and Jason, who have both been very helpful to us. Dr. R K Sinha, Faculty Advisor SPIE DCE chapter has been instrumental in keeping the chapter active and has also provided the students of our chapter with numerous research opportunities within his Research group. The council is in place for one academic year and as my term comes to an end this March, I am very honoured to give charge to the next SPIE council and am very confident that they will continue working hard and make SPIE DCE achieve even greater success. I wish the next council a very best of luck! Amol Choudhary President 2007-2008 SPIE DCE Student Chapter

23 August 2007 As a first instance of Outreach activities for High School Students organised by the SPIE DCE chapter, Prof Harvey Rutt, Head ECE at University of Southampton delivered a talk “Optics and the Internet” at Delhi Public School, Rohini. The talk was appreciated by all the students present and they were amazed by the impact that the optical fibers have made on our daily lives. Abstract of the talk “The talk introduces the concept of Optoelectronics, the fusion of optics and electronics which is now absolutely vital to modern communications, in particular the Internet. The basic ideas of the scale of information which the modern world needs to transmit, and the speeds at which we must transmit it, are discussed to introduce the requirements of modern high-bandwidth links. The physical basis of those links, the fibre optics, optical amplifiers and dispersion compensation systems essential to its operation, are introduced at a basic, non-mathematical level. Some of the new developments required by the ever growing thirst for data communications, and approaches to them underway at the University of Southampton, are included in the talk. It is intended to be suitable for students typically in their last two years or schooling Pre University, and to non-specialist year University students. It may also be of interest to persons with a general interest in modern IT, and assumes only a general technical background with no specialist knowledge of the subject.”
