2. Travel Grants for chapter members participating in conferences 1 half-year

44-th School at Condensed Matter Physics in S-Petersburg Institute for NuclearPhysics 15-20 March, 2010, S-Petersburg, Russia

Due to the SPIE partial support, this time our members Khrystyna Kutko, Sergey Poperedjay and MariiaPashchenko attend the Winter School for student from Russia and countries of former Commonwealth ofIndependent States. It was good opportunity to tell about existence and work of ours IRE SPIE Student Chapter.This winter school was held in beautiful place. Hotel “Raivola” was located in S-Petersburg region not far from theGulf of Finland in place with dense coniferous forest and picturesque lakes. But not only marvelous winter natureimpress on us, good and qualified lecturers, creative atmosphere and lots of students from different countrieswere the main components of School. It allowed us to make an acquaintance with big amount of students andsuccessfully advertised SPIE and activity of our IRE SPIE Student Chapter.

Ukrainian Conference

Due to support of IRE SPIE Student Chapter members of this chapter had opportunity to visit different UkrainianConferences which was connected with their scientific interests.

17th Open Young Scientists’ Conference on Astronomy and Space PhysicsApril 26 – May 1, 2010, Kyiv, Ukraine.

On this conference Marina Mikhailova had a report: “Influence of low-frequency quasar 3C273 RadioSpectrum on X-ray emission of its kiloparsec jet”.

3. I International Young Scientists Conference on “Low Temperature Physics”(Jun 7-11, 2010)

General Information

The 1-st International young scientists conference “Low Temperature Physics” was held traditionally at theInstitute for Low Temperature Physics and Engineering of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (ILTPENASU). This year ICYS-LTP-2010 was covered both 50-th anniversary of Institute for Low TemperaturePhysics and Engineering and 50-th anniversary of ADVANCING THE LASER .Traditionally, the maingoals of the conference, as a previous years, were to help young scientists and students from different researchinstitutes and universities to get in touch with each other, to listen to review talks on hot topics presented byleading scientists, and to try their own skills in scientific presentations. This first international conference ICYS-LTP-2010 gathered over 150 young scientists. Most of them were from different parts of Ukraine, 15 from FSUand European Countries as well as Czech Republic, Germany, Russia etc.

As usual, session on Optics and Photonics (OP) was held due to the support of OSA/SPIE JointChapter of Institute of Radiophysics and Electronics and with the support of IEEE MTT of Institute ofRadiophysics and Electronics.

Optics & Photonics session as it was:

Invited talks–This year we have rare opportunity to listen 3 excellent lectures in frame of invited lecturer program. First ofall we are thankful to our Student Chapter’s Advisor Prof. Sergii Tarapov for his lecture “THETRANSPARENCY OF LEFT-HANDED MATEIALS: EXTRA-HIGH FREQUENCYEXPERIMENT”. The logical continue of this was lecture of other invited speaker Andrea Alu. Hisparticipation in our conference became possible due to the OSA Traveling Lecturer Program. He presentedlecture named “OPTICAL NANOANTENNAS: MATCHING, TUNING AND WIRELESSCOMMUNICATIONS IN THE VISIBLE” Both this hot topic lections was very interesting not only forparticipants but for lead scientist too. Due to the SPIE Traveling Lecturer Program the participants of the conference were able to hear theexcellent lecture of Prof. Katarina Svanberg, Department of Oncology & Lund University MedicaLaser Centre, Lund University, Sweden “DIAGNOSTICS AND TREATMENT OF TUMOURSUSING LASER TECHNIQUES”. This lecture was held for two session simultaneously, for both Optics& Photonics session and Biophysics session. It was amazing lecture, so bright and clear. Lecture of KatarinaSvanberg attracted interest not only a young participants and scientist, but also medical workers fromKharkov’s medical center of radiology. 4. The contest on the Best Young Scientist Presentation inOptics and Photonics Award ( 8 June 2010 )

In frame of Optics and Photonics session at I International Conference for Young Scientist “Low TemperaturePhysics –2010” was held the Contest on the best Young Scientist presentation in Optics and Photonics field.During the Optic and Photonic session 2 best reports was chosen. The lead scientist of Institute in Optics fieldwas invited as Independent judges. One of them was our Advisor Prof.Sergii Tarapov. Our Joint IRE OSA &SPIE Student Chapter prepared special prizes for winners. It was Special certificate, Flash-discs and moneyprize: 200$ for 1-st place and 100$ for 2-nd place. And, of course, for Optics and Photonic sessionparticipants from the other city were organized a travel grants.The next people become winners:1-st plase for oral report “TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED KINETICS OF GROWING AND RELAXATIONOF ALCOHOL CLUSTERS IN ARGON MATRIX” Doroshenko IrynaIrina was awarded by the Katarina Svanberg – president elect of SPIE. We were much favoured with this.

5. Young Scientists Workshop (8 June 2010)

Last year we start a good tradition to hold Young Scientist Workshop in Round Table format. This timeYoung Scientist Workshop was devoted to 50 Years: ADVANCING THE LASER. In addition, thisWorkshop pursues one's object – show students their perspectives and how science can be applied to thelife. Lection “Thermal imaging system and their application” and special demonstration of this system wasvery interesting and extraordinary for our student. And of course lecture of Katarina Svanberg was very usefulfor students who involved to Optics and relative discipline. 7. LASERFEST Activity

This year our IRE SPIE Student Chapter took part in great program devoted to 50 Years: ADVANCING THELASER. We tried connected celebration of 50 anniversaries with some educational activity. First of all ineducational part we put lectures of Invited speakers for O&P session on the IYSC – LTP – 2010 on the list of ourLaserFest activity. Each of our invited speakers somehow notices this remarkable event.Than, in frame of IYSC – LTP – 2010 we decided to celebrate this Birthday with huge sweet cake - 10 kg withfresh fruits, cream logotypes and bright legend. This cake was free for all participants of IYSC-LTP- 2010 in honorof anniversary. Sweet photos of this you can see below:

Then time for educational program came. Group of students from Kharkov Polytechnic Universityvisited Institute for Low Temperature Physics in frame of Day of open doors. Head of our educationaldepartment told students about history of Institute and about Famous inventions in science, and alsoabout Invention of Laser:

Only after this Lection we showed students laboratory for Raman spectroscopy. Our lead scientistValeriy Fomin told and demonstrates for students how the equipment works.

A bit letter, in outmen, when some of these students came to our Institute as PhD students, we usedpromotion materials LaserFest back packs with mirrors, lathers and other useful devices.
