ON CAMPUS ACTIVITIES

November 2010.

Start-up and presentation

On February 1st

we began with the chapter activities; the first was an informal meeting that included all members. We proposed and discussed ideas about the future activities to do. We also enjoyed some drinks and snacks.

Recruiting new members

During a general exposition that occurred on the last part of the second trimester of the year, we posted a stand with general information such as papers, magazines, pamphlets, pointer lasers and some gifts in order to show the benefits and motivate the students of being a part a SPIE student chapter.

There was not only optics students but also electronic and physics students that were interested in the chapter.

Visiting lecturer

The second week of August we were proud to have the visit of Prof. Lothar Lilge from the University of Toronto. He gave the lecture/curse: “Introduction to Biophotonics” with duration of 4 days. It was focused to undergraduate and graduate students. It was totally successful because we had some invited students from many universities.

Later he visited the Optics-CICESE laboratory where he saw all the experiments developed by students with guidance of Dr. Santiago Camacho and Dr. Raul Rangel.

OFF CAMPUS ACTIVITIES

Science and Engineering Week in University of Baja California, Ensenada (2009)

The first week of May, in the week of engineering and science were presented to university students to different topics of optical and physical, this in order to encourage young people to participate in science activities.

We had the visit of Dr. Raul in UABC, who exposed a talk to the topic “: “50 años de la invensión del láser”.

Science Week in University of Baja California, Ensenada (2010)

Some chapter members assisted to the science and engineering week in the University of Baja California, Ensenada to participate in a demonstration of optics experiments and motivate of the students to physics and optics topics.

One of our current activities is to collaborate in the organization of Science Week in University of Baja California, Ensenada that will take place in August and for which we invited all students of the city.

Chapter activities other than attending workshops and conferences related to science is also supplied to viewers visual material on the chapters and topics of greatest interest for optical.

Besides, they could interact each other and learn new physic concepts and understand others.

Assistance to the first Mexican chapters convention

On September, four chapter members went to the Mexican Chapters Convention in León, Guanajuato. This meeting had the presence of many chapter students from different parts of México. Here we argued and shared some experiences that could help each other to manage our chapters properly. In this meeting assisted chapters from Monterrey, Guadalajara, León, Ensenada and Puebla.

Optics outreach

We visited 4 different elementary schools and show the children some optics and physics experiments, in these demonstrations we used an optic KIT that was provided by OSA. Phenomena like diffraction, polarization, chemical and physical properties of the matter were explained with understandable examples.

“Matías Gomez” elementary school

This was very interactive for children and they said that was very nice.

PLANNED ACTIVITIES FOR THE FUTURE. For the period from December of 2010 to November of 2011, the activities to make are as following: Visit to elementary schools and high-schools. The goal of these visits is to wake up the interest of the students in matter of science and its everyday applications. In these visits will be imparted a brief interactive talk with school materials and simple experiments that allow the students to understand some optical phenomenon such as the diffraction and polarization of light, and the applications of the optics in technology. The visits are programmed for the months of February, April and June of 2011, expecting to visit six schools (three elementary schools and three high-schools) reaching at least, a total of 300 students. Attend to the engineering and science weeks of the UABC. The Autonomous University of Baja California (UABC) as a part of its activities, every year organizes three meetings during a week each one, to show to the general public the activities and projects that are made by the students of the engineering and science areas. The attendance to these events is of more than 200 students and more than 200 external visitors. That is why the chapter will participate once again, to invite the attending students to join to the optical sciences, informing of the courses, activities and projects that are developed in CICESE. To reinforce these goals, the chapter’s members will provide some experiments and demonstrations of several optical phenomenon related with the courses of the students of the UABC. These workshops are programmed for the months of April and October of 2011. Summer school of optics and optoelectronics CICESE 2011. Every year, CICESE organizes the summer school of optics and optoelectronics. This event is attended by at least 20 students of different universities of Mexico. The goal of the summer school is to invite to the students to become master students of the optics department of CICESE, by living a two week experience with professors and students of the research center. During the two weeks the students receive talks, courses and laboratory practices, and each one develop a final project with the assistance of a professor. We pretend to use the officer travel grant for this event, so a researcher of another University of the world could give a workshop or conference to the students of the summer school and the students of the department of optics of CICESE, such a way that this can perform the education of the attending students. The summer school will be made in August of 2011. 1st Regional Meeting of Optics CICESE 2011. With the purpose of giving know the activities developed by the students and researchers of CICESE and other institutions of the region, we pretend to organize the 1st Regional Meeting of Optics. In this event the researchers and professors of the invited institutions will impart conferences, and the attending students can show their own projects of related topics with optics participating in mural sessions. At the end of the event, the participants will receive a documented assistance proof.

Page 13: Anual Report 2010 CICESE-SPIE Student Chapter

As this is the first time that will be done an activity of this kind at CICESE, the duration of the event will be of one or two days, depending on the number of received projects. The expected attendance is at least of 30 participants. The event will take place at CICESE and the organization will be in charge of the chapter’s members. This is the most ambitious goal of the chapter for 2011 year, expecting that the event will serve as an opportunity to make new professional and academic links between the participant institutions of the region.
