St. Francis of Assisi Parish, Sacramento, has an opening for a full-time Director of Faith Formation. This is a large, vibrant parish with Faith Formation Programs for pre-K through adults. Under the direction of the Pastor, the Director of Faith Formation is responsible for building catechetical teams to implement all aspects of the programs, including sacramental preparation, recruitment and training of catechists, and curriculum. The Director of Faith Formation also collaborates with the Director of Liturgy as well as the Principal and staff of St. Francis Elementary School on Faith Formation activities. Applicants should possess proven leadership skills and the ability to work effectively with children, parents, clergy and parish lay leadership. Training and education: Basic Catechist Certification (Master Catechist Certification preferable); B.A. in a related field with M.A. desirable. Salary and benefits based on experience/education. Today’s Gospel is the continuation of last week’s Gospel. It forms part of what is called the Farewell Discourse in which Jesus attempts to inform the disciples that he must soon leave them. He reassures them that even though he will soon leave them, he will not leave them friendless or alone, he will not abandon them. Instead he will send them the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, through whom the disciples will continue to live in union with him and the Father. We are approaching the feasts of Ascension and Pentecost when we will focus on the coming of the Holy Spirit into our lives and the life of the Church.
Jesus uses the term Advocate to describe the Holy Spirit, whom he will send upon the disciples and the Church. Advocate in this context means the same as another word used to describe the Holy Spirit - Paraclete, a legal Greek term that means “one who offers defense or testimony for another.” Note that Jesus says that he will send “another Advocate’. Jesus himself is the first advocate, interceding for his disciples with the Father. Jesus contrasts his impending departure with the permanence of the gift of the Holy Spirit. He will return to the Father, but the Holy Spirit will remain with the disciples.
Next weekend (May 27-28), we will celebrate the Feast of the Ascension. The traditional day of celebration was on the 40th day after Easter, which gives us Ascension Thursday. This observance has been transferred to the nearest Sunday in most parts of the world for many years. However it is still celebrated on the traditional Thursday by many dio-ceses on the East Coast of the US. People with missals which are printed for the whole US, for cost reasons, will notice that the books give two celebrations. Apart from the East Coast, the 7th Sunday of Easter is not observed.
Blessings and congratulations to the children and their families who will receive the Eucharist for the first time at our Masses this weekend. Congratulations also to the graduating 8th grade class from our Parish school, and may God continue to bless them and their family on their transfer to High School.

While this prayer has always been attributed to St. Francis, the author is actually unknown. The prayer does wonderfully represent the spirit of St. Francis and Franciscan Orders.

There is no doubt that St. Francis Parish is a special
place. We are very blessed to have such a welcoming, inclusive and vibrant parish for our spiritual home. Fr. Des and all of the parish
staff—and our many volunteers—work very hard to make St. Francis Parish what it is, and we are all grateful for their efforts. This time of year, however, we have the opportu-nity to do more than just be grateful! Our Parish Council Elections will be held the weekend of June 3/4. We all have different gifts to bring to the table but, unfortu-nately, for many of us the thought of running for election is a little bit outside our comfort zone. If being part of the Parish Council is something you would like to do, don’t let a little anxiety get in your way! Go ahead and throw your hat into the ring and see what happens! The Parish Council is an elected body of 15 parishio-ners. Council members serve a term of three years. The Parish Council’s mission is to help bring the concerns, the hopes, and the ideas of the parish to Fr. Des. Work-ing together with Fr. Des and the Parish Staff, the Coun-cil helps to discern what God is calling us, as a parish, to do. A good example of this was the Pastoral Action Plan that gave us a blueprint to follow in the areas of Evangelization, Outreach, Liturgy/Spirituality, Facilities, Parish/School Relationship, and Finances.

eaSTer STaTIONS OF The LIghT FIve In today’s Gospel, we hear Jesus describe the Holy Spirit as the Spirit of Truth. In the news today, we are learning all sorts of adjec-
tives that label--what shall we say--levels of truth. The Truth that Jesus speaks of is not polite, reserved, or whimpy. God’s Truth brings change and compassion, it cannot be scaled up or down to our liking. Scholars call this section of John’s Gospel “the final discourse.” In our present time of graduation speeches, it might be consid-ered Jesus’ Valedictorian Address. If a national news channel picked you to interview, that would be the message of your Valedictorian Address? Would you be a finger-pointer? Would you be a skeptic, saying that “it’s all go-ing to hell in a hand basket?” Would you focus only on positive, hopeful wording? Would you just sit in silence, and let your silence be your address? Each of us is allowed the gift of living in the Spirit of Truth. How do you plan to live this out during the upcoming week? When you are given the opportunities, formally and informally this week, what tone of words are you going to use in speaking the Spirit of Truth? Two more week until Pentecost. Two more weeks to enjoy re-flection and practice listening to the Spirit of Truth, and taking right action when necessary.
