A man who has been in Japan for several years our guest of the month is a French Professor in Tokyo and also a theater director In this interview Professor Martinel a native from the French island of Marti-nique opens his heart about his professional and cultural activities in Japan As a sales representative for ldquoRhum Heacuteritiers Madkaudrdquo he will also teach us more about rum and the many different ways in which

we can enjoy it

RVAM Professor Martinel could you please tell us about your position as a sales representative for ldquoRhum Heacuteritiers Madkaud AOCrdquo in Japan

Louis-Solo Martinel As a sales representative for ldquoRhum Heacuteritiers Madkaudrdquo in Asia my mission is to promote the brand in Japan and around Asia The adventure began 3 years ago whereby our Japanese distributor (Three Rivers) did a great job because products are now being distributed in shops bars and restaurants We also participate in major events featuring rum such as Japan Rum Connection (Kanto Kansai) Yokoha-ma Rum Festival Japan Caricom Caribbean Street and rum parties We also organize our own events for professionals or the general public We want more people to discover our prod-ucts (white old VSOP) and to appreciate the many different ways to enjoy them long-drink (with juice soda cola and milk) traditional short-drink (dry ti-punch old)

At the same time we hope to introduce a bit of Martiniquersquos culture along with its gastronomy A beautiful product in sub-lime elegance such as rum must be presented together with the land where it comes from its culture its food and its at-mosphere Many professionals throughout Japan have already opted for our Madkaud rums and serve them to Japanese and foreign customers in a variety of cocktails accompanied with food cigars co ee music ambiance so that it enhances the tasting One could say that I am an Ambassador for Rum and my home country is Martinique that I love

RVAMWhat brought you to Japan

Louis-Solo Martinel Professional reasons and academic reasons I am a teacher of FLE (French as a Foreign Language) So I teach French language and francophone cultures to foreigners As a professional Japan is my country of adoption I am also researching on the works of the famous Greek-Irish author Lafcadio Hearn who became naturalized Jap-anese under the assumed name Koizumi Ya-kumo Before coming to Japan he spent two years in Martinique He wrote essays novels collections of tales recipes songs proverbs Here in Japan I am looking for original manu-scripts or unpublished documents to complete my research I write a lot about his work (arti-cles books)

RVAMYou are a university professor a lecturer You are also active in the theater scene as a director an actor

Louis-Solo Martinel I am a university pro-fessor in Japan teaching French language and also francophone literatures This is my offi cial profession which comes with a lot of extracurricular activities that takes most of my free time day and night Like any good teacher I am also a researcher Consequently this has turned me into a translator and broadcaster of cultures both in Japan and globally I go to conferences symposiums and seminars I publish articles or reviews in papers or maga-zines I also write books On the cultural side the artistic side theater is my passion my sec-ond nature Thatrsquos why I am equally involved in theater activities I run the Fuji Scene Fran-cophone theater company that I founded more than ten years ago And every year we stage one or two plays from the French moderns or classics or from the international repertoire (text author world) often with an interna-tional cast A play can be staged according to its universe its author in French English Japanese Spanish Creole Brazilian Arab or one of the African languages You can add Af-rican songs Creole tales or Japanese elements I also challenge myself into adapting texts that were not originally written for theater such as novels movies stories poems or songs My shows combine theater poetry fi lm dance and music We have achieved quite a lot over the past ten years

Louis-Solo Martinel How nice of you to say this I see that you are a real fan Thanks to you and the Rendez-vous En Asie magazine for its support Our audience is French native language Japanese and very international Our shows are always subtitled creating a heavy load on our budget It is quite diffi cult to produce francophone performances in Japan A lack of fi nancial resources slows down most of our projects We are now reorganizing in order to fi nd new part-ners Allow me to make an appeal here We are in need of funds but never short of projects or ideas Let me tell you a secret When I started Fuji Scegravene Francophone I had a list of all the plays I wanted to stage It was a kind of con-tract I drew with myself So far I have honored 80 of this contract So I still have many texts in stock and even added newer ones to the list 2016 is Shakespearersquos 400th anniver-sary I am planning something based on Macbeth and Lady Macbeth by the end of the year so I hope I will be able to gather the necessary resources

RVAM What about the Japanese people Are they enthusiastic about rum Can Japanese people travel easily to Martinique

Louis-Solo Martinel Unfortunately Airfares are quite expensive from Japan to Martinique but things are improving prices will keep falling and more tours operators will offer Martinique as a destination for Japanese people to spend a vacation

RVAMWhat are the major cultural or sporting events in Mar-tinique that would appeal most to the Japanese people

Louis-Solo Martinel There are major international cultural fes-tivals in the capital of Fort-de-France and neighboring seaside re-sorts like Le Marin Some of them are thematic like dance festivals theater storytelling music (jazz Latin jazz beguine jazz Afro Caribbean and traditional fests) We also have sport competitions (football handball tennis) Martinique is the host country for the 31th CARIFTA Games The Davis Cup takes place in Guadeloupe our neighboring island There are nautical events (surf wing surf-ing sailing rowing Route du Rhum Transquadra transatlantic races) Some events are at the major international level such as semi-marathon cycling tour of Martinique (the 2010 winner was a Japanese national Shimizu Miyakata) There are events one shouldnrsquot miss such as Martinique Caribbean Carnival rum festi-val traditional Christmas carols Tour des Yoles (traditional boat) The Martinique Creole cuisine can be addictive too It includes mixed fl avors of African Asian European and Caribbean tastesTalking about gastronomy I will tell you about my favorite dishes desserts and restaurants in MartiniqueCheck out my favorite dishes the popular Ti-nain (green bananas) and dried cod the fi erce avocado revisited as a lollipop sheep co-lombo with Indian spices the ancestral matoutou crab on a Creole bed of rice a spicy Caribbean lobster all very mouth watering Let us not forget the court- bouillon Creole (bouillabaisse) or blaff bo-kay (local acqua pazza) And now my favorite desserts the typical blanc manger with a few drops of coconut-rum (Madkaud) on a mango coulis with a mini tropical fruit salad and an iced chadec stick (big local grapefruit) or orangette I canrsquot name them all There are too many I would recommend Le Bredas at Saint-Joseph city and his chef MrBredas or chef Ravin from the Blue Bay Res-taurant who recently won a star in Guide Michelin But there are hundreds of places where you can eat delicious food in MartiniqueAnd try Bambou or Coconut Pousse (young leaves hearts) at Tafi a my favourite Rum bar in Tokyo

RVAMAnd all these delicious dishes should be accompanied by good rum I suppose

Louis-Solo Martinel Yes the agricultural rum AOC Martinique label and preferably ldquoMadkaudrdquo of course Oh Ah By the way rum connoisseurs and professionals named Martinique the Land of Rum and also the World Capital of Rum At international fairs the best Martinique rum regularly wins most of the awards As you can see in our brochures Heacuteritiers Madkaud Rum has also won many medals (gold silver bronze) in recent years around the world (Paris Moscow Hong Kong Madrid and Berlin)

The 20th biennial FESTIMA the largest Inter-national Art and Mask Festival in West Africa took place in the town of Dedougou 250km west of the capital Ouagadougou Hundreds

of traditional masks from six countries - Benin Ivory Coast Mali Togo Senegal and 50 villages of Burkina Faso came to life during the festivalMasks have been an important part of traditional ani-mist beliefs in many African cultures for thousands of years Made of leaves straw wood and textile the masks symbolize the worship of ancestors and spirits They play an important role during commemorations of rites and the cycle of life

According to traditional beliefs during the ceremony the frantic music and dancing transforms the entranced mask wearer into a spirit which communicates its with ancestors A wise man or translator sometimes accom-panies the wearer of the mask during the ritual helping to interpret the ancestorsrsquo messageldquoOf course these masks are not given full power dur-ing the festivalrdquo one musician explained during a break ldquoOtherwise you would not even be able to photograph them nothing would show up in the picturerdquoA month earlier the capital of Burkina Faso was dev-astated by terrorist attacks claimed by al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) and Al-Mourabitoun which left 30 dead and 56 wounded from 18 different nation-alitiesKi Leonce executive director of ASAMA the Associa-tion for the Protection of Masks said the attack left the country shocked because Burkina Faso which literally means ldquothe land of honest peoplerdquo is known for its reli-gious tolerance and peaceful attitudesldquoThere are two aspects about masksrdquo he continued ldquoOne is cult and the other is culture there might be a religious confl ict for people who venerate masks but there is no confl ict from the cultural point It is our cul-tural patrimony every African every Burkinabe shares it and we should not allow other people to dictate our way of thinking but preserve our cultural heritagerdquoDuring the festival masks were incredibly alive and some tourists attended despite the attacks ASAMA is hoping to obtain funds to invite even more nations and masks to participate in the festival in 2018

伝統的な信仰者によれば儀式の間熱狂的な音楽と舞踏が仮面をつけた人の魂に入り込み祖先とコミュニケーションをしていると言います賢人や媒介者はときどき儀式中には仮面の装着者に付き添い祖先のメッセージを通訳することを助けますrdquoもちろんフェスティバル中はそれらのマスクに全部の力が与えられることはありませんrdquoと休憩中に１人の音楽家は説明してくれましたrdquoそれ以外にも彼らの写真を撮ったとしても写真には何も写りませんrdquo

一ヶ月ほど前にブルキナファソの首都はテロリストの攻撃によって荒廃させられました３０人もの死者と５６人もの怪我人は１８もの異なる国籍の人たちですアルカイダ系のAQUIMとAl-Mourabitoun が犯行声明を出しましたASAMAの上級ディレクターでありマスク保護協会のKi Leonce氏は「高潔な人たちの国」と言われるブルキナファソにショックを残し宗教的寛容さと平和的な態度の重要さを知らしめたと述べました

It is that special time of the year again when faces light up and owers bloom A great time when people rock to the beat of the same drums creating an excitement essential for o setting the everyday hustle and bustle of the Japan hard-working environment Spring is a time for a joyful noise with new beginnings as we all re ect on the cold winter

we had to endure People of all walks of life visit Japan to witness some of the most colorful and amazing events throughout the entire region

e festival season will open in Tokyo coinciding with the ldquoOne Love Festivalrdquo at Yoyogi Park and the African Festival in Yokohama Akarenga Red Brick in early April ough there are many amazing festivals such as the ai and Brazilian festivals among them there is no doubt that over the years the African Festival and the One Love festival has created a brand that has transcended globally In talking to many foreigners from around the world there is de nitely a feeling that Japan as a whole has become more culturally diverse and accepting We hope that this will continue within the years to come regardless of political agendas as we are one people of the human race
