HistoryShortly before the end of the 19th century sportsmen in the town of

Orsett found themselves getting to the age where cricket and tennis

would soon become a bit strenuous. This being the case they decided

to start taking part in the sport of Golf. They started hitting old gutty

balls about in a meadow about a mile south of the village to the west of

Chadwell road near the Orsett Cock, not far from where the club now

exists.

Their new found love of golf saw them look across the road to Mucking

Heath, where the unspoilt terrain and natural turf seemed to be the

perfect base to erect a course. The tenant soon gave the men permission

to set up some rough greens on the heath land. A small hut was also built,

which would have stood to the right of the present eighth tee.

A visit by one Captain Francis Whitmore to the Royal North Devon Club

saw the men converse with the Captain and decide to open a golf club

and in 1899 Orsett Golf Club was born. There was originally confusion as

to the name of the club some called it ‘Linford and Mucking links’ whilst

others decided to refer to it as ‘Grays and Mucking Golf Club’. The name

Orsett Golf Club was given to the club in later years to come.

History Continued

The course was designed by the famous course designer James Braid and

was firmly embedded into this piece of the Essex countryside. In the early

years Orsett became the focal point for the local community to gather

and enjoy their golf; even through the hard times of two world wars. The

first medal was won in 1904, when the club had 20 full-time members,

and lady members were introduced to the club in 1905.

After the rigours of the First World War the Club started to find its feet

and continued to flourish. In the late 1920s the Clubhouse was built and

James Braid extended the course.

Now in more modern times the course thrives, having managed to

keep much of the course in its original state. In recent years Orsett

has established itself as a regional qualifying course for The Open

Championship on 11 occasions.

About the CourseOur spectacular course was designed by the legendary James Braid and

is scenically etched into the stunning Essex countryside. Since its opening

in 1899 it has been a focal point for locals to come and enjoy their golf,

whilst mixing with others who share their passion for the sport.

Situated just five miles from the M25 and with excellent transport facilities,

our Par 72 Championship course offers a demanding yet rewarding test

across its 6,682 yards.

Offering a stern challenge, the course has been recognised by players

across the country and has been chosen as the regional qualifying course

for The Open Championship no less than 11 times.

We are renowned for our quick draining soil which allows for play come

rain or shine. The established heath-land course combined with the

numerous hours spent by our green keeping staff to keep the course in

Hole-by-hole GuideHole 1 – Par 5, 525 yards

A long drive is required off the tee to carry over the rough, favouring the

left side is advised. The long hitters may be tempted to go for the green in

two but will need enough club to avoid the large fairway bunkers.

Hole 2 – Par 4, 442 yards

If you hope to score on this challenging par 4 then a good drive is essential.

The low lying green means that players are advised to play one club less

on a deceptive second shot.


With bunkers surrounding the green an accurate shot is required just to

make par. Over or under hitting your tee shot will give you a tricky two

shots to save the hole. Beware of the tilting green which leaves a difficult

downhill putt.


This tricky par 4 requires players to think more about accuracy than

power to find the straight and narrow fairway. Distance control is vital on

your second shot to hit the right area of the longest green on the course.

Leaving your ball too short or long of the pin will see you have to make

a tough putt to score.


Hole-by-hole Guide Continued


With eight bunkers on this hole to avoid is it essential to find the fairway

if you are to attack this short par 5. A line on the right of the fairway will

give you the chance to go for the green in two and make a birdie.


An tight, undulating fairway means an accurate tee shot is necessary on

our signature hole. A birdie on this hole is a definite possibility if you can

keep your shots accurate.


A straight and long drive will see you safely on the fairway, now it’s only

a matter of negotiating the six bunkers en route to the green. The long

hitters may be tempted to go for the putting surface in two leaving a

possible eagle opportunity open to those brave enough to take it.


An extremely tough par 3 includes the smallest green on the course.

Three deep bunkers to the front of the green can cause trouble for those

who don’t use enough club.




It is best to favour the left of the fairway which kicks right. The front of

the green is well protected so it is a good bet to take a little more club,

an undulating green awaits your birdie putt.


Dare to flirt with the ridge at the end of this fairway, anything left and

you will be laying up short. It is important to hit your second shot with

correct club to ensure you are putting on the correct level of this two

tiered green.


The big hitters will definitely be able to go for the green in two, but will

have to navigate the nine bunkers that stand between themselves and the

hole. Slopes in front of the green mean you may not be able to count on

the role of the ball to see you find the cut stuff.


This picturesque par 3 can throw a spanner in the works. A large two-tier

green can offer up a birdie opportunity but if you miss the green then

prepare to get your sand iron out as four bunkers and a haven of rough

surround the hole.

A drive towards the left of the fairway will give you the best view of this

green that slopes away from you. A birdie chance awaits if you can hold

the green with your second shot.


A famous hole which used to have a 3 bedroom cottage next to the

green has been re designed in recent years. Favour the right of the sloping

fairway to avoid your view being blocked. A one-putt is a rarity on this

up-turned saucer of a green so don’t get greedy.


Consistently the toughest par 3 on the course this hole plays longer than

its yardage and a tricky green awaits you following your tee shot. The

main danger is a group of three bunkers short of the green on the right

hand side.


A long, straight, drive off the tee will need to carry the two fairway

bunkers this leave you in a good position on your approach shot, anything

short of this green will be swallowed up by the huge bunker that slits

the fairway, a general rule is to play your second one club longer than its

yardage.

This fairway provides a lot of twists and turns but a straight tee shot

should give you the opportunity to reach the green in two. The well

protected green slopes heavily from back to front and is surrounded by

bunkers.


Always playing longer than its yardage the 18th is a card wrecker. A

straight tee shot leaves a second to a flat green and can reward you with

the chance to end your round in some style infront of the Clubhouse..

Memberships Continued

The Club has retained a joining fee for the over 26’s, however, there

are different options for paying this. The joining fee for new members is

£1250 but to make the club more accessible for all the fee can be paid

over a period of five years. The Club have introduced another option,

you can pay a one off Joining Fee of £250 and your subscription payments

would incur a 5% surcharge for the first 10 years of membership.

Playing CategoriesMen’s Section

The largest section in the Club with over 400 7 day playing members. We

have regular and varied competitions throughout the year with our main

competitions starting in late February and concluding in Mid October.

Our named competitions are always played on a drawn basis which

gives all members a chance to play with one another. Our men’s section

always field very strong sides in all of the Essex County Golf Union team

events winning the premier Thornton Cup on no fewer than 5 occasions.

Throughout the week we have a number of strange named sweeps/roll

ups that play, anyone is welcome to join to play in any sweep be it the

SAS, Cocoons, GRASS, Unigate or the S Club46! Many of these sweeps

play interclub matches against one another. The men’s section continue

to grow and with fantastic opportunities to join with NO joining fee up

until the age of 26 there has never been a better time to join the premier

members Club in Essex.

Juniors Section

The Junior section is the future of our Club and we continue to attract

many youngsters to the game. With competitions held every Tuesday

throughout the school holidays there is plenty of opportunity for all of

the children to interact with one another. We hold an annual planning

evening to held the youngsters set goals and also an end of year prize

presentation which is attended by many parents and all the officers of

the Club. With the Club having achieved the Golf Mark award it confirms

our ongoing commitment to the development of the game at the grass

roots level.

Playing Categories Continued

VETS Section

The veterans section is open to all members of the Club aged 55 and

over who are either retired or semi-retired. Meeting every Wednesday

morning they will often have in excess of 35 players throughout the

year, they are a hardy old bunch, however, you are guaranteed a toasted

teacake after your game. With regular inter cub matches, as well as

several trophy events it is the strongest section within the Club. The

Veterans run a very popular Open competition each June that is always

oversubscribed.

Ladie’s Section

The Ladies section at Orsett Golf Club is beginning to grow again, with

a warm, welcoming attitude to all. Meeting every Thursday the Ladies

at Orsett maintain an aged old tradition of all gathering afterwards

within the dining room, eating together and hosting a small presentation

for each week’s winner. The Business Ladies meet each weekend with

a supporting competition enabling competitive golf for all. The Ladies

enter into all of the Essex Ladies Team events fielding no less that 5

teams each year, they receive fantastic support from one another and

have proved successful on several occasions. The highlight of the year is

always the Ladie’s Captains Day which entails much work from everyone

in dressing a Buggy, Halfway Houses as well as each other! The ladies

also host a very popular Open event which continue to grow year on

year, it is anticipated we will have a waiting list for entries once again this

year. With a new “Buddy System” now in place any new members are

guaranteed a consistent point of contact they can always go.

Visitors InfoWhatever your requirements, Orsett Golf Club has the staff, course and

infrastructure to ensure you enjoy your visit; be in on the course or in

the clubhouse.

All visitors are welcome to Orsett Golf Club during the week but we

advise calling our pro shop before your visit to check the availability of tee

times. The rate for 18 holes is £45 unless you have a County Club Card

in which case the fee is reduced to £25.

Dress Code & Standards

At Orsett Golf Club we pride ourselves on our high standard of dress

code. To ensure you have an enjoyable time with us we ask that you

comply to our dress codes and standards available on our Club website.

Tee Bar and Restaurant

The Tee bar is open from 8.00am daily and is the perfect place to sit and

enjoy a full English breakfast, quick snack, or one of our daily specials,

either before or after your round. For the comfort of our guests, golf

clothing and golf shoes may be worn in this part of the clubhouse.

Alternatively guests can take their snacks or drinks out onto our patio

which offers a spectacular view of the 18th green and beyond. This area

is non-smoking to allow guests, visitors and members to enjoy their meals

under our sun parasols; however whilst we can assure stunning views we

cannot guarantee the sunshine.

Private Functions whenever there is availability. For a refundable deposit

of £50.00 you may book the Clubhouse for your own use, Birthdays,
