Heworth Golf Club, situated in the historic cathedral city of York, promises golfers of all abilities an invigorating challenge on our course and the warmest of welcomes in our clubhouse.

We are a well-established members club but although we celebrated our centenary in 2011, our attitude is forward-thinking rather than old-fashioned.

The golf course, which is situated only a mile and a half from the city centre, is a parkland course with tight fairways, small greens and a substantial number of mature trees of diverse species.

The course layout allows for the flexibility to play a full round or 9 or 11 holes. Stretching to 6,133 yards from the white tees, it may be considered relatively short by todays standards, yet is a definite test and it is not easy to burn it up .

Visitors and golfing groups are very welcome. The courses location close to the centre of York makes it an ideal place to while away a morning or afternoon whilst ones partner discovers the shopping highlights and culinary delights of the historic city centre.

After your round take some time to experience Heworths renowned hospitality and remember we cater for private functions too. Come and pay us a visit and you will discover why we like to think of ourselves as Yorks friendliest golf club .

    Welcome

  • 6 \ 2012 Heworth Golf Club

Heworth is blessed with a delightful parkland course which offers an enjoyable golfing challenge to players of all abilities.

At 6,133 yards from the mens competition tees it may not be as long as some courses, but with trees lining many of the fairways and the greens containing some subtle borrows and being smaller than average in size, this is a layout where the thoughtful golfer is rewarded. Accuracy, correct club selec-tion and a good short game are more important qualities to possess than being able to smash the ball in excess of 300 yards from the tee. The Standard Scratch Score of 69 matches the par from the white tees, another good indication that the course is no pushover.

The secret of a successful round isstraight hitting and accepting ones punishment when in trouble. The four par three holes are rated as the toughest par threes in the York Union of Golf Clubs. The courses antiquity is reflected in the quality of the greens.

There are eleven holes but in a full round eighteen holes are played. Playing several holes for a second time offers the chance to learn from any mistakes made first time around!

    Our Course

Members do not generally need to book a tee but should ensure that there are no competitions or other events taking place at the time of their choice. It is easy to find out whether competitions are happening by checking the fixtures page on our website, www.heworthgolfclub.co.uk, or by looking at the fixtures noticeboard next to the putting green. The Professional will be very happy to advise you if you are unsure about whether you are able to go out to play golf.

There are three differently coloured tees:

White Mens competition tees. Total yardage 6,133, par 69.

Yellow Mens non-competition tees. Total yardage 5,982, par 70.

Red Ladies competition and non-competition tees. Total yardage 5,459, par 71.

For those members looking to work on their game there are two areas for practice situated either side of the 10th and 11th holes. There is also a green provided near the clubhouse for putting practice only.

Prepare for your visit to Heworth by familiarising yourself with each hole over the coming pages and make the most of your round with our hole-by-hole guide. You can prepare yourself for the challenges that are in store, as well as pick up some invaluable playing tips from our PGA Professional, Fraser Kelley.

    Hole 1, 330 yards, par 4

A friendly opening hole, with a tight tee shot through an avenue of trees. You play to a generous fairway which is shared with the 18th. A good tee shot is the key to setting up an easier second shot into a small well-pro-tected green with three greenside bunkers to catch any wayward shots.

    Hole 2, 203 yards, par 3

This is a difficult par three for all golfers. At over 200 yards it is a demanding golf hole, protected with greenside bunkers at either side of a narrow green, with plenty of mature trees providing an attractive backdrop.

    Tour the Course

  • Heworth Golf Club 2012 / 9Heworth Golf Club 2012 / 9

    Hole 3, 361 yards, par 4

A good par four, with a wide fairway which gradually narrows as the hole develops. A straight tee shot is vital as trees make for a narrow exit from the tee. A very undulating fairway makes the approach shot difficult. Missing the green to the right-hand side makes for a tricky up and down for all levels of golfer .

    Hole 4, 319 yards, par 4

A slightly blind tee shot, where you must play over a small ridge to a narrow fairway which is guarded by trees on either side. A good tee shot will set you up with a mid to shorter iron but be careful as the front of this green is guarded by two large bunkers.

    Hole 5, 336 yards, par 4 (pictured)

A demanding tee shot to the fairway which is protected by obstacles - a water hazard running across the fairway and trees which cut in on the left. Position is the key to set up an approach shot to this elevated green but be careful not to miss the green to the left as it quickly falls away into the rough.

  • 10 \ 2012 Heworth Golf Club10 \ 2012 Heworth Golf Club

    Hole 6, 433 yards, par 4

A very undulating fairway which falls into a large hollow means that even a good tee shot will find a difficult lie on this strong and demanding par four. On your approach to the green a water hazard runs diagonally across the fairway. The green is slightly elevated from front to back with a greenside bunker on the left-hand side.

    Hole 7, 446 yards, par 4

Again another strong par-four hole being well over 440 yards. A good shot off the tee is required as you must carry both a pond and area of rough before you reach the fairway. A ditch runs down the right-hand side of the fairway and there is a large copse of plum trees on the left. As the fairway runs up to the green it always leaves a demanding ap-proach shot to play with a banked area on the right and a large grass bunker to the left it is not a green you want to miss.

    Hole 8, 132 yards, par 3

A pretty par three with a double McKenzie green. You play slightly diagonally from the tee to the back elevation with trees protect-ing the back of the green and a small grass bunker to the right. However, your troubles start when you are on the green - with many undulations most putts are difficult.

  • Heworth Golf Club 2012 / 11

    Hole 9, 463 yards, par 4

A very strong par four, over 450 yards, but it does have a generous fairway. Running along the side of the main road the fairway is heavily treed on either side which gives the appearance of it gradually getting narrower. Once you work your way up the fairway you are met by a large green protected by two greenside bunkers on either side.

    Hole 10, 223 yards par 3

A good par three, very demanding at over 220 yards. You play down to a heavily guarded green there are two bunkers running diagonally across the front of the green towards the left and there is a greenside bunker on the right. Beware of the pond on the right of the fairway as it may catch wayward shots.

    Hole 11, 330 yards, par 4 (pictured)

A dog leg hole running from left to right. Position is the key playing over a large gorse bush from the tee down the avenues of trees onto the fairway. The water hazard of the pond on the right comes into play at only 150 yards from the green. As you approach this green it slopes strongly from back to front with many shots coming up short. Again greenside bunkers protect this area on both sides of the putting surface. Beware of being too long as shots over the fence at the back of the green are out of bounds.

  • 12 \ 2012 Heworth Golf Club

    Hole 12, 335 yards, par 4

A good par four with a generous fairway which gets gradually narrower as the hole develops. An undulating fairway can make for a tough second shot. The small green is a tough target missing it left or right makes for a difficult up and down.

    Hole 13, 313 yards, par 4

A narrow tree-lined fairway that calls for a straight tee shot. The second shot to the green can be difficult to stop whilst running the ball onto the green is tricky as the narrow entrance to the green is protected by two greenside bunkers.

    Hole 14, 346 yards, par 4

Playing from an elevated tee, this dog leg runs from right to left. The ditch across the hole may easily trap poor tee shots. Approach shots to this elevated green are difficult as the green falls away sharply on the left-hand side. Many second shots fall short into the bowl in front of the green.

    Tour the Course (continued)

  • Heworth Golf Club 2012 / 13Heworth Golf Club 2012 / 13

    Hole 15, 419 yards, par 4

A good par four. Many tee shots may be trapped by the partially treed old tramways on the left and right-hand sides. The dip containing the ditch can prove deceptive when making ones club selection for ap-proach shots to the elevated green.

    Hole 16, 443 yards, par 4

The most demanding tee shot on the course played from an elevated teeing area driving over a large pond. The hole is a strong dog leg right to left with a large copse of trees on the left-hand side. The elongated undulating green is flanked on the left-hand side by a sunken area that can prove difficult to escape with any degree of accuracy.

    Hole 17, 145 yards, par 3

Another great par-three hole. You play to the lowest level at the McKenzie green which can be a slightly blind shot. The green is protected by three bunkers two on the right and one immediately in front of the green. It is always better to be longer than short.

  • 14 \ 2012 Heworth Golf Club

    Hole 18, 508 yards, par 5

The longest hole on the course and the only par five. A long straight tee shot is required as it is a genuine three-shotter to reach the green. The fairway is protected with many mature trees. On your approach to the green there are many undulations which make the shot more difficult. The green is very large but guarded by large sand traps on both sides.
