Heworth Golf Club, situated in the historic cathedral city of York, promises golfers of all abilities an invigorating challenge on our course and the warmest of welcomes in our clubhouse.

We are a well-established members club but although we celebrated our centenary in 2011, our attitude is forward-thinking rather than old-fashioned.

The golf course, which is situated only a mile and a half from the city centre, is a parkland course with tight fairways, small greens and a substantial number of mature trees of diverse species.

The course layout allows for the flexibility to play a full round or 9 or 11 holes. Stretching to 6,133 yards from the white tees, it may be considered relatively short by todays standards, yet is a definite test and it is not easy to burn it up .

Visitors and golfing groups are very welcome. The courses location close to the centre of York makes it an ideal place to while away a morning or afternoon whilst ones partner discovers the shopping highlights and culinary delights of the historic city centre.

After your round take some time to experience Heworths renowned hospitality and remember we cater for private functions too. Come and pay us a visit and you will discover why we like to think of ourselves as Yorks friendliest golf club .

    Welcome

  • 6 \ 2012 Heworth Golf Club

Heworth is blessed with a delightful parkland course which offers an enjoyable golfing challenge to players of all abilities.

At 6,133 yards from the mens competition tees it may not be as long as some courses, but with trees lining many of the fairways and the greens containing some subtle borrows and being smaller than average in size, this is a layout where the thoughtful golfer is rewarded. Accuracy, correct club selec-tion and a good short game are more important qualities to possess than being able to smash the ball in excess of 300 yards from the tee. The Standard Scratch Score of 69 matches the par from the white tees, another good indication that the course is no pushover.

The secret of a successful round isstraight hitting and accepting ones punishment when in trouble. The four par three holes are rated as the toughest par threes in the York Union of Golf Clubs. The courses antiquity is reflected in the quality of the greens.

There are eleven holes but in a full round eighteen holes are played. Playing several holes for a second time offers the chance to learn from any mistakes made first time around!

    Our Course

  • Heworth Golf Club 2012 / 7Heworth Golf Club 2012 / 7

Members do not generally need to book a tee but should ensure that there are no competitions or other events taking place at the time of their choice. It is easy to find out whether competitions are happening by checking the fixtures page on our website, www.heworthgolfclub.co.uk, or by looking at the fixtures noticeboard next to the putting green. The Professional will be very happy to advise you if you are unsure about whether you are able to go out to play golf.

There are three differently coloured tees:

White Mens competition tees. Total yardage 6,133, par 69.

Yellow Mens non-competition tees. Total yardage 5,982, par 70.

Red Ladies competition and non-competition tees. Total yardage 5,459, par 71.

For those members looking to work on their game there are two areas for practice situated either side of the 10th and 11th holes. There is also a green provided near the clubhouse for putting practice only.

  • 8 \ 2012 Heworth Golf Club8 \ 2012 Heworth Golf Club

Prepare for your visit to Heworth by familiarising yourself with each hole over the coming pages and make the most of your round with our hole-by-hole guide. You can prepare yourself for the challenges that are in store, as well as pick up some invaluable playing tips from our PGA Professional, Fraser Kelley.

    Hole 1, 330 yards, par 4

A friendly opening hole, with a tight tee shot through an avenue of trees. You play to a generous fairway which is shared with the 18th. A good tee shot is the key to setting up an easier second shot into a small well-pro-tected green with three greenside bunkers to catch any wayward shots.

    Hole 2, 203 yards, par 3

This is a difficult par three for all golfers. At over 200 yards it is a demanding golf hole, protected with greenside bunkers at either side of a narrow green, with plenty of mature trees providing an attractive backdrop.

    Tour the Course

  • Heworth Golf Club 2012 / 9Heworth Golf Club 2012 / 9

    Hole 3, 361 yards, par 4

A good par four, with a wide fairway which gradually narrows as the hole develops. A straight tee shot is vital as trees make for a narrow exit from the tee. A very undulating fairway makes the approach shot difficult. Missing the green to the right-hand side makes for a tricky up and down for all levels of golfer .

    Hole 4, 319 yards, par 4

A slightly blind tee shot, where you must play over a small ridge to a narrow fairway which is guarded by trees on either side. A good tee shot will set you up with a mid to shorter iron but be careful as the front of this green is guarded by two large bunkers.

    Hole 5, 336 yards, par 4 (pictured)

A demanding tee shot to the fairway which is protected by obstacles - a water hazard running across the fairway and trees which cut in on the left. Position is the key to set up an approach shot to this elevated green but be careful not to miss the green to the left as it quickly falls away into the rough.

  • 10 \ 2012 Heworth Golf Club10 \ 2012 Heworth Golf Club

    Hole 6, 433 yards, par 4

A very undulating fairway which falls into a large hollow means that even a good tee shot will find a difficult lie on this strong and demanding par four. On your approach to the green a water hazard runs diagonally across the fairway. The green is slightly elevated from front to back with a greenside bunker on the left-hand side.

    Hole 7, 446 yards, par 4

Again another strong par-four hole being well over 440 yards. A good shot off the tee is required as you must carry both a pond and area of rough before you reach the fairway. A ditch runs down the right-hand side of the fairway and there is a large copse of plum trees on the left. As the fairway runs up to the green it always leaves a demanding ap-proach shot to play with a banked area on the right and a large grass bunker to the left it is not a green you want to miss.

    Hole 8, 132 yards, par 3

A pretty par three with a double McKenzie green. You play slightly diagonally from the tee to the back elevation with trees protect-ing the back of the green and a small grass bunker to the right. However, your troubles start when you are on the green - with many undulations most putts are difficult.

    Tour the Course (continued)

  • Heworth Golf Club 2012 / 11

    Hole 9, 463 yards, par 4

A very strong par four, over 450 yards, but it does have a generous fairway. Running along the side of the main road the fairway is heavily treed on either side which gives the appearance of it gradually getting narrower. Once you work your way up the fairway you are met by a large green protected by two greenside bunkers on either side.

    Hole 10, 223 yards par 3

A good par three, very demanding at over 220 yards. You play down to a heavily guarded green there are two bunkers running diagonally across the front of the green towards the left and there is a greenside bunker on the right. Beware of the pond on the right of the fairway as it may catch wayward shots.

    Hole 11, 330 yards, par 4 (pictured)

A dog leg hole running from left to right. Position is the key playing over a large gorse bush from the tee down the avenues of trees onto the fairway. The water hazard of the pond on the right comes into play at only 150 yards from the green. As you approach this green it slopes strongly from back to front with many shots coming up short. Again greenside bunkers protect this area on both sides of the putting surface. Beware of being too long as shots over the fence at the back of the green are out of bounds.

  • 12 \ 2012 Heworth Golf Club

    Hole 12, 335 yards, par 4

A good par four with a generous fairway which gets gradually narrower as the hole develops. An undulating fairway can make for a tough second shot. The small green is a tough target missing it left or right makes for a difficult up and down.

    Hole 13, 313 yards, par 4

A narrow tree-lined fairway that calls for a straight tee shot. The second shot to the green can be difficult to stop whilst running the ball onto the green is tricky as the narrow entrance to the green is protected by two greenside bunkers.

    Hole 14, 346 yards, par 4

Playing from an elevated tee, this dog leg runs from right to left. The ditch across the hole may easily trap poor tee shots. Approach shots to this elevated green are difficult as the green falls away sharply on the left-hand side. Many second shots fall short into the bowl in front of the green.

    Tour the Course (continued)

  • Heworth Golf Club 2012 / 13Heworth Golf Club 2012 / 13

    Hole 15, 419 yards, par 4

A good par four. Many tee shots may be trapped by the partially treed old tramways on the left and right-hand sides. The dip containing the ditch can prove deceptive when making ones club selection for ap-proach shots to the elevated green.

    Hole 16, 443 yards, par 4

The most demanding tee shot on the course played from an elevated teeing area driving over a large pond. The hole is a strong dog leg right to left with a large copse of trees on the left-hand side. The elongated undulating green is flanked on the left-hand side by a sunken area that can prove difficult to escape with any degree of accuracy.

    Hole 17, 145 yards, par 3

Another great par-three hole. You play to the lowest level at the McKenzie green which can be a slightly blind shot. The green is protected by three bunkers two on the right and one immediately in front of the green. It is always better to be longer than short.

  • 14 \ 2012 Heworth Golf Club

    Hole 18, 508 yards, par 5

The longest hole on the course and the only par five. A long straight tee shot is required as it is a genuine three-shotter to reach the green. The fairway is protected with many mature trees. On your approach to the green there are many undulations which make the shot more difficult. The green is very large but guarded by large sand traps on both sides.

Heworth has all the component elements in place to ensure that beginners are given a firm foundation on which to build a solid golf game and that good players are inspired to take their game to the next level.

If you have the desire to get better, our teaching Professional Fraser Kelley has the application to determination to help you achieve your goals, whatever they are.

A selection of 30-minute lessons are available, covering any area of the game you wish to work on, from driving the ball with power and precision to the more delicate skills of chipping and putting.

If you have an important competition coming up or you have a normally dependable technique which has let you down for some inexplicable reason, then the 15-minute quick fix fits the bill perfectly.

While Fraser takes very much a hands-on approach to his teaching, he is happy to embrace technology as well and can offer the use of video analysis so that you can picture more clearly the parts of your swing which you perhaps need to work on.

On-course lessons are also available, which not only allow you to pick up some pointers on your technique but also gain invaluable insight into how to think like a professional and hopefully score like one too!

    Getting a Handicap

There are many compelling reasons to play golf but one of the major advan-tages it has over many other sports is that it is easy to measure your improve-ment on a day-to-day or week-to-week basis right through the course of a career .

An additional benefit of the handicap system is that it allows people of all ages and abili-ties to compete on an equal footing.

Getting a handicap is easy and at Heworth, as at other golf clubs, it opens up a whole host of golfing opportunities to our members.

Once you have a handicap you can enter club competitions, play in club matches, play in York Union competitions and join in any social groups who play competitively. You can also play in Open Days at other golf clubs.

  • 22 \ 2012 Heworth Golf Club

Members at Heworth enjoy a full programme of competitions throughout the year, both playing against each other and at home and away against other clubs. Whatever the fixture, matches are always keenly contested but played in a friendly and amicable manner.

    Men

Heworth is proud to have been one of the four founding members of the York Union of Golf Clubs which was formed in 1931. Now numbering 14 clubs, this organisation offers its members competitive team golf both in leagues and in a great many trophy competitions which are run throughout the golfing season.

There are a plethora of honours board competitions for men at Heworth to enter throughout the year. Space does not permit listing them all individually, but among the most noteworthy is the Club Championship, which is played over 36 holes and open to those with a handicap of 17 or below. If matchplay is your preferred form of combat, you are well catered for. There is the Forster Cup for low handicappers and Jackson Cup for the higher handicappers, both singles knockout events.

Monthly medals are usually held on the first Saturday of the month from April to October and mid-monthly medals run through the second week of each month.

    Members Golf

  • Heworth Golf Club 2012 / 23Heworth Golf Club 2012 / 23

There are various groups of men who meet at various times during the week for informal golf. New members are welcomed by all these groups. Format of play varies between the groups and on different days depending on numbers playing, but generally most groups play for a small stake!

Players usually assemble on the putting green, with partners usually decided by drawing balls. This makes these informal gatherings a great way for new members to quickly be integrated into the club.

Generally, groups go out at 8am and noon on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, with extra groups also playing at 8.30am, 9am and noon on Saturdays

    Ladies

Most home competitions for the ladies take place on Tuesdays. The ladies competition schedule is just as full as that of their male counterparts with numerous trophies to be played for during the course of the season.

In addition to internal competitions the ladies also have B team fixtures, both home and away, with teams from across Yorkshire.

Finally, there are a number of regular friendly matches against other clubs. Currently these are against Pike Hills, Forest of Galtres, Swallow Hall, Kilnwick Percy, Aldwark Manor and Heworth Gateshead.

It is important to note that there are no restrictions on when ladies may play the course and there are various opportunities for social golf. The main time the ladies play is on Tuesday morning but there are other times as well, such as Tuesday afternoons, Thursday mornings and Sunday afternoons. The format of competitions varies, with often only 11 holes being played.

The members at Heworth are a friendly group and mixed golf is a big part of club life. There are several mixed pairs competitions offering the chance of silverware, featuring a variety of formats.

    Seniors

The older members of the Heworth golfing community are also very well catered for. Our Seniors are known as the EGGS, which stands for Elderly Gentlemens Golf Section.

A large number of friendly fixtures are held throughout the season, affording the op-portunity to play on some of the areas other delightful courses. These matches live up to their friendly name: winning and losing is immaterial, with the emphasis on enjoying the game and good company both on the course and afterwards in the clubhouse.

The Seniors Championship is one of the most coveted trophies on offer to those Heworth members aged 55 or over. There are other competitions held within the club and the York Union of Golf Clubs also runs several events specifically aimed at veteran golfers.

Heworth has its own junior section featuring players of all ages, abilities and levels of experience and backed by the support of its own dedicated junior organiser .

Young golfers are warmly welcomed and our very reasonably-priced junior subscriptions permit play at any time subject to course availability. At an annual rate that works out little more than 2 a week for the under-16s, it really does represent outstanding value.

There are several competitions run at the club specifically for our younger members. Among these are the Junior Championship, an 18-hole individual medal, and the Arnott Trophy, an individual stableford.

The benefits of golf to young people are many. It can result in the forging of new friendships, fuel a sporting passion that can last a lifetime or even bring out physical or mental attributes that have gone

undiscovered. At Heworth, we recognise that our juniors are our full members of the future and without them we would ultimately have no club .

Junior improvement programmes can be created to suit the needs and aspirations of each individual and there are also beginner classes aimed at teaching children the basics to enable them to get out and enjoy the game as quickly as possible. Learning sound fundamentals at an early age means many years of frustration on the course later in life can be avoided!

    Visitors

Heworth welcomes visitors to come and play our courses seven days a week. We represent an ideal venue of quality and choice for all standards of player and juniors, adults and seniors are all made to feel equally welcome.

Special twilight rates are available to those with some flexibility in their schedule able to play later in the day when the course is at its quietest .

We are a forward-thinking club, but we do hold some traditional values and ask visitors to respect our rules and standard golfing eti-quette to ensure their visit runs as smoothly as possible .

In common with other clubs we do insist on a minimum standard of smart casual dress at all times. Denim is not permitted and correct golf shoes must always be worn on the course .

Although handicap certificates are not mandatory, we do prefer golfers to be of a sufficient standard for them to be able to enjoy their round.

It is advisable to phone the Professional on (01904) 422389 to check course availability. There is usually no need to book a tee time. Details of current green fee rates and special offers can be found on our website, www.heworthgolfclub.co.uk

Heworth is an historic golf club with a rich heritage dating back to the founding of our club in 1911. We know we have something special here and nothing gives us greater pleasure than to share the enjoyment of our lovely course with people who may not have experienced it before .

One of the ways in which we can do this is by staging a number of open competitions throughout the year aimed at golfers from all walks of life and all abilities.

The open season generally begins towards the end of April with a Seniors Open, which is a fourball betterball stableford competition for players aged 50 and over.

The ladies get their chance towards the end of May with the Ladies Open, again a fourball betterball event played with stableford scoring.

Another Seniors Open is held at the beginning of August, with the season concluding in September with a mens Am-Am event for teams of four .

Competitions can vary slightly from season to season, though there is usually something appealing on the calendar. For instance, in 2012 the club organised an Am-Am event to coincide with celebrations marking the 800th anniversary of York becoming a self-governing city.

You will find details of upcoming events on our website, together with information about how you can reserve your place.

BAD NEWSTAX DOESNT END WHEN YOU DIESorrybut its the painful truththe biggest tax bill you get can be when youre dead and buried

Most people are brassed off with the two certainties in life death and taxes. But its a real bummer when they both come at once! Yet death tax thats the tax payable if youre worth more than 325,000 quid when you die is pretty much voluntary. How come, then, the tax man takes billions of pounds in this tax from ordinary people (or even extraordinary people hes not bothered) every single year? Theres a few reasons why people dont do something about this, (some are better than others). Heres a few:

    - They dont want to lose control of their money

    - They are confused about complicated schemes

    - They dont know who to trust to get reliable advice

    - They dont want anybody to get their money, ever- Theyre not planning on dying

    - They wanna take it with em

Well, we havent figured out a way to take it with youas my dear old Grandma used to say they dont make pockets in shrouds. But we do know lots of simple ways to avoid this tax AND keep control. We can explain your options, without any gobbledegook, so YOU decide who gets your money, not the Government. After all, they havent got a good track record in spending it wisely have they? But why should you trust us to fix this problem?

Which - the consumer organisation - says you should only seek advice from advisers with advanced accreditations in this subject and weve got em all! (Most havent)
