Welcome to Bath Golf Club

Bath Golf Club is an 18-hole private members’ club situated on Hampton Down above the beautiful and historic city of Bath. It is one of England’s oldest and finest downland courses, and is considered by many the premier golf club in Bath and North East Somerset and one of the top courses in the West Country. Established in 1880, it quickly earned and has kept its reputation as a welcoming club with a thought-provoking course.

Whether you are an established player or just starting your golfing career, we offer a wide range of membership options.

We are also popular with societies and organisations wishing to arrange a golf day. We have an active social programme, with a wide variety of events being

enjoyed at the Club throughout the year, and are also happy to host functions such as wedding receptions and birthday parties.

On behalf of the management board, members and staff, may I offer you our warmest welcome. We all look forward to seeing you enjoying your golf.

Anthony Roberts, Club Manager

The Course and its History

Bath is one of the finest and oldest courses in England. Originally laid out in the 1880’s using the natural contours of its hilltop location, it was redesigned in 1937 by the legendary course architect, Harry S. Colt, and now measures over 6,500 yards with a par of 71.

The course is full of variety and is laid out over fine golfing country. Springy downland turf over shallow soil and limestone ensures rapid draining and the course is usually in superb condition. The greens present a special challenge, being relatively small and containing hidden, and sometimes not so hidden, borrows.

Affectionately known as “Sham Castle” by the locals, the course earned its nickname from the neighbouring architectural folly. The ‘castle’ stands in a field next to the course and although it looks like the entrance gate to an impressive baronial hall, is in fact nothing more than a single wall. It was built during Bath’s 18th century heyday at the request of wealthy Ralph Allen from his own Bath stone in order, as he himself wrote, “to charm all visitors to Bath”.

7www.bathgolfclub.org.uk

We are therefore able to offer history, tradition and one of the best golf courses in the South West of England. In 2010, Bath Golf Club was featured in Golf Monthly. The journalist, a great fan of Harry Colt, was thrilled at the prospect of playing one of Harry’s courses. He spoke highly of numerous exciting holes and an extremely friendly clubhouse and wrote: “The excellent course at Sham Castle was no disappointment. In fine condition and perched high up on Hampton Down it has panoramic views down over the Georgian City and across the Avon Valley”.

The Club is committed to continually improving the course through the efforts of our Head Greenkeeper and his staff, investing in the latest equipment and methods. They work hard to present a course that is in excellent condition throughout the year. We are fortunate to have a limestone-based soil that drains well in the wetter months, but retains moisture in the drier ones, helped by water sprinklers round the greens and tees.

9www.bathgolfclub.org.uk

The Course and its History continued...

Nature lovers will delight in the plants and wildlife on the course, with managed wild meadows alongside many fairways, flowers such as orchids, and birds including nesting skylarks, buzzards and hunting peregrine falcons.

The course is also a rich archaeological landscape. There are the boundaries of a prehistoric field system, providing useful distance markers on some fairways, a large early Iron Age hilltop enclosure with an entrance in front of the ninth tee, and the bomb-like craters of 18th century surface stone quarrying on a number of holes.

Playing Golf at Bath Golf Club

As a private members’ club, we pride ourselves on catering for all golfing needs. Competitions are held regularly for all our membership categories. We have a number of teams playing formal and informal matches against other clubs including men, ladies, mixed, seniors and juniors.

There are several roll-ups during the week, offering all members the certainty of a game and a chance to meet other members.

We recently introduced booked tee times, which have proved a success, offering members the security of knowing they have a tee time, and the ability to avoid crowded periods. Some times are left open to cater for those who prefer not to book.

We welcome both individual visitors, and societies and corporate golfers. A range of green fees and packages is available. For more information see the separate section on societies, visit our website or contact the office.

The Spirit of Competition

For many people, one of the principal reasons for joining a club is to test their prowess against their peers. Here at Bath we provide plenty of opportunities for this, with competitions throughout the year for individuals and teams, and matches against other clubs. Here is a taste of what’s on offer to members:

Men

• Regular Saturday competitions for trophies and cash prizes in various formats (medals, Stablefords, foursomes and four balls, Bowmakers and Texas Scrambles)• Knockout matchplay competitions for singles, foursomes and four balls• Club matches: a chance to play in a league against other clubs, both home and away

• Friendly competitions with a variety of roll ups for all ages. A block tee time is reserved and anyone is welcome to join in. It’s a good opportunity to meet people; teams are drawn to ensure a good mix• Captain/ProChallenge:thechancetoplayafour ball match against the Club Captain and the Professional• Seniors: anyone aged 55 or over is eligible regardless of handicap level, to play in Seniors competitions and also in friendly matches against other clubs, followed by a modestly-priced dinner• Nomads: offers those unable to play during working hours the opportunity to play in friendly matches against other clubs, teeing off late afternoon, followed by dinner• Open and invitation competitions: when we welcome players from other clubs.

Mixed

There are eight mixed competitions during the year. Those who do not have a regular partner are encouraged to team up with other members. We also play several friendly matches against other clubs in the area.

Juniors

The Club has a flourishing Junior section with around 50 members. We hold over 20 competitions during the year plus two regional open events and matches against other sections of the Club.

During the summer term there are free coaching sessions with one of our qualified professionals, designed for new and beginner golfers and open to members and non-members. All year round, Head Professional Russell Covey and his staff hold regular coaching sessions designed to introduce our junior members to the many aspects of the game and all the benefits of playing. For more advanced players there is team coaching and we play matches against local clubs in the Bristol & District Alliance.

Golf can be a difficult game to master, even for the professionals who play the game for a living, and more so for average golf club members with so many other calls on their time. Professional tuition, combined with dedication and practice, can improve your enjoyment of the game and help get your handicap down.

Our resident professionals cater for all types of golfer, using the very latest techniques including launch monitor technology, slow-motion shutter speed cameras and custom-fitting charts from the

top manufacturers. They believe in simple tuition, and between them have taught all levels of golfers. Russell Covey, our Head Professional, is the Somerset Ladies and Girls county coach and also first team coach to the University of Bath.

On-course tuition is a vital tool in our coaching and sessions can be booked seven days a week.

Lessons are available to members and non-members and can be arranged through the Pro Shop.

Ladies’ Section

The ladies’ section is a friendly, well-supported group of over 100, many of whom play every week. They are an integral part of the club, but have their own committee and organise their own competitions and events. All ages and handicap ranges are welcomed, and the focus is on being inclusive by providing a varied calendar of qualifying competitions, fun and team events, knockout trophies and other opportunities to play golf at whatever level a member prefers. New members can be allocated a mentor who will help them to find their feet quickly,

Tuesday mornings are reserved for ladies’ competitions, though these can also be played on an alternative day. Most ladies come in for refreshments after their game. It’s a great way to meet other

members and feel part of the club. We hold a coffee morning in early spring, always well attended by members and others from nearby clubs, to raise funds for our chosen charity; this is also a good time to shake off the winter and put dates in the diary for the season’s competitions.

There are also plenty of opportunities to help, by getting involved with running the mixed golf events, open competitions and social events, or on the committee.

We are very welcoming to new members, so if you are thinking of joining a club in the area, please contact our Club Manager to arrange a visit and meet one of the Ladies’ Committee.

Bath and the Cotswolds

Nourished by natural hot springs, Bath offers a unique experience with stunning architecture, great shopping and iconic attractions.

Situated at the southern end of the Cotswold Way, the golden city of Bath has been welcoming visitors for over 2,000 years.

Designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site, Bath is home to some of the most impressive architectural sights in the world including the Royal Crescent, the Circus and Pulteney Bridge.

At the heart of the city, next to the Abbey, is the Roman Baths Museum, which gives a fascinating insight into the original bathing complex and the great Roman temple of Sulis Minerva. Above the Museum in the 18th century Pump Room you can taste the waters, enjoy a meal and

listen to music from the Pump Room Trio.

The Cotswolds region covers an area of 790 square miles in South-West England and is the country’s largest officially designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Popular with both the British and visitors from all over the world, the area is well known for gentle hillsides (‘wolds’), outstanding countryside with river valleys, water meadows and beech woods, sleepy ancient limestone villages and historic market towns.

Throughout the Cotswolds, stone features in buildings and walls and provides a common thread, seamlessly blending the historic towns and villages with the surrounding landscape. The countryside is seen as ‘typically English’, as though time has stood still for 300 years.
