Although I

do not have much spare time, and my golfing ability does not stretch

very far, there is little I enjoy more than being able to play a round on

this beautiful local course.

Established at the start of the last century in this Area of Outstanding

Natural Beauty, Ellesborough Golf Club was once a part of the

Chequers Estate the land was leased to the Club and this land

now forms the opening 9 holes of the course.

Because of this historic association with Chequers and, indeed, as

a condition of the original lease, Honorary Membership is granted

to the Prime Minister of the day and courtesy of the course granted

to any of their guests staying at Chequers. Both Clement Atlee and

Harold Wilson were regulars at the Club and both became members

after their Premiership ended. Former US President Bill Clinton has

also seen fit to admire both the course and the views it offered over

the beautiful countryside.

Having celebrated their centenary in 2006, I wish the Club many

more years of success in providing a service to the community

and an opportunity for all standards of golfer be they beginners,

enthusiastic amateurs like myself, or more experienced stalwarts

of the wonderful game to play in such magnificent surroundings.

The Rt Hon David Cameron MP

Foreword by the Prime Minister

05

Everyday we save our customers upto 40% on vehicle servicing costs compared to some franchised garages without affecting their manufacturers warranty.

We pride ourselves on having a proven track-record and with over 35 years experience servicing vehicles you can trust us to look after all of your motoring needs.

7In the heart of the Chiltern Hills, with stunning views over the Oxford

plain and under the shadow of the Coombe Hill monument, lies one

of the most beautiful 18-hole courses in the area Ellesborough Golf

Club. The Chilterns have been designated as an Area of Outstanding

Natural Beauty and Ellesborough certainly maintains the promise of

that title.

One of the major benefits of this 18-hole, chalk downland course,

is the excellent drainage which allows play all year round on regular

tees and greens.

The variety of holes on the gently undulating landscape offer a

challenge to golfers of all levels, with greens that have long enjoyed a

reputation as some of the finest for miles around.

The beauty of the views draws many a visitor and the hospitality in

the clubhouse will finish a round of golf that brings players back time

after time.

Welcome to Ellesborough Golf Club

07

High Quality Private Dental Treatment Member of the British Dental Association Good Practice Scheme

Five Dentists Four Hygienists (Monday-Friday)

Visiting Oral Surgeon

TreatmentsFamily Dentistry

General Restorative & Cosmetic DentistryTooth Whitening with Safe and Predictable Results

Oral Surgery and Dental Implants

Same day emergency appointments for our registered patientsEarly morning and evening appointments available

Opening times Monday 8am-6pmTuesday 8am-8pm

Wednesday 8am-6pmThursday 8am-8pm

Friday 8am-4pm

Ample free car parking for our patients

Tavistock House Dental Practice77 Tring Road, Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, HP20 1LE

01296 481615info@tavistockhouse.co.uk

www.tavistockhouse.co.uk

Tavistock House Dental PracticeEstablished 40 years

tavistock_ad_210_fullpage.indd 1 02/09/2013 14:18:54

9The Club was founded in 1906 as a nine-hole course, designed by

Willie Park Jnr, twice a winner of the Open Championship.

The clubs first President was Sidney Carr Hobart-Hampden-

Mercer-Henderson, the 7th Earl of Buckinghamshire, pictured in the

car above.

In 1930, 52 acres of land were purchased on the north side of the

Wendover to Princes Risborough road enabling a further nine holes

to be added. These were opened in 1933 to the design of James

Braid, five-times Open winner and at that time the Professional at

Walton Heath Golf Club.

The 18-hole course, located on the Chiltern Escarpment, is

dominated by Coombe Hill on which stands the monument erected

after the Boer War to honour the Oxfordshire & Buckinghamshire

Light Infantry. Former US President Bill Clinton, a keen golfer, also visited us during his time in office. In earlier days both Clement Atlee and Harold Wilson regularly played the course and both became members after their Premiership ended.

Many PGA professionals have played at Ellesborough but Open Championship winners Harry Vardon, Ted Ray, Henry Cotton, Max Faulkner and Greg Norman are the most notable.

History and Tradition

History and Tradition

10

The Course

Situated on the edge of the Chiltern escarpment, the course is

noted for its stunning views across the Vale of Aylesbury and the

surrounding countryside, gently undulating fairways and excellent

greens. With a par of 71, it measures 6,384 yards for men and

5,447 yards for ladies.

This rural location, away from urban housing and the disturbance

of main roads and railway lines, is just one of the reasons we

believe Ellesborough to be simply the best year-round course for

many miles around.

As a chalk downland course, Ellesborough enjoys excellent

drainage, with good playing conditions throughout the seasons. The

undulation of the land and the variety of holes allow for an interesting

game where each round will bring different challenges.

The greens are a strong feature of the course and have long held a

reputation as some of the finest and most challenging in the area.

Legend has it that all of the lines slope away from the Coombe

Hill monument that stands guard over the course. Whilst that is

a good yardstick, members will know that the subtleties of the

Ellesborough greens will ensure that no putt can be predicted

easily.

If you miss the putting surface in regulation your short game will

be tested to the full as it is quite difficult to get up and down to

save par. This combination of varying holes, undulating fairways

and true-running but subtle greens, provide an ever-changing

experience each time the course is played.

10

11

With three par fours (there are three par-3s and three par-5s,

including the 555-yard 15th) the inward nine makes for exceptional

matchplay golf, and there can be no letting down ones guard,

particularly as two of the hardest holes are not encountered until

the 14th and 15th.

All of the holes have their own unique attributes, but among

the most memorable is the 5th, a tough short hole which is well

protected by bunkers all round. Possessing one of the hardest

greens on course, with a difficult undulating putting surface

containing some very subtle borrows, a player of any standard is

happy to walk off with a three.

The 16th, another short hole, is perhaps not as demanding, but

will leave as big an impression. This par 3 is one of the most

photographed holes on the course, with a dell in the middle over

which the tee-shot must be struck.

To maintain and continue to improve the course, the whole

irrigation system has recently been replaced. This provides

conservative, economical use of water supplies whilst enhancing

the appearance and quality of the course. There is a great desire

to continue to improve the course year on year.

Everyone will have their own favourites. Come pay us a visit and

discover which one is yours. Rest assured, the breathtaking

scenery and tradition of Ellesborough will ensure a pleasurable

experience, whatever score is marked on the card at the end of

the round.

11

Store locationsWendover Chinnor Thame www.ivancammack.com Optometrist

adidas_golf_ad_a4_R.Cammack.indd 1 30/07/2013 18:21

Chinnor 01844 351564 Thame 01844 212048 Wendover 01296 625892

www.ivancammack.com

Dont take chances...
