    Workingtogether,Dr.BoyleandDr.Smithinventedthefirstimagingtechnologyusingadigitalsensor,a

    chargedcoupleddevice(CCD).CCDtechnologyhasrevolutionizedphotographysothatlightcouldbe

    capturedelectronically(intheformofpixels)insteadofonfilm. TheinspirationofWillardBoyleand

    GeorgeSmithtransformedanindustry,saidDr.GordonDay,PresidentofIEEEUSA. Replacingfilm

    withelectronicdevicesmadephotographyfasterandcheaper,anddigitalimaginghasledtogreat

    advancesintheprocessinganddistributionofimages.
