    Two years ago while

    vacationing in Sweden,

    I was driving with

    my good friend Jordi

    through the Dalarna

    countryside. Chugging

    along in his trusty

    Volvo wagon, we

explored some terrain unfamiliar to me. The day

before we had walked the forest near his house

picking mushrooms coming back with full baskets

of mostly chanterelles and Karl Johans. This day,

we wended our way through backroads north of

Rttvik, pausing in Boda and the beautiful church

at Ore, and then Jordi realized that we were close

to Styggforsen, a nature preserve with a dramatic

waterfall which was the location for one of Ingmar

Bergmans greatest lms, The Virgin Spring.

We stopped here, of course, and hiked through

the preserve, soaking in its beauty, inspired by the

trees, the falling, rushing water and the sunlight

ltering through the dense trees. Its a mystical

place, and one can readily see its value to Bergman

as a lm locale. Many associate Bergmans lms

only with the Gotland landscape, but he spent

many childhood summers in Dalarna and as an

adult would return to Dalarna to ee the

pressures of life in order to write and renew

    his creative spirit.

Every visit to Sweden that Ive ever taken,

irrespective of the season, has always included

moments like these: excursions into the natural

landscape when I more fully understand why my

Swedish friends so highly value their time outdoors

whether to relax and renew oneself, or to seek

creative inspiration or to harvest natures bounty.

These experiences also accentuate the importance

of nature to our creative expression. The physical

landscape we rely on for our survival also shapeshow we view and interpret the world around

us. Art (in its broadest sense, including paintings,

lm, music, design) created from or inuenced

    American Swedish Institute

by natures inspiration has an impact on our

    personal identity and cultural heritage.

Our theme this year is rooted in t he

relationship of nature and culture and at the

center of our programming is the remarkable

art of Lars Lerin, who starts each day with a

meditative walk through nature. His paintings

draw deeply from the natural and built-up

landscapes he nds in Sweden and other parts

of the world. He is a master of watercolor, and

through these works he shows us something

new about the world or inspires us to think

    differently about it.

Lars Lerin is well-known in Sweden, not only

as a painter but as a writer and through his

public appearances. In 2014, his book Naturlra

(The Lesson of Nature)won one of Swedensmost important non-ction literary awards,

the August Prize. His newest book,Axels tid,

is a memoir of his mentor, Axel Florin, and is

accompanied by music composed by former

    ABBA-member Benny Andersson.

The spring 2016 season at the American

Swedish Institute is lled with many incredible

opportunities to take in great art, to learn, and

to be inspired by the natural world around

us. We appreciate our friends at the Nordic

Watercolour Museum in Skrhamn for their

partnership in this effort, and to our members

and donors whose gits make this possible.

Im grateful, as well, to my colleagues and our

volunteers for their work in serving our visitors

and community so well. I hope to see you

frequently at ASI during t he coming months!

Or perhaps well bump into each other (not

literally) on one of this regions stellar bike paths

    or nature trails. Vlkomna!

    A Troll Family Adventure

    Through Summer 2016

As tall as trees and as ancient and rugged as

the Nordic landscape from which they come,

trolls are some of lore's most fascinating and

varied creatures. Some live under bridges,

others deep inside caves. They can carry their

heads under their arms or hide their hearts

inside wells. They can walk across oceans and

fly over mountains. Trees and shrubs may

grow from their heads, and their noses can be

long enough to stir soup. There are troll hags,

troll daughters, and elderly, shrunken trolls.

Old or young, they are quarrelsome, ugly, and

boastful, and they love to trick princesses and

children. To defeat them, children must rely

on the strengths of their humanity, persistence, kindness, pluck, and willingness to heed

    good advice.

    The Swedish Welfare Social

    Housing Dilemma

    Wednesday, March 23 6:30 7:30 p.m.

With the emergence of the Peoples Home

(folkhemmet) and the welfare state, Swedes

all had the right to good living conditions.

Old apartment buildings in the city with small,

dark rooms and shared toilets in the hallway

or the courtyard were replaced with modern

housing with new facilities. This idea has

recently changed drastically. Who can afford

or even obtain housing in the larger cities?

With growth of the population in larger cities,

the housing situation is in crisis. The idea of

everyones right to affordable housing is still

present, but reality shows another picture.

    Nordic Table Workshop:

    Semlor Cooking Class

    Saturday, April 16 2 4:30 p.m.

Semlorin Sweden used to be reserved for

Shrove Tuesday, the day before Lent begins, as

a nal feast before fasting. Swedes loved their

cardamom buns served with almond paste and

cream so much that when Protestant Reform

freed them from Lenten dietary restrictions,

semlor became common fare for the entire

Easter season. The rich pastry has even been

responsible for at least one death when in 1771

King Adolf Fredrick consumed fourteen buns

after a rich meal. What a way to go.

Now, hungry Swedes begin reaching for the

pastry as soon as Christmas is over. Last year

    an enterprising Swedish baker reinvented

semlorwith a street version of the buns:

semlorwraps. The wraps were a hit and have us

rethinking the Legend of the Semla.

Well learn about how the treats vary across

Scandinavia and Finland, and well create a

fkahonoring King Adolf Fredriks nal meal,

without the death by cardamom buns. Menu to

include:gravlaxand egg salad with roe, spring

greens with quick pickled vegetables, roasted

baby potatoes, and semlor. Additional recipes

    making several

    beautiful and

    useful objects,

    including hooks,

    candlesticks and

    bowls. Ideas

    for further

    exploration will

    be shared.

Instructor: Faith Clover retired from the

University of Minnesota where she taught

art education and introduced her students

to Swedish handcrafts. While leading a study

abroad trip to Sweden and Sterglntan, she

took classes in this relatively unknown craft and

hopes to interest a new group of crafters to

    luffarsljd.

$15 materials fee is payable to the instructor.
