Maidenhead Golf Club

WelCoMeEstablished in 1896, Maidenhead Golf Club is a mature course set in lovely rolling parkland where you can glimpse deer in the early morning and enjoy the peace and tranquillity of a round of golf in this picturesque part of Berkshire. The course, measuring 6,338 yards off the championship tees, is a hidden gem in the heart of Maidenhead with watered fairways and excellent greens. While the layout provides an easy walk, it is a good test of golf requiring both course management and skill to complete successfully. Our off-course facilities are equally agreeable and our comfortable and spacious clubhouse makes the perfect venue for a special occasion such as a wedding reception, anniversary or birthday party or business meeting. The catering is exceptional, our staff attentive and friendly and our accommodating approach allows you to enjoy the function you really want. The club’s proximity to the town provides very easy access from the station, which is no more than a five-minute walk away, or by road, with the A4, M4 and M40 all passing nearby.Despite this, once you are on the course, you could be in the middle of rural England. We have an active membership and welcome both visitors and societies - come along and see for yourself.

Maidenhead Golf Club

historyMaidenhead Golf Club was formed in 1896, with several senior Brigade of Guards officers and several naval officers including the son of the Earl of Orkney being among its founder members. Two Maidonians were also among the torch-bearers for golf in the town, Mr T J Wootton and Dr G E Moore. It was the latter’s friendship with Mr W H Grenfell which really got the project off the ground. Mr Grenfell, you see, was the Mayor of Maidenhead in 1895 and 1896 and an extremely wealthy and competent businessman who owned more than 10,000 acres of land around the town.So it was that Mr Grenfell offered to lease some of his acreage near to Maidenhead Railway Station, which was to become our home and remains so well into a second century. Mr Grenfell was one of the earliest 63 members of the club, became its first president and agreed to present “a challenge cup for competition”. This was the fine Grenfell Cup which is still in yearly competition.W H Grenfell, later to become Lord Desborough, was quite a character and an international athlete in cricket, running, rowing, punting, swimming, fencing, tennis and wrestling! No other golf club had a president who had so many and various achievements. For example, he ran a mile in 4 minutes 37 seconds, rowed for Oxford against Cambridge in the famous dead-heat race of 1877 and stroked a rowing eight across the Channel. To add that he swam across the Niagara River below the Falls and then repeated the feat a second time when someone doubted it, shows he was a man who “did” things.

Maidenhead Golf Club

history Continued

The course was opened for play on December 12, 1896, with the club also hosting a champagne luncheon on the same day to mark the occasion in its fine new clubhouse.A separate nine-hole course for ladies only was built in 1897 on the left side of the current first hole, but the ladies did not like it and the area was closed in 1907, losing a valuable acreage from the total available to the club in later leases. The club found itself in difficulty in the early years in particular because of the terms of the lease, which stated that the lessor had the power “to take portions of the land that he may require for building…making railways or any other purpose of the kind.”Land was taken from parts of the 17th and 18th holes in the early part of the 20th century and the whole of the original 14th green and 15th tee was forfeit after members showed little enthusiasm when the opportunity to purchase the land arose in late 1952 and instead negotiated a new longer lease with the Maidenhead Corporation, which did, at least, secure the long-term future of the club. The first professional at our club was Alex Simpson, a Scot from Forfar who was extremely skilled in the making of golf clubs. Club minutes record that he was also able to play golf on our newly-created course against the well-known professionals J H Taylor and James Braid and Pearson in a golf match on 19 March, 1898.

Taylor, also a renowned golf course architect, advised on additional bunkering and with subsequent traps also being added, there were complete ranges of bunkers usually about six feet high above the surface of the fairway on some holes in the 1920s.Deciding that this was removing some of the enjoyment from their game, members then set up a debunkering committee to remove some of the hazards, no doubt encouraged by two wealthier members who used small biplane aircraft to land on the 8th and take off up the 9th hole when they came to play golf!Noteworthy in our club’s early history is the election as a Privileged Member of the Consul General of Japan in 1923. This began the pleasing and helpful visiting association of members of the Nippon Club over many years. Our recent history has been focused on improving the course and its facilities for members. An automatic watering system was updated in 1992 and in November 1994 a borehole dug which can be used for the future irrigation of greens and tees in times of drought. Full fairway irrigation has been in place since 2005.The existing clubhouse was showing signs of its age, so this was demolished and a new much-improved building with greatly improved facilities erected to mark our centenary year in 1996.

the CourseThe beautiful tree-lined golf course at Maidenhead offers an appealing test to golfers of all abilities. At 6,338 yards from the white championship tees, it is perhaps not long by today’s standards, but the fact that the course record stands at just five under the par of 70 would suggest that it has stood the test of time remarkably well.Technology may have altered golf equipment drastically, but there is little point in being able to boom a drive 350 yards if you cannot hit it straight as well. Maidenhead penalises the errant shot while those able to hit with accuracy are richly rewarded. The greens are slightly smaller than is the norm, placing a premium on accuracy with the approach shot or, should you miss the putting surface in regulation, a sharp short game comes in very handy. It is how our course designer intended it when he drew up the course more than a hundred years ago.We are always looking at ways to enhance yet further the golfing experience and improvement work is undertaken each winter.A particular focus most recently has been on lowering and reshaping the fourth green to increase the number of pin positions available on this two-tier sloping surface, while work has also gone on to rebuild some greenside bunkers and refurbish some of the fairway sand traps.

take the Course tourPrepare for your visit to Maidenhead Golf Club by familiarising yourself with each hole over the coming pages and make the most of your round with our hole-by-hole guide. You can prepare yourself for the challenges that await, as well as pick up some invaluable playing tips from our club professional, Steve Geary.

13

Hole 1, 358 yards, par 4The first is a good opening hole. It is a gentle 358-yard par 4. A drive down the middle will give you a good shot to the green which is slightly elevated to the rear.Hole 2, 351 yards, par 4The second can be testing. Find a good landing spot for your drive and you have a clear shot to the green but beware - too far right off the tee will block you out and the cross bunker awaits your second shot. The green is upward sloping and tiered to the rear.Hole 3, 376 yards, par 4This is a hole of modest length; however, the bunker on the left is strategically placed and awaits your drive. Your shot to the green has to be spot on, otherwise disaster might await.

Hole 4, 474 yards, par 5At 474 yards this was, in earlier years, the maximum length for a par 4 (par 5 for ladies). Avoiding the bunker on the right is always a good start to this hole. The fairway, as you approach the hole, slopes gently left to right. With your second shot you must avoid the fairway bunker on the left. The two-tiered green can be very tricky, especially if the flag is on the top tier. You really should congratulate yourself if you leave this hole with a par.Hole 5, 324 yards, par 4At stroke index 17 this could be a birdie chance for players of even moderate ability. Keep your drive left of centre to give you the best opportunity to get into this two-tiered green. For the longer hitter use of the driver could spell trouble.

take the Course tour Continued

Hole 6, 195 yards, par 3This par 3 of 195 yards will reward a good shot to the green with another birdie chance. However, miss the green and getting par could be difficult.Hole 7, 371 yards, par 4At stroke index 5 the seventh is a good test for all club golfers. A well-positioned drive to the fairway that falls from right to left will give you a good shot to the well-protected green. The long hitter needs to watch out for the bunker on the left.Hole 8, 429 yards, par 4A hole you will either love or hate. Your drive needs to be down the right-hand side while missing the fairway bunker. A drive down the left, if you escape the large tree, will leave you an interesting shot across a large dip to the green. Your second shot should be just to the left of the mound by the green and your ball will then roll down the slope towards the hole.

Hole 9, 513 yards, par 5The ninth, at 513 yards, is the longer of the two par fives on the course. With a good drive and second shot you could be rewarded with a birdie. However, the trees all the way up the right might put an end to that.Hole 10, 151 yards, par 3This par three has a well protected green - be long and straight enough to avoid the hazards. There are five bunkers awaiting the wayward shot. Hole 11, 465 yards, par 4A demanding hole of 465 yards and at stroke index 2 you should be well pleased with a par. There is plenty of room to play down the left thus avoiding the fairway bunkers that await your drive. The good-sized green slopes away from you (par 5 for ladies).Hole 12, 303 yards, par 4At stroke index 18 this hole offers a birdie opportunity but beware the bunkers that protect this long green. You drive to the right at your peril and it’s out of bounds up the left.

14

Page 15: Maidenhead Golf Club Official Brochure

Maidenhead Golf Club

Hole 13, 145 yards, par 3A deceptive 145-yard par 3 which is all carry. Visitors very often under club and finish in the pit before the green or in one of the four surrounding bunkers. This hole is played over a gully to a well-guarded green. Getting par is a good reward for a straight shot from the tee. Hole 14, 398 yards, par 4At 398 yards this can be the most daunting hole on the course. The drive has to be well struck to be in position at the partial dogleg to enable a good second shot into the green. Feel pleased with a par but beware the hazards. Hole 15, 396 yards, par 4This 396-yard hole gives the long hitter an opportunity for a well-drilled drive leaving a mid-iron shot to the green which is well protected by two forward greenside bunkers.

Hole 16, 182 yards, par 3At 182 yards this is a longish par 3 with a raised green and a deep greenside bunker on the right. A full shot to the green could reward you with a birdie.Hole 17, 483 yards, par 5This second par 5 of the round has two bunkers and a copse all reachable from the tee. Clear these and the cross bunker should not trouble your second shot. Avoid the tendency to come up short of the two greenside bunkers.Hole 18, 424 yards, par 4At this final hole of 424 yards you will need a good drive to the middle of the fairway to give you a full shot to the green. This is well protected by two forward bunkers. Beware of overshooting the green – the car park and clubhouse await.

tuitionGolf coaching is available from Head Professional Steve Geary and his team seven days a week. All areas of the game can be worked on, from driving to putting and from iron play to perfecting your bunker technique. One promotion we have been running which has proved particularly popular is The Golf Course, a package incorporating three 45-minute coaching sessions on the practice ground and a nine-hole playing lesson. The structure for the coaching sessions will be determined by the ability of the player but as a guide will be one session on the golf swing followed by two sessions on the short game. For those looking to take up the game, consider joining the newly-created Maidenhead Golf Academy. This allows access to the course after 5pm in summer and noon in winter as well as the opportunity to enjoy 18 one-hour clinics, two per month in the summer and one per month in the winter. Class size is small (only eight per clinic), ensuring you receive your teaching professional’s full attention. The Academy offers the chance not only to learn the game, but for the novice to familiarise themselves with the golf club environment, thereby making the subsequent step of becoming a full member a far less daunting one.

THERAPY AND MASSAGEStretch and Strengthen.Regular Massage is part and parcel of the life of all top athletes. Yet the simple truth is that everyone who makes sport and exercise a regular part of life needs it.Massage provides you with the necessary passive stretching and general ‘mulching’ of your muscles to ensure optimum efficiency. This is not only to reduce injury but to speed up recovery.

Repair and Renew.Muscles strengthen and improve as a result of exercise. This is because our muscles rebuild themselves after the strain (and micro injury) of exercise.Massage helps your body do this better by clearing out the lactic acid and speeding up this process of repair and renewal.Just as training on a regular basis will help your muscles, this is also true about Massage.

praCtiCe faCilitiesFew people would suggest that golf is an easy game to master. Seeing even the best golfers in the world struggle for consistency at times is evidence enough that the casual player must work hard to reach new levels. But it is this continual and never-ending quest for improvement that attracts so many people to the sport.Maidenhead can put you in a position to become as good a player as you wish to be. We have an excellent teaching professional who offers easy-to-follow advice that is proven to work and some fine practice facilities to enable the pupil to work on those newly-learnt techniques so they become second nature and assimilated into his or her game. There is a practice ground in the middle of the course which is 155 yards long where shots can be played to a proper green as good as those on the course proper. There are flags for targeted practice, a bunker and different areas of rough to work on lob shots and other speciality shots.Another practice ground can be found away from the course which at 280 yards long and around 200 yards wide is perfect for working on the long game.A very nice practice putting green in front of the clubhouse and three practice nets complete our game improvement facilities.

playinG CateGoriesMenAnyone joining the men’s section at Maidenhead can look forward to a great deal of competitive golf, both against other clubs and alongside fellow members in club events. At the highest level, the club enters a team in the Berkshire Scratch League. You do not, however, have to be able to shoot par on a consistent basis to represent Maidenhead against other clubs and the men’s team plays friendlies – generally featuring a dozen golfers a side – against other local clubs such as Reading, Temple and Burnham Beeches.Within the club, the major competition is the Peace Cup which is in effect the club championship and dates back to 1922. Two honours board competitions can be traced all the way back to the late 19th century and there are nearly 20 trophies played for on an annual basis.Monthly medals – strokeplay in the summer and stableford in the winter – take place at weekends and throughout the year during the week there is a stableford and a strokeplay medal every month on a Friday.Captain’s Charity Week sees a lot of novel events to strike the right mood, with competitions such as cross country golf and Texas scrambles. Funds raised in 2012 go to the Rainbow Trust, which provides emotional and practical support to families who have a child with a life-threatening or terminal illness.

One of the challenges that generates much interest is the Border Trophy, an annual 16-a-side match between Maidenhead members who represent the country of their birth in an England v Scotland match.No-one wants to be on the losing side in this one, but a very convivial evening follows in the clubhouse.A much more refined competition is the Chrysanthemum Cup, which is an enjoyable annual fixture that has been played against our Japanese friends the Nippon Club since 1967.LadiesThe Ladies enjoy friendlies against 22 other clubs throughout the year. They play home and away in alternate years, mostly against clubs from within Berkshire and with some long-standing fixtures among them.Generally these are played on Tuesday mornings, but there is some play at weekends as well. Teams comprise four silver and four bronze players and the chosen format is four-ball betterball. These encounters live up to their name of friendlies, with normally a cup of coffee beforehand and sandwiches and scones and tea afterwards. The Ladies enter many of the county’s competitions such as the Reading and District Silver and Bronze Leagues, which features matches throughout the autumn with the leading clubs progressing to the semi-finals, as well as the Fourball League also played in the autumn.

28

Page 29: Maidenhead Golf Club Official Brochure

Other county events supported are the division spring and autumn meetings, both one-day stableford events, Fourball League, Angela Uzielli Memorial Trophy, Duncan Trophy, a knockout competition played by five golfers per side and the Inter-Club Shield, a one-day Stableford event held in May for teams of three.Nationally-recognised competitions such as the Mail on Sunday and the Daily Mail Foursomes are always keenly supported. There are well in excess of a dozen club competitions, as well as monthly medals and stablefords and knockout competitions in the summer for singles and pairs. One of the most sought-after trophies is the Challenge Cup, which is played for over 36 holes on a single day in September by the 16 best players from three specific qualifying medal competitions.Although the Ladies love their golf, they are a very sociable group too and enjoy many social events together. There is even social golf in the summer evenings on a Thursday from 5pm. The mixed groupings are drawn and new ladies are made to feel most welcome.Much fundraising is done throughout the year in support of the Lady Captain’s chosen charity, with 2012 seeing SportsAble (formerly WAMDSAD or Windsor Ascot Maidenhead District Sports Association) for the Disabled and Mencap Monday Club being supported.

SeniorsAlthough the qualifying age to be a member of the Seniors at Maidenhead is regarded as 60, people in their late 50s are not turned away and no criteria is laid down in matches between ourselves and our neighbours as these are always friendly and good-spirited affairs where good golf and good company is all that matters. The Seniors enjoy fixtures against 12 other local clubs home and away each season, running from the beginning of April right through to the end of September. The matches are played in the morning, usually on a Wednesday or Friday if at home. Most often these fixtures feature six pairs a side playing fourball betterball, though occasionally as many as eight pairs a side can be involved. A convivial meal generally follows.A book is left in the clubhouse detailing all the senior competitions across the county which members may wish to enter and it is left to individuals to take part if they so desire.Within the club itself, there is a Seniors Championship limited to people who have represented the Seniors section in matches during the year. It is an 18-hole medal played in October.

30

Maidenhead Golf Club

The club runs other competitions which Seniors take part in such as monthly medals or stablefords, while the seniors enjoy informal fourball roll-ups on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8am. Enjoyment is always a key element and several more light-hearted competitions are enjoyed such as Texas scrambles and a Christmas stableford. Around twice a year some members of the group enjoy a day out at another club, playing a round of golf and then enjoying a meal together. There are matches with the ladies and each year members of the seniors and over-19s are drawn together as a two-ball in competition for the Jack Cloynes Trophy. The Over 19sThis section was originally known as the “Bunny” Section before changing its name in the late 1970s.The Over 19s have their own captain and are informally affiliated to seven other clubs in Berkshire: Henley, Sonning, Goring & Streatley, Calcot Park, Reading (Emmer Green), East Berks and Newbury & Crookham which sees very friendly home and away fixtures. The matches are followed by a good social time in the clubhouse. All the clubs take it in turns to host an annual event called the Inter-Club competition which proves to be one of the high points of the year. Some 48 players compete in a one-day event for individual and club honours, with Maidenhead playing host in 2012.

While technically one must have a handicap of more than 18.5 to be a member of the over-19s, there is also a C team for those who get too proficient at the game and their handicap falls below this mark. This offers a couple of fixtures against the likes of Winter Hill and Flackwell Heath. An evening meal follows the friendly matches, with wine on the table and players from both sides in jacket and tie enjoying some excellent catering and rekindling friendships that in some cases stretch back many years. The Over 19s may still play golf to win, but nevertheless they are a very friendly group and anyone joining as a new member will very quickly get to know a host of new friends.Roll-ups are held on Monday, Wednesday and Friday at a more sociable time of day, starting around 10am.There is one club competition, the Bunny Trophy, which is a knockout held throughout the year.

visitorsWe would be delighted for you to come and experience the thrill offered by playing on our manicured fairways and true-running greens as you walk round our picturesque parkland layout at Maidenhead that has been enjoyed by countless thousands since it first opened in 1896. Visitors are welcome to play our historic course at times when it is not being used by our members.Even better value is offered with the purchase of a day ticket allowing unlimited golf subject to course availability and with special twilight rates often available to those able to play at less busy times later in the day.It is preferred that visitors possess a current handicap and can produce a handicap certificate upon registration at the Professional’s Shop. If a handicap certificate cannot be presented, the club reserve the right to ask any player or players to leave the course if their lack of ability is likely to be to the detriment of others on the course or they do not adhere to the etiquette as detailed in the Rules of Golf or to the club’s rules and dress code.We are a welcoming club, but also like to maintain certain standards. As with most golf clubs, our dress code is smart casual, so no jeans, football or rugby shirts, t-shirts or trainers. Shorts must be tailored (no Bermudas, running shorts, etc) and be tucked in and accompanied by either short white socks or any colour knee-length socks. To check on tee-time availability and to book your round, call 01628 624693.

Why cut corners on your most expensive purchase?

Buying a property without carrying out a full structural survey is like buying an expensive second hand car without any service history.

We can: identify subsidence, woodworm and dry rot, damp and condensation; check the integrity of chimneys and roof structures; look over services such as gas, water, electricity etc. We will also identify alterations or extensions and provide advice on their compliance with latest legislations.

Just because the structure is new or has been standing for many years, doesn’t mean it always will!
