For 100 years, Temple Golf Club has provided both members and visitors with a world of character, inspiration and unparalleled natural beauty.

The chalk downland course was designed by the 1887 and 1889 Open Champion Willie Park Junior and to this day the spirit of his original course layout is maintained and remains very challenging.

Temple is a highly-rated all-year-round golfing venue enjoying magnificent panoramic views over the River Thames and Chiltern Hills. The backdrop to the 1st tee is simply breathtaking.

Predominantly built on chalk, the course drains very well and is renowned for being perfectly playable in all but the very worst of weather conditions with winter greens and tees rarely used.

Conveniently located about 20 minutes from Heathrow in a triangle formed by Henley-on-Thames, Marlow and Maidenhead, Temple is within just a few miles of both the M4 and M40 motorways so the Club is easily reached from many parts of the country.

A very friendly club with an attractive traditional Clubhouse, which sits high up overlooking the course, and provides a wonderful setting for a quiet drink, a snack or a meal.

Welcome

The Club was formed in 1909 by Captain G Macdonald of The Guards Club in Maidenhead along with a number of other officers and local gentry. Land was leased from the estates of Bisham Abbey and Temple Park and Willie Park Junior was commissioned to design and build the course which was “quietly” opened for play in May 1910. In 1912 Louis Oppenheimer was invited to join the Board of Directors so starting the long and continuing association between the Oppenheimer Family and Temple Golf Club.

Raymond Oppenheimer joined Temple as a junior towards the end of the Great War. By the age of 16 his handicap was down to scratch and he went on to become one of England’s foremost amateur golfers, captaining his country during the period 1947 - 1951. Raymond Oppenheimer’s single biggest golfing achievement was being appointed Captain of the GB & Ireland Walker Cup team in 1951. He was one of those responsible for launching the Golf Foundation in 1952, a body that has done so much to promote golf amongst the young ever since.

Club HistoryThrough Raymond Oppenheimer’s involvement in the great game, many of Britain’s finest amateur golfers regularly frequented Temple during the late forties, fifties and sixties. Often a Raymond Oppenheimer Select Team would be formed to play the Walker Cup team of the day in practice weekends held at Temple. During his lifetime, Raymond Oppenheimer was friends with many of the game’s greatest players including Molly Gourlay, Bobby Jones, Bobby Locke, Sam Snead, Peter Thompson and Roger & Joyce Wethered and consequently many of these played regularly at Temple. Indeed, Molly Gourlay won the Temple Ladies Open in 1922 and went on to represent Great Britain in many international matches including the first Curtis Cup match at Wentworth in 1932.

Mr Raymond, as he was affectionately known, also took a close interest in the career of Henry Cotton who was appointed as the Club Professional at Temple in 1959 having been attached to Temple as a playing professional since 1954. Raymond Oppenheimer was elected President of Temple in 1956 and served in that capacity until his death in 1984. Raymond’s nephew Nicky is the

current President and takes a keen interest in the Club’s affairs. From the very beginning, well known faces have been seen at Temple including actors Sir Laurence Olivier, Spencer Tracey, James Stewart, James Mason, aviators Amy Johnson and Guy Gibson, Prince Bernhard and Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands and so the list goes on.

Temple also has a long tradition of hosting celebrity golf events in aid of charity. As early as 1952, a challenge match was held between Bing Crosby and Bob Hope representing America and Ted Ray and Donald Peers representing Great Britain. This special match attracted huge crowds as did an exhibition round played by Greg Norman in the 1980s. More recently, some of Britain’s best-loved stars of sport and entertainment have turned out on a number of occasions to play in the Temple Celebrity Amateur Golf Tournament.

Henry Cotton was appointed as the Club Professional at Temple by his good friend Raymond Oppenheimer in 1959 and remained attached to the Club until the early seventies. During his early years at Temple, Henry and his wife Toots lived in a flat above the Clubhouse.

There was a style and substance about Sir Henry Cotton that made him not only unique, but a British national hero. He was much more than just a three-time British Open champion. He also championed the cause of British golf professionals seeking a higher ground in their country’s society and became a patriarch of the European Golf Tour. Described as witty, handsome, intelligent, urbane and a non-conformist, Cotton authored 10 books, designed golf courses and was the most respected and prolific British instructor of his era. His philosophy was simple: “To be a champion, you must act like one.”

Cotton was born in January 1907 at Holmes Chapel in Cheshire, England. He left private school at age 16 after a dispute with his cricket coach and set out to learn the trade of golf on his own terms. This meant dressing smartly, although shunning the traditional jacket and tie, and behaving properly, but never subserviently. Encouraged by Harry Vardon, James Braid and J.H. Taylor, Cotton took his first Head Professional’s job three years later, but soon moved to the Waterloo Club in Brussels, where he was treated as an equal.

Cotton started his career as a professional golfer at the age of 17, and was known for working extremely hard at his game, often practising until his hands bled. Cotton placed great emphasis upon accuracy and differed from modern golf teachers in the great emphasis he placed upon the role of the hands in the golf swing. Although emphasis was given to a correct grip, he also emphasized the need to build up the strength of the hands and forearms. The competition golfer, equipped with such assets could counter an off-centre strike off the face of the club and still achieve a powerful, yet accurate shot. He also stated the need to “educate the hands” in that the competitive golfer had to achieve an awareness of the position of the hands during the golf swing itself, something modern teachers have not stressed greatly, preferring a more passive role for the hands.

Henry Cotton achieved real fame during the 1930s and 1940s, with three victories in The Open Championship (1934, 1937, and 1948). His record round of 65, made during the 1934 Open Championship, led to Dunlop creating the famous ‘Dunlop 65’ ball.

During World War II Cotton served with the Royal Air Force, and raised money for the Red Cross by playing exhibition matches and shows which earned him an MBE. Cotton was a player in three British Ryder Cup teams, and served as Team Captain in 1947 and 1953.

Following his retirement from competitive golf, Cotton became a successful golf course architect and designed the Championship course at his beloved Penina on the Portuguese Algarve. The course is now known as the Sir Henry Cotton course. Along with his good friend Raymond Oppenheimer, helped to establish the Golf Foundation, which helped thousands of young boys and girls get started in golf.

Cotton loved the high life, including champagne, caviar and bespoke tailored clothes. He lived for a while in a suite in a 5-star hotel, and later bought an estate complete with a butler and full staff, travelling everywhere in a Rolls-Royce.

Cotton was knighted in the New Year’s Day Honours of 1988. In some quarters of the media this was reported as a “posthumous knighthood” because he had died by the time it was publicly announced. However, Henry Cotton had accepted the knighthood before his death.

Temple Golf Club is located on a 160-acre site in a picturesque area of the Thames Valley. “Temple Links,” as it was originally described, was designed by Open Champion Willie Park Jnr with the help of James Hepburn. The course was “quietly” opened for play on 4 May 1910 as an eighteen hole course measuring some 5,690 yards. In the intervening years modifications, improvements and extensions have produced a course with subtle and testing qualities, currently measuring 6,210 yards.

Overlooking the Chilterns from Speen Hill and set on chalk downland, Temple provides the golfer with a course renowned for its all year round playing surfaces. Fine natural turf, undulating fairways, old established woodlands, undisturbed meadows and breath-taking views all contribute to a golf course of outstanding quality.

There are thirty species of tree at Temple, lending it a peaceful, old-world dignity and cowslips and purple orchids abound in the meadow rough. The golf course is managed in sympathy with the environmental surroundings where golfers and wildlife, flora and fauna live in harmony. Come and play this wonderful golf course and, at the same time, enjoy a walk in the beautiful English countryside.

About the Course

Page 13: Temple Golf Club Official Brochure 2014-2015

www.templegolfclub.co.uk | 13

Standing on the 1st tee, the Thames Valley spreads out before you and with Bisham, Marlow and the River Thames shimmering in the distance, you know there is something special about this course, something which appeals to those who embrace the “Joie de Vivre” factor on the golf course.

The 1st hole, a spectacular par 4 drop hole, leads you to an undulating course with beautiful views throughout the round. The 8th is another stunning hole, this time a Par 3 which takes you down to the lowest point of the course. From there you start to gently wind your way back up to the Clubhouse.

This 6,210-yard, par-70 course remains true to its original design and has many special holes, which provide challenges to golfers of all abilities. The 10th, for example, is a long par 3 with a hidden green sunk into a bowl and is listed amongst “The Top 100 Most Unusual Golf Holes” in the United Kingdom.

Whatever the season, the course always has something very special to offer. Spring has its many shades of green as the leaves burst into life. Summer brings a stunning myriad of colour with the wild flowers including several rare species of wild orchids in full bloom. Autumn is utterly spectacular with the varying russet shades of the countless specimen trees on the course, creating a simply stunning backdrop and due to the fact that it is built on chalk, the course is an excellent winter golfing venue.

The following course tour provides an insight into how best to play and navigate the course.

1st Hole - 381 yards - Par 4This drop hole is undoubtedly one of the most spectacular opening holes in the Southern Counties with panoramic views over Marlow, the Thames Valley and the Chilterns beyond.

2nd Hole - 425 yards - Par 4A long and very testing par 4, well worthy of its low stroke index. Many golfers treat this as a par 5, which it is for ladies, and are happy to walk off with a 5 on their card.

Take the Course Tour3rd Hole - 364 yards - Par 4Probably one of the most difficult second shots on the golf course but one, that if executed well, should yield a birdie opportunity. The well-contoured green has a very narrow entrance and is protected by greenside bunkers left and right.

4th Hole - 509 yards - Par 5A straightforward par 5 but fairway bunkers and strategically placed copses will catch wayward shots.

5th Hole - 144 yards - Par 3Take care not to be fooled by this relatively short par 3 which requires a particularly deft tee shot to find and hold the raised putting surface. As the green itself is raised, a ball landing short of the green is very unlikely to run up onto the putting surface which is heavily guarded by bunkers, and slopes down from front to back.

6th Hole - 390 yards - Par 4When viewed from the white tee, copses on either side of the fairway combined with rough on the right-hand side of the hole give the impression of a fairly narrow landing area. However, from the yellow and red tees the fairway seems much more inviting and once found, most golfers will be left with a mid to short iron approach to a heavily contoured green which slopes down from front to back and right to left.

7th Hole - 346 yards - Par 4A slight right-to-left dog-leg hole although the camber of the fairway is in the opposite direction which makes for a challenging tee shot. It is difficult to avoid a sloping lie for your second shot but you will have rewarding views over the Thames Valley from Hurley to Harleyford. Two putts from anywhere on this green represent a good result.

Take the Course Tour Continued

8th Hole - 230 yards - Par 3As you approach the tee for this longish, downhill and picturesque par 3, you will have a wonderful view over rolling wooded hills, a vista that has hardly changed during the 100 plus years of the Club’s existence.

9th Hole - 513 yards - Par 5 (4)A testing par 5 from the white and red tees. From the yellow tees the hole is played as a very tough par 4, the longest on the course at 434 yards. This is a great golf hole that should be played with the head rather than the heart. Although longer hitters can get up in two, the reward is seldom worth the risk. With dense woodland on both sides of the hole and a fairway which slopes down from right to left along the entire length of the hole, the 9th represents a real test of golf.

Page 18: Temple Golf Club Official Brochure 2014-2015

10th Hole - 243 yards - Par 3A very unusual and fairly tough par 3 in that the green is completely hidden in a deep hollow probably formed by an old chalk well. Beware of the greenside bunker lurking at the bottom of the hollow on the left-hand side of the green and the subtle contours which can make putting a modicum tricky.

11th Hole - 412 yards - Par 4A blind tee shot represents the start point for this long and searching par 4. Do not be too greedy here as out of bounds awaits on the left of the hole whilst there is deep rough on the right. The likely mid iron approach is to an elevated two-tiered green with a very steep bank rising off the back.

12th Hole - 498 yards - Par 5The last of three par 5s on the Men’s card (there are five for Ladies), the 12th is probably the most straightforward of the three and thus represents the

Take the Course Tour Continued

most realistic birdie opportunity. The hole looks inviting from the tee and the fairway is fairly generous. Your approach shot to this green is key and you should aim to leave your ball below the hole as the green slopes down severely from right to left. Two putts, especially from above the hole, is a good return.

13th Hole - 137 yards - Par 3This is a short hole, playing uphill from the tee. Beware the woods close to the back of the green but if you can find the green the putting surface is one of the flatter ones on the course.

14th Hole - 337 yards - Par 4An accurate rather than long tee shot is the key to this hole which doglegs slightly to the right with a two-tiered green that is well guarded by trees and bunkers.

15th Hole - 396 yards - Par 4This interesting par 4 slopes from right to left ending with a long but tricky green surrounded by humps and hollows on its left. As the ground runs from the right to left, an approach shot aimed to the right of the green will normally work well.

16th Hole - 213 yards - Par 3Turning for home this is the third 200-plus-yard par 3 for the men but a fairly straightforward short par 4 for ladies.A narrow well protected entrance leads to a long reverse two-tiered green. Finding the target is one challenge, two putting is another. A par 3 here is definitely an achievement.

17th Hole - 413 yards - Par 4This is a tough driving hole as it doglegs left with a blind tee shot. At average driving length the ground falls sharply from left to right and a tee shot too far to the right will come to rest either in meadow rough or under the overhanging branches of a strategically located beech tree. Even a well placed tee shot leaves an exacting second to an elevated green protected by a bunker and humps, hollows and run-offs to the right with another sizeable bunker to the left. Most club golfers are pleased to walk off this green with a bogey 5 on their scorecard.

18th Hole - 259 yards - Par 4The Clubhouse beckons but first a tempting and potentially rewarding par 4 needs to be negotiated. Remain cautious of the meadow rough to the right of the hole and beware of the two-tiered green, this time not front to back but with a ridge running the length of the putting surface and a step down from left to right. A gentle finishing hole that yields more birdies than any other on the course.

MembershipA relatively small club in terms of membership numbers provides two huge benefits. Firstly there is a relaxed and friendly atmosphere where everybody tends to know everybody else and secondly, access to the golf course is good all year round.

In today’s world of time pressures, increasing business and family commitments and a focus on value for money, Temple offers a flexible range of membership options based on the number of rounds played during the Club year which runs from 1 August to 31 July.

Members of Temple enjoy a full programme of golf throughout the year. There are fixtures against other clubs, together with competition golf to be enjoyed alongside fellow members, some for silverware and some of a more social nature.

There is always something to suit your handicap, age and golfing aspirations at Temple and you will certainly never be short of playing opportunities.

For those who do not necessarily want to play serious competitive golf, there are ‘fun’ competitions held regularly throughout the year e.g. the extremely popular annual cross country in which the course is set up in a completely different way to normal and sees participants approaching greens from all angles.

Members’ GolfMenThe Men’s Section at Temple is very active with frequent competitions all year round.

Members meet up to play in the regular ‘roll ups’, with a Saturday morning roll-up very popular among the working members as well as an early morning “Sunday Hat” roll-up during the winter months.

Temple also competes against other local clubs with members able to represent the Club in the Inter Counties Scratch League, the B, B & O Hillman Trophy, inter club friendly fixtures and, for those with a 19+ handicap, there are six Rabbits’ fixtures a year.

While there is a keen focus on competitive golf, balance is always a good thing and we provide regular social golf where the only thing on offer is renewing friendships and perhaps a drink in the bar afterwards for the winner.

Temple is much more than just a golf club. With excellent facilities and a sociable, friendly group of members, there are plenty of opportunities to enjoy the off-course benefits of being a member at Temple Golf Club.

A varied programme of social events is organised throughout the year although most of the major social occasions take place during the November to March window i.e. out of the main playing season. Our aim is that there should be something to appeal to everyone, whatever their taste in entertainment.

Occasions such as Burns Night afford the opportunity to sample the fare offered by the Club’s excellent catering staff. There is much more besides, including dinner dances, Sunday Lunches and a series of evening supper lectures during the winter months. The annual Temple Quiz is very popular as are cabaret nights and there is a thriving Bridge Section that meets on Monday lunchtimes and on one evening a month outside the main golf season.
