Lyme Regis is a town like no other. Nestled around the mouth of the River Lim (the Buddle, to locals) in the steep embrace of the Undercliff National Nature Reserve to the west and the fossil-rich Blue Lias cliffs to the east, it has kept the charm of almost 1,000 years of lively history, with each generation adding to the romance of its character.

Lyme is a pirate’s treasure chest: whatever your age and whatever the time of year you will find jewels to delight and entertain you. For the very young those might be the sea creatures of millions of years ago, or the extraordinary vitality within a rock pool. Families can relax and enjoy the town’s simple friendliness.

Older visitors can take time to contemplate the beauty of the scenery, the town and The Cobb on the peaceful stillness of a golden autumn day or the fresh anticipation

of spring and the daffodil walk along the riverside. For the active it might be walking, water sports or golf; for the culture seeker it might be the work of our artists, writers or artisans and, for the gourmet, it would be our specialist food shops and wide variety of pubs and restaurants.

For the dog owner we offer a great many dog-friendly pubs and restaurants and dogs are free to run on Monmouth, Church and Back beaches at any time of the year. For those who have to stay in touch with the world beyond, Wi-Fi is available at locations around the town.

Lyme has so much to offer you, and as you leave the world behind you and come down the hill into the town you will be met by the call of the gulls, the tang of the air, the sparkle of the sun on the sea, and the welcome of the townspeople, and your heart will lift with expectation.

Lyme Through the AgesThe first mention of Lyme was in 774, thus the town has enjoyed over 12 centuries of lively history. It received its royal charter from Edward 1 in 1284 and it was confirmed by Elizabeth I in 1591.

For a great many years Lyme Regis was one of the major trading ports of the south coast, rivalling Weymouth, Poole and Dartmouth and with a population of around 4,000, one of the largest towns in the country.

Lyme’s heyday was in the 200 years between 1500 and 1700 when a vast array of goods was brought into, and exported from the town, running the risk of pirates, corsairs and buccaneers all the while. A large market was held in Broad Street for around 600 years but not all the trading was legitimate: the town had its share of smugglers as well, who found a welcome at the Rock Point Inn at the mouth of the river.

The townspeople were involved in civil unrest in the 17th century and gave Lyme a reputation for rebellion. In 1644, during English Civil War, the town sided with Cromwell and withstood an eight-week siege by Royalist forces, an event which is celebrated every June with the Seige of Lyme Day. Just over 40 years later, on 11 June 1685 the Duke of Monmouth (an illegitimate son of Charles II) landed on the west beach and started the Monmouth Rebellion, an attempt to overthrow the Catholic

James II. The rebellion failed and 99 men from Lyme were arrested and came before the infamous Judge Jeffreys at the Bloody Assizes. Twelve of them were hanged at Lyme, on 12 September 1685, on the beach where Monmouth had landed and which now bears his name.

In the mid-1700s Lyme’s fortunes as a trading port declined and the town faced ruin but was saved in the 1750s by the discovery that coastal air and sea bathing was an aid to health. Within years the town had become a fashionable seaside resort and an antidote to the excesses of the Bath season. In the early 1800s Lyme’s fame grew further as the new science of palaeontology found its natural home here and the Lyme that you see today is a direct evolution of these two factors.

The town has seen more settled times recently, but does have a particular 20th century claim to Hollywood

fame in being the home of the original Lassie. On New Year’s Day, 1915 HMS Formidable was sunk by German torpedoes. Some few survivors in the ship’s lifeboat made it through huge seas to land at Lyme in the middle of the night but some of the seamen died on the way. All were taken into the Pilot Boat Inn, the dead being laid out in a makeshift morgue. Lassie, the rough-haired collie owned by the landlady sat licking one of these sailors, realising he was clinging on to life. Abel Seaman John Cowan was the sailor, who owed his life to Lassie’s care.

The Perfect Family Resort

Lyme has always been the perfect place for family holidays. The simple pleasures of building sandcastles and exploring rock pools at low tide are eternal ones, bringing joy to parents and grandparents as well as to children. Adults can cast off the pressures of modern living and escape, watching the magical moment when toddlers get the first feeling of sand between their toes, splash in the sea and watch an anemone unfurl in the clear waters of a pool on Lucy’s Ledge.

Older children can fish for crabs off The Cobb or go out in a boat with the fishermen and catch mackerel; if they are lucky they might spot a porpoise, a sunfish or a dolphin in the bay. There are real dinosaurs for them to discover at the museum and at Dinosaurland and in the shops around the town, but if they want to find their own they can go out along the eastern beaches at low tide with Paddy or Chris from the museum or on one of the other organised fossil walks and find fossils for themselves.

Throughout the summer there are events especially to entertain families and children. The Lifeboat Week every summer runs spectacular events for children, as does the Regatta and Carnival Week. Mary Anning’s birthday is celebrated with fossil fun in May, and the annual Christmas Pudding Race in December is a family favourite. Our wonderfully unspoilt Art Deco Regent Cinema

shows a programme of family films and the Marine Theatre, the smallest public theatre in the country, puts on performances with families in mind during the school holidays.

Because Lyme is a small town held in the embrace of the Lim valley where traffic moves more slowly, parents can safely allow their older children the freedom to explore alone, to taste independence. They can go off to the shops to buy fresh bread from the bakery for breakfast and wander around unaccompanied to discover Lyme for themselves.

There is mini golf and table tennis in the gardens overlooking the beach, and the Marine Aquarium on The Cobb, where Max the Mullet Whisperer will be happy to show off his fish. And if youngsters have energy left after enjoying the sea, a short walk away are the children’s playing fields just off Church Street.

The Home of PalaeontologyThe science of palaeontology (the study of extinct animals and plants through fossilised remains) had started to develop in the late 1700s. It didn’t take long for Lyme Regis to discover that its unstable cliffs were, in fact, a treasure trove of the remains of marine creatures that thronged the Jurassic seas and the town started to welcome well-to-do Georgian collectors.

FOSSILS IN LYME

Buckland, Conybeare and De La Beche were the pioneers of this new science and regular visitors to Lyme, but not all fossil hunters were male. In the early 1800s the three Philpot sisters came to live in the town and started forming a collection of local fossils. The town’s museum is their legacy not just to Lyme, but to palaeontology itself. They found many unknown species, which are now part of the Oxford University collection.

The Philpot sisters took on a young girl from the town to help them, one Mary Anning. Mary and her brother Joseph were keen collectors and Mary, in particular, had an extraordinary instinct for finding specimens. In 1824 she discovered the first complete Plesiosaurus, followed by the first complete (and still very rare) Dimorphodon, a winged (gliding) lizard.

The Philpot Museum, at the bottom of Broad Street, just past the traffic lights, houses a fascinating collection recording the Jurassic history of

Lyme Regis, as well as a wealth of other exhibits from the town’s extraordinary life.

If you would like to find fossils for yourself, equip yourself with boots, hammer, goggles and, most importantly, the Tide Tables. The main beach for finding them is to the east of the town towards Charmouth but the unwary can get cut off by the incoming tide.

A safer and more interesting way to do it is to take one of the many guided walks with a trained fossiler. These are run from the museum and not only are you almost certain to find at least one fossil, but you will learn a huge amount about the lives of these fascinating creatures.

Cultural ConnectionsLyme has always had a fascination for artists, writers and dramatists – a lure which has drawn creative people here for almost 300 years.

CULTURE IN LYME

The ever-changing light and the scenery inspire visual artists. JMW Turner painted many views of the town; James McNeill Whistler painted here during the autumn of 1895 and the glass engraver, Sir Laurence Whistler, spent most of his life in Silver Street.

Today, the town hosts a thriving art community and buzzes with galleries and studios. Every year the Lyme Regis ArtsFest draws together a multitude of talent and, every two years, all the studios in the town are open as part of Dorset Art Weeks. Exhibitions are regular events in the Town Mill Malthouse and Galleries.

Many writers have also been inspired by the town. In 1727 Henry Fielding came here and tried to elope with a 15-year-old heiress, inspiring one of the themes of Tom Jones.

GK Chesterton and JRR Tolkein were regular visitors. PG Wodehouse came to stay with friends and made Lyme the setting for Love Among the

Chickens and Beatrix Potter loved the town and made it the setting for Little Pig Robinson.

John Fowles lived much of his life in the town and its wild scenery inspired the novel The French Lieutenant’s Woman in 1969, made into a film 12 years later.

Jane Austen visited the town on a number of occasions and set much of her novel Persuasion in Lyme Regis, including the pivotal scene when Louisa Musgrove is injured when jumping from the steps on The Cobb. Many think this happened from Granny’s Teeth, but as they weren’t built until after 1816, when the book was completed, it was more likely Austen imagined her falling from the Gin Shop steps nearer the slipway, as is borne out by an engraving from the time. The town has been used for two film adaptations of the story.

For those who prefer the dramatic arts we can offer a wide variety of performances at the Marine

Theatre. It shows everything from contemporary music to opera, from children’s entertainers to serious drama and from pantomime pranks to fossil frolics.

A World Class Creative Community Lyme Regis attracts artisans of the highest calibre whose work you will find in the shops and galleries around the town.

The Artisan Quarter is centred around the Town Mill and Coombe Street. Here you can find potters working alongside clothing designers, the work of sculptors, jewellers and glassmakers, and award-winning specialist food shops.

Page 13: LYME REGISmediafiles.thedms.co.uk/Publication/GB-LR/cms/pdf/Lyme... · 2015-01-13 · Lyme Regis is a town like no other. Nestled around the mouth of the River Lim (the Buddle, to

In Coombe Street you will find the sort of unique, hand-made gifts that are becoming so hard to find these days and, close by, a knitwear designer with an international clientele who sells her items of rare, wearable beauty only from her Lyme Regis shop. Across the street is a bakery of wide renown. Turn the corner into the Town Mill and you will find a silversmith’s studio and more arts and crafts to delight you.

There has been a potter here for many years and above him is a period couturier. There are three galleries here where local photographers, sculptors, textile designers and artists display their work throughout the year. There is also a specialist cheesemonger and a micro-brewery (one of two in the town).

Wander along to the end of Coombe Street, cross the River Lim and proceed gently up the steep but charming Sherborne Lane and you will find yourself at the bottom of Silver

Street. Here you can find the fragrant premises of our artisan soap-maker who actually makes her wares behind the shop alongside one of the UK’s top baristas.

The 700-year-old restored working watermill is at the heart of the Town Mill’s cobbled courtyard and is open all the year. Hear the millstream drive the giant waterwheel to turn the millstones that grind the organic wheat. Smell and touch the freshly ground wholemeal flour. Watch the miller shovel the flour into bags you can take home to bake with.

Around the CobbThe Cobb was built not just as a harbour to protect ships, but also to act as a breakwater to protect the town. The first drawing of The Cobb dates back to the late 1500s and shows wooden piles driven into the seabed and in-filled with huge rocks. Since then it has undergone many changes and has been extended in length and height. It was connected to the mainland in 1756 and the North Wall was built in 1823.

The harbour is busy at all times of year. The Marine Aquarium is a great attraction, with its trained shoal of mullet and many other local species. Commercial trawlers still operate from Lyme, and visitors can fish for mackerel with one of the many local fishermen. Fishing is also popular off the end of The Cobb and Monmouth Beach, and crabbing in the harbour and off the North Wall are favourite pastimes for children.

Lyme Regis has a thriving Boat Building Academy near The Cobb. Founded in 1997, it offers courses lasting from two days to a full academic year and attracts all sorts

of people from school leavers to those wanting a career change, or retirees who have always wanted to build their own boat. The academy is also the birthplace of the Lyme Regis Gig Club’s hand-built Cornish pilot gigs.

Gigs are 32ft long rowing boats dating back to the late 18th century. Since its inception in 2008, the Lyme Regis club has grown from strength to strength.

Gig rowers are a committed and hardy breed, and can be seen out training all year round. In 2014, two of the Lyme gig rowers, Chris Walters and Elliott Dale rowed the Atlantic in just under 60 days.

We have some of the best sailing waters in the country, so our Sailing Club welcomes visitors and runs a programme of events and RYA training courses for both adults and children.

We also welcome visiting sailors. Our harbour facilities for those arriving by sea include 11 seasonal visitors’ moorings and a pontoon accessible at all states of the tide. Lyme is an ideal stop-over for sailors crossing Lyme Bay. Visiting yachtsmen have access to showers, fresh water and power on request. Navigation information is included in Reeds Nautical Almanac. Active LymeAlways something to do, on land or seaThere are many sports, activities and ways to burn off energy in Lyme. Hikers are catered for with strenuous walks both to the east and west of the town. The seven-mile western walk along the Undercliff National Nature Reserve follows the coast to Axmouth. The path – well marked but rough in places – takes you through some stunning scenery, its special microclimate offering fertile habitats for unusual plant and animal life. Once on it you have to continue to the end: there are no routes inland.

Walking east takes you to Charmouth and Golden Cap beyond, the highest point on the south coast with breathtaking views. Both walks have handy pubs at the end, and the X53 bus can bring you back from both Axmouth and Chideock.

If you prefer your walk to be more of a gentle stroll without hills you can wander inland along the banks of the Lim. Start at the mouth of the river and meander along Coombe Street, take in the Town Mill part of town then continue a mile or so inland to the Old Mill and onwards into Uplyme.

Of course the sea, too, offers so much to do. You can fish off The Cobb or go out and chase mackerel with the local fishermen or in a hired boat. You can learn paddle-boarding, sailing or windsurfing or take out a kayak and pootle around in the bay. Always check the predicted weather conditions before going out though, and make sure you have sufficient safety equipment with you.

Lyme also offers other land activities such as mini golf and table tennis in the Lister Gardens. The town’s golf club also welcomes visiting players on a pay and play basis after 9.30am most days. The bowls club, in its glorious setting down by The Cobb, also welcomes visiting players.

We also welcome cyclists who enjoy the challenge of our hills. Lyme Regis is on the route of the newly-established Tour de Manche, stretching from Poole to Plymouth and from there, via ferry to Roscoff, ending in St Malo.

A visit to the artisan quarter will bring you to what many think of as the ‘ploughman’s lunch capital of the world’: in Coombe Street you can select your bread from the bakery then take a short walk to an award-winning selection of English cheeses and condiments at the cheesemonger before selecting a local ale from the Town Mill Brewery opposite (one of two micro- breweries in the town) where you can get advice on the most suitable beverage to compliment your lunch.

In Broad Street you will find an organic food shop with café and

Wi-Fi and a delicatessen specialising in local produce. A stroll through the gardens to The Cobb will bring you to the harbour’s fishmonger in the Old Watch House with fish being brought in fresh from local harbours along the south west coast.

Lyme is host to a wide variety of restaurants. You can enjoy seafood with a beautiful view over The Cobb from the seafront gardens, partake of fishy delicacies on Marine Parade, find an intimate Italian hideaway in Church and Coombe Streets or visit the lively Indian restaurant on Broad Street.

Lyme abounds with gastronomic delights. The town has many specialist food shops and its restaurants cater for every taste from haute cuisine to gastro-pub to fish and chips.

Forde AbbeyIf you are looking for history of a different kind, you could visit the beautiful Forde Abbey. Originally a Cistercian monastery until Henry VIII intervened, it now offers its splendours to the public, who can enjoy the state rooms, the gardens and nursery and pick your own fruit. Forde Abbey is located about 10 miles from Lyme, towards Chard.

Abbotsbury Swannery and GardensAbbotsbury offers a full day’s worth of treats. The first is the beautiful drive east along the coast road to get there! The views are truly magnificent. The Swannery was established by monks in the 11th century and has hundreds of breeding swans roaming free: it is a sanctuary, not a zoo, and they are all free flying. Abbotsbury also has 20 acres of exotic sub-tropical gardens, a children’s farm and an adventure playground in which to let off steam.

Thomas HardyMany Hardy-lovers come to this part of Dorset to see for themselves the landscapes and towns that were an integral part of his novels and poetry. His birthplace at Higher Bockhampton has been open for many years, and the National Trust has just restored and opened Hardy’s house in Dorchester, Max Gate. They plan a series of events during the season to celebrate this most English of authors.

One is on the Charmouth Road (DT7 3DW) to the east, and the other is Holmbush car park on the Sidmouth Road (DT7 3LD) to the west. Both car parks are within walking distance of the town centre and seafront, although there are some hills to contend with.

Seafront ParkingThese are located at The Cobb end of the seafront and are very convenient for the beaches and harbour (DT7 3JJ). These car parks are more expensive for longer stays.
