Najvi{i vrh: Obzova (569 m). Oko otokase nalazi dvadesetak oto~i}a, hridi i grebena:Prvi}, Galun, Zec, Plavnik, Kormati,Ko{ljun, Sv. Marko i dr. U 68 naselja naotoku `ivi 16.402 stanovnika.Reljef je kr{ki, sa zanimljivim kr{kimoblicima: {piljama i pe}inama (Biserujkakod Dobrinja), dolcima i {krapama.Sredi{njim dijelom Krka pru`aju se plodnapolja: Omi{aljsko, Dobrinjsko, Vrbni~ko iBa{}ansko.Obala je dobro razvedena, s mnogim zaljevi-ma, uvalama i prirodnim {ljun~animpla`ama. Najve}i zaljevi su Soline (ljekovitoblato) i Puntarska draga.Klima: Ugodna i blaga mediteranskaklima. Prosje~na ljetna temperatura zraka22,8 °C, mora 23 - 25 °C.Glavni vjetrovi: bura, jugo i maestral.Prema broju sun~anih sati u godini(2.500), Krk se ubraja u najsun~anijedijelove Europe.Vode: Na otoku se nalaze dva jezera: Jezeroi Ponikva, i tri rijeke: Veli ili Dobrinjskipotok,Vretenica i Vela Rika.Vegetacija: U sredi{njem i zapadnom dijeluotoka prevladavaju {ume, te uzgojene kul-ture mediteranskog vo}a i povr}a,vinograda i maslinika. Sjeverni i ju`ni Krk~ine kamenjari i pa{njaci.Rezervati {umske vegetacije: {umehrasta crnike (Quercus ilex) na Glavotokui na oto~i}u Ko{ljunu.Ornitolo{ki rezervati: otok Prvi} isjeveroisto~ni strmi dio obale otokaKrka, na kojima obitavaju bjeloglavi supovi(Gyps fulvus Habl.).Posebnost kr~koga krajolika ~ine terasastisuhozidi (groma~e) i pastirski mrgari,sa~uvani na kr{evitim zaravnima iznadBa{}anske udoline.E - Briga o o~uvanju i za{titi okoli{a vodise neprekidno i sustavno. Potvrda su iplave zastave: u marini Punat, Velojpla`i u Ba{ki,AC Je`evac, pla`a Lukobran,FKK Politin i pla`a Koralj u Krku.

he Island of Krk is in the Bay of Kvarneror Quarnero. It is the biggest island inthe Adriatic, with an area of 409.9 square

kilometres. The highest peak is Obzova, at 569 m.There are some twenty little islands, islets, rocksand reefs around the main island: Prvi}, Galun,Zec, Plavnik, Kormati, Ko{ljun and Sv. Marko (StMark’s). The population of the island, at the lastcount, was 16,402, distributed among 68 settle-ments.The relief is of the karst or limestone variety,with caves and caverns (Biserujka near Dobrinj),with sinkholes and dolines. The central part ofthe island is occupied by fertile fields called,Omi{alj, Dobrinj,Vrbnik and Ba{ka poljes.The coast is highly indented, with a great manybays, coves and naturally pebbly beaches. Thebiggest of the bays are Soline (with its medicinalmud) and Puntarska Draga.Climate. The island boasts a pleasant and mildMediterranean climate. The average summerair temperature is 22.8°C, and the sea watertemperature is 23 - 25°C.The main winds comefrom the north-east, the south and the west -the bora, sirocco and maestral. In terms of inso-lation, Krk is one of the most favoured parts ofEurope, with over 2,500 hours of sun a year.Water features. There are two lakes on theisland, called Jezero and Ponikva, and threerivers: the Veli or Dobrinja Brook, the Vretenicaand the Vela Rika.Plant life. In the central and western part ofthe island there are predominantly woods, alongwith cultivated Mediterranean fruit and vegeta-bles, vineyards and olive groves. Northern andsouthern Krk are given over to stony areas andrough pasture land.Forest reserves. There are Quercus ilex, orholm or evergreen oak, at Glavotok and on thelittle island of Ko{ljun.Bird sanctuaries. The island of Prvi} and thenorth east steep slopes of the coast, where thegriffon vulture resides (Gyps fulvus Habl).A particular feature of the Krk landscapeconsists of the thick drystone walls or groma~e,and the shepherds’ stone-built folds on theplateau area above the Ba{ka valley.E - Care about the preservation and conservationof the environment is ongoing and systematic.Proof of this is given by the blue pennants in thePunat Marina, the Big Beach at Ba{ka, ACJe`evac, beach Lukobran, FKK Politin and beachKoralj in Krk.

plemenima Japoda i Liburna, te roman-skom stanovni{tvu, u sedmom se stolje}upridru`uju Hrvati, koji postupno postajuve}inskim stanovni{tvom na otoku.

Sedam povijesnih oto~kih ka{teladanas je sedam administrativnih jedinica:grad Krk i op}ine: Omi{alj, Malinska,Punat, Ba{ka,Vrbnik i Dobrinj.

Sedam je varijacija ~akavskog narje~jahrvatskog jezika. Sedam je obi~aja,plesova i narodnih no{nji.

Pu~ko glazbalo sopile prastari jeduha~ki instrument, koji je i danas sas-tavni dio svih oto~kih sve~anosti, ~estovezanih uz crkvene blagdane i sveceza{titnike pojedinih mjesta.

Bogatstvo oto~nog folklora svake segodine prezentira na ljetnom Festivalukr~koga folklora i Smotri sopaca otokaKrka.

Poznati su koledvarski obi~aji ukarnevalskom razdoblju, Stomorina (uzblagdan Vele Gospe) u Omi{lju, pastirskiobi~aj razgon (prve nedjelje u srpnju) uVrbniku i brojni drugi.

Tradicijski na~in `ivota oto~ana vezanje uz more (ribarstvo, pomorstvo,brodogradnja), poljoprivredu i sto~arstvo,napose ov~arstvo, koji su se, uz ostaledjelatnosti novijeg datuma, zadr`ali naotoku do danas.

nd the life of the Island ofKrk can be followedthrough the symbolism of

the number seven. In the seventhcentury, the Illyrian tribes of theJapods and Liburnians and theLatin population were joined bythe Croats,who gradually becamethe majority population of theisland.

The seven historical castles ofthe island are today its sevenadministrative centres: the city ofKrk and the communes ofOmi{alj, Malinska, Punat, Ba{ka,Vrbnik and Dobrinj.

There are seven various of theChakavian dialect of Croatian(spoken here). There are sevencustoms, dances and costumes.

The vernacular instrument calledsopile is an ancient wind instru-ment, and today is an integral partof island festivities, often linkedwith the church holidays and thepatron saints of individual places.

The richness of the island folktradition is presented each yearin the summer Festival of FolkTraditions and at the SopilePlayers of the Island of KrkReview.

Some of the well known tradi-tional customs are the singingcustoms during the period ofCarnival, the Stomorina accompa-nying the feast of the Assumptionin Omi{alj, the shepherds’ customcalled razgon, the first Sunday inJuly, in Vrbnik, among others.

The traditional way of life islinked to the sea (fishing, seafaring,shipbuilding), agriculture, stockraising, particularly sheep rearing,which have been retained to thisday, and are now accompanied bysome other activities.

Svje`a riba, {kampi i drugi rakovii {koljke i danas su nezamjenjivi udoma}oj kuhinji oto~ana, kao imnoge vrste priloga od povr}a.Sve naravno pripremljeno iza~injeno kr~kim maslinovimuljem izvrsne kakvo}e.

Blagdanski objed gotovo uvijek}e uklju~iti i jela od doma}egtijesta ({urlice, makaruni, njoki) srazli~itim umacima, a posebno jecijenjena i kr~ka janjetina, doma}iov~ji sir i pr{ut.

Sva se ta izvorna kr~ka jela nudei na jelovnicima stotinjak oto~kihrestorana, konoba i drugih ugos-titeljskih objekata, koji tako|erpripremaju i nude jela interna-cionalne kuhinje. Gastro-ponudajedan je od najja~ih aduta kr~koggostoprimstva i turizma.

Oto~ani }e uz to popiti ~a{udoma}eg vina. Preporu~ujemoizvorno suho bijelo vino s kon-troliranim geografskim porijeklom- Vrbni~ku `lahtinu.

Od gro`|a se pripremaju irazli~ite vrste doma}e rakije, s ilibez aromati~nog bilja, koju, premaobi~aju, uz suhe smokve, oto~aninude kao znak dobrodo{lice.

sea, was given back in ancient times.The fresh fish, the shrimp and other

crustaceans and shellfish are today amust in the local cuisine, as are manykinds of vegetable dishes. All this isprepared with Krk olive oil, ofsuperlative quality.

A festive day lunch is almost boundto include food using local pasta,called {urlice, makaroni and njoki, withvarious different kinds of sauce, and aparticular value is placed on Krk lamb,the local sheep’s cheese,and prosciutto.

All these original dishes are to befound on the tables and menus of ahundred island restaurants and tav-erns, which also of course offer thestandard international cuisine. Thewining and dining is one of thestrongest of aces in the hand of theKrk hospitality industry.

With all this, the island people arefond of taking a glass of locally pro-duced wine. We can thoroughly rec-ommend the vernacular dry whitewine with its own appellation con-trolée - Vrbni~ka `lahtina.

Various kinds of local grappa are alsomade from grapes, with or withoutaromatic herb flavourings; accordingto local custom, this, together withdried figs, is offered to newly arrivingguests by way of welcome.
