NEWS & HIGHLIGHTSSTREET DATE: JANUARY 14, 2014

Our top releases for January will help chase away the winter’s chill. Britain’s favorite cellist, Steven Isserlis, is joined by fortepianist Robert Levin for collection of the complete works for cello and piano by Beethoven (p.17) and is featured on the Hyperion début album by pianist Sam Haywood, who is playing works by Isserlis’s grandfather (p.16). January’s four priority releases from harmonia mundi include the Jerusalem Quartet playing Janácek and Smetana (p.12), Richard Egarr playing Handel Suites (p.14), the final installment of Kristian Bezuidenhout’s Mozart series (p.13) and Jean-Guihen Queyras leading the Ensemble Resonanz in works by Berg and Schoenberg (p.11). In other highlights, the acclaimed Beethoven cycle by Onyx artist Jonathan Biss reaches volume four (p.22) and Rick Stotijn presents Basso Bailando, a spirited disc of works for double-bass on Channel (p.9). Two opera releases round out the month, with Orange Mountain’s recording of Philip Glass’s Galileo Galilei with the Portland Opera (p.23) and Aparté’s release of Lully’s Phaéton with Les Talens Lyriques (p.5). Non-classical priorities include three jazz releases - I Hear The Sound by Archie Shepp (p.31), Face Forward, Jeremy with Jeremy Pelt on HighNote (p.33) and a solo album by Omar Sosa entitled Senses (p.34).Accords-Croisés

IMPORT This disc features a collection of works for viola da gamba by CPE Bach. Soloist Emmanuel Guigues studied viola da gamba with such luminaries as Jordi Savall, Paolo Pandolfo and Christophe Coin. She plays and records with several ensembles, notably the Ricercar Consort, la Simphonie du Marais and Doulce Mémoire. Coming from a family of organists, keyboardist Daniel Isoir studied with such great masters as Marek Jablonski, Claude Frank, Paul Badura-Skoda and Paul Tortelier. In addition to leading his ensemble Petite Symphonie, Isoir also works regularly on projects with the Royaumont Foundation and the Bach Academy.

IMPORT Of all Michelangelo Falvetti’s numerous compositions, only two magnificent dialoghi for five or six voices - Il diluvio universale and Nabucco - have survived intact. In these two masterful scores, Falvetti’s music is characterized by a

sensuality and a thoroughly Mediterranean expressivity, combined with studious respect for Baroque musical tradition. Leonardo García Alarcón and Cappella Mediterranea’s previous release of Il Diluvio revived interest in Falvetti, and the recording received the highest critical praise.

IMPORTFounded in 2010, the period instrument ensemble Les Surprises takes its name from Rameau and his opera Les Surprises de l’Amour. Marrying stage drama and chamber music, the group’s début album (appropriately) draws on the music of

18th century French opera, focusing on the music of Jean-Fery Rebel and his son, François. Featuring soprano Juliette Perret and baritone Étienne Bazola, this recording presents a selection of works by both composers arranged for chamber orchestra, shedding new light on a mostly forgotten repertoire.

IMPORT Following on the success of their recording of Bellérophon, Christophe Rousset and Les Talens Lyriques present Phaéton, the eighth tragédie lyrique by Jean-Baptiste Lully and his faithful librettist, Philippe Quinault. It is truly one of their most remarkable creations. First performed in 1683, it proved so popular that it was referred to as the “opera of the people.” It portrays the story of a young man’s temerity in wishing to drive the chariot of his father, the sun god, and the son’s inevitable downfall.

IMPORT The phrase Memento mori (Latin for “remember that you will die”) is a symbolic reminder of the inevitability of death. Catholic prayer oratories in the early years of the 17th century employed the vernacular Italian instead of Latin, a significant

factor in attracting more participants. This works in this collection of ‘moral cantatas’ were designed to heighten the devotional feelings of those attending. The ancient practices of laude, basso ostinato and lamenti, as well as popular new musical genres, including opera, were used as a vehicle for spiritual messages in these works by Monteverdi & Rossi. Geoffroy Jourdain leads Les Cris de Paris in powerful readings of these deeply moving works.

IMPORTViolist Lise Berthaud studied at the Conservatoire de Paris with Gérard Caussé. In 2005, she won the Hindemith Prize at the Geneva International Competition, was short listed by the Victoires de la Musique Classique

2009 as ‘Révélation de l Année’ (Newcomer of the Year) and since September 2013, has been part of the prestigious BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artists scheme. Pianist Adam Laloum studied at the Paris Conservatoire before receiving international recognition when he won first prize at the prestigious Clara Haskil Competition. This collection of works by Schubert, Schumann and Brahms is their first recital together and Berthaud’s début recording.

IMPORTOver the course of his career, Christophe Rousset has consistently excelled – both as a harpsichordist and as the director of Les Talens Lyriques. Following on several critically acclaimed albums of keyboard music for Aparté, Rousset turns to Bach’s great musical testament: the Well-Tempered Clavier. Written 20 years after the first volume, the second book of this collection contains the musical and spiritual legacy of the composer. Rousset performs on a 1628 Ruckers harpsichord, one of the best examples of its kind in the world, which has been preserved in the château de Versailles since 1946.

IMPORT The output of composer Arcangelo Corelli dominates a crucial period in the history of instrumental music. During the years 1681 to 1713, the Pre-classical sonata and concerto grosso reached a degree of maturity, and Corelli’s

became a designated model for all composers of his generation. At the same time, Corelli’s work entirely devoted to bowing and performance became the violin teaching guide for nearly a century at various European schools, and whose first elements are still the basis of today’s techniques. This recording features a collection of sonatas performed by the French chamber ensemble Stravaganza.

IMPORTEthel Bartlett and Rae Robertson both studied with Tobias Matthay in the 1910s. They established a two-piano duo that quickly became the first such team to achieve truly international fame. From the 1930s they based themselves in the USA where they gave important American

premieres of works by Poulenc and Stravinsky. They made first recordings of much of the standard two-piano repertoire and also inspired many new works and arrangements. Given their significance, it is surprising that this important legacy has been completely neglected since the 1950s and this issue is the first CD release ever devoted to their recordings.

IMPORT SACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSDBasso Bailando - mixed Spanish and Italian for ‘dancing bass’ - is the perfect description for the pieces of this collection featuring Dutch Music Prize winner Rick Stotijn, whose début recording of music by Bottesini was met with the highest praise. Stotijn is joined by a cadre of great musicians including violinist Malin Broman, harpist Lavinia Meijer and members of the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra. The repertoire includes arrangements of music by Piazzolla and Falla and an original work by Nino Rota – all ‘border-crossers’ between the worlds of popular and classical music.

IMPORTThe First World War, a crucible of artistic change, intervened between Schoenberg’s Verklärte Nacht and Berg’s Lyric Suite. From opposite sides of that traumatic divide, these works tell stories of adulterous love. Richard Dehmel’s poem that inspired Verklärte Nacht evokes the conception of an illegitimate child and its pardon. The amorous dialogue between Berg and Hanna Fuchs and its painful epilogue form the subtext to the Lyric Suite. Cellist Jean-Guihen Queyras leads the Ensemble Resonanz in striking and virtuosic accounts of both these seminal works of the second Viennese school.

IMPORTThe acclaimed Jerusalem Quartet’s latest release focuses works by two giants of Czech music. Though Smetana, the founder of the Czech national school, and Janácek, his spiritual heir, are best known as operatic composers, they also left strongly autobiographical chamber works. Composed when he was already profoundly deaf, Smetana’s String Quartet No.1 looks back over the different stages of his life. Also written late in life, Janácek’s second quartet, subtitled Intimate Letters, describes his unfulfilled passion for Kamila Stösslová, his junior by 38 years.

IMPORTToday, Handel is best known for his many vocal masterpieces. However, during his lifetime, more copies of his keyboard works were in circulation than Bach’s or Scarlatti’s. A famed virtuoso and improviser, much of Handel’s harpsichord music was never written down. However, in 1720, not long after he had settled in England, a collection of eight ‘Great Suites’ was issued in London. Published by the composer himself, it includes works from both his Hamburg and English periods. The music’s tone is heroic, balancing secular Italianate panache with French nobility and decorum. Performed here by Richard Egarr, this magnificent collection demonstrates Handel’s unique ‘orchestral’ keyboard style and grand sweep.

IMPORTThe 20th-century produced a wealth of talented Jewish violinists. Although the list includes a galaxy of stars, the most extraordinary of all may be the Polish violinist Bronislaw Huberman. Huberman posessed superb technique, but his

legacy goes far beyond that. In the early 1930s, he saw the situation for Jews deteriorating in Europe. So Huberman recruited the finest Jewish musicians to form an orchestra, the Palestine Symphony, later renamed the Israel Philharmonic. This set makes available for the first time recordings from a 1982 festival honoring the centenary of Huberman’s birth. It features a literal who’s-who of the finest violinists of our time.

IMPORTIn 1989, pianist Sam Haywood was awarded the Royal Philharmonic Society’s Julius Isserlis Scholarship. Years later, via his friendship with Julius’s grandson Steven, Haywood discovered Julius Isserlis’s piano compositions. Struck by

the beauty of the music, Haywood decided to make his own performing edi-tion. Julius Isserlis studied with Taneyev and Widor, but the music of Frédéric Chopin seems to have been his strongest influence. The playful virtuosity of several of the works is an indication not only of Isserlis’s own agility on the keyboard but also of that of their dedicatees (including cellist Pablo Casals, who inspired the Ballade, for which Haywood is joined here by Steven Isserlis).

IMPORTOn this recording, Steven Isserlis, together with his regular collaborator, fortepianist Robert Levin, presents a magisterial compendium of Beethoven’s complete works for cello and piano, including Beethoven’s own arrangement of his Horn Sonata. The use of the fortepiano opens up a wealth of sonic possibilities for these works. The five Cello Sonatas span Beethoven’s compositional epochs and comprise the most important cycle of cello sonatas in the entire repertoire. Isserlis writes that the composer, “transforms himself from confident virtuoso to supreme master of classical form, and then beyond that to a mystic exploring strange new worlds of unearthly beauty – a wondrous transfiguration.”

Buitoni Trust. On this disc, Esfahani performs C.P.E. Bach’s six Württemberg Sonatas. His thrilling performances make the best possible case for this dramatic and endlessly imaginative music. The sonatas range stylistically from Sturm und Drang to High Baroque to the idiom of his famous father. Mahan writes in his booklet notes that C.P.E. Bach, “makes the most combative statement possible to assert his new musical language.”

IMPORTOn this album, the halls of Westminster Abbey ring with the voices of choir and organ lifted in the great hymns that are a vital part of England’s national character and history. The recording brings the experience of Abbey occasions – from

royal weddings to state funerals to regular services – into the home. The singing of hymns has its roots in the earliest days of the Christian church and remains a central part of the liturgy. In the Anglican church, and nowhere more so than in Westminster Abbey, this is a tradition that thrives, and where tunes from the sixteenth century sit happily alongside arrangements by the Abbey’s musicians of today.

His choice of subjects for these was at least as wide-ranging as his own interests and achievements. IMPORT Recorded between 1972 and 1976, The Golden Age of French Organ Music is one of the most comprehensive anthologies ever dedicated to the instrument. On it, André Isoir surveys music of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, a period in which the French organ school matured in the service of the Roman Catholic Church. Composers of this period focused on color and timbre, resulting from techniques of instrument building that anticipated the tendencies of the repertory itself. From Titelouze to Dandrieu, the works presented here bear witness to one of the most prosperous periods for French music, which coincides almost exactly with the reigns of Louis XIII and Louis XIV.

IMPORT1801 saw Beethoven’s development of the piano sonata take a dramatic turn, testing the sonata’s limits with a set of slow variations in lieu of a sonata allegro in Op.26, a multi-movement work played without pause in Op.27 No.1, and the remarkable opening movement of the Moonlight. Operatic recitatives are incorporated into the Tempest. These features are without precedent. Volume three of Jonathan Biss’s acclaimed cycle of the sonatas contains two works from this year of experiment and innovation, though the innovations are less brazen – the Pastorale and the somewhat overlooked Op.31 No.1. The third sonata on this disc is one of the most famous of the 32 – the Waldstein, composed in 1803, is a work of life affirming spirit and energy.

DOMESTICOrange Mountain Music presents the world première recording of Philip Glass’s opera Galileo Galilei featuring The Portland Opera Orchestra conducted by Anne Manson. In 2010, the Portland Opera and Anne Manson teamed with Glass’s long-time producer Michael Riesman to produce the Glass masterpiece Orphée. The team reunited in 2012 during a run of performances in Portland to take on Glass’s 2002 opera Galileo Galilei, with a libretto by Mary Zimmerman and Arnold Weinstein, featuring a roster of dynamic singers. The opera draws from letters of Galileo and his family and various other documents to retrospectively journey through Galileo’s life. It explores his religiosity as well as his break with the church, and expands into the greater relationship of science to both religion and art.

IMPORT SACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSDInspired by Mendelssohn’s chamber works, Johannes Brahms went on to define the sextet form. His two glorious String Sextets possess a rare sweetness, the full variety of colors of

both summer and autumn and the power and brilliance of a string orchestra. His works in turn inspired many later composers, most notably Reger and Schoenberg. On this super-audio CD, the Prazák Quartet, augmented by the talents of violist Petr Holman and cellist Vladimír Fortin, offer powerful and virtuosic interpretations of these evergreen chamber favorites.

IMPORT SACD Hybrid/ Stereo/ DSDThis release in Praga’s Reminiscences series features SACD remasterings of stereo recordings made by the great Russian conductor Igor Markevitch. Recorded in 1953, Markevitch leads the Berlin

Philharmonic in Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition and from June 1960, Markevitch conducts Stravinsky’s Symphony of Psalms with the Russian State Academic Choir and Russian Symphony Orchestra. The great soprano Galina Vishnevskaya was at her absolute peak in June 1962. She is heard here in Mussorgsky’s six Russian Songs performed in arrangements penned by Markevitch himself.

IMPORTThe German Music Council campaigns for Germany’s vibrant existence as a land of music. Its renowned Contemporary Music Edition presents a basic listening library of contemporary composition in Germany. This month features two releases in the series. First is a selection of five works by composer Philipp Maintz. Wide ranging in both scoring and content, these works show Maintz as a powerful voice of today. The second features a selection of five works by composer Annesley Black. As a bonus, this release includes a DVD computer game entitled This Feels Great developed specifically for this CD. Renato de Grandis’s forty-eight Preludi per Pianoforte were composed several years after the composer decided, shortly after his 60th birthday, to stop composing. After building a reputation as one of the major composers in Europe’s avant-garde music scene, de Grandis decided to go on retreat. His withdrawal from composing lasted only a few years, however; it appears travelling led him back to music. Considered as a whole, one finds in the Preludes the entire spectrum of de Grandis’s musical thought.

IMPORTFile in: JazzOn September 9, 1971, a riot broke out in Attica Prison, New York State, and quickly spread. Five days later the prison was re-taken by force and 39 people were left dead: 29 prisoners and 10 hostages. At first, the administration tried to blame the guards’ deaths on the rioters, before being forced to renege. In January 1972, Archie Shepp recorded an album entitled Attica Blues in tribute to this rebellion. After the original and the repeat performance at the Palais des Glaces in 1979 by his Attica Blues Orchestra, in 2012, Shepp reprised this fantastic tribute, together with a brilliant and dynamic collective of performers. IMPORTFile in: JazzDuring his six years as Artistic Director of France’s Orchestre National de Jazz, Daniel Yvinec never stopped leading his musicians into new territories, tackling the full range of

contemporary music styles. For his swansong, Yvinec has joined forces with New York producer and arranger Michael Leonhart for a truly inventive and joyous musical celebration. The fruit of the duo’s collaboration is a playlist with a strong futuristic and international flavor, featuring several original pieces mixed alongside a series of reinterpretations that are as unusual as they are innovative. Amongst the artists revisited we find Serge Gainsbourg, Shuggie Otis, Talking Heads and Henry Mancini, whose song The Party provides the album with its felicitous title.

IMPORTFile in: JazzJazz pianists are often judged by the company they keep. Some eventually become soloists and front their own groups, but most have to make their living as accompanists and collaborators,

venturing out sporadically for solo or duo performances. George Cables has certainly achieved the highest marks. He toured as part of the famed Art Blakey Jazz Messengers, together with trumpet player Woody Shaw. In the studio again for HighNote, Cables takes a lifetime of experience and distills it into an unhackneyed program of originals, standards and not-so-standards that pays tribute to those artists whose talent, personality and in some cases genius have left their indelible marks on George Cables the man and the musician.

Omar was invited to an artist residency at EMPAC with Zimbabwean dancer / choreographer Nora Chipaumire to compose the music for Nora’s dance-theater piece, Miriam, inspired partly by the life of legendary South African singer Miriam Makeba. During the residency period, Omar was able to use the state-of-the art facilities at EMPAC, including a magnificent Yamaha CFIII concert grand piano, to record solo piano. Trénet was the first in a venerable line of great singer-songwriters, a spur to the creative energy of the likes of Georges Brassens, Léo Ferré and Serge Gainsbourg. Piaf left an enduring legacy, both to music hall and to musical performers (male and female alike), from Yves Montand to Mireille Mathieu, including Jacques Brel and Annie Cordy.
