This year seems to have flown by, but I have to thank the current UDC Boardof Directors for their tireless work and dedication. They accomplished a lot ofwork, especially updating the manuals and regulations. Thanks to those

members who have gone the extra mile to help UDC move forward. I wish I hadmore time to dedicate to UDC, but unfortunately at this time I just do not. Iknow everyone is very busy, but if we want to keep this club growing and movingforward we must have more volunteers. And those volunteers need to be support-ive of each other. It's the only way we can keep UDC moving forward for the bet-terment of our working Dobermans. We have a small group of hard-workingboard members and non-board members, but we need more.

Let's all keep in mind we are doing this for our working Dobermans. If wedon't, who will?

Please note that I have a new email address. If you have emailed me at thelegacydobermans@msn address, please update your contact list to reflect my newaddress of [email protected]

I wish everyone a successful year and for those able to attend the National, best of luck.

Although I have owned Dobermans andbeen an informed breed enthusiast formore than 35 years, I was blindsided

in 2013 when my 2-year-old Doberman, purchased as a sport competition prospect, received a diagnosis of chronic renal failure.Chronic renal failure is a progressive disorderin which the kidneys slowly lose the abilityto concentrate urine and eliminate wastes. The disease is associated with irreversiblechanges to the kidney structure, such asscarring and loss of nephrons, the functionalunits of the kidney.1 Renal disease can beacquired or inherited.

Symptoms and Diagnosis. I had noticedthat my young Doberman Lucas had beendrinking a lot of water and had beenurinating a lot, sometimes waking me inthe middle of the night to go outside. As hewas a typically boisterous and active youngdog that loved to swim and play in the water,I thought that perhaps his water drinkingbehavior was a play behavior because hewas a very driven dog. Although he wouldoccasionally miss a meal, he was otherwiseacting normal ... very active, attentive, livelyand happy. He never soiled in the house, and never dribbled urine. He maintainedhis weight, and was energetic. I took himin to the veterinarian to be checked out justbecause the behavior was a little unusual, and I wanted to make sure that everythingwas okay.

At the veterinarian’s office, the vet tookLucas’s history. They drew some blood andcollected some urine to send out to the lab,and told me to expect some answers within

48 hours. I received the follow-up call from theveterinarian the following Saturday morningwhile I was at training. Her fateful words were,“Your dog has renal disease.” At that time, Ihadn’t a clue what that really meant.

The veterinarian arrived at this diagnosis byexamining some key values in a complete bloodcount (CBC) and a urine panel, along withLucas’s history. As he was not acting sick, andhad been drinking a lot of water for a fairly longperiod of time (several months), we were notdealing with an acute situation but a chronic one.

The key compounds in the blood used todiagnose renal failure are BUN (blood ureanitrogen), creatinine and phosphorus. Anothercompound, amylase, is often above normal indogs with renal disease. Elevated blood levelsof these compounds, in conjunction with aninability of the dog to concentrate his urine, resulting in a low specific gravity of the urine, areindicative of renal failure. Additional symptomsand conditions associated with renal failure, including proteinuria (loss of protein in the

urine) and high blood pressure. Because thekidney plays such an important role in electrolytebalance and hormone regulation, other seriousconditions may emerge during the treatmentof the chronic renal patient. The veterinarycommunity uses the standard IRIS (InternationalRenal Interest Society) staging assessment todetermine what stage of kidney failure a dogmight be in. www.iris-kidney.com/guidelines/en/staging_ckd.shtml.2

Acute renal failure can be caused by traumatic eventssuch as poisoning or infection. These situations typicallypresent with the dog in obvious distress. If a causative factorfor the distress can be discovered and the dog can betreated, it is possible that she can regain kidney functionand lead a normal life. When a dog is discovered to be inrenal failure, additional diagnostic tests are recommendedto rule out infections such as leptospirosis or tick bornediseases, which can cause symptoms of renal failure. Anultrasound can help to identify possible blockages due tourinary stones and other potentially curable causes ofkidney failure.

When acute disease or traumatic conditions have beenruled out in a dog less than two years old who is displayingsymptoms of renal failure, Juvenile Renal Disease is stronglysuspected by the veterinarian.3 This is a general term thatcan include several abnormalities or disease conditions ofthe kidneys that can arise from a condition called renal

dysplasia, or RD. This is a condition in which the kidneytissue fails to differentiate properly during gestation andthe first few weeks of life. The two terms are often usedinterchangeably. The definitive diagnosis for Juvenile RenalDisease or Renal Dysplasia is by wedge biopsy of the kidney(a surgical procedure that must be done under anesthesia)or by an examination of the kidney tissues by a pathologistafter the animal’s death.4

Because the dog’s kidneys do such a good job ofcompensating for damage, a disease condition can goundetected for a long time, and by the time an owner no-tices the symptoms of water drinking (polydipsia) andexcessive urination (polyuria) and the altered blood valuesare discovered in a complete blood count (CBC), the doghas lost 75-80% or more of the functioning kidney tissue.

Kidney continued from page 11 Unlike some body tissues, kidney tissue once lost is gone forever, so a dog can neverheal from chronic renal failure, but sometimes theprogression of the disease can be slowed, and the dogwill feel better with good management.

Chronic renal failure is a progressive disease. Once a dogis diagnosed with chronic renal failure, the owner shouldwork closely with his/her veterinarian to develop anappropriate diet for the dog, based upon blood and urinelab values. Dietary needs will change depending upon thestage of the disease, and additional supportive care such asanti-nausea medications, anti-diarrheal medications, calcium supplementation, phosphorus binders, and bloodpressure medicine will likely be needed as the diseaseprogresses. If is not unusual for a dog with chronic renalfailure to display signs of kidney infection or inflammation, and it is generally agreed among veterinarians that theseinfections, while they can and should be treated for thecomfort of the dog, are a result of the underlying diseasecondition of the kidney, and not necessarily a causativefactor for the renal insufficiency.

When the existing kidney tissue is damaged to thepoint that the dog can no longer filter toxins from hisblood, he will stop eating altogether, because eating makeshim nauseous. He will become dehydrated from thevomiting, diarrhea, and excessive urine output thataccompanies the toxic condition. With continuousveterinary support, including dialysis, some dogs can livea long time with kidney disease, but such intensive andexpensive veterinary care is not usually a realistic optionfor most Doberman owners.

So What About Renal Dysplasia and the Doberman?Renal dysplasia is believed to be caused by a gene mutationthat blocks the differentiation of embryonic renal tissuefrom developing into the mature tissues of the kidney thatare required to properly filter the blood of the byproducts ofmetabolism. Dysplasia can occur in several structures of thekidney. The gene that may be responsible for the disease hasbeen identified by the Canadian researcher Mary Whiteley,Ph.D.5 Her work has been supported by the AmericanMiniature Schnauzer Club, the American Lhasa Apso Club, and the American Shih Tzu Club. A genetic test for thedisease mutation is now available from her company,Dogenes, Inc. A test sample can be collected by cheek cellswab by the owner, and is mailed to the testing center forevaluation. Results are returned within four to six weeks.6

The inheritance of this disease is believed to be similarto cardiomyopathy in that the mutation is an autosomaldominant gene with incomplete penetrance, which meansthat unknown environmental factors can affect theexpression of the gene. This means that a dog with onecopy of the gene may or may not be affected by the disease, but it also means that a dog that is homozygous positive forthe gene might not show signs of disease. Having the genemutation is not a predictor of whether or not the dog willdisplay signs of disease.

Unfortunately, as we have found with cardiomyopathy, this type of defect can be passed from generation to

generation with only an occasional individual displayingsigns of disease, while at the same time the frequency of thegene in the breeding population may continue to increase, especially when a carrier is heavily used in a breedingprogram. According to Whiteley, on average, a dog withone copy of the mutation will pass it on to about half of hisor her puppies, but only about 5 percent of dogs with themutation will be clinically affected with the disease. “Dogsmay have the mutation and be normal,” explains Whiteley.“However, when the disease strikes, it's awful.”

What does this mean to Doberman breeders andenthusiasts? Familial renal disease has been documented inthe breed,7 and an Internet search returns many stories ofrenal failure in both young and old Dobermans. In muchof the literature available on popular pet websites, theDoberman is listed in the top five to seven breeds affectedby chronic renal failure. It is possible that some deathscaused by renal failure, especially in very young puppies, are

undiagnosed. According to Whiteley, the disease conditioncan be seen in puppies as young as 2 months old. It mayalso strike a dog later in life, depending upon thepercentage of the dysplastic (non-differentiated) cells inthe kidney. When a 7 or 8 year old dog is diagnosed withrenal failure, it is likely that the veterinarian and owner willview the diagnosis as an isolated event and not correlatethe disease to a genetic predisposition to the disease. 8 9

At the present time, we do not know the frequency ofthe gene mutation in the existing Doberman population, and there is not clear agreement in the scientific communitythat the mutation is actually responsible for causing diseasein Dobermans.10 Further research is needed and will requirecooperation from Doberman breeders and owners.

Most importantly, the ability to test for the disease doesnot mean that it should be used as a single deciding factorin whether to use a particular dog for breeding or not. All ofa dog’s traits must be considered when making a breedingdecision, and a dog that offers a lot of good things to thebreed can continue to be used selectively. If a dog isdiscovered to be a carrier for RD and that information isused to breed selectively against RD, an RD free status inthe progeny can be achieved within two generations.

Research on renal disease in dogs has been ongoing formany years. Canine renal disease is well documented, and itoccurs in many breeds. The AKC Canine Health Foundationhas issued several grants to study the disease, and research

continues at this time. Easy to administer genetic testingfor this and other heritable diseases is a relatively recentdevelopment in dog breeding. It is important for breedersto become knowledgeable about the tests available, whileat the same time use caution and judgment in using theresults of these tests in making breeding decisions.

In order to better understand heritable renal disease inDobermans, an open, honest discussion about the diseaseneeds to occur within the Doberman community. We needto gain a better understanding of the frequency of thedisease and the mutation in our Doberman population, and begin to assess whether the existence of the mutationis actually correlated to disease in Dobermans. When thedisease strikes, whether in a young dog or an older dog, weneed to be proactive in gathering as much data as possibleabout siblings and progeny, and avail ourselves of thegenetic test to begin to understand whether the testactually correlates to disease in the Doberman.

Speaking from personal experience, a diagnosis of chronicrenal failure in a beloved pet is heartbreaking for the ownerand breeder alike. Members of the United Doberman Clubhave always held genetic health in high regard, and Ibelieve our members can provide leadership in educatingDoberman owners and breeders about this disease by usingthe test as part of their breeding selection process andmaking others aware of the disease in Dobermans. As aDobe owner, you can provide regular updates to the UDCRegistrar (Administrator of Records) to keep the UDCdatabase updated with cause of death of your dogs, and ifyou perform the RD test on your dogs, whether they arebreeding stock or not, record those results with the UDC aswell. If you are (or know) a DPCA member, that informationcan also go into the Dobequest database at www.dobequest.org, which is quite feature-rich but sadly underused.

Common Dog Commands in Several Languages

Ever hear strange sounding dog commands when you areon the training field and wonder what they are? Thischart will translate those foreign words and give you

some of your own to use when training.Note phonetic pronunciations are shown in parentheses.

A slash (“/”) indicates alternative possibilities. Keep in mindthat the translations from English are not always literal, but rather they attempt to reflect the terms used by native-speaking dog trainers of the various languages listed. Goto Dr. P’s website, www4.uwsp.edu/psych/dog/languag1.htm,and click on a command to hear the correct pronunciationfor that command.

The Dr. Jean Dodds Seminar in NewYorkPhoto by Summer Melillo

Note: this article was written based on notes I took during theseminar and from written materials. Any factual or technicalerrors should be blamed on me, not Dr. Dodds. — Bob Cohen

About a dozen years ago, I had an opportunity to listento a presentation by veterinarian W. Jean Dodds at anational specialties in the southwest. That seminar

lasted only a couple of hours and was jam-packed withinformation. When I learned that Dr. Dodds was going to begiving a two-day seminar near Albany, N.Y., last November Ijumped at the opportunity.

She covered an amazing amount of ground in those twodays. I’ll try to cover some of the highlights that I thinkmay be of most interest to our members.

To begin with: Who is Jean Dodds? In the 1960s shewas a research scientist with the New York State HealthDepartment, becoming chief of the Laboratory ofHematology. Two decades later, she moved to Californiaand established Hemopet, the first nonprofit national bloodbank program for animals. She is a co-trustee of the RabiesChallenge Fund Charitable Trust. Many will have heard ofher from her work, along with Dr. Ron Schultz (who is

principle investigator of the Rabies Challenge Fund) gettingthe word out that dogs do not need annual vaccinations formost illnesses. (Google “Dodds vaccination protocol” formore information.)

Dr. Dodds notes that modern vaccine technology giveseffective protection for pets against serious infectiousdiseases. But overvaccination — vaccination when it is notnecessary or giving vaccines that may not be needed —can actually bring risk of adverse reactions. Some of thesereactions are serious. They can be chronically debilitating, even fatal. The pet owner must balance the benefit/riskequation. Many vaccinations can be effective for manyyears, perhaps for the life of the dog. Measuring serumantibody titers can show whether a vaccination is neededor whether an earlier vaccination still provides effectiveprotection. To measure titers, a blood sample is taken andthen sent to a lab.

Dr. Dodds recognizes that reactions to vaccines can varyby breed, which accords with the recommendations of manybreeders to give puppy vaccinations individually (i.e. not touse vaccines with multiple components in one dose), andshe recommends commencing the vaccination series later

By Bob Cohen

Page 17: Inside - United Doberman Club8 uniteddobermanclub.com UDC Focus • Spring 2015 UDC Member Clubs As of Jan. 1, 2015 NortheastRegion NewEngland WorkingDobermans NazareneMondello 256MossHillRoad

than is common, at 9 to 10 weeks. Thereafter, it isrecommended to perform titer tests instead of automaticannual vaccinations to learn if further vaccination isactually necessary or if the dog has sufficient protectionfrom earlier vaccination. After puppyhood, boosters mayonly be needed every three to seven years, if even thatfrequently, for healthy adults (distemper, parvovirus andadenovirus vaccines can be effective for at least nine years),and geriatric dogs should be vaccinated only with caution.Interestingly, vaccine reactions can occur immediately or asmuch as 45 days after administration of the vaccine.

She pointed out other issues with vaccines. Vaccines aregenerally administered with a standard dose without regardto the size or weight of the dog. Yet adverse reactions areinverse to weight, meaning more reactions with smallerdogs. Should a Doberman receive the same vaccine dose asa much smaller Papillon? Dr. Dodds said that there is nomedical reason to give the same amount of vaccineregardless of the dog’s body mass. Should vaccines be giventogether or separately in the same injection? (Monovalentor polyvalent products.) It may be wiser to give evenboosters individually. (I’ve found that it can be difficult tohave your vet give vaccinations containing just one serum.More popular are combination vaccines which immunizeagainst a group of diseases with just one shot. For me, thishas meant custom ordering of monovalent products as vetsaround here do not stock them.)

Combination vaccines may contain antigens other thanthose of the clinically important (“core”) disease agents, some of which may be unnecessary, and their use mayincrease the risk of adverse reactions.

Dr. Dodds is by no means anti-vaccine. She points outthat today’s vaccines are good and effective. Perhaps 4 to 5percent of vaccinated pets may suffer some adverse reactionto vaccination (vaccinosis), with some reactions being veryminor. Yet there are great benefits to vaccination. For “herdhealth,” 70 percent need to be vaccinated, yet overall withdogs only about 50 percent are.

Some individuals will be non-respondents or low-respondents to vaccination. This is a genetic trait. Low- ornon-response can be found through a serum titer test. Thus,Dr. Dodds recommends distemper and parvovirus titersabout four weeks after the last puppy vaccination. If thereis low response, give one more vaccination and re-test.

A measurable titer means there is immunity. There is nobenefit to booster shots if there is measurable immunity. There is no benefit to doing titer tests more often thanevery three years.

Of great interest regarding vaccinations is the ongoingRabies Challenge project. Rabies vaccinations can be quitestressful to a dog, and the present regime of state-mandatedvaccinations at one- or three-year intervals is largely arbitrary.

The project is well into its sixth year and seeks to providea scientific basis for extending the time between state-law-mandated boosters for rabies vaccinations. They have foundthat all but a very few dogs have immunity to rabies at apoint six-and-one-half years after vaccination. The period ofeffective immunity may be even longer, as it is for othervaccines. Dr. Dodds expects to be writing a paper withProfessor Ron Schultz as coauthor. They expect to provide ascientific basis for a new rabies vaccination protocol withless frequent required vaccinations, and acceptance of titertesting in lieu of vaccination.

I’d known of Hemopet as a place that does titer testingof blood samples so that a dog owner can find out ifpreviously given vaccinations are sufficient to haveconferred immunity, obviating the need for additionalvaccinations (at least at the time of the sample). But that isjust one facet of Hemopet. It is also involved with rescue ofretired racing Greyhounds and with a canine blood bankthat supplies dog blood and blood products to veterinarians.Another service offered by Hemopet is a saliva sample-basedtest for food sensitivity or intolerance. There is plenty ofinformation on these topics at the Hemopet website. (Thisisn’t intended to be a commercial for Hemopet, but I wasunaware of the range of its activities, and I suspect thatmany readers would similarly be unaware.)

Dr. Dodds spent considerable time discussing illnessesthat are of much greater concern to people with breedsother than mine. As she discussed these diseases, I wasstruck by how many afflict some breeds and I am gratefulthat my own breed is a fairly healthy breed, with few ofthese genetically based diseases.

There are many autoimmune diseases that can afflictdogs. But even with a condition that is linked to a givenbreed, not every individual will suffer from the diseases.Autoimmune disease can be understood with the benefit ofa Venn diagram showing that disease manifests when thereis a combination of factors: genetics, virus, sex hormonesand stress. Autoimmunity can develop in geneticallysusceptible individuals and may be triggered byenvironmental agents. Development of the conditionis the result of the sum of genetic and environmentalactors that override normal mechanics of self-tolerance.

Studies have shown that the genome is programmedfor health and longevity. Diet and good nutrition are,not surprisingly, important in good health for our dogs. Dr.Dodds noted that modern dogs share 99.8 percent of geneswith wolves. There are 122 genes located in the remaining.2 percent. Dogs have three specific genes that controldigestion and utilization of starch. Modern dogs are adaptedto eat and utilize more starch than wolves. They have alsoadapted to deal with stress. (Necessary if they’re going tolive with people, I presume!)

Dr. Dodds stated that nutrition is the most importantfactor for human and animal health. The emerging field ofnutrigenomics studies the molecular relationships betweennutrition and the response of genes in promoting health.Genetic differences between individuals lead to variations indietary requirements for energy and nutrient needs, and tomaintain health. This may lead to customizing diets — inhumans and dogs — to better promote individual health.

Honoring UDC Service Dogsthat Passed Away in 2014

Compiled and submitted by Michelle L. Limoges (Current as of January 2015.)

First Strykes’ Way of theWarrior“Gabe”

(2007 – 2013)Owner/handler: Maria Ciski, KansasDam: Irinland Emili Ester, CGC,Certified SAR-HRD, WAC, BH

Sire: Ch. Czech., Bdsgr., Kob Black Gong,ScH-I, IPO-I

Breeder: Tiffany Mahaffey Brizendine

Gabe had an amazing personality — confident, inquisitive, fearless and very smart. He was adistinctive, really big boy with a “larger than life”personality that masked a kind and loving spirit.

As a Human Remains Detection dog, Gabe hada solid work ethic, generally working quickly andefficiently. He could go into a search sector, clearit and be done with surprising speed and accuracy. It was that ability, combined with his personality, which made him a successful search dog.

Unfortunately, Gabe’s working career was cutshort with an early cancer diagnosis. In spite ofthat, he had accomplished a lot before beingretired. Gabe was a certified member of Great PlainsSearch Dogs and an associate member of MichiganSearch and Rescue. As a certified HRD team,Maria and Gabe responded to requests by lawenforcement to find evidence at crime scenes, explosions and cold cases throughout the state ofKansas. The team responded to several tornadoes, most notably the EF-5 multiple-vortex tornado thatstruck Joplin, Mo., in May 2011.

Gabe’s strength and refusal to give up kept him going into retirement. In spite of a diagnosis of cancer in hisnose, he learned to compensate and utilized the side of his nose that remained cancer-free to locate trainingproblems. He loved to work, and in spite of his disease never lost his desire to get out and train with Maria.

It was after his retirement that one of his most important roles developed. He became the constantcompanion and nanny for an elderly 91-year-old woman. During the day, he remained constantly at her side.He checked her and her room every morning and evening, and alerted Maria if anything happened. He neverleft the woman’s side and, in truth, became her personal therapy dog. Their friendship and his many anticsbecame her constant source of delight and endless stories.

Unfortunately, even after extensive cancer therapy, Gabe passed away early in 2014.

“Andor” Von Hess(2007-2014)

Owner/handler: Pam Burns, MichiganSire: Agir Miss Jakoso | Dam: Ascomannis Leika

Breeder: Ivan Rios

Andor was born in Virginia to a dam that did French Ringand a sire that had done Schutzhund. I had high hopes ofgetting a nice Human Remains Detection dog when wewent to test the litter. He tested so much higher than thepuppy I initially liked. I had to take him! He was thesmallest of the boys. He got into the car and neverlooked back. Anyone who met Andor recognized histotal attachment to me. I was his person!

Andor had big paws to fill, as Copper had DCM and hehad to learn quickly, often working the same problemsthat Copper did. He went on his first search before he was18 months old, working two solid days and handled it likehe'd been doing it for years. He continued to work on manysearches in Michigan and surrounding states throughouthis life, having made several finds.

His favorite searches were historical. He lovedreconstructing a cemetery!

Andor enjoyed living on the lake, swimming and retrieving a bumper off the dock. He took to agility with apassion and would critic any televised performances with grumbles. He was a very well-traveled boy betweensearches, seminars and vacations. It didn't matter what we did as long as he was with me; he was fine with it.

While he really wasn't a social kind of guy, over the years he expanded his human and canine circle of friends. In his final months, Andor did several children's demos as well as doing therapy work at the nursing home, makinga difference until the end.

Andor left me far too early, leaving a big set of paws to fill for my new puppy, Trace.

Questwood’s Kisatchie Man “Jäger”(2003-2014)

Owner: Irene Korotev, MissouriSire: Quinto von Falkenfeld | Dam: Biemuller’s Naughty Lola

Breeder: Peter Betchley

Jäger became a member of Missouri Search and Rescue K-9 at threemonths of age. He became operational two years later in 2005, andearned a CD in the AKC obedience ring the same month. He wasoperational in area search, land and water cadaver, light disaster, and became very proficient in trailing, which ended up being hisforte. He certified in 2009 with the North American Police WorkingDog Association in Cadaver.

He was part of the heavy rescue task force with the area fire de-partments, and worked toward certification under SUSAR (StateUrban Search and Rescue) standards.

Jäger had a very productive working life, participating in morethan 150 searches. Jäger was lucky enough to be successful on manyof his searches, and as a result of one memorable case he wasawarded a Certificate of Appreciation from the Lee’s Summit PoliceDepartment. This honor was regarding his work in locating asuicidal man before he could harm himself. The police departmenthad been searching for the man for several hours prior to the team’sarrival on scent; Jäger found him within 15 minutes.

In 2008, Jäger was not only selected as the DPCA SAR Dobermanof the Year but also UDC Service Dog of the Year in 2011. Ireneand husband Dave along with SAR Doberman Lexi are missinghim very much.
