All cranes learn how tobuild from their instincts inthe nest. Jason A. Souzalearned how to build fromhis grandfather’s crane —the heavy iron version, thatis, not the long-legged bird.

Souza, owner ofAmerican ExcavatingContractors Inc., on CapeCod, learned about the con-struction of handmade stonewalls and the powerfulmachinery needed to moveand pile large stones fromhis mentor and grandfatherGeorge Rapoza, while still afledgling, just out of the nest, himself.

Rapoza had established asuccessful crane company,Rapoza’s Crane Service,East Falmouth, Mass. Inlater years, however, hisbusiness waned, and Rapozastarted Azopar Corp., a related excavation business, in theearly 1980s.

As a child, Souza would go to work job sites with hisgrandfather and then, as a fascinated teenager, would workon-site with him as a laborer. cranes parked on for stability while working on or around thebeach. He was well-known for building jetties and sea wallsfrom Provincetown, Mass., to the Jersey Shore.

Berger Recycling Celebrates 100th AnniversaryBobcat Skid-Steer Loaders Are Everywhere, Including Painted on Wall at Family-Owned Business

A giant mural painted on the side of one of its buildingscelebrates the 100th year of Berger Recycling in Pawtucket,R.I. The artwork, 100-ft. long and 15-ft. high, highlightslocal landmarks along with the people, processes and equip-ment that have made the family-owned business so success-ful.

Among the items pictured in the mural is a Bobcat skid-steer loader, a fixture on site for almost half the time the com-pany has been in business.

“Bobcat equipment has been important to us, so it’s onlyfitting that we include one of the loaders in the artwork thatillustrates our history,” said Adam Sinel, vice president ofoperations. “We don’t think any other machines would standup to the abuse we put our loaders through. This is a verytough work environment, and for decades our Bobcat load-ers have been exceptionally reliable.”

As a result of the long record of dependable performance, the company currently owns six Bobcat skid-steer loaders tomove materials around the 3-acre recycling center — a newM-Series S750, two S300s, two S130s and a 753, along withattachments such as an angle broom, pallet forks, industrialbuckets with grapples and snow/light material buckets.

Four Generations OldToday the firm is owned by Sam and Charles Sinel, grand-

sons of the founder, Hyman Berger. Their father, Abe, ran thebusiness until his unexpected death in 1958. At that point, their mother Edith took over and spent about a decade incharge until her sons joined the business. Adam, son ofCharles, is the fourth-generation family member to work atthe company.

When asked about Berger Recycling’s history withBobcat equipment, Sam readily produced a bill of sale datedNov. 19, 1965, when Edith purchased an M444 Bobcatloader for $3,120.

(L-R) are Charles, Adam and Sam Sinel of Berger Recycling. Charles and Sam are grandsons of the founder, Hyman Berger, and Adam is a fourth-generation family mem-ber who works for the company.

As Souza got older and started getting his own jobs (as aDBA), he rented his grandfather’s old equipment, much ofwhich had seen better days and was in need of repair. “By the early 80s, Grandpa’s old three-quarter-yard

LIMA cranes had become obsolete and parts were hard tocome by. Whenever possible, stone walls were constructedprimarily with excavators and backhoes,” he said. But Souza would not be deterred. The pull of the crane

was too strong. In 1998, at the age of 26, he started a firmcalled Above Grade Excavating. Four years later, how-ever, he found himself in the wrong kind of hole.In 2002, Souza took on a partner because he needed

to expand the business, needed someone to handle theclerical operation and he needed more funding.Unfortunately, the partnership floundered after twoyears, because of creative differences. Souza’s intentions were to go to court and divide the

business assets amicably. But after a surprising upset inSuperior Court, Souza found that once his ex-partnerput up a substantial cash bond, he, and not Souza, wasput in control of Above Grade Inc., during the dissolu-tion.“All I was left with was an old Dodge pickup, some

rakes, some shovels and most of the customers,” saidSouza.

He had always maintained solid relationships with hiscustomers and his vendors, so he spoke to them about whathad happened and, fortified by their positive input, was con-vinced he should regroup, stay in the industry and pursue hisown company, just a few days after the dissolution of AboveGrade.“I called my insurance agent and after post-dating a check

out for 30 days, I was able to secure a Workers Comp andGeneral Liability policy,” admitted Souza. “Once that wasestablished, we hit the ground running, sunrise to sunset, seven days a week, rain or shine.”As a result, American Excavating Contractors was found-

ed in July 2004, by Souza and his then-fiancée, now wife,

Stacey.Headquartered in Mashpee, Mass., the middle of Cape

Cod, American Excavating Co. offers a complete array offull site development: excavation, Title V septic installation, boulder retaining walls, demolition, drainage, landscapeconstruction, tree removal and more (a full list is on its Website). The company also performs commercial and residen-tial services. While the company’s home offices are in Mashpee, its

small fleet of trucks and equipment is located in EastFalmouth, Mass.

Truly a Family AffairOver the past nine years, Souza has reclaimed a niche in

the local market. And, from grandfather to grandson, hus-band to wife, it is truly a family operation.“Yes, our family business has grown. My wife Stacey is

the office manager, but will work on-site from time to time.Jason Jr. is now 17 years old and he has spent the last couplesummers going to work with Dad and learning the trade,”said Souza. “Even our three-year-old, Wyatt, helps Dadwash the big trucks when Dad comes home, and has helpedus land jobs.”American Excavating employs several full-time workers

and uses various local sub-contractors on jobs. Services have

expanded as well as family.“We now offer septic financing, which is done through

Barnstable County. We also have done some landscape con-struction jobs to keep the company busy in slow times,” saidSouza. “We also do start-to-finish site development, whichincludes mulch installation, tree work, loam installation, seeding lawns, etc.”For a small company, Souza has taken on some interest-

ing projects, in and around the ocean on challenging CapeCod, including a 10-bedroom house in Oak Bluffs, Martha’sVineyard, on Anthier’s Way, a neighborhood of multi-mil-

lion dollar homes.“The house was 15,000-square feet,” said Souza.

“We spent the entire summer of 2009 in Oak Bluffs,or traveling back and forth on the SteamshipAuthority [ferry shuttle system] across the Bay.”His crew also finished a large boulder retaining in

Barnstable Village on Millway, across from the har-bor. “We also did complete site work, including beach

renourishment, in New Seabury on Squaws Lane,” headded. “First, we performed the demolition of anolder house, the site work, septic installation, land-scape construction and driveway installation.”

Always ReachableSouza’s greatest asset, besides his hard-working wife, is

his personal accessibility.“When you call me, you get me. I treat every job like it is

my own property, while never forgetting that it belongs tomy client,” he said. “Job sites are always left neat and order-ly with roads swept and trash picked up. All clients receivedaily updates via email, pictures and video walk through.Out of town clients especially appreciate this and we arehappy to do this for them. Our smart phones come in handyfor this.”Another asset is endurance, 24/7. This came in very handy

during strenuous operations like the noted New EnglandBlizzard of 2005.“We worked for 155 straight hours, taking only brief

breaks for food and quick naps during a state of emergencyfor the Town of Barnstable. We did around-the-clock snowremoval with a crew of four guys,” said Souza.Safety is a top priority and focus on every job site and

Souza gives wife Stacey tremendous credit for her devotedpartnership (even to the point of editing his answers in thisstory).“I credit my wife for dealing with me during these uncer-

tain times, constructing our Web site and for supporting meand working late nights to complete last- minute proposals,”said Souza.During those “uncertain times” that every contracting

company sustains, Souza said the key to his smaller compa-ny is never refusing any job, no matter its size.“Before, our main focus was heavy construction and pri-

marily the excavation side of the business. Now, we don’tturn down any job, as long as it is within our realm of expert-ise. We don’t turn down a job because it is too small,” hesaid. “I am a universal soldier. I oversee every aspect ofevery job and am always available to answer client’s ques-tions or concerns.” For more information, visit www.capecodtitle5septic.com (This story also can be found on Construction

Albanese D&S Inc. Works Night Shift on Boston Pipeline Downtown Boston may not be known as the

city that never sleeps, but for the next two years,it will be giving New York a run for its money.Just last month, a two-year-long sewer and stormwater pipeline project got under way in down-town Boston. All the construction work on thisproject will take place overnight between thehours of 7 p.m. and 5 a.m. The overnight workhours allow the construction to be completed ina manner that causes the least disruption in termsof foot and commuter traffic and delivery ofwater utility services to residents.Today, a single underground pipeline carries

both storm water and sewage to the city’s watertreatment plant. With the growth of the city overtime, both the storm water and sewer feedinginto the single pipeline resulted in flooding of thecity’s water treatment plant during severestorms. In order to correct the problem, theBoston Water and Sewage Commission(BWSC) needed to come up with a plan to divertthe storm water away from the plant since it was-n’t necessary to treat it. As a result, the BWSCdeveloped a strategic construction plan to com-pletely separate the storm water from the sewerline. The project that would remove the citywidecombined storm water and sewer pipeline cur-rently in place, by installing two separate pipes, one which would carry storm water directly tothe bay, the other which would carry sewer to thetreatment plant was then put out for bid. The 15 million dollar bid was awarded to

Albanese D&S Inc. of Dracut, Mass. “We did a similar job in Hartford not too long

ago,” said Giovanni Albanese, owner ofAlbanese D&S Inc. “We understood the scopeof the work well, and what would be required tocomplete the job on time and on budget.”Albanese and his crew began work exposing

the current pipe one block at a time. To expose

the pipe, they had to carefully penetrate and digthrough the asphalt pavement, then scrape andremove the soil between the pavement and pipe. “One of the biggest challenges on this job is

to avoid hitting underground utility lines whiledigging to access and remove the existing pipe. It’s a slow, but steady process,” said Albanese. In order to minimize any disruptions in deliv-

ery of utility services to nearby residents andarea businesses throughout the constructionproject, temporary, above ground water lineswere installed to bypass the underground flowjust prior to the start of construction. Once theconstruction in an area is complete, the tempo-rary lines are removed with customers beingreconnected to the new lines. To expose the pipe, Albanese and his team

rely on their LiuGong 936D, 81,500 lb. (36,968kg), 280 hp (209 kW) excavator. For the morefinite, compact work, they rely on their LiuGong906C, 13,200 lb. (5,987 kg), 49 hp (36.5 kW)mini-excavator and its petite 6 ft. 3 in. by 19 ft.4 in. (1.9 by 5.9 m) footprint. The 936D is usedto remove large amounts of material utilizing its24 ft. 1 in. (7.3 m) digging depth and 2.09 cu. yd.(1.6 cu m) bucket, the 906c for smaller scalescraping and digging. As the excavators removethe asphalt and soil, the materials are loaded intoa dump truck and taken to a nearby staging yardwhere they are stockpiled. After exposing the current pipeline, Albanese

and his crew work to install temporary trenchboxes prior to laying the new pipe to keep work-ers safe. To install the I-beams that support thetrench box walls, some up to 82 ft. (25 m) belowroad level, Albanese equipped his LiuGong936D excavator with a Daedong Engineeringpile driver attachment. Once the I-beams areinstalled, the steel side panels are brought from

MERIDEN, Conn. (AP) State and feder-al officials on Oct. 1 announced $121 mil-lion in federal funding for a high-speed railproject between New Haven andSpringfield, Mass. The 62-mi. (100 km) project calls for

service every 30 minutes during peak peri-ods and every 60 minutes at other times.Speeds would reach up to 110 miles an hour. Connecticut Gov. Dannel P. Malloy’s

office projects 1.26 million riders annuallyby 2030. “Achieving this milestone means we can

complete the design and construction of newtrack, signal and communication systems, bridge and station infrastructure improve-ments between New Haven and Hartfordand provide an economic boon for theregion,” Malloy said. The $121 million will be combined with

$174 million in state bond financing. Thefunding announced on Monday brings to$191 million the federal commitment to theproject. In total, $365 million in state and

federal funding has been committed to theConnecticut portion of the New England railsystem. Service is expected to begin in 2016,

when service aboard 12 trains a day will beincreased to 34, or 17 round trips. Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., said

that although Congress must figure out howto reduce the federal debt that totals morethan $16 trillion, funding for New Englandhigh-speed rail should be exempt fromspending cuts because the regional rail sys-tem promotes economic development. “There’s no question that federal spend-

ing has to be restrained but this project ismulti-year and multi-use and is a wise use offederal funding to support a critical trans-portation system that benefits the entire NewEngland region,” he said. “It deserves prior-ity.” Malloy, members of Connecticut’s con-

gressional delegation and federal and statetransportation officials announced the fund-ing in Meriden.

Company’s Long History WithBobcat Goes Back 45 Years

“Since that day, we have never usedanother brand,” Adam said. “Other manu-facturers have tried to sell us machines overthe years, but just by looking at their loaders,we knew they wouldn’t hold up as good asBobcat equipment. Just one example — theBobcat tailgate is as rugged as they come;the others looked like they would rip off orpuncture in a second. It’s just not worth it tohave anything other than Bobcat loadersworking in these conditions.”

And when it comes to work, the machinesare kept plenty busy around the recyclingfacility.

Material, including scrap metal, wastepaper, plastic, electronics, wire, textiles andbatteries, are brought in six days a week, often dumped on the ground, sorted by theloaders, and then carried to the conveyor sys-tem that delivers it to the balers. The finalproducts are bales ranging from 1,000 to3,000 lbs. (454 to 1,360 kg).

“We use the S130s to handle the lightermaterial such as paper,” Adam said. “Thosesmaller machines are fantastic. At times weuse them to go into a truck box and grab con-tainers of waste paper and loose cardboard. One of our loading docks has a very narrowturn so the S130s are valuable in navigatingthrough that area.

“The bigger machines — the S300s andthe new S750 — have the power to handlescrap metal with ease,” he continues. “Theytake a beating, but are extremely durable. Wealso use them with the angle broom andwater kit to clean up, both inside and out-side.”

Better Visibility, Improved UptimeThe M-Series S750 has more than met the

expectations of the owners and operators. The sealed, pressurized cab not only keepsout dust and noise better than othermachines, its forward-design cab offers awider view of the work area. And the cab hasmore space for the operator to improve com-fort and productivity.

To maximize uptime, Bobcat M-Seriesloaders have hydraulic pressure-releasequick couplers integrated into the loader liftarm, and a guard provides further protection.Additionally, the M-Series model has alower rear frame that extends past the tail-gate to protect the loader from damage, which is especially beneficial in harsh oper-ating conditions such as recycling facilities.

“It’s a phenomenal machine,” Adam said.“My family has seen firsthand how Bobcatmachines have improved for 47 years, andthe S750 certainly continues that trend.”

This article was reprinted with permissionfrom WorkSaver Magazine, Fall 2012 Issue.

The newest Bobcat loader — an M-Series S750 — easily handles scrap metal with aBobcat industrial grapple and bucket.

are additional innovations of the Warrior 1400X, with the screening angle rangeincreasing by 50 percent from four to six degrees. Standard stockpiling capac-ity on all conveyors has increased by up to 25 percent, but with the chassis riseroption and the telescopic side conveyor option, the fines and mid-grade stock-piling capacity has more than doubled that of a standard Warrior 1400.

Powerscreen X400S Jaw CrusherThe Powerscreen X400S jaw crusher has been developed to incorporate a

fully independent high amplitude, hydraulically driven pre-screen withincreased drop angle on the bottom deck improving machine throughput andoverall capacity. In order to facilitate improved pre-screened material flow, thedischarge opening from the under chute has been increased from .8 to 12.5 in.(20 to 32 cm), allowing faster movement of pre-screened material to bypass thecrushing chamber.

Powerscreen Maxtrak 1300 Cone CrusherThe Powerscreen 1300 Maxtrak is a medium to large sized track mobile

cone crusher, ideally suited to secondary applications such as taking an all infeed from a primary crusher. Based around the 1300 Automax cone crusher, theplant excels in the production of sub-base or aggregates, providing excellent

cubicity, throughput and reduction ratios, according to themanufacturer.

Powerscreen Chieftain 2100S ScreenThe Powerscreen Chieftain 2100S screen is designed for

medium to large scale operators who require large volumesof high specification products. The Chieftain 2100S is thelargest model to feature a high capacity hopper, belt feederand radio controlled tipping grid. Key features include ahydraulically-folding, recirculating conveyor on the 3-deckversion, eliminating the need for a crane on site, and a 2-bearing screen with adjustable screen amplitude andhydraulic screen angle adjustment. The Chieftain 2100S has a popular option of dual power,

which offers users a choice between diesel and electricpower. The additional electric/hydraulic drive system con-nects to an external electric power source to provide powerfor the screen. This option helps to avoid recent fuel priceincreases and addresses environmental requirements man-dated by legislation. Dual Power offers complete flexibilityfor the machine to work alone in remote locations in dieselmode or as part of a multi-machine line up in electric mode.Furthermore, the operator can choose diesel or electric as thepower source through a fully integrated control panel.

Powerscreen Warrior 2400 ScreenSpecially designed for large scale operators in the quarry-

ing and mining sectors, the Warrior 2400 screen is capable ofhandling larger feed sizes and output potentials of up to 881tons per hour (800 tph). Featuring a heavy duty incline screenwith a high amplitude triple shaft drive mechanism, a maxi-mum feed size of up to .04 cu. in. (.75 cu m) on 2.5 solid den-sity and the ability to separate materials at 11.8 in. (30 cm),it is ideally suited to screening, scalping, two or three waysplitting and stockpiling materials such as aggregates, top-soil, coal, construction, demolition waste and iron ore.User benefits include a slide out tail conveyor facility to

aid media access and a load sensing collection conveyor cir-cuit to avoid blockages. The Warrior 2400 is the ultimatesolution for large-scale end users who require a high per-forming versatile screener that remains easy to transport, set-up, operate and maintain, according to the manufacturer.
