In the construction game,there is building; and thenthere is relationship-build-ing.That is the strength of

New England YankeeConstruction LLC (NEYC),Wallingford, Conn., whichprides itself on building rap-port with potential clientsfrom the ground up.“I believe that one of the

key components is relation-ship-building. We have builtsolid relationships with bothcustomers and vendors,”said NEYC founderChristopher Godek. “Theserelationships have enabledus to weather some roughwaters over the last fewyears.“For example,” Godek

continued, “While we wereperforming demolition at aprivate school, the administration asked if we would performthe excavation on campus to upgrade the infrastructure withnatural gas. Our client said our attention to detail, keeping thesite clean, and the care our crews took in treating the campus,like it was their own, was the deciding factor [in awardingthe contract].”Founded in 1997 by Godek, NEYC is entering its 16th

year of operation. Today it is run and managed by Godek andhis wife, Staci.Godek started in the trade in 1990 as a laborer. He moved

up through the ranks at various companies. In 1996, he wasthe manager of an environmental firm. Disenchanted withthe lack of customer service in the construction market,Godek felt it was a good time to venture on his own. He setup shop in Wallingford, about 14 mi. north of New Haven.“Luckily, the economy was chugging along, and helped

with the company’s growth,” said Godek. “Our humblebeginnings were mainly asbestos abatement and lead abate-

ment work. Through theyears, we realized, that totruly serve our customers,we needed to offer moreservices. We have branchedinto full demolition, selec-tive demolition, tankremoval and contaminatedsoil clean-up, to name afew.”Those other “few” include

site work, concrete founda-tions and repairs, structuralshoring and shot blasting,along with a few wrinklesthat can’t be described in afew words.“Since our inception, we

have continued to add serv-ices, based upon the require-ments of our customers. Bylistening to the needs of ourcustomers, we have beenable to add services,” addedGodek.In its 16-year history,

NEYC also has beeninvolved in several notewor-

thy projects. Among them:Groton, Conn. — Navy Northeast Housing“We have performed turnkey work for Navy Northeast

Housing. Due to the Navy’s desire to reduce and replacehousing stock, working through their residential propertymanager we demolished, abated and restored 350 units,”said Godek. “In some cases, the now empty sites were usedto build new housing. In some cases, the sites were restoredto grass, with new sidewalks and curbs. “Our firm would fence the sites, conduct environmental

remediation, consisting of asbestos abatement, tank removaland contaminated soil removal,” he added. “The sites con-sisted of one to 20 units at a time. After environmental reme-diation, NEYC would perform the demolition of the respec-tive structure, and then restore the site.”

Housing project, the company was awarded the contract toperform the same scope of work in Newport, R.I. NEYCdemolished and restored 65 housing units in three differentNavy housing neighborhoods. This project required all workto be performed in active neighborhoods. “During this project, we were awarded a contract for addi-

tional removal of 26 underground fuel storage tanks. Thisproject in itself was not a difficult project. The difficulties ofthis project stemmed from the multitude of undergroundissues that presented themselves,” said Godek. “The entiresite required [us] to perform ground-penetrating radar [GPR]to try and identify underground utilities.”Even after extensive GPR work, utilities were still discov-

ered, he added. Delays caused by multiple stop-and-go-workto avoid breaking any utilities caused the project to be injeopardy of falling behind. Yet, with three weeks left on theschedule, NEYC had finished the underground work, andthrough teamwork with its subcontractors, was able to com-plete the project on time.

Hope Street JV —- Niantic, Conn.“This project was the environmental remediation and

demolition of the former Hermitage facility,” said Godek.“This project had an added degree of difficulty, in that it wassituated adjacent to the town wellhead. All heavy equipmenton site had to be refitted with non-toxic hydraulic fluid. Thisfluid is a vegetable-based fluid, and, if leaked, would notjeopardize the wellhead.”In addition to the known environmental issues, additional

environmental issues were uncovered weekly. NEYC’s

commitment to the environment, customer satisfaction, andsafety became the driving force that kept them on task. “The project was completed, and was a great example of

redevelopment. An environmental liability was turned intohousing,” Godek added.

Chapel Street — New Haven, Conn.This project consisted of demolishing a severely neglect-

ed building located in downtown New Haven. Water dam-age to the building was so severe that the city of New Havencondemned the structure and ordered it to be demolished.Due to this unsafe condition, it could not be accessed forproper environmental testing.An Alternate Work practice was submitted to the state of

Conn. Department of Public Health and approved to load outall debris from demolition as friable asbestos wastes. The challenges on this project were the space constraints.

The west side of the structure was 32 in. (81 cm) from itsadjacent structure and the east side was 4 in. (10 cm) from itsadjacent structure. NEYC had to obtain an obstruction per-mit to use the parking lane for removal of debris. All demo-lition was monitored by a licensed asbestos project monitorand — through use of pool water tankers — debris was keptadequately wet so as not to contaminate outside areas. Upon completion of the demolition, NEYC received an e-

mail from the city of New Haven’s demolition coordinatorletting the company know they did a great job.“Our commitment to customer service makes us stand

out,” said Godek. “More than one customer has been heardto say, ‘We only have to ask you guys once,’ or ‘I don’t haveto worry about New England getting it done.’”The company is truly ‘New England.’ It has performed

work in Connecticut, New Hampshire, Massachusetts,Rhode Island, Vermont, New Jersey and New York. “We will travel anywhere for a good customer,” said

Godek.

In the VaultSometimes, the company’s ability to cut costs makes cus-

tomers beam. Other times, NEYC’s ability to cut beamsmake customers ecstatic.“We were selected to perform the demolition of a 10,000-

square foot concrete vault, by Aurora Products, at the homeof their future headquarters. The vault portion of the buildingwas constructed as an addition. The vault was built as anintegrated portion of the building,” said Godek. “The firstcomplexity of the project was demolishing the vault, whilekeeping the structure in place. “When approached with the problem of how to get it

done, [we] devised a plan to get the project completed via themost cost-effective method. To complete the project, we hadto shore the interior concrete beams of the vault. Followingthis, we saw-cut the concrete beams to separate them fromthe structural columns that were slated to stay,” he added.“Then, the exterior wall of the building was removed to

completed, we began demolishingthe vault itself,” Godek continued.“Due to the sensitive nature of thedemolition we needed to progressin a very deliberate and systemizedmanner. We completed one bay ata time before proceeding forwardand demolishing the next bay.”His crew demolished the vault

using a 5,000 Model G 80 Alliedbrand hydraulic hammer, mountedon a Volvo 290. “We used a Genesis GXP 300

processor to process the rebar forsalvage. The difficult parts of thisphase of the project were the con-fined spaces in which we wereworking and the volume of materi-als produced,” said Godek. The vault was constructed of 18-

in. (46 cm) concrete walls anddecks. All of it was tied togetherwith five mats of 1-in. (2.5 cm) bar.All materials from this projectwere reused. The concrete wascrushed on site and reused in the

fills, and the rebar was sent out assalvage.“Upon completion of the project

we installed a temporary enclosureto the exterior of the building,” saidGodek.

Brotherly Co-Workers for10 Years

Godek cited the exemplarywork of his crew, particularly a pairof brothers. “Michael and Jason Hicks have

been with the company since theearly 2000s. Both started as labor-ers and have progressed within theorganization. Mike is currently afield superintendent and Jasonworks in the office as a projectmanager/estimator,” he said.“This year will mark my 10-

year anniversary working here atNew England YankeeConstruction. I began workinghere when I was 18 years old, driv-ing the box-truck and managingthe warehouse,” said Jason Hicks.“Over the last 10 years, I have pro-gressed through the various posi-tions — from driver to laborer to

site supervisor and now, Iam a project manager andestimator. “The working environ-

ment at NEYC feels morelike we are a big familyand not just a company,”added Hicks. “And thistype of working environ-ment reflects itself to thefield. Every employee atNEYC takes pride in theirwork and strives to do bet-ter for the good of the‘family.’ ” This year also will

mark Mike Hicks’ 10-yearanniversary. Mike Hicks hasworked his way from a laborer to asite superintendent.“Our reputation has spread due

to word of mouth. Most of our callsfor pricing come from clients thathave heard of commitment to cus-tomer service and our dedication toour clients through previous orexisting clients,” said Mike Hicks.New England Yankee

Hundreds of contractors and theirfamilies attended Bobcat ofRhode Island’s Customer

Appreciation Day April 6 in Warwick,R.I.

Stuart Graham owns the only exclu-sive Bobcat store in R.I. along with thethree existing stores in Hartford andStratford, Conn., in addition to WestSpringfield, Mass. His newest 10,000-sq.-ft. location officially opened inSeptember 2012, but his group wantedto greet customers in early spring witha day of raffles, demonstrations, food,sales, music and more.

The afternoon event included a freeraffle of a Stihl Blower, an RC Bobcat,a $50 gift card, and a customizedBobcat hoodie. Dozens of T-shirts andother gifts were handed out. The eventwas fully catered with hot dogs, pulledpork sandwiches, salads, brownies,beverages, and more by Lemon & Oil,a popular Seekonk, Mass., deli caterer.

Stihl Timbersports was on hand toprovide hot saw, overhand chop, andspringboard demonstrations. Outside

the shop, guests enjoyed an excavatoroperator challenge and representativesof Honda and the other manufacturerseach had their own booth.

Outside the garage behind the newshowroom, parts and service represen-tatives Mark Haverly, James Brown,Dave Methe and Perry DeYoungdirected contractors to operate a full-sized Bobcat skid loader by remotecontrol.

Graham said the event is representa-tive of every day at the new Bobcat. “I

want our customers to realize that ourfocus is on customer service,” he said.“We strive every day to provide thehighest level of customer service pos-sible.
