By Jay Adams CEG CORRESPONDENT Any former chicken farmer will tell you, don’t put all your eggs in one basket. That is why ELJ Inc. has diversified its operations to year- round service with a portfolio that includes a history of build- ing some of the most noteworthy roads and road projects in New England and thousands of homes as well. This all started when Everett T. Francis — the father of three sons — founded Francis Brothers Inc. in Bristol, R.I., in 1946. Everett had been a chicken farmer before entering World War II, where he became a decorated hero, receiving the Purple Heart, among other awards. He also was in charge of communications in the Army — a land radio dispatcher who directed naval firearms on seven different islands. “Everett’s father Frank Francis had come from Portugal and purchased land in Bristol and the family became chick- en and vegetable farmers. When Everett returned from the war, he founded Francis Brothers Inc.,” said Everett’s son Christopher, now the third generation involved in the family business. “Everett, my father, and his two brothers, went into the trucking business. My grandfather Frank bought his sons three Ford F8 trucks, dump trucks, and with those trucks, the three brothers, my father and uncles, helped to build the Maine Turnpike.” As time went on, family patriarch Frank, who had pur- chased quite a bit of real estate in town, started to sell surplus materials from the land and started to sub-divide various properties; selling lots and parcels, building roads and build- ing houses to sell. This led to the family beginning a realty company called Francis Realty which traces its start back to the end of the World War. The family business diversified before the term “diversifi- cation” was even coined. “My father-in-law Everett and his brothers also built a golf course in Bristol, named The Bristol Golf Club Inc., which we own,” said Christopher’s wife Patricia of a popular nine- hole course that runs through the heart of the town. Patricia met Christopher when she bartended at the club in the 1980s. Three Noble Sons Patriarch Frank’s future foundation for building

was laid with solid bricks, in still another diversifi-cation of the original company. While still young men working at their original

company Francis Brothers Inc. in the 1940s and 50s,brothers Everett, Louis and Joseph began a housebuilding business with a brick Crete machine. “They created their own bricks and were the first

in the area to build houses with bricks. The compa-ny grew. When my grandfather bought the land, itdeveloped into house building after realty selling,”added Christopher. “They began by developing theirown land and eventually built more than 3,000homes in the area including Bristol, Warren andPortsmouth, R.I. and Fall River, Swansea,Somerset, Dighton and Rehoboth, Mass.” In 1966, 20 years after Francis Brothers started,

Everett established a new name, ELJ Inc., with histwo brothers Louis and Joe. Everett’s two sons, Kevin andChristopher began working in the family business out ofhigh school in the 1980s and have expanded it to includemany other facets of the construction and land developmentindustry. Everett’s wife Theresa also was an intricate part ofthe family business starting in 1959. While maintaining the golf course, the new generation

formed a drilling and blasting corporation, ABlast Inc., in1989, as well as operating Francis Realty which handles 90-plus rental units. Even further diversification came with the

foundation of their crushing business that manufactures andsells stone and recycled materials, called ELJ Materials Inc.,founded and expanded in the mid-1990s. “We sell several types of mulch, sand, screened loam,

compost loam and stone to contractors as well as the gener-al public. We do all types of site and utility work and plowsnow for the state of Rhode Island. We have diversified thebusiness so that it is a productive, year-round corporation,”said Christopher. Those year-round services include excavation, installation

of site utilities, septic systems, demolition work, pool dig-ging, drilling and blasting, residential and commercial sub-divisions and draining systems (infiltrations, infrastructure),hydro-seeding, portable crushing and hydraulic hammering. “My wife Patricia joined ELJ Inc. in 1990 and manages

the office and financial duties,” said Christopher. “My sonCasey, who is 14, has taken a keen interest in the businessand would like to take over some day after college. Healready operates a six-yard loader, excavators and backhoesand farm tractors. He works on Saturdays and all schoolvacations. His twin brother Christopher also is interested, butfocuses on sports more at this point in his life.” Beyond this new fourth generation of the family in oper-

ation, the company has maintained an average of 15 to 20employees each year, seasonally, for 66 years. Through the last decade, two employees have been out-

standing in their work: Danny Cheatom, a foreman who hasbeen with ELJ Inc. for more than 10 years and Fred Hipolito, the company’s mechanic/foreman who has been with thecompany for 10 years. “Both are loyal and excellent employees,” said

Christopher.

Many Familiar Sites ELJ Inc. has worked on site, excavating and building,

some of the more familiar buildings in the region, including:Walgreens, Bristol, R.I.; People’s Credit Union, Bristol, R.I.;Island Self-Storage, Portsmouth, R.I.; and work aroundRaytheon Corporation, Portsmouth, R.I. The company also has been subcontracted for many

Twin State Sand and Gravel Finds Success With KeestrackTwin State Sand and Gravel, a construc-

tion aggregate materials supplier for theupper Connecticut River Valley region ofNew Hampshire and Vermont, was estab-lished in 1947 to supply the concrete andaggregates that would be needed for the con-struction of the Wilder dam. Since 1947Twin State Sand and Gravel has continued toprovide aggregate materials for use inasphalt paving, concrete, utility construction, municipal road maintenance and any otherapplicable uses.Twin State gravel and ledge products

come from its Hartland quarry in NorthHartland, Vt. A wide variety of aggregatematerials also are available at its WestLebanon, N.H., facility. The Lebanon facili-ty is 92-acres and is set up for the processingof stone and asphalt production. All of thematerial originates from the Hartland quarry, which is permitted for 500-acres.

Hurricane Damage Brings Opportunity

In the fall of 2011, Hurricane Irenebrought widespread devastation to Vermontand New Hampshire. According to BudAmes, Twins State Sand and Gravel presi-dent and co-owner, the demand for aggre-gate products in their area after the hurricanewas unbelievable. In order to meet the needfor material Twin State needed to dramati-cally increase its production levels. Thedemand was particularly high for 7-in.minus, which was being spec’d heavily byDOT. In reality, the demand for all sizedmaterials was up significantly.

“Our plant superintendent, Jim Benjamin, recommended that we move in the directionof getting a scalping screener,” said Ames.“To accomplish this we rented a KeestrackFrontier portable tracked scalping screenfrom Equipment East and their representa-tive, Richard Zibell. The Keestrack was tak-ing product directly from our primary jaw. Itwas separating out the 7-inch stone then sep-arating out the mid-size stone 4-inch to 1-1/2-inch to be sent back to be processed bythe cone crusher. The plant also separatedthe 1-1/2 inch minus product, which was tobe sent to the finishing screen.”

“The most impressive feature of theKeestrack was its chain feeder versus the tra-ditional belt feeder,” Benjamin said. “Withthe volume that we needed to produce and inthe time frame that we needed to produce itwe could not afford any down time.Obviously, the life expectancy of a chainfeeder versus a belt feeder is going to be sig-nificantly longer. The Keestrack machinetackled this project and we had no troublewith it whatsoever, which is saying a lotwhen you smash rocks for a living. Duringthis period the Keestrack was a criticalaspect of dramatically increasing our pro-

duction and satisfying the large need for 7-inch stone, which we had not previouslyexperienced. Richard Zibell and theEquipment East staff supported the productvery well and were quite knowledgeablewhen it came to questions about the prod-uct.”

All in the FamilyTwin State Sand and Gravel’s sister com-

pany, Blaktop Inc., is an asphalt pavingcompany, that was founded in 1950 and isheadquartered in West Lebanon, N.H.,where it built the area’s first asphalt plant. Its market area is a 50 mi. radius of theplant. The company now supports threepaving crews and specializes in residential, municipal and commercial paving. Itsasphalt plant supplies asphalt to the otherarea paving contractors and local munici-palities.For more information about Twin State,

AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) Maine state utilities regulatorshave given approval for a Colorado-based company to builda natural gas pipeline through 17 central Maine communi-ties. The state Public Utilities Commission on Jan. 10 granted

approval to Summit Natural Gas. Tim Johnston, executive vice president of Summit Natural

Gas of Maine, a subsidiary of Summit Utilities, told theKennebec Journal that the permitting process has started andthe company hopes to begin construction in the spring. Summit joins Maine Natural Gas, which had previously

won state approval and has already begun laying pipeline inAugusta. Competition between the two companies is expected to

benefit ratepayers. A utilities commission spokeswoman said the vote grants

Summit unconditional authority to serve 17 municipalities inthe Kennebec Valley.

R.I.’s ELJ Inc. Places StrongEmphasis on Charity Workconstructing White Tail Drive, Bristol forDouglas Gablinski Builders; several jobs inRhode Island for Greenwich BayDevelopers; and excavation of Gunite Poolsfor Hendricks Pools in Rhode Island andMassachusetts. They have worked as far away as Maine

and Connecticut, hundreds of miles awayfrom their headquarters. On all these many jobs over the past seven

decades, safety has been of paramountimportance. “We hold MSHA training for all of our

miners when they are hired and we providea refresher course yearly for our existingemployees,” said Christopher. “We also sendthem to Occupational Safety and HealthAdministration (OSHA) 10. We make surethat they are up-to-date on their CPR andfirst aid safety every two years.”

The precautions have worked for all ofthese years. “We have not had any major injuries. We

are very concerned about the health and wel-fare of our employees and we make sure thatthey follow company procedures at alltimes,” added Patricia. A stellar record of finished work at easily

recognizable and well-traveled places, andword of mouth through contractors, homeowners and town officials gets ELJ Inc. mostof its work. “We have a reputation for providing

excellent service. We are very accommodat-ing. We have fair prices, but the work alwaysgets done on time and with excellent quali-ty,” added the couple. “We have receivedwords of praise after the jobs have beendone, due to our employees and our neat andclean and precise work,” said Patricia. “Weare very well diversified and we are capableof doing all of these trades in-house withsubbing out very little work. Our staff iswell-trained and knowledgeable of all phas-es of site, materials, maintenance and devel-opment.” The company holds drainlayers licenses

in several cities in Rhode Island andMassachusetts that come in handy. “Often, we are called for jobs because we

hold these licenses and have a great reputa-tion. In Rhode Island, we hold them inBarrington, Bristol, Cumberland, EastProvidence, Lincoln, Middletown,Pawtucket, West Warwick, and Warren. InMassachusetts, Dighton, Rehoboth,Swansea and Fall River,” said Christopher.

Mattresses as Tools ELJ Inc.’s team is nothing, if not innova-

tive, especially when the job might be a

blast. “Many blasting jobs have been intricate.

For example, a Newport mansion where weblasted underneath the kitchen floor usingbed mattresses, blasting for improvementson several gas stations next to existing gastanks, and blasting for an elevator shaft in anexisting structure in New Bedford, Mass.,”said Christopher. “We completed a job for Berkshire Wilton

LLP, Wilton, Conn. It was a $6 million sum-mer home. We completed all site work, including two septic systems, driveway, walkways, all excavation and utilities. Thejob began in 2010,” Christopher said, “Access to the project was difficult. It was

a private road with narrow access to the site, and it was difficult to mobilize large con-struction equipment around time restrictionsset forth by fellow neighbors,” he added.“We had to be accommodating to all resi-dents.”

Giving Back ELJ Inc. also is in the forefront of charity

work. “We donate to the Gloria Gemma (Breast

Cancer) Foundation, St. Philomena’sSchool, Bristol Fourth of July Committee,Bristol Police for cyber-bulling and theD.A.R.E. program, and the Bristol PoliceI.B.P.O. Local 304, King Phillip LittleLeague and Bristol Youth Wrestling, and toMt. Carmel Church for their annual touch-a-truck fundraiser,” said Patricia, who organiz-es much of this work. “We also have donated to the Rhode

Island Veterans home in honor of my fatherEverett, who passed away in February2011,” added Christopher. “We have donated trucks and trailers

every year to the Bristol Fourth of JulyCommittee for various floats. This year, wedonated an extra truck and trailer to theGloria Gemma Foundation to raise theawareness of breast cancer in the East Bay.This foundation is especially close to myheart, because my wife Patty was diagnosedwith breast cancer in February of 2012,”continued Christopher. “We are also veryconcerned about the youth in our communi-ty, and this is why we continue to donate tothe local Little League, Mt. Carmel Churchand, most importantly, the Bristol PoliceDepartment.”
