While traveling in Korea, staying at hotels can get expensive and motels can ruin the experience - potentially traumatizing if you mistakenly end up at ‘love motels’ notoriously spread around Korea.

Recently, my husband and I stayed at a pension for the first time, and it was an absolutely fabulous and delightful vacay! Lodging at pensions has now become our first ‘go to’ while planning our future trips to explore the peninsula.

Traditionally, a pension is a type of guesthouse or boarding house, similar to that of a bed n’ breakfast. They are usually run by a family, or a group of people that also live in the facility.

Nowadays, as a generation of South Koreans that have been born and or educated overseas returns to South Korea, they bring with them Western tastes, culture and know-how. With that, pensions have become more modern, contemporary, themed and are no longer your ‘run-of-the-mill’ bed n’ breakfasts. People that stay at pensions are vacationers that look forward to new, hip & trendy places to stay, a place they can blog about.

We stayed at “Art in Mono Poly”. We don’t know the reasoning behind the name, but we are so glad we found it. The owners previously lived in the States, spent

some time in Europe and opened up the pension. Surrounded in greenery and other neighboring pensions, Art in Mono Poly has only been open for a year and is one of the newest pensions in the Gyeongju area.

Set in a compound style community of duplexes, this pension is surrounded by greenery and has two swimming pools. Every room has a terrace or balcony patio space fitted with either a hot tub or Jacuzzi and a barbeque grill.

Great for couples and family friendly, Art in Mono Poly has a range of themed rooms including a ‘coffee’ room decorated in cocoa bean sacks, crates and a range of brown and black décor. the Copenhagen room was a clean blue and white deco room with European blue plates on the walls and tiny little porcelain figurines scattered around the room. There is a green botanical themed room, a toy horse themed room, a rustic

ANNIE’SARTICLE 2

themed room, an analog themed room that makes the room look like the interior of a clock, a purple elephant room decorated with… well, elephants and the color purple, and the list can continue.

It took us approximately five hours to drive to Gyeongju from Camp Humphreys, so we road tripped there with another couple, leaving at 7a.m. and reaching there just in time for a late lunch.

Gyeongju is a great area to explore, and honestly, I have never had a bad meal in that area. The four of us went to the first restaurant we saw and had a traditional Korean meal of grilled fish with lots of side dishes and spicy soups.

At approximately 2 p.m., we headed towards the pension and as the property came into view, we were struck with awe as the Euro-style buildings appeared. Dark wood exteriors offset by the mountains and nature in the background. It almost didn’t feel like we were in Korea.

A room at Art in Mono Poly cost us about $140 a night for the ‘Copenhagen’ themed room. The price of the room included a 15,000 won food credit towards setting up our grill with hot coal, some pork belly, pork chops, a radish side dish, Korean lettuce to wrap and eat the meat with and some beer.

Now, that amount of food is good, however we were on VACATION. So if you are like us and love to eat, then do what we did -- plan

ahead and pack a few more provisions for your ‘beef n leaf’ (Korean style) meals, take some rice, take some of the kimchi packs that come packaged at the commissary (if you like kimchi, otherwise make yourself some potato salad and coleslaw) and you will have yourself a little party on your balcony.

What we loved about staying at the pension: they had a full kitchenette in each room, plus hot water kettles, microwaves, rice cookers, a refrigerator and freezer and LOTS of towels. There was also a little ‘mart’ inside the compound that offered a range of complimentary items like coffee, teas, salt, pepper, cooking oil, new and old DVDs to borrow for free, board games and free fruit. Want ice cream or snacks? Well they sold those, available at any time of the day and night!

To conclude, if you are planning your next trip, consider staying at a pension. There are many that are listed on hotels.com, bookings.com and even TripAdvisor. Do some research, check out some reviews on Naver (if you have a Korean friend that can help you navigate through the website) and stay at a pension in South Korea!

Art in Mono Poly PensionWe had Korean friends help us book Art in Mono Poly, by going to www.monopolys.co.kr - Most of the website is in English, so you can browse all of the rooms online before asking someone to help you book it.

Jeolla-do is located in the southwestern part of the peninsula. Jeolla-do is known as Korea’s breadbasket and is bountiful in traditional cultural heritage and historical sites. Jeolla-do was named after the initial syllables of its two major cities: Jeonju in Jeollabuk-do and Naju in Jeollanam-do. “Jeon” plus “Na,” when connected, is pronounced “Jeolla.”

Jeolla-do Food The region benefits from being home to the Seomjingang River and the Yeongsangang River. Thanks to the two rivers, Jeolla-do has plenty of water and fertile soil. Also, Jeolla-do’s natural geography has produced abundant crops and harvests, earning the region’s capital the title of “City of Food.” Generally, barley, highland vegetables and ginseng were popular in the mountainous areas while fruit, sweet potatoes, chickens and dairy products were successful in the lowlands.

Daetongbap (대통밥): rice steamed in bambooIt has long been believed that well-prepared food is as efficient as medicine. Daetongbap is a bowl of rice and other grains steamed in a large bamboo pot. It is loved for its fresh taste, for the fragrant smell of bamboo and for its nutritional value. The rice is usually served with a variety of side dishes that show off the culinary skills of the province.

Euneogu (은어구이): grilled sweetfishEuneogui, a dish of grilled sweetfish, comes from Gokseong along the banks of the Seomjingang River. Every spring and summer, when the sweetfish are in season, the nearby Seomjingang River becomes a silvery ocean with millions of them swimming upstream to spawn. One of the most popular recipes calls for grilling the fish, after gutting it, and filling it with crushed garlic, chilies, ginger, pepper and sesame. Aejeojjim (애저찜): steamed baby porkThere is a sad story connected to aejeojjim, or steamed baby pork, the local delicacy of Jinan in Jeollabuk-do. In the past, when Korea was in desperate poverty, pigs were easy to feed and their reproduction rate was high, so they were plentiful. Sometimes babies were born dead, or were crushed by the mother during feeding. Their remains were steamed to be eaten in this dish. The dish is rarely found these days, only in a few areas of Jinan. Baekhapjuk (백합죽): rice porridge with clamsThe baekhap clam can be cooked in versatile ways. It can be boiled, steamed, grilled or even eaten raw. In any recipe, they provide an amazing taste. The problem is that this species of clam is rare and only a relatively small amount can be harvested each season. The porridge is ready for eating when the clam and rice are boiled and it is then spiced up with sesame oil and salt. Baekhap clam porridge has now become one of Buan’s representative foods. Chueotang (추어탕): loach fish in hot bean paste soup Namwon-style chueotang is known for being spiced up with vegetables from the highlands of Jirisan Mountain and regional spicy peppers. Namwon is proud of its local version of chueotang and prohibits loach raised elsewhere from coming into the region. The Namwon loach can be caught in the moderate temperatures found in the upper reaches of the Seomjingang River and it is known for its high quality flesh that is not-too-hard and not-too-soft.
