TOP STORIES

During the American Revolution, many important political discussions took place in the inns and taverns of Philadelphia, in-cluding the founding of the Marine Corps. A committee of the Continental Congress met at Tun Tavern to draft a resolution call-ing for two battalions of Marines able to fight for independence at sea and on shore.

The resolution was approved on 10 No-vember 1775, officially forming the Conti-nental Marines. As the first order of business, Samuel Nicholas became Commandant of the newly formed Marines. Tun Tavern’s own-er and popular patriot, Robert Mullan, be-came his first captain and recruiter. They began gathering support and were ready for action by early 1776. Each year, the Marine Corps marks 10 November with a celebration of the brave spirit which compelled these men and thousands since to defend our country as United States Marines.

Fellow Retirees,

Please allow me to introduce myself; my name is Vonda Jones and I am the new Retired Activities Coordinator, Tri-Command South Carolina. I would be remise if I didn’t first say Art Foster did an outstanding job in this position and I hope when you see him around you will thank him for his years of dedicated service.

I am a retired first sergeant with 23 years experience in the Marine Corps and have been in the Beaufort area for the past seven years. The contractor for whom I work is a retired Air Force Colonel.

The Retired Activities Office is a focal point for conducting all official retiree activities maintaining an empathetic counseling program that provides the most current and accurate information regarding retiree benefits and entitlements. This information is disseminated to retirees through the Happenings, the retiree portion of the MCCS website, www.mccs-sc.com/RAO, and various mailings of importance from this office. In addition, my goal is to be the link between the retirees, local military communities and other government and non-government agencies that provide assistance to retirees and their family members.

In closing, I want to continue to provide the high quality service and timely information to which you are accustomed. Please contact me if there is anything that should be brought to my attention because it is important to you or someone you know. Please let me know if there are any time sensitive ongoing activities which I should be made aware. In addition, if you have any ideas or input for the Retired Activities Office, please feel free to call me at 843-228-6222 or e-mail at [email protected].

As your new Retired Activities Coordinator I look forward to hearing from you and meeting with you at sometime in the near future.

Sincerely, Vonda Jones, Retired Activities Coordinator 843-228-6222 | [email protected]

What is a stand down?

In times of war, exhausted combat units requiring time to rest and recover were removed from the battlefields to a place of relative security and safety. To-day, Stand Down refers to community-based intervention programs designed to help the nation’s estimated 200,000 homeless veterans “combat” life on the streets. A hand up, not a handout phi-losophy of Stand Down is carried out through the work of thousands of vol-unteers and numerous organizations throughout the nation.

On 5 November 2010 from 0700-1400, Health Care for Homeless Veterans and the Compensated Work Therapy Program, which includes all of the pro-grams geared to assisting Veterans who

have lost housing or are at risk of los-ing housing, will hold our annual Stand Down. Through a grant from DOL we will be providing food, clothing, and hy-giene items. We could use your help distributing these items. But, more im-portantly, we can use your help to let these veterans know that we appreciate them and their service. Please encour-age those who have lost housing or are at risk of losing housing to participate in this event. Providers of services from the Department of Veteran Affairs both VHA and VBA will be available to as-sist Veterans as will a large number of providers of services from the commu-nity. For more information contact Dee Albritton at 803-343-2577 or visit the website www.fastforwardctc.com.

5NOVEMBER 2010 MCCS HAPPENINGS

More than 18 million people in the U.S. have diabetes. A third of them don’t even know it. Each year more than a million Americans find out they have it. Diabe-tes is the main cause of blindness, kid-ney failure, and the necessity of arm and leg amputation. People with diabetes are also more likely to get heart disease. Di-abetes happens when your body either can’t make or can’t use insulin. (Insulin is a hormone that helps turn the food you eat into energy.) Diabetes develops over time. You can’t catch diabetes, and you can’t give it to someone. Here are some basics about diabetes and how to learn if you are at risk.

signs of diabetes:• Feeling very hungry or thirsty• Losing weight for no reason

• Feeling very tired• Being easily irritated• Urinating very often,

especially at night• Trouble seeing or blurry vision

There are two Types of diabetes, Type 1 and Type 2. Most people with diabetes have Type 2.

type 2 diabetesType 2 diabetes strikes mostly over-weight and inactive adults age 40 and older. It develops over years, often with-out you or your doctor knowing it.

Weight loss, diet, and exercise help con-trol Type 2 diabetes. You may also need medicine or insulin shots. Symptoms in-clude those from above plus:

• Tingling or numbness in hands or feet• Skin, gum, or bladder infections that

happen often or keep coming back• Unusual drowsiness• Cuts or bruises that are slow to heal

type 1 diabetesOnly 5 to 10 percent of people with dia-betes have Type 1. It appears suddenly in children and young adults and wors-ens quickly. For these people, the body makes little or no insulin, so they must take insulin shots every day and care-fully control their diets. The exact cause of Type 1 diabetes is not known. Life-style changes can prevent or delay dia-betes. Eat a healthy diet that is lower in fat and unnecessary calories to maintain a healthy weight and exercise regularly.

recipemultigrain energy barsFinding convenience foods that taste great and are genuinelynutritious is a real challenge. Many “health bars” are made with cornsyrup and some even contain trans fat. Others are chalky or have toomuch sugar. There just aren’t many options available that are minimallyprocessed, rich in nutrients and taste good. Try the below homemade barfor on the go or as a great snack after a workout. Source: wholegraingourmet.com

ingredients:1/4 cup slivered almonds1/4 cup toasted sesame seeds1/4 cup dried tart cherries1/4 cup dried currants1/4 cup dried blueberries1/4 cup dried apricots1/2 cup 7-grain cereal (Bob’s Red Mill)2 cups rolled oats1/2 cup honey1/4 tsp kosher salt1 cup organic peanut butter1 tsp vanilla extract

preparation:Toast the oats and almonds under a low broiler, allowing them to begin to turn a light golden brown before re-moving. Set aside to cool. Combine

apricots, cherries, currants, andblueberries in a food processor.Pulse to mince, being careful not to allow it to paste up. Add minced dried fruit, oats, almonds, and sesame seeds to a large bowl and mix well. I use my hands to gently roll the mixture, getting the dried fruit to seperate from itself and blend with the oats. Bring 1/2 cup of wa-ter to a boil in a small sauce pan. Add the 7-grain cereal, stir thoroughly, and remove from heat. Allow it to rest in the pan for 2 minutes. Add peanut butter, honey, salt, and vanilla to the pan and return to a medium low heat, stiring fre-quently, for about 7 minutes. You want the mixture warmed througout and well combined. The mixture will begin to glis-ten and roll off the sides as you stir it. Do not overheat the mixture as you will need to be able to handle it. Add the peanut butter mixture to the oat mixture and

combine thoroughly. Work it with your hands to combine well. Firmly press the mixture into a 8x8 glass baking dish. Don’t be shy about it. You want to com-press it into the bottom of the dish so that the top becomes level. I use a flat metal spatula. Allow the dish to rest at room temperature for two hours or lon-ger. The longer you wait, the firmer the bars will be when you cut them. Cut into bars and enjoy. The bars should be firm enough to retain shape, but will give to pressure.

Makes 12 bars

Great American Smokeout18 November 2010

The American Cancer Society holds the Great American Smokeout every year on the third Thursday in November. This year the Great American Smokeoout will take place on 18 November 2010. The purpose of the event is to set aside a day to help smokers quit smoking and quit using tobacco products for at least one day with the hope that they will quit

completely. Not only does the event challenge people to stop using tobacco, it helps raise awareness about the dangers of smoking and the many effective ways available to quit smoking permanently. Research shows that smokers are most successful in kicking the habit when they have a means of support, such as nicotine replacement products, counseling,

prescription medicine to lessen cravings, guide books and the encouragement of friends and family members.

Did you know that:20 minutes after quitting: Your heart rate and blood pressure drops.

12 hours after quitting: The carbon monoxide level in your blood drops to normal.2 weeks to 3 months after quitting: Your circulation improves and your lung function increases.

1 to 9 months after quitting: Coughing and shortness of breath decreases; cilia regain normal function in the lungs, increasing the ability to handle mucus, clean the lungs, and reduce the risk of infection.

1 year after quitting: Your excess risk of coronary heart disease is half that of a smoker’s.5 years after quitting: Your stroke risk is reduced to that of a nonsmoker 5 to 15 years after quitting.

10 years after quitting: The lung cancer death rate is about half that of a continuing smoker’s.The risk of cancer of the mouth, throat, esophagus, bladder, cervix, and pancreas decrease.

15 years after quitting: The risk of coronary heart disease is that of a non-smoker’s.(US Surgeon General’s Report, 1990, p.vi)

The key to becoming a non-smoker is to match your smoking habits with a non-smoking method that works for you. You can get help designing your own per-sonal quit plan by taking the American Cancer Society’s Stop Smoking Quiz at www.cancer.org. Telephone quit lines and support groups are other ways to increase your chances for success. Lo-cal classes are offered through Beaufort Naval Hospital and Semper Fit Health Promotion. Please call 843-228-5344 or 843-228-5486 for more information.

Educational displays will be provided on 8 November from 1100-1300 at the MCAS Fitness Center, 9 November at the MCRD Main Exchange from 1100-1300 and 18 November at the Com-missary from 1100-1300. Informa-tion and giveaways will be provided.

13NOVEMBER 2010 MCCS HAPPENINGS

LIBRARY

NOVEMBER 2010 MCCS HAPPENINGS

LIBRARYreading to Children Taken from reachoutandread.org

Why is reading aloud to young children so important?

• Children who are read to during the first years of life are more likely to learn to read on schedule.

• Reading aloud to young children is not only one of the best activities to stimu-late language and cognitive skills, but it also builds motivation, curiosity, and memory.

• Early language skills, the foundation for reading ability and school readiness, are based primarily on language expo-sure - resulting from parents and other adults talking to young children.

• The nurturing and one-on-one atten-tion from parents during reading aloud encourages children to form a positive association with books and reading later in life.

• Reading aloud is a proven technique to help children cope during times of stress or tragedy.

• Reading difficulty contributes to school failure, which increases the risk of ab-senteeism, leaving school, juvenile de-linquency, substance abuse, and teen-age pregnancy - all of which perpetuate the cycles of poverty and dependency.

Reading Tips for Parents and Caregivers:

• Make reading part of every day. Read at bedtime or on the bus.

• Have fun. Children who love books learn to read. Books can be part of spe-cial time with your child.

• A few minutes are okay. Young children can only sit for a few minutes for a story, but as they grow, they will sit longer.

• Talk about the pictures. You do not have to read the book to tell a story.

• Let your child turn the pages. Babies need board books and help to turn

pages, but your 3-year-old can do it alone.

• Show your child the

cover page.

Explain what the story is about.• Show your child the words. Run your

finger along the words as you read them.

• Silly sounds are fun to make. Grab an animal book and practice making ani-mal noises together.

• Choose books that your child can relate to. Select books that relate to what is happening in your child’s world - start-ing preschool, going to the dentist, getting a new pet, or moving to a new home.

• Make the story come alive. Create voic-es for the story characters and use your body to tell the story.

• Ask questions about the story. What do think will happen next? What is this?

• Let your child ask questions about the story. Use the story as an opportunity to engage in conversation and to talk about familiar activities and objects.

• Let your child tell the story. Children as young as 3 years old can memo-

rize a story and many children love an opportunity to express their creativity.• Take advantage of your lo-cal library. Sign your child up for a library card and expose him/her to thousands more (free!) children’s books. Come to sto-ry hour or special events.

new Adult titles

“Kings of the Earth” by Jon Clinch. Three brothers lived together on a farm in upstate New York. When Vern, the

eldest, dies in his sleep ques-

tions arise about whether he died of natural causes or was murdered, and if so, which brother was guilty. The story is told in alter-nating voices that span a generation and explores the complexities of human relation-ships and the realities of rural life.

“The Red Queen” by Philippa Gregory. Margaret Beaufort is plotting to win the throne of England for her family. After send-ing her son, heir to the throne, out of the country for his safety, she feigns loyalty to King Richard III while making plans for a battle between the houses of York and Lan-caster. When she is successful, it launches the greatest dynasty England will ever know: The Tudors. ‘Cousins’ War,’ Bk. 2.

“The Left Hand of God” by Paul Hoffman. Hoffman takes readers to the Redeemer Sanctuary, the stronghold of a secretive sect of warrior monks where Thomas Cale, 16, has lived from early childhood as a cap-tive. The Sanctuary has many forbidden doorways, and one day, Cale decides to open one. It changes his life. He is destined to save the world or destroy it. First book in trilogy.

The above list is a small sample of the new titles available at your libraries. Your library now has many of the new young adult titles that were selected from the Beaufort area middle and high school reading list. Come check them out for your reading assign-ments.

Bookworm’s recommendationBy Samantha Bowersox

“City of Bones” by Cassandra Clare (book 1 in The Mortal Instruments series) “City of Bones” begins as main characters Clary Fray and Simon Lewis are at a club. While there, Clary is witness to a murder, only to discover that no one else saw what happened. She is the only one able to see the ‘murderers’, three teenagers with strange weapons. They are just as surprised that she can see them, revealing themselves as Jace, Alec, and Isabelle who are all ‘Shadowhunters’, members of a group dedicated to fighting demons. Shortly afterwards, Clary’s apartment is attacked by a demon and her mother vanishes. Clary sets out on a quest to find her mother.
