MILITARY SPACE-AVAILABLE TRAVELSpace Available Flight, more commonly referred to as Space-A travel or military hops, is a privilege aorded to military service members, their families, and service retirees. The system accommodates these passengers by letting them ll seats on Air Force air transport ights that would otherwise be left empty. The seats are made available on a space-available basis. Unused seats on DoD owned or controlled aircraft are made available once all the space required (duty) passengers and cargo have been accommodated.

Space-A travelers may sign up for travel 60 days in advance of the desired travel date. Passengers are categorized by priority of travel and are processed in priority order by the sign-in time. For leisure travel, Military Retirees are placed in category VI, which is a rather low priority

There is no charge for personnel traveling in government owned aircraft. However, if a Space-A ight is made on a commercial contract carrier, a fee will be assessed. The fee is variable (approximately $15-30) depending on the port. There is also a fee for meals served aboard military aircraft.

Space required passengers or cargo may require the removal of Space-A passengers at any point. If removed en route, you may re-register with your original date and time of registration. Passenger Service will assign a new date and time to any country or destination you change or add on your application. Always be prepared to purchase onward or return commercial transportation, meals, and lodging. Remember Space-A seats are normally identied as early as 2-3 hours and late as 30 minutes prior to departure. It is recommended you check with the passenger service center for the space available show time for the ight you wish to take.

TIPS FOR TRAVELING SPACE-A

• Plan, be flexible, be patient.

• If possible, travel at off-peak Space-A travel periods. Historically, February-March and October-November are low travel periods.

• Be as flexible as possible in choosing a destination.

• There is a head tax on CONUS outbound or federal inspection fee on CONUS inbound international commercial charters.

• Space-A is just that-space that is available after all mission requirements are fulfilled. Military aircraft are subject at all time, first and foremost, to D0D mission response.

For registration information, travel categories, and more…go to http://www.baseops.net/spaceatravel or contact the Charleston Air Force Base Operations @ (843) 963-3083/3048.

UNITED THROUGH READING

MCAS Library is excited to announce a partnership with United Through Reading. This is a non-prot organization and their mission is to unite military families facing physical separation by facilitating the bonding experience of reading aloud together.

One of the most dicult things a child can experience is having a parent deployed to a war zone for an indeterminate period of time. Our Military Program helps ease the stress of separation for military families by having deployed parents read children’s books aloud via DVD for their child to watch at home.

Our vision is that all children will feel the security of caring family relationships and develop a love of reading through the read aloud experience.

United Through Reading is the nation’s rst nonprot to promote the read-aloud experience for separated military families. United Through Reading oers deployed parents the opportunity to be video-recorded reading storybooks to their children which eases the stress of separation, maintains positive emotional connections and cultivates a love of reading. At nearly 200 recording locations worldwide, Marines, Soldiers and Sailors, National Guard, Reservists and Airmen, can read to their children from units on ships, in tents in Afghanistan, on bases and installations around the world and at 70 USO centers worldwide. Over one and a half million military parents, spouses and children have beneted from the program since its inception.

Please call the AS Library to take advantage of this service. You may bring a book of your choice or select one of our titles to read to your child.

Media is everywhere today in the form of television, computers, tablets, and smart phones. The temptation to rely on media, especially television, to entertain children is incredible, but all that tube time might do more harm than good. How much television time are we talking about these days? Here some shocking statistics on the amount of television watched by today’s children:

• 90% of parents reported that their children under 2 years of age watch some form of electronic media. On average, they viewed 1-2 hours of television per day.

• Today’s children (all ages) are spending an average of seven hours a day on entertainment media, including televisions, computers, phones and other electronic devices.

• Children two to five years old spend an average of thirty-two hours a week in front of a TV screen. So what’s the harm with all that television and media exposure?

• Studies have shown that excessive media use can lead to reduced attention, difficulty in school, eating and sleeping disorders, and obesity.

• Children who watch the most television typically have the lowest grades in school.

• Television viewing near bedtime can cause poor sleep habits which can adversely affect mood, behavior, and learning.

How can you entertain your child when television isn’t on? Here are a few easy ideas:

• Once a child is old enough to read, encourage daily reading time to occupy

your children. Reading is a great way to fill up a boring road trip as well.

• Kids should spend time on outdoor play, reading, hobbies and using their imaginations in free play.

• Encourage your children to do artistic activities such as coloring, painting and Play-do.

• Puzzles and building block sets are also great activities that encourage imagination and problem solving.

Web-based TA Applications for MarinesWeb-based military tuition assistance (TA) applications will save time and reduce running around for our Marines. This process will save your time, which is precious. Marines will ll out their TA applications from their work centers via an on-line portal, which will then notify command designated ocers to review and endorse the applications, also online, which will then notify the education oce personnel to process the tuition assistance, without the Marine having to travel from place to place and person to person to process

paper-based forms. First time TA users will still need to report to the education oce for College 101 and initial counseling. While this new system will not reduce our requirements for processing and counseling (not to mention testing, giving classes, briefs, etc), it will save Marine working hours and streamline the process at the units. Contact your Education Oce for process directions.
