RED RIBBON MONTH

October is Red Ribbon Month

“Red Ribbon” is one of the oldest and larg-est national drug prevention campaigns in existence. It is an opportunity to renew our commitment to a healthy and drug-free life-style and to show our dedication to educa-tion and prevention efforts in our schools and community with the ultimate goal being the creation of a drug-free America.

Red Ribbon Month also commemorates the ultimate sacrifice made by DEA Spe-cial Agent and former Marine Enrique “Kiki” Camarena, who died at the hands of drug traffickers in Mexico while fighting the bat-tle against illegal drugs to keep our country and children safe.

Our community celebrates Red Ribbon Month in many ways. Marine and Fam-ily Services’ Drug Demand Reduction is a program which reduces substance use through education and awareness throughout the Tri-Command. During the month of October, DDR will be working to incorporate the themes of Red Ribbon Month with other MCCS events and ac-tivities. The following are just a few events which will help to reinforce the Red Ribbon themes. Please be on the look out for more events throughout the month of October.

ART FOSTER | MCAS BEAUFORT BLDG 703 | 228-6222Tricare Retired Reserve (Gray Area) Update

The Department of Defense on 6 AUG 2010, through its Tricare Management Activity (TMA), published the long awaited premium rates for the new Tricare coverage available to Gray Area retirees: retired members of the Reserve under the age of 60 who are eligible to collect Reserve retirement pay at age 60. The monthly premium rates for members only will be $388.31 in 2010 and $408.01 in 2011. However, the monthly rate for member and family will be $976.41 in 2010 and $1,020.60 in 2011. These premium rates are significantly greater than anticipated. The new program will bear the name

Tricare Retired Reserve (TRR), but it is not to be confused with the full Tricare benefit eligible retired Reserve members will receive at age 60, which is provided at no cost.

Tricare User Fee Update

On 9 AUG, Defense Secretary Robert Gates held a press conference to announce a series of initiatives to cut defense spending and to state his intent to increase Tricare fees. Asked by a reporter when it would be time to control rising health care costs, either through Tricare premium increases or reducing plan coverage, Secretary Gates said, “Yesterday.” Gates went

on to say, “There are no sacred cows, and health care cannot be excepted.” For the past several months Gates has been working on a plan to cut $100 billion in defense spending over the next five years. While there are many aspects of his plan that deserve close review, it is clear that shifting the cost of earned healthcare benefits from DoD to the retiree is a key component of the Secretary’s plan.

In order to keep you up on military retiree news, some important articles will be posted on http://mccs-sc.com. Select “Retired Activities” on the top bar; Retiree News is listed in the right column.

Balsamic Chickenwith Roasted Tomatoes

The juices escaping from the roasting tomatoes combine with the honey and olive oil to make a syrupy glaze to coat the tomatoes and the chicken.

Prep: 5 minutes; Cook: 12 minutes

Ingredients• 1 pint grape tomatoes• 1 tablespoon honey• 1 1/2 teaspoons olive oil• 1/2 teaspoon salt, divided• 4 (6-ounce) skinless, boneless chicken

breast halves• 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper• Cooking spray• Balsamic vinaigrette salad spritzer

2. Combine first 3 ingredients in a small bowl; place tomato mixture on a foil-lined jelly-roll pan. Bake at 450° for 12 minutes or until tomato skins burst and begin to wrinkle, stirring once. Transfer tomatoes to a bowl, scraping juices into bowl. Stir 1/4 teaspoon salt into tomato mixture.

3. Place each chicken breast half between 2 sheets of heavy-duty plastic wrap; pound to 1/4-inch thickness using a meat mallet or small heavy skillet. Sprinkle chicken evenly with 1/4 teaspoon salt and pepper.

Webster University

Graduate Degrees - Fall II ‘10 term dates are 23 October - 17 December

HM3 Troy Smith is a Physical Thera-py Tech in sports medicine at MCRD and a devoted bodybuilder. He is half-way through his MA in Management and Leadership at Webster Univer-sity which he chose when a cooking class was unavailable locally. With a staff of six, his primary job is to “bring injured recruits back to normal.” He says he “takes something back to work from class on a daily basis.” He also praised the Webster program for its “flexibility” and the fact that live in-structors provide instruction in a tra-ditional format.” If you’re interested in more information, please call Webster University at 524-1851.

New Military Spouse Career Advancement Account (MyCAA)

Career advancement accounts, My-CAA, provide military spouses with op-portunities to pursue portable careers in high-demand, high-growth occupa-tions. The current program began as a demonstration project with the De-partment of Labor in January 2008 at 18 locations in eight states. Program eligibility was limited to the spouses of active duty servicemembers in the ju-nior ranks, and accounts awarded un-der the demonstration were targeted to nationally-identified high-demand, high-growth industry sectors that provide the greatest opportunity for career portability. Over time, the pro-gram was expanded to include military spouses of all pay grades and all pro-grams of study. The changes announced reflect a re-turn to the original intent of the pro-gram, to assist spouses of service-members in the pay grades of E-1 to E-5, W1-W2, and 01-02 to achieve portable careers. The changes also align the program with responsible fis-cal planning by the Defense Depart-ment. We believe the new program guidelines will help sustain the pro-gram.

Under the new guidelines, education counselors will work with all military spouses to help develop career and education goals and plans and assist them in navigating all available fed-eral education benefits toward these goals.

New Program Guidelines:

• New MyCAA Launch Date: 25 Oc-tober 2010 at 0800 (EDT)

• Eligible Participants: Spouses of E1-E5, W1-W2, and O1-O2

• DoD-funded assistance: Up to $4,000, vice $6,000 under previ-ous program

• Annual Cap: $2,000 per spouse,

New Adult Titles

“Spider Bones” by Kathy Reichs. Bren-nan is called to the scene of a drowning for a man who had been declared legally dead 40 years earlier--a former Vietnam vet. While trying to analyze the remains, a second set of remains turns up with the first victim’s dog tags, and a body connected to a suspected shark attack washes ashore. Could the victims be connected? Reichs is the best-selling author and producer of the hit TV series Bones featuring Temperance Brennan.

“Broken” by Karen Slaughter. Surround-ing Chief Tolliver’s death, Officer Adams and Special Agent Trent are in Grant Coun-ty investigating a murder that’s been staged to look like a suicide. Although a suicide note has been found, the young man’s body shows signs of a struggle after being pulled from the lake. They’ll soon be pushed to the breaking point in trying to solve this case.

“Days of Grace” by Catherine Hall. At 12, Nora was sent as an evacuee from London during WWII to live with a family in the Eng-lish countryside. She loved her surrogate family-- especially Grace, 12. Over the next few years she and Grace become as close as sisters which results in Nora learning a secret that will forever haunt her for the next fifty years. In Hall’s debut novel of passion and repression, be careful what you say and don’t give away any clues that the enemy mustn’t know.

The above list is a small sample of the new titles available at your libraries. Your library now has many of the new young adult titles that were selected from the Beaufort area middle and high school reading list. Come check them out for your reading assign-ments.

Policy Changes

The check out policy on the Air Station and Parris Island libraries has changed. Pa-trons may now select an unlimited number of books. The check out time has changed from two weeks to three weeks. If an item is overdue for longer than five days the patron must bring it in to be renewed. There is now only one renewal date for all items.

The second policy to change concerns lost or damaged books. Patrons are now asked to search for the title in a site such as Amazon, purchase the book, pay for it with their credit card and include our ship-ping address. At this time the account will be cleared.

DVDs at the Library

Please check out the huge new collection of DVDs at the libraries. We have in-creased the number of DVDs and VHS that may be checked out from 3 to 10. Patrons may now keep loaned items 3 weeks rather than 1! Come by and see what new movies we have.

Did You Know?

Do you know what an ILL is? It stands for Inter Loan Library. This program allows the library to have access to additional books found throughout Marine Corp Libraries. If either Air Station or Parris Island doesn’t have a specific title then we can request it from another base library and have it shipped. Please ask at the circulation desk for needed titles.

Bookworm’s RecommendationBy Samanta Bowersox

October’s Pick:“A Dog’s Purpose” by W. Bruce Cameron

A Dog’s Purpose is written from a dog’s point of view. It is the story of a dog that died at a young age and was reborn three times. The first time he is reincarnat-ed he is a male gold-en retriever puppy named Bailey who is adopted by an eight year old boy. They grow up together and have many adventures until the boy goes off to college. Eventually, Bailey passes away and is reborn as a female German shepherd puppy named Ellie who ends up being ad-opted by a police officer and trained to be a search-and-rescue dog. After the police of-ficer is injured while on duty, Ellie is given to a new member of the search-and-rescue team. Many years later, Ellie dies of old age. The third and last time the dog is reborn, it is as a Labrador puppy named Buddy. When Buddy is mistreated, he runs away and is reunited with the boy who owned him in a previous life.
