COVER STORIES

HdtV Winner Announced

Congratulations to Corporal Hernandez from H&HS, who is a supply clerk at the TMO office. He is the winner of a 52” Sharp AQUOS HDTV. Corporal Hernandez partici-pated in a survey from MCCS which polled the interests and opinons of the Tri-Com-mand at the Officers’ Club aboard MCAS

Beaufort. The survey was avaliable through the MCCS website, MCCS Facebook page, and at the Officers’ Club from 1 July to 31 July. At the close of the survey, respondents eligible for the contest were added to a da-tabase and Corporal Hernandez was ran-domly selected as the winner of a 52” HDTV.

Chris Alexandre, the Food and Beverage

Manager of the Officers’ Club, presented Corporal Hernandez with the TV in the TMO warehouse Tuesday, 10 August. With his unsuspecting unit looking on, Corporal Hernandez was pulled out of formation to assist Alexandre in unloading his truck. Un-beknownst to Corporal Hernandez, or the at-tentive crowd, the truck contained his grand prize HDTV.

“The suggestions provided by Corporal Hernandez, and all suggestions collected through the survey, will be taken into con-sideration. Steps will be taken to make the changes needed to provide the Tri-Com-mand a dining experience catered to the desires and ideas of our patrons,” said Alex-andre.

To view a video and the photos from the surprise giveaway, please visit the Food and Beverage portion of the MCCS web site or MCCS South Carolina’s Facebook page (Facebook.com/mccs.sc or MCCS-SC.com).

Cholesterol Awareness MonthWhat it is and what to do about it

Managing high cholesterol is essential for a healthy heart. All you have to do is under-stand the problem, then take steps to cor-rect it.

Why Is Cholesterol Important?

Your blood cholesterol level has a lot to do with your chances of getting heart disease. In fact, the higher your blood cholesterol level, the greater your risk for developing heart disease or having a heart attack. Heart disease is the number one killer of women and men in the United States. Each year, more than a million Americans have heart attacks, and about a half million people die from heart disease.

How Does Cholesterol Cause Heart Disease?

When there is too much cholesterol (a fat-like substance) in your blood, it builds up in the walls of your arteries. Over time, this buildup causes “hardening of the arteries” so that arteries become narrowed and blood flow to the heart is slowed down or blocked. The blood carries oxygen to the heart, and if enough blood and oxygen cannot reach your heart, you may suffer chest pain. If the blood supply to a portion of the heart is com-pletely cut off by a blockage, the result is a heart attack. High blood cholesterol itself does not cause symptoms, so many people are unaware that their cholesterol level is too high. It is important to find out what your cholesterol numbers are because lowering cholesterol levels that are too high lessens the risk for developing heart disease and re-duces the chance of a heart attack or dying

of heart disease, even if you already have it. Cholesterol lowering is important for every-one– younger, middle age, and older adults; women and men; and people with or without heart disease.

What Do Your Cholesterol Numbers Mean?

Everyone age 20 and older should have their cholesterol measured at least once ev-ery 5 years. It is best to have a blood test called a “lipoprotein profile” to find out your cholesterol numbers. This blood test is done after a 9 to 12 hour fast and gives informa-tion about your:

• Total cholesterol• LDL (bad) cholesterol – the main source

of cholesterol buildup and blockage in the arteries

• HDL (good) cholesterol – helps keep cho-lesterol from building up in the arteries

• Triglycerides – another form of fat in your blood

What Affects Cholesterol Levels?

A variety of things can affect cholesterol lev-els. These are things you can do something about:

• Diet. Saturated fat and cholesterol in the food you eat make your blood cho-lesterol level go up. Saturated fat is the main culprit, but cholesterol in foods also matters. Reducing the amount of saturated fat and cholesterol in your diet helps lower your blood cholesterol level.

• Weight. Being overweight is a risk fac-tor for heart disease. It also tends to in-crease your cholesterol. Losing weight can help lower your LDL and total cho-lesterol levels, as well as raise your HDL and lower your triglyceride levels.

• Physical Activity. Not being physically active is a risk factor for heart disease. Regular physical activity can help lower LDL (bad) cholesterol and raise HDL (good) cholesterol levels. It also helps you lose weight. You should try to be physically active for 30 minutes on most, if not all, days.

Things you cannot do anything about also can affect cholesterol levels. These include:

• Age and Gender. As women and men get older, their cholesterol levels rise. Before the age of menopause, women have low-er total cholesterol levels than men of the same age. After the age of menopause, women’s LDL levels tend to rise.

• Heredity. Your genes partly deter-mine how much cholesterol your body makes. High blood cholesterol can run in families.

For more information about lowering cho-lesterol and lowering your risk for heart dis-ease, write to the NHLBI Health Information Center, P.O. Box 30105, Bethesda, MD, 20824-0105 or call 301-592-8573.

Shrimp Pad Thai

Ingredients• 8 ounces uncooked spaghetti• 1/4 cup low-sodium teriyaki sauce• 2 tablespoons hot water• 3 tablespoons creamy peanut butter• 1/4 teaspoon Sriracha (hot chile sauce,

such as Huy Fong)• 2 teaspoons dark sesame oil• 1 teaspoon bottled minced garlic• 1 pound peeled and deveined large

shrimp• 4 cups snow peas• 1/3 cup chopped fresh cilantro• 1/3 cup chopped dry-roasted peanuts• 5 lime wedges

Yield• 5 servings (serving size: about 1 1/2 cups

pad thai, about 1 tablespoon cilantro, about 1 tablespoon peanuts, and 1 lime wedge)

The name may sound exotic, but this dish is pretty much entirely made from common pantry items. If you have spaghetti, peanut butter, and teriyaki sauce on hand, you’re good to go - the veggies and shrimp can be swapped out for any vegetable and protein.

PreparationCook pasta according to package directions, omitting salt and fat; drain and set aside. Combine teriyaki sauce, hot water, peanut butter, and Sriracha, stirring with a whisk. Heat the sesame oil in a large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Add minced garlic, and sauté 1 minute. Add shrimp; sauté for 2 minutes or until shrimp are almost done. Add teriyaki sauce mixture, and cook for 2 minutes or until sauce thickens. Add pasta and snow peas; cook for 2 minutes or until thoroughly heated, stirring well. Sprinkle with cilantro and peanuts. Serve with lime wedges.

ART FOSTER | MCAS BEAUFORT BLDG 703 | 228-6222VA Copay Update

On 9 June, the VA announced that veterans who generally have higher income and no service-connected disabilities, referred to as Priority Groups 7 and 8 veterans, will now pay an additional $1 for each 30-day supply of outpatient medications. Taking effect on 1 July, the increase from $8 to $9 is the first change in VA medication copay since 1 January 2006. Veterans in Priority groups 2-6 will have no increase in their copay. When asked why this increase was necessary the VA replied that the CPI for medication was increasing at a higher rate than the rest of the economy and this increase was deemed necessary. The prices will hold steady for the next 18 months and will again be looked at in January 2012.

Space “A” travel Policy

A bill introduced by Rep. Don Young (R-AK) on 26 May would make space-available travel on military flights easier for retired reserve component members and their family members. H.R.5404 would make travel available to them on the same basis as it is now for retired members of the active component. Currently, restrictions are greater for reserve component retirees and their families. In a press release, Young said, “Currently if a Guardsman or Reservist retires before the age of 60, their dependents cannot fly space available on military aircraft. With a large number of Guardsmen and Reservists serving in Iraq and Afghanistan, this is a good way to show our support and appreciation for the men and women of our armed forces

and the families that support them and support this country with all they have.” The bill has been referred to the House Committee on Armed Services.

VA Presumptive Vn Vet diseases Update 09

The President signed the War Supplemental 29 July. In that bill is the $13.4 billion in funding for the three newly designated presumptive diseases related to Agent Orange exposure. What does this mean for veterans who have already filed and those waiting to file on these conditions? The money is now in place and the authorization to spend it needs to be completed. The House overwhelmingly passed the VA/Military Construction Authorization bill earlier this week and now the Senate must do the same. The House version authorizes the money for these new conditions. All of this shows progress, but the main roadblock now is the 60 day hold placed on spending any of the money by Sen. Webb (D-VA) who wishes to take a look at the science and reasons behind the decision to connect these three potentially very expensive, new conditions to service in Vietnam. On 23 September, the Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee has scheduled a hearing to examine the reasons and evidence used by Secretary Shinseki to add these three conditions to the list of presumptive diseases related to Agent Orange exposure. NAUS has heard reports that the VA may publish the final rules as early as next week. This could mean that the VA might begin payments for treatment sometime in October, shortly after the September hearing. The payments would be retroactive to the date of the original claim or death of veteran if survivors are filing the claim.

tricare Online

Tricare Online (www.tricareonline.com) is a website that continues to evolve

as new tools emerge that are of benefit to its users. At this site registered users have access to their own customized Tricare Online home page. The latest addition to this site is the Tricare Personal Health Record (PHR) available to Military Health System (MHS) Beneficiaries who have a Common Access Card. Those who do not have a CAC can only access this feature from a military installation or a VA based computer. However, retirees can obtain access to their PDR from any computer‘s geographic location if they are registered for myPay at https://myPay.dfas.mil . The myPay logon ID and password are needed to obtain DoD Self-Service Logon capability from Defense Manpower Data Center (DMDC).

Medicare Scams

The Department of Health and Human Services and the Michigan Office of Services to the Aging are receiving reports of Medicare beneficiaries being contacted by phone, mail or in person and asked for personal information in exchange for a $250 Medicare rebate check. These one-time rebates are automatically mailed to Medicare recipients when they reach the Medicare Part D prescription drug coverage gap, also known as the donut hole. Normally, a Medicare recipient will receive their $250 rebate check within 45 days of reaching the $2,830 expenses threshold for prescription drugs during a calendar year. These one-time Medicare rebate checks will be mailed to eligible individuals automatically and if contacted, seniors should not provide their personal information.

A Bookworm’s recommendation By Samantha Bowersox

September’s Pick:“The Dogs of Riga” by Henning Mankell

The Dogs of Riga is the second book in the Kurt Wallander series by Mankell. Un-like the previous book, which takes place in Sweden, Dogs of Riga changes loca-tions between Sweden and post-Soviet Union Latvia. The bodies of two men are found in a drifting lifeboat by a pair of smugglers off the coast of Sweden. After the men are discovered to be from Eastern Europe, a Latvian police officer is called in to identify the two men. After the Latvian returns home, he is murdered. As a re-sult, Wallander travels to Latvia to find out what happened to his former colleague.

new at the Library

“The Search” by Nora Roberts. Fiona, owner of a dog training school, now leads an idyllic life. Several years ago she survived the clutches of a serial killer. Presently in-volved in the training of a local man’s dog,

she becomes romantically involved with the canine’s owner, only to be reminded of her past when a copycat killer emerges from the shadows.

“Shattered” by Karen Robards. Working as a research assistant for District Attorney Scott Buchanan, Lisa Shewmaker makes an astounding discovery while reviewing cold cases at the courthouse. Inside a dusty manila envelope she finds details of a case from 28 years earlier where an entire family went missing. The mother in the photo could be Lisa’s twin and the toddler bears an un-canny resemblance to her. She’s about to learn that the past is never over. It just gets dusty.

“Beachcombers” by Nancy Thayer. When a newcomer to town begins wooing her widowed father, Lily, who has remained in Nantucket with him, calls her sisters to come home. As each struggles with their own personal problems, as they try to de-termine if the woman romancing their father has good intentions. Many changes over the course of the summer.

“Ice Cold” by Tess Gerritsen. Something’s wrong in Kingdom Come, WY. The town’s residents seem to have vanished into thin air. Maura, a vacationing medical examiner, and her traveling companions find them-selves trapped in the deserted town during a storm. The entire scene becomes fright-ening when they discover someone danger-ous and deadly is watching them.

“Eat the cookie…buy the shoes” by Joyce Meyer. The author believes that breaking from regimen is not a sign of weakness and that we need to break our routines now and then.

“The Scent of Rain and Lightening” by Nancy Pickard. Like many towns Rose, Kans., has a shocking secret buried in its past that changes lives when it’s eventu-ally revealed. Jody, an English teacher, who never faced her mysterious past learns that the man convicted of mur-

dering her father has been released from prison. He is returning with his son who is convinced his father was wrongly convicted.

“The Glass Rainbow” by James Lee Burke. Robicheaux returns to Louisiana and becomes entangled in a mystery con-necting a series of murders of seven young women in neighboring Jefferson Davis parish. When their prime suspect turns up dead, the case takes a nasty turn.

“Bringing up Girls” by Dr. James Dobson. Answers to what we should do to shape girls to be the next generation of women through wisdom and encouragement based on a firm foundation of biblical principles.

“The Imperfectionists” by Tom Rach-man. A debut novel set in the backdrop of Rome follows the topsy-turvy lives of the reporters, editors, and executives of an in-ternational English-language newspaper as they struggle to keep it afloat.

“A Mighty Fortress” by David Weber. Cayleb, who is not yet 40, won crushing na-val victories and the hand of the beautiful young Queen Sharleyan of Chisholm. To-gether they have created the Charisian Em-pire, the greatest naval power in the history of Safehold, and have turned Charis into a place of refuge for all who love freedom. When their success and lives are threat-ened by The Church of God Awaiting who wants them killed, they turn to their secret weapon: their adviser, friend, and guardian--the mystic warrior-monk named Merlin Ath-rawes.
