HEART DISEASE

Heart disease is the leading cause of death for men in the United States. Try the following tips to lower your risk of heart disease:

• Don’t smoke and do your best to avoid secondhand smoke.

• Keep your blood pressure below 120/80.

• Watch your cholesterol! A LDL (bad cholesterol) score less than 100 is best.

• Exercise at least 30 minutes most days of the week. If you want to break it up, you can exercise 10 minutes at a time.

• Eat at least 5 servings of fruits and vegetables each day.

• Eat less fat, especially saturated fats and avoid trans fats all together.

• Ask your doctor about taking low-dose aspirin.

• Learn how to manage stress.

• Maintain a healthy weight.

TESTICULAR CANCER

Testicular cancer isn’t very common and usually strikes men be-tween 15 and 34 years old. Doing monthly self-examines can help with early detection. If you are unsure how to complete a self-exam, ask your doctor to show you. See your doctor if your testicles exhibit the following symptoms:

• Have painless swelling

• Have a hard lump, pea-sized or larger

• Feel “heavy”

• Never appear (descend)

Take charge of your health and safety by preventing disease. Hospitals, universities and government agencies have great re-sources to help you along the way. If you are unsure of how to take control over your health or how to implement preventa-tive measures, don’t be afraid to ask your doctor or health care provider.
