Tis the part of a wise man to keep himself

today for tomorrow, and not venture all hiseggs in one basket, or so goes the quotefrom Cervantes novel Don Quixote. Andalmost 400 years later, the sentiment is astrue today as it may have been back then.

The discipline of diversification, in a financial sense, isone of which investors are being increasingly remindedgiven the volatile nature of global investment marketsover the past few years. Furthermore, investors are nowable to access a much wider range of asset classes thanthe traditional choice of equities (shares), fixed interest

securities, property and cash. Demand from increasinglysavvy retail investors has seen the advent of commodities,private equity and other alternative asset classes added totheir armoury.

With the global economy seemingly teetering on thebrink, the adage of having a balanced portfolio has neverbeen as relevant. And if we take a look back at how variousasset classes have fared both before the global banking crisisin 2008 and the period afterwards, its all too clear thatholding a balanced, diversified portfolio is a key factor inachieving your long term investment objectives.

No-one can predict which investment is going to produce

the best returns year after year, but there are two thingswe can be fairly sure of; the best performing investmentin one year can often turn out to be the worst performinginvestment the next year and, by spreading your moneyacross a selection of asset types, countries and sectors,your investments stand a better chance of achieving moreconsistent returns.

During the global banking crisis of 2008, UK equities(measured by the FTSE All Share index) were at thebottom of the league table versus other investments, losing-30% over the calendar year. Yet in 2009, as investorsconfidence buoyed on the back of a more stable economicenvironment, they led the way, reversing all those losses

with a gain of 30% over the following 12 month period.

But is it just these so-called risk assets that suffer suchextremes? Definitely not. If we take UK gilts a similar, yetopposite, pattern emerges. As investors sold off equities in2008, the demand for, and consequently the price of giltsrose to record levels, making it the strongest performingasset class of the year, returning over 13% over the year. Yetas those conditions flipped, gilts lost -1% over the next 12months.

The message is clear: no single asset class

performs consistently well.

The best way to avoid these boom-and-bust cycles is tomake objective investment decisions and this means thatgetting the balance right is vital. Sadly, too many investorsrealise they have poor asset allocation only when it is toolate. It is why prevention is better than cure.

Building a balanced portfolio is a question of managingrisk versus return. Risk is not just about potential capitallosses you also have to consider the risk of inflation, forinstance, and a reduction in income if circumstances goagainst you. For example, the derisory rates on cash depositaccounts means that most peoples savings are failing to keepup with inflation. Indeed, higher-rate taxpayers need to findan account paying 5.33 per cent to keep pace with rising

prices.

Yet there are none that offer this rate, of course, all ofwhich is why many savers are being forced to look fartherafield to make the most of their money.

So the question is where do they look?

An investors attitude to risk is a key factor. The sensibleinvestor takes into account the amount of risk they areable to tolerate both emotionally and practically in termsof their individual needs. It is therefore vital to understandthe different levels of risk inherent in various types of

investments.Different asset classes have different risk profiles. Cash,

gilts and corporate bonds are generally perceived as lowerrisk investments and, historically, have provided lessvolatile returns than other asset classes. However, equitiesare considered to be further up the risk ladder but offerinvestors the potential for greater returns.

History demonstrates that investing in equities beats thereturns of other assets, including cash, over the long term.According to data from Barclays Capital, over the periodsince the end of 1899 equities have provided annualised realreturns of 5.1% versus just 1.4% for gilts and 1.0% forcash.

Whilst the asset allocation for each investors portfolio willbe dependent on their individual needs and objectives, whatis clear is that relying on just one or two asset classes toconsistently meet your income and/or capital growth needsis unlikely to be a successful strategy.

The uncertainty impacting global markets is likely to behere to stay, at least for the foreseeable future. As the bailoutdiscussions in Europe have shown, there is no quick orsimple fix. But the same cannot be said for re-organisingyour investment portfolio and the discussions you mightneed to have with your financial adviser.

The focus for Tinnitus Awareness Week

2013 is the role that nnitus support

groups can play. Tinnitus support groups

oer a vital lifeline for people around

the country, oering a chance to share

experiences, nd out how others cope

and discuss the latest informaon on

The BTA hope to enable hundreds more

people to access peer-to-peer support

through groups across the UK.

There is scope for morescent in the garden atthis time of year as manyshrubs have scented owersto attract the few pollinating

insects that are about. Try Daphnemezureum, an upright shrub

with pink owers or Daphneodora Aureomarginata anevergreen rounded shrub

with light yellow edgesto the leaves and pinkishscented starry owers.Grow them in a shelteredspot, avoid heavy claysoils and place near a pathor door so you can benetfrom scent as you come andgo.Hamamelis mollis or witch hazel

can be scented too and do best in lightshade with a neutral, moisture retentive, welldrained soil. In winter they have little spideryowers. For lovely fragrance try Hamamaelis xintermedia Pallida with pale yellow owers.Another scented gem is Lonicera purpusii

Winter Beauty, one of the honeysuckle family.

Again it likes a lighter,moisture retentive soil

but is hardy and will lla sheltered space withscent. It is also good forcutting stems for scentin the house.

Prune apple andpear trees by earlyFebruary. It is bestto do this before newgrowth starts. With

established trees, cutout any spindly, dead or

diseased shoots but leavethe main leaders (these are

the main shoots that growupwards) alone. If the tree gets

too tall, prune about half ofthe leaders back to your

required height, thenthe rest the followingyear.

Finish pruningroses before March,cutting back hard tooutward facing budson newer growth. Cut

out spindly stems anddead wood so you have

a framework of strongstems from which new

growth develops.Carefully cut or pull out dead stalks

from ornamental grasses. Fine grasses can becombed with a spring tined rake. Grasses suchas Miscanthus or Stipa require dead stems to becut back near ground level but avoiding cuttingnew growth.

St. Valentine Day is the day of the year when you can express your loveto the people you appreciate and love. But how did it all start? Is it justa cynical ploy by the card industry to get us to part with more money!Well, the story goes that here once was a priest named Valentine, he livedin Rome during the third century. At that time, Rome was ruled by anemperor named Claudius. Claudius wanted to have a big army and heexpected men to volunteer to join. Many men just did not want to ght inwars, so they didnt sign up. This made Claudius furious. So he had a crazy idea. He thought that ifmen were not married, they would not mind joining the army. So Claudius decided not to allow any

more marriages. One of Valentines activities was to marry couples. Even after Emperor Claudiuspassed his law, he kept on performing marriage ceremonies secretly at night.

One night, he was caught, thrown in jail and told that my punishment was death.

Many young people came to the jail to visit me. They threw owers and notes up to his cell window.One of these young people was the daughter of the prison guard. Her father allowed her to visit mein the cell. On the day he was to die, he left a little note thanking her for her friendship and loyalty;he signed it, Love from your Valentine. This started the custom of exchanging love messages onValentines Day. It was written on the day he died, February 14, 269 A.D.

Many people mark valentines on this day - greeting cards, which can be romantic, sentimental or

funny. The card can be anonymous. Valentine cards became popular in Great Britain in the nineteenthcentury. Many historians believe that sending poems on this day originated with the capture of Duke ofOrleans, during the Battle of Agincourt. He sent his wife a rhyming love letter, from his prison cell inthe Tower of London. February 14 became the date for exchanging love messages and Saint Valentinebecame the patron saint of lovers.

This year as we celebrate Valentines Day remember that love actually is more of a choice than afeeling, Of course, there is a feeling we call love, and its a wonderful feeling, too. People write songsand poems about it; Hollywood lm stars appear in movies about it, and it sells millions of poundsworth of magazines, valentine cards and paperback books. But recently I read this There are lots ofsongs about falling in love, and there are lots of songs about falling out of love, but there arent many

songs about just being in love, and all the ups and downs of it, how you make it last forever. Love ina marriage or any long term relationship needs to experience romantic love but it is built upon thefoundation of committed love where we make choices to work at the love we have, even when we dontfeel we are in love. Lets use this years Valentine to renew our commitment to work at being in love sothat the relationship we are in can last a lifetime.
