preparation for the New York Marathon.

Jenny, who raced in the London marathon last year, is hoping

to raise over 2,000 for charity

As someone whose birthday is at the start of January I never manage to honour my New Yearresolutions and am hugely relieved to have a new chance in February!

Now there are many people who challenge the value of New Year Resolutions. They tend tobe the same people who declare a long list of wishful thinking and then become disillusionedwhen they resort back to the same old same old. New Year Resolutions are a good thing.They act as a declaration that you wish to change something about your life and in myexperience the rst step to change is in the declaration.

So do take the opportunity now to look at your life. What is working? What would you like towork better?

Personally, like lots of people I want to lose weight. Like lots of people I know how to loseweight. Its easy Eat less than I consume in calories. If the rst step is the Declaration , allthe following steps are those moments during the day when you have a choice.

If you want to earn more money this year , start with a declaration of how much money youwant to earn. Then start looking each day for the ways that you could offer more value at work(smile more, contribute more, ask for more) and seize any opportunities that come your way.The secret to becoming rich is easy . RECENTLYI was sitting in a trafc queue recently on Hoole Bridge, we weremoving very slowly, when the sound of a siren echoed out over the cars.

Instinctively people responded by moving the cars to one side or anothergiving the room needed for the ambulance to get through and travel on to theemergency it was attending. I thought to myself isnt it great how peoplework together in a moment when they perceive an emergency need.Looking across at the burnt out shell of the Enterprise Centre I beganto think about the same response right across our city and country aspeople have instinctively responded and worked together to providehelp and support for the countries and communitys devastated by thedifferent disasters across the world in 2010.

In my work as a leader of a Christian faith community I come acrossmany situations where there is no evidence of people working together,where people are alone with no sense of community. It sometime seemsthat most people are just looking out for number one, that is themselvesand they have no time for others. In the geographical neighbourhoodsaround Chester communities are working hard to make where they livea better place to live. But this goal will only ever be achieved when wework together, churches around this city are working hard to serve the communities they are in but moreoften than not they work in isolation from others. Across Chester there are many partnerships; different

organisations from the public sector, the private sector, and the community/ voluntary sector, the faithcommunities of Chester need to be a part of these partnerships so that we can be a contributing factor inworking together and seeking the goal of bring hope and making a difference for good.

Ive been reecting this past week on the word hope. What is the source of our hope? Whats thedifference between a wish and a hope? Why is hope so important? What do you hope for in 2011? For theChristian, hope is an integral part of ones faith and I would argue hope is also crucial to those who havelittle or no faith. Maybe the events of this past year can inspire us all to come together, those with faithin God, those with no faith to work together for the good of the whole and to bring hope. In some wayswe cant afford to wait until there is an emergency; today is a good time to start, together we can make adifference and be people of hope.

One practical thing that we at Hoole Baptist Church are going to do, that we anticipate could bring hopeto some within our community, is to run the CAP Money Course. With the recession showing no sign ofabating, we will be offering local residents in Hoole the chance to get their nances back on track with afree money management course. This will teach people budgeting skills and a simple, cash-based moneymanagement system that really works. This course has universal appeal and is a three-session course,featuring weekly DVD presentations and trained volunteers from the church who will then work throughindividual budgets with delegates. The frst session will be on Wednesday 9th February.
