at which is going to help us survive,so ironically we dont burn it and

instead begin to break down muscle,

us burn at so with less muscle we

Consider some of the following perennialswhich will ower year after year. Campanulalactiora is a tall plant with stems of bellshaped owers in pink, white or blue. Plantit at the back of a border in sun or light

shade. The Shasta daisy, Leucanthemum xsuperbum Snowcap, has white daisy owersand also likes a sunny position. I love thesword shaped leaves of Crocosmia so trytaller varieties with their clusters of red,yellow or orange owers. They like a sunnyplace and do best in moist soil that doesnot dry out. In dry years owering can bedisappointing but when happy, some tallvarieties like Lucifer, will reach 1 metre in

height.

Penstemons are also good for oweringfrom summer into autumn with tubularbell owers in a wide range of colours.Last winter my 2 plants were killed by theprolonged cold spell but they had survived5 years. Its easy to take cuttings from them.Cut off new green shoots (not woody stems)about 10 cm long and remove the lowerleaves. Place in a glass of water and you maynd that some will produce roots after a fewweeks if you change the water regularly. Potup into compost when there are lots of roots.

In July cut back owering shrubs such aslilac, weigela and philadelphus, just afterthey nish owering, if you want to reducethem in size. Cut off dead owers from

roses, penstemons, delphiniums, centaurea,nepeta and lupins and you may well get asecond ush of owers in late summer always a bonus!

Dead heading annuals in pots will keepthem owering and do remember to keeppots well watered in dry weather. Sow saladseeds of radishes, rocket, lambs lettuce andlettuce for autumn cropping.

Atticus Finch (portrayed by Gregory Peck, from to Kill a Mockingbird),was chosen as the greatest hero in 100 years of lm history, while the greatestvillain was revealed as the brilliant, cunning and psychotic Dr. Hannibal Lecter(portrayed by Anthony Hopkins, from The Silence of the Lambs and Hannibal).Others in the top 10 heroes were Indiana Jones, James Bond, Rick Blaine,Will Kane, joining Hannibal in the top 10 villains were Norman Bates, DarthVader, the Wicked Witch of the West.

One daydream that almost all of us have had is to be a hero. The heroes ofour daydreams vary; often, as we grow, so do our ideas of heroes developand become more sophisticated. Tellingly, early hero-worship is oftencalled looking up to someone, and, obviously, as children, we literally look up

to those tall people, our parents, who are probably our rst heroes. However,once we really begin to consider heroes, one particular difculty seems to ariseagain and again. That problem is identifying a hero. So how do we determinewho a hero is, or how someone comes to be a hero.

Some people say that heroes areborn and not made, that heroismis a matter of fate, but if heroesare made, who - or what - makesthem? Heroes in the moviescan be called upon to illustrate both sides of this question. Inone sense, heroes seemed to be determined, that is made, by acommon understanding. Most people simply agreed that heroeswere literally extraordinary, and performed astonishing deeds,far beyond the capabilities of the average person. One quality thatquickly arises in a discussion of heroes is courage. At the momentthis is clearly highlighted in the campaign Help our Heroes As

their website states; Its about the blokes, our men and women of the Armed Forces. Its about Derek, arugby player who has lost both his legs, its about Carl whose jaw is wired up so he has been drinking througha straw. Its about Richard who was handed a mobile phone as he lay on the stretcher so he could say goodbyeto his wife. Its about Ben, its about Steven and Andy and Mark, its about them all. They are just blokes butthey are our blokes; they are our heroes. We want to help our heroes.

In the last 10/15 years we nd a maker of heroes that ignores, engulf s or surpasses all previous creatorsof heroes. That inuence is, simply, the media. It is true that without the media, which may discover and

certainly announce people of valour and honour to us, we might never get to know of the heroes amongst us.More sinisterly though, the media can be supercial and capricious. The past itself changes under our eyes;people who are nobodies one moment are apparently heroes the next and then these same people aregone again! Are the media identifying something else for us - not the hero but the celebrity - someone whohas attained the fteen minutes of fame that Andy Warhol claimed we were all due? If heroes are made andnot born, who or what makes them? But if they are born and not made, how shall we know them?

It was Heather Small who sang, Search for the Hero inside yourself, until you nd the key to your life Is itpossible to nd that hero by just looking inside, I wonder if in fact if this is just a part of the truth, for me myhero is someone marked by sacrice, he once said, no greater love has this than a person lay down his life forhis friend, and then this is what he did; This is person is Jesus! Although he a someone I look to imitate andfollow, he is also someone who now lives in me and enables me to live a life that is marked with character, this

I hope enables me to make the right choice, to do the right thing when I am called upon to do it at the righttime, then maybe just maybe I can be a hero to some else!
