West CoastIT was great to visit the Coronation Gardens Fair last month to see the progress made. It was previously known as a ‘dog toilet’ but has been tidied up brilliantly by a group of tireless volunteers. During the summer the gardens will be holding a number of ‘Art in the Park’ events to promote local artists’ work. We’ve got pictures from the event on pages 12&13.In this summer edition we’ve also got pictures from the official opening of the extension at St Bridget’s CofE School and the celebration event for MP Esther McVey.As for West Coast, we are taking a break for August but will see you again in September.Have a great summer and please support your local businesses.

Now could be the right time to find a financial advisor who completely

understands your financial affairs and provides a highly tailored service

You neverknow what’s around the corner

Financial column with Simon Tutton, from the Hadlow Edwards Partnership

How many times do we say these words with-out really thinking about the consequences of

what is around the corner? It might be great news – a new baby or even a win on the lottery.

But sometimes, without warning, life throws the unthinkable at us. Many of us will know people who have died young or suffered a life changing illness and we all hope it will never happen to us. A long-term illness or injury can be life changing and the financial consequences can be devastating for our families and us.Survival rates for some serious cancers have im-

proved dramatically over the last 10 years with over 80% female breast cancer sufferers and around 70% of prostate cancer sufferers still alive after 5 years – source: National Statistics Online April 2009 period 2001-2007. However, many of these sufferers would not able to return to work full time.If this were to happen to you, ask yourself the follow-

ing questions.- How long would my finances last?- What will I get from the state?- How long will I get paid at work? Details of staff sickness terms can usually be found

in a staff handbook or contract and you can find out about sick pay entitlement at www.entitledto.co.uk,

www.direct.gov.co.uk will also explain about the state benefit availability and how long it is paid for. These benefits will only provide minimal income sufficient to maintain a basic standard of living, but are unlikely to replace lost salary. Income Protection Insurance (IRP) can provide a

top up to state benefits by providing a regular income on diagnosis of an illness or injury that keeps you off work for a significant period. These plans provide a tax-free income of between 50% and 60% of your income, paid monthly, either until you return to work or retire. Usually plans have a deferred period before the benefit starts to be paid out, which matches the length of time you continue to be paid. For example, if you are entitled to six months’ pay then an IRP policy would start paying out after the six months period is up. It’s important that the right plan is taken out to suit

your circumstances, as there are different options available in the market. A full review of your needs in this area with a qualified Financial Adviser would be essential to ensure you end up with the correct cover.

I like to reminisce with people I don’t know.

lOrD Hunt of Wirral, President of abbeyfield, and the last Conservative MP of Wirral West, joined newly elected member of Parliament esther McVey to open the new extension at lear House, West Kirby.lear House is part ofabbeyfield Hoylake

& West Kirby Society, that is affiliated to The abbeyfield Society. Their goal is to respond to the ever changing needs of men and women in our community who are looking for a lifestyle choice which gives them the support and security they need to maintain their independence for as long as possible or for those who require 24-hour care and support. esther and lord Hunt joined residents

to celebrate their new lounge, that was

built using funds from local donations. “The abbeyfield philosophy for

independent living obviously works well as 106-year-old, Mrs Glover and 102-year-old, Mrs Warhurst prove. We sat and chatted about how things had changed over the last 100 years and Selina who’d enjoyed the TV political debates gave me a grilling on the new coalition.” said esther McVey MP Mrs Selina Glover. Mrs Glover will be

102 years old on 30th of this month and Mrs Win Warhurst. Mrs Warhurst is 106 years old (107 at the end of the year), Esther McVey MP and Lord Hunt of Wirral

door, but now the school can accommodate all the 400 plus children in the main building.Much of the work was carried out last year but the official opening took place on 11th

Q. Help! I have very puffy skin below my eyes. What can I do to reduce the puffiness?a. This question is asked so frequently that I have decided to give an

extended answer to your question. The solution to puffy eyes will depend very much on the cause of the

puffiness. If you have always had puffy eyes, this may indicate that you are genetically predisposed to having fatty deposits in this area; or, the puffiness could be a result of ageing when the fat pads beneath the skin start to shift altering the eye contour. In both of these instances there is really is no cure other than with surgery. However, if your eyes aren’t usually puffy and you awake to find your

under eye area is swollen, this type of puffiness is related to inflammation. Firstly, you need to apply something to reduce the swelling. Cold compresses are a good, quick and inexpensive solution because cold causes swollen skin to contract. Soak cotton wool pads or a piece of clean cloth in cold (not icy cold) water, or apply a gel-filled eye mask from the refrigerator. Cold cucumber slices are also helpful, but they work

because they are cool, not because they have any magical ingredient. You can also apply used, cooled tea bags, however they need to be the caffeinated type as the caffeine together with the tannins helps to contract the distended skin. Whatever you decide to use, lightly press the cold compress on the puffy areas for several minutes to help the swelling subside. Continual puffing up and then deflating of the delicate

skin around the eyes will eventually lead to eye bags and wrinkling so it’s important to find the cause of the puffiness. If you wear eye makeup ensure that you are removing all

traces every night. avoid using an oily eye makeup remover as this can often cause puffiness. Whilst on the subject of skin care products make sure that

you use a product specifically designed for the delicate eye area and use the product very sparingly. a bead of eye cream about the size of a grain of rice is ample for the eye area. During the daytime it is also important that your eye cream contains a sunscreen to prevent the thin, fragile skin around the eyes from premature wrinkling. Check the ingredient list of your skin care products to ensure that they do not contain fragrance. Throw out any products that contain fragrance. rubbing the eyes can also lead to puffiness and check out

any allergies that you may have from pollens or food with your GP.

July – hiGh SummErGardEninG by JanET hEaTh

IN July, many of the flowering shrubs are over and colour comes from the perennials in your garden. Cool blues can be found in lavenders

which enjoy hot dry situations and will seed themselves into gravel if you have a gravel path or drive. lavender Hidcote with dark blue flowers is a smaller shrub than the original english lavender which has longer stems of pale blue flowers. Both look good bordering a path or near a seating area where you can brush against the foliage to release the scent. They can die off in hard winters and tend to become sparse with age so expect to replace them after a few years. Once flowering is over, clip the shrub back but do not cut back into wood without green growth. lavenders do not sprout new shoots from leafless wood. Try planting lavender with deep purple sage

plants for contrast in foliage colour and texture. There are some good robust perennials that

flower in July that will come up year after year and require little attention. If you want vibrant magenta colour, try the perennial geranium

ann Folkard. The plant is not very tall and produces stems of flowers with black and magenta pink flowers from summer to autumn. Cut off the stems after flowering and more should be produced in autumn. Plant the geranium with a yellow Hemerocallis

or day lily for a bright and cheerful display of contrasting shapes and colours. Hemerocallis come in a range of large and small varieties with grassy or strap like leaves and tall heads of lily flowers in July. In the vegetable garden, plant out winter leeks

and brassicas such as broccoli and sprouts. Sow lettuce when the weather is cooler, germination of lettuce seeds is poor in high temperatures so wait for a cooler period before sowing seed. Net fruit such as strawberries and blueberries so the birds do not eat the fruit first. raspberries seem to be largely immune probably as the fruit is not so easy for birds to reach.

LAST month I mentioned Bob and Peter who, with myself, launched our local classic car club ‘Triumph Appreciation’. This month I want to introduce you to Peter and of course his lovely Triumph TR6.The day I first met Peter I was driving

my youngest boy Mike to go swimming in Chester, we were in our 1968 Tr. In those days my Triumph was still waiting a restoration, which it was very much in need of at that time! Driving along the Chester road about a mile past Gayton roundabout Mike and I heard something falling off the car. Not wanting to spoil the lads excitement concerning his promised treat I said, ‘Don’t worry about that son, we’ll pick it up on our way back.’ Some time later as I trawled along the gutters my attention was drawn to a young man leaning on the gate of a nearby house. On going over to see what he wanted, what should I notice down his driveway? Yes it was the lovely red Tr6 shown above, the year was 1990 and the young

man was Peter Hall. The rest is history, as they say but that day, I did lose a bit from off my car... but I found a great new friend. The picture above was taken this

month. The car is a 1972 model which Peter bought in 1989. These cars have straight 6 cylinder engines of 2498 cc, petrol injection and 150 bhp. They have independent suspension all round and the option of an overdrive to give them a six speed gearbox. Most of us would be content with that. However this one has been to Tr Bitz near Warrington for a few discreet little mod’s to the brakes, suspension and engine and now it goes like the proverbial off a shovel and is music to the ears of any one who loves cars. Twenty years on Peter and I may be looking a little older but this Tr still feels like its in its romper suit. These are sometimes known as the last of the great British sports cars and I think there may just be something in that!Dave evennett. [email protected]

I was walking down the street wearing glasses when the prescription ran out.

Paperback Fiction: The Lacuna - Barbara KingsolverSome of the national reviews have been rather lukewarm about this book, but I

really loved it. The main character, Harrison Shepherd, is a novelist who writes romantic adventures. Born in Washington, by the age of 13 he is living in Mexico with his mother, and her right-wing businessman boyfriend. Shepherd gets a job as a cook with Diego rivera and his artist wife, Frida Kahlo, (real life characters) who take Trotsky into their household when he has to flee russia and hide from Stalin’s hit-men. The assassin eventually arrives, Trotsky is murdered, and the second half of the novel deals with the way Shepherd’s private life is taken to pieces by McCarthyist ‘red’ witch-hunters who suspect him of being a militant Communist. I know many of our customers are big fans of The Poisonwood Bible and I

would dare to suggest this is just as good. Kingsolver has a magic way of looking at history from a new angle and this is a highly satisfying and many-layered novel. Perfect holiday reading and a great one for your Book Club- I hope to do it in ours!

Biography: The Bridge: The Life and Rise of Barack Obama- David RemnickThe rise of Barack Obama is one of the great stories of this

century: a defining moment in american history, and one with truly global resonance. Until now, no journalist or historian has written a book that fully investigates the circumstances and experiences of Obama’s life or explores the ambition and conviction behind his journey to election. The Bridge offers a portrait, at once masterly and fresh, nuanced and unexpected, of the man who was determined to become the first african-american president. This is a big book but an important one for students of american politics and there are moments of small personal detail which prevent it from becoming too dry.

Cooking: Cooking is Fun: Grace Aderonke Adegoke (Local Author)as well as running a successful afro-Caribbean restaurant, local author

Grace has had time to put together this book of mouth-watering dishes using nothing but fresh ingredients. I can vouch for the deliciousness of her recipes as she recently had a tasting session outside linghams- the mixture of smells drifting through the open door into the shop were utterly tantalizing! Her book is beautifully produced with easy to follow instructions and lovely photography. Highly recommended.
