YOUNG people from Hoole took time out

to clean up abandoned spaces in their

community.

Chester and District Housing Trust (CDHT)

residents tackled dog fouling, empty bottles

and broken glass to spruce up The Narrowsand Walker Street play area.

They were joined by two Cheshire West

and Chester Council (CWaC) community

safety wardens, Police Community Ofcer

Keith Bartlett and Hoole councillor and

CDHT chair Bob Thompson.

Volunteers also repainted the youth shelter

in Limewood Fields - which had been

covered in offensive grafti - using paint

donated by the Council’s StreetScenedepartment.

The makeovers were part of CDHT’S Our

Say Our Way project, funded by the Big

Lottery, which aims to give young people a

voice.

CDHT youth worker Rebecca Bowker said:

“The group carried out some really positivework and after we had nished the park in

Hoole was completely free from rubbish. The

shelter also looks in much better condition

now thanks to everyone’s hard work.”

Cllr Thompson added: “This is a great

example of how partnership working can

really bring about results within an area.”

Anyone wishing to get involved with Our

Say Our Way should call Rebecca Bowker

New homes for the elderly in Hoole

A NEW housing trust complex in Hoole has been ofcially opened.

Margaret Millichamp, the rst resident at Chester & District Housing Trust’s (CDHT) Hoole

at Willow Crescent, Hoole.

The new scheme comprises 24 high quality apartments to rent with another 12 on a shared

ownership basis. The development for over 55’s has increased the number of affordable

homes in the community and was completed by contractors G&J Seddon.

CDHT Chief Executive John Denny said:“We’re really proud of Hoole House, which is one

of four schemes opening this year and means we have invested £13 million in over 55’s

Switched on

MAKE a date for Saturday 19th November when the Hoole

Christmas Lights will be switched on. It’s usually a really good,

festive event and sets Hoole apart from some of the other

districts in the city.

Sainsbury’s set to move in

IT looks like the former Peters Hi-Fi premises on the corner of Faulkner Street and Charles

Street will become a Sainsbury’s Local store. The retail giant has submitted plans to

Cheshire West and Chester Council for a small supermarket on the site.

Mobile phone mast protest

PLANS for a mobile phone mast at Brookside Terrace have been put forward.

One resident living nearby told us that she would be objecting to the scheme because she

feared the health implications of a mast so close to houses. The proposed mast will support

six antennas including an adjacent cabinet.

The council’s planners are due to make a decision within a matter of months so objections

need to be in early.Local councillor Bob Thompson will be calling the application in, supported by fellow

councillors from Hoole and Newton.

Christmas concert

THERE will be a Christmas Concert by The City of Chester Male Voice Choir with special

guests Oaklands School Choir (Winsford) on Saturday 4th December at All Saints Church,

Hoole, at 7.30pm Tickets obtainable from 01244 349931.

Some thoughts about Hoole by Andy Medcraft

I’ve com to ralis that I will always b a sourc of

disappointmnt to my Mothr. No mattr what I do,

sh will always b ‘pushing’ m to achi. Somtims

sh dos this without n nding to spak. A singl

look can cony a thousand words. And wow, has sh

prfctd thos looks. Haing spnt th wk stam

claning th carpts, Fbrzing th lif out of ry soft

furnishing and polishing th glass in ry pictur fram

to an within a millimtr of nothingnss, sh dro into

Hool for an xtndd wknd and promptly told m

that th loung smlt of bacon!

With my othr half shdding stons at Slimming World

lik thy ar going out of fashion, th last thing my

kitchn has sn othr than wholmal pasta and quark,

is bacon.

Bemused, my father and I began snifng the air. Nope.

Not a whiff. W managd to pass it off as th appl grn

candl that had burnd unnly and lft a sooty stainagainst it’s glass containr. My fathr wasn’t conincd

but it was soon forgottn about as I introducd thm to

th dlights of Wok and Go and draggd thm around

th city walls to walk up an apptit prior to its dliry.

“That glass could do with a clan” sh said, sttling

hrslf back into th sofa that I could s sh was

rgrtting donating to us. Sh strokd th arm of it

loingly as sh fantasisd how it would look back hom in

hr consratory.

Cl tt

My mothr is on of thos popl who wants you to

b your bst. Sh dosn’t suffr fools and sh crtainly

dosn’t allow you to rst on your laurls. Growing up I

would proudly show hr th picturs I had paintd that

my tachrs was claiming wr mastrpics. Sh would

look at thm, smil and tll m thy wr good – but sh

knw I could do bttr. And it was thos ractions that

dro m. I followd art through collg and unirsity

and n wnt on to tach it at scondary school. Sh was

my driing forc. Sh was my inspiration. And althoughto all outsid, I was a rolling ston gathring no moss,

moing from essx to Surry to London to Brkshir

before nally leaping up here to Cheshire, I have always

bn a mummy’s boy at hart.

I bookd th Friday off work and w wondrd along

the canal into Chester. She loves the city and I’m quite

proud to call it my hom. But what sh los mor is

Hool.

Although I may not b arning th wag my Brothr is

arning in London and taking th holidays or publishing

the book (half nished and collecting dust) or setting up

my own crati businss or losing th wight or tucking

in my shirt or kping th bard trimmd mor, thr is

that littl spark in hr y that hr oldst has don hr

proud. It may smll of bacon (in hr ys – and I will b

contacting customer services at Febreze) but the house is

homly, th strt quit and thos nighbours w actually

s ar frindly. And by moing hr and initing hr to

com and stay sh gts to b a part of it.

Cmmt

Thr is a ib that I ha not found anywhr ls. Thr is a ral community spirit. Whil w lappd up

th atmosphr at th Faulknr, taking full adantag of

th ‘two for on’ Pizza’s and soaking up th hous rd, I

pointd out Sntimnts by Sonia – th quirky card shop

across the road that will stock my Christmas Cards later

this yar. Sh was bursting with prid with that on –

major points to m.

And so, when we had nished and paid the bill we

wandered into Charles Street to peer in at the cards and

gifts. Hr y was thn drawn to nighbouring shops and

nally Baked. Well, thank you Baked, from the bottom

of my heart. Coupled with Deli Vert and the Faulkner

my Mothr is now placing Hool on that pddl stool

alongsid Nw York, Paris and London.

I think I’ crackd it. As long as I stay liing 300 mils

away in th plac that ‘...brings a touch of Notting Hill

to Chester’ I will have stepped up to the mark. And she,

th ducatd woman who is lgant, honst, wll rsd

and talks to Dermot O’Leary via the television (Sigmund

Freud, analyse that) will always be my inspiration. And

Hoole will always be my muse and my home. Oh, and my Dad will always be the man who moves his head instead

of th toothbrush! Gnius. Whr would I b without

such factors in my lif.

Recently I add a 50h Birhda braio wih a vr osfrid of ours, Su, m wif, had kow Pam si h wr 11,

h m a sodar shoo! tha mas h had 39 ars of mmoris, iudig som vr happ os ad som qua as sad.

We were looking through some photo albums, which recorded some of these events through some specic photographs at christenings, weddings, holidays and Christmas times. We had great fun looking through oldphotos and it certainly stirred up lots of memories as we rememberedthe stories that lay behind each of the photos. To be able to rememberis wonderful, the brain’s ability to store, retain, and recall informationcreates memories. As we get older memories become more important tous, remembering our childhood, remembering loved ones who have passedaway and remembering those special occassions we celebrate within life.

Of course not all memories are happy ones, one of the amazing dimensionsof remembering is that emotions are attched to our memories, so when weremember someone or some event we encounter afreash the emotions that

 belong to that memory.

November is a month for remembering and as a nation we remember twospecic things:

Remember remember the fth of November Gunpowder, treason and plot.

I see no reason why gunpowder, treason Should ever be forgot...

Words of “Remember Remember” refer to Guy Fawkes with origins in 17th century English history. On the5th November 1605 Guy Fawkes was caught in the cellars of the Houses of Parliament with several dozen

barrels of gunpowder. Guy Fawkes was subsequently tried as a traitor with his co-conspirators for plottingagainst the government. Fawkes was sentenced to death and the form of the execution was one of the mosthorrendous ever practised (hung, drawn and quartered) which reected the serious nature of the crime of treason. The following year in 1606 it became an annual custom for the King and Parliament to commissiona sermon to commemorate the event. This practice, together with the nursery rhyme, ensured that thiscrime would never be forgotten!

Then on Remembrance Day, the 11th November, this day chosen because it was the day that World WarOne ended in 1918, when the armistice was signed in Northern France, at 5am. Six hours later, the ghtingstopped, and to commemorate this there is a two-minute silence in the UK at 11am. This year is a very

special occasion as it will be 11am on the 11/11/11. A poem called ‘For the Fallen’ is often read aloud on theoccasion; the most famous stanza of which reads:

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morningWe will remember them.

I don’t know if you’ve ever given any thought to the fact that God remembers. God is omniscient, by denition. That means He knows everything there is to know. He has perfect memory of each and every thing including the wrong that we’ve committed. When we remember some memories we will have feelingsof regret and remorse, sometimes we would wish we could change something that was said or done by us orto us. By experiencing God’s forgiveness we can ‘move on’ from these feelings. God does not mysteriously and suddenly “forget” all the bad and wrong things but because of the death of Jesus he chooses toremember them no more – this is the hope of the Christian faith, forgiveness from God via the experienceof knowing Jesus enables us to forgive and be forgiven so that we can be free from the effects of some of the

bad memories that we so easily remember and become entrapped within the emotions of these memories.
