WELCOME to a packed edition of the Hoole Roundabout. Sometimes teens get a bad press so it’s good to see their work in the community being recognised. Last month hundreds of young people across Hoole did lots of tasks in the community as part of the Chesterfest celebrations and we have pictures of the event on p26.We’ve also got gardening advice, Len Morgan’s history column, an update on the Millennium Greenway and a recipe from the Grosvenor Pulford.

We hope you enjoy the magazine Jon WhiteTalkabout Publishing

NEW BEGINNING?NEW BEGINNING?

Andy Glover has lived in Hoole with his wife Sue for 20 years. Andy began at Hoole Baptist Church, on Westminster Road, as Youth Pastor, before becoming the Pastor and now Team Leader.

I WOULD like to wish all our Jewish readers in Hoole L’Shanah Tovah, have a Happy New Year 5770. Rosh Hashanah occurs on the fi rst and second days of the Hebrew month Tishri. In 2009 this will begin at sundown on Friday September 18 and ends at nightfall on Sunday September 20. The Jewish New Year celebration begins with the blowing of the shofar (the ram’s horn) in the synagogue. This marks the start of the ten High Holy Days of the Jewish calendar. In Hebrew, Rosh Hashanah means, literally, “head of the year” or “fi rst of the year.” Rosh Hashanah is commonly known as the Jewish New Year. The Jewish New Year is no different from that of other religions and cultures in that there are many traditions and symbolic foods associated with it. But unlike the UK culture, there isn’t lots of wild partying. Rather, the holiday is a period of prayer and refl ection shared with one’s family and friends. There is, however, one important similarity between the Jewish New Year and the UK one: Many of us use the New Year as a time to plan a better life, making “resolutions.” Likewise, the Jewish New Year is a time to begin introspection, looking back at the mistakes of the past year and planning the changes to make in the new year. Let’s explore a little the concept of new beginning; this can be in the

arena of fi tness and health, or maybe in the arena of relationships, throughout life we need from time to time to think about making a new start. But is it possible to start again or to begin to follow new course or direction in your life. Christianity has at its heart the concept of new beginnings, a second chance, and the opportunity to change. Forgiveness is a key to the embracing of new beginnings especially in relationships – is there someone you need to contact or reconnect with - a friend or family member, maybe even your spouse or partner where a new beginning is needed. To build a relationship we will need to give and receive forgiveness, this is true in our relationship with God – many times in my Christian faith I have needed to know that I am forgiven.Maybe this month of September could be the time for you to experience a new beginning

to experience the change you desire to see in your life. I hope that this “New Year” will be a year of new opportunities and relationships. To explore the new beginning and the opportunity for change that Christianity offers then why don’t you consider attending The Alpha Course. Discover how the Alpha Course has introduced more than 2 million people in the UK to the Christian faith in a fun, relaxed and friendly setting. The course and materials are free and if you want to know more about the Christian faith, or you just want the chance to chat about what it means to be a Christian, then the Alpha Course is for you. Here in Hoole starting with a Celebration Meal on September 24th at the Queen Hotel at 7pm

and then for 10 weeks the course will run in All Saints Church Centre. If you would like to know more then please ring 312037 and ask for Hazel or visit www.hbc.org.uk I end with the Jewish New Year Prayer: May you be inscribed in the Book of Life for a year of

health, happiness and prosperity. Let this be a time for renewing faith and hope for peace.

Custard in one ear, jelly in the other. Sorry, I’m a trifl e deaf!

Do you realise that some doorstep lenders charge up to 545% APR on loans. one finance company, has agreed, according to a report in The Guardian on 28th July, that some of its customers have been charged annualised inter-est rates of up to 545%! They reported profits for the first 6 months of 2009 at £53.1mill, up 3.5%.This prompted the charity `Barnardo`s ` to call on the office of Fair Trading to to investigate the practices of lenders that `prey on the poor`. They cited an example of a loan calculation of £500 over 23 weeks, the total repaid would be £747.50 – an interest rate of 545% APR.There are several `doorstep lender` com-panies with thousands of customers in Cheshire West, calling on people and offering personal loans to people who have few other choices. If you are paying off a loan and you are un-happy with the amount you have to pay back, there is an alternative. West Cheshire Credit Union exists to provide small, lo-cost loans to people who live or work in the West Cheshire area. The most a credit union can charge, by law, is 2% per month, equivalent to 26.8% APR, a massive difference with any current doorstep credit business. `Many of our customers have taken out a loan from us to pay off a doorstep lender, and then they save a lot in future interest payments` said John Dearnley, Marketing Director of West Cheshire Credit Union. If you have a current loan with a doorstep lender, the sooner you join the credit union and pay it off with a lower-cost loan, the more you will save. This has to be a sensible move, to join call 01244 399006 or use the website, wccu.co.uk to download an application form.

Lynn Owen, from the Chester Chiro-practic Clinic, explains how ancient

Chinese methods can treat a wide range of ailments.lynn specialises in acupuncture, Chinese

herbal medicine and massageshe has been a therapist for over 18 years,

starting as a massage therapist, then qualifying in Traditional Chinese acupuncture in 1999 and Chinese herbal medicine in 2002. a wide range of ailments are treated in the

clinic, conditions commonly treated fall into the following categories: eye, ear, nose and throat, circulatory, gastrointestinal, gynaeco-logical, genito-urinary, immune, musculo-skeletal, neurological, respiratory, emotional and psychological. many women choose to have acupuncture

throughout pregnancy and childbirth. in ad-dition, it is increasingly used by couples dealing with problems of fertility or to sup-port iVf treatment.

in most cases of the above ailment just acupuncture is used, when treating musculo-skeletal or arthritis lynn often combines acupuncture with massage, as she finds this combination is often more effective as well as being very relaxing, herbal medicine is recom-mended in some cases especially if symptoms are very acute. in all cases a complete case history is noted,

taking into account your current symptoms, what treatment you have received, your medi-cal history, your diet, digestive system, sleep-ing patterns and emotional state, so during treatment we treat the whole person rather than an isolated symptom to improve your overall health. HOOLE HOUSE1760 – 1972

HOOLE house was built by William Hamilton in 1760 and remained in his

family until 1815 when the resident was Lady Eliza Broughton. She remodelled the property extensively with Thomas Harrison to include a conservatory along the entire front elevation, a camellia house and a geranium house.

Lady Broughton had the largest household in Hoole employing some 16 people to look after herself, her farmland, formal gardens, kitchen gardens and lawns. Between 1826 and 1834 Lady Broughton designed and erected a rock garden, which covered over 34 foot high. The rockery consisted of a central formal lawn inserted with 27 circular fl owerbeds each ten feet in diameter. Around the garden was red sandstone retaining wall and between the wall and the lawn was the rockery itself. The massive stones stood vertically point at the sky. They were modelled on the Savoy Mountains and the Chamonix Valley. Inset into clefts and crags were white marble chippings to simulate snow caps and the whole garden was planted up with yews, cedars, pine, rhododendrons and alpines.

Lady Eliza Broughton died in 1857 leaving the house to Martha Panton who died in 1883 passing the property back to the Hamilton family. Claud Hamilton Vivian sold part of the land in 1890 to Henry Sumter, a local builder, and the house and remaining land was sold to Mrs Potts of Hoole Hall. The land was sod again in 1917, 1921 and 1934 when it was purchases by William Paul. Much of the land was sold to Hoole UDC to build pine, Cedar and Maple Groves. After the war, the new estate swallowed up more of the old gardens and the house became fl ats in 1953.

By 1972 the house was in a state of decay, the conservatory longs since gone, the gardens vanished under new housing and no-one within living memory remembered the rock garden. The fi nal insult to the fi ne mansion house was to pull it down. New elderly persons housing was built on the site.

It is thought that Hoole House and all its associations have been wiped away, yet it lives on it the street names, Panton Road, Hamilton street, Vivian Terrace, Pine Grove, Cedar Grove and Maple Grove etc. Hark back to the trees in the formal gardens and a willow tree survives in Willow Crescent, which stood by the lake. At the rear of Willow Grove is a large cedar tree on an embankment near some garages with a part of the sandstone retaining wall still standing, yet out of place. It is suggested that parts of the gardens were transported to Hoole Hall when Mrs Potts owned both properties, as remnants of a smaller rockery lay scattered there in the 1960s and 70s.

THERE was no showpiece Chesterfest event in Hoole this year. Instead, the local churches put their efforts into doing jobs in the community for CAKE (Community Acts of Kindness Experience). All Saints Church played host to over 200 young people and youth leaders who carried out all sorts of tasks, including car washing, painting, garden tidying and helping with holiday clubs.

Helping out is a piece of cake!

FAR sighted councillors and the general public understood the need for traffi c free pathways and would actually be ‘innovative and a prestigious’ . Improving all walking and cycling facilities in Chester and districts has been rewarding, footfall is excellent, with Chester now winning the title Cycle City. It was only natural the pathway would be extended out into our own countryside enabling two way safe passage for those wishing to travel with environment in mind. The construction work on the extension to Guilden Sutton and Mickle Trafford is progressing at a grand pace. Work on the bridge is progressing nicely along with the access area. The new layout will bring curves and slight hills. The planting up ideas are exciting - so far there are suggestions that for old English fruit trees, oak, hawthorn etc., could replace trees removed to accommodate the construction workThe Guilden Sutton access is looking good, and from Mickle Trafford access fi ne views of the hills across to Delamere and Kelsall. The bridge work is looking smart and awaiting precast concrete decking over the full width. The sides will be built up as per Network Rail safety rules. It is stressed that we all be aware the Millennium Greenway is a shared pathway - consideration for other path users is a must. We have all worked so hard to obtain our pathways it follows that we all have a right to use them but responsibly. Friends of Chester Millennium Greenway hold volunteer days do contact the offi ce 01244 343055 (offi ce hours 8 - 4) if you would like details. Please remember there is never an obligation and you stay as long as you wish.

THE WAY AHEADAudrey Hodgkinson, from the Friends of Chester Millennium Greenway, reports on the latest developments on the Hoole pathway

It is stressed that we all be aware the Millennium Greenway is a shared pathway -

Cheshire West and Chester Cllr Eveleigh Moore Dutton said: “I am delighted to express my support for the Greenway as long as I don’t take all the glory for what has been “a perfect example of a grassroots scheme, driven by local people with a vision of a human powered local transport scheme that makes the most of our precious open spaces and the passion of people dedicated to making it come about. The hard work and resilience of individuals (such as Audrey and her many friends) has achieved something that epitomises the best of local English democracy.”

FOLLOWING your passions and dreams can lead to wealth, according to Hoole author Marie-Claire Carlyle.A new book ‘How To Become A Money Magnet’ has been written by Marie-Claire, a

transformational coach, Feng Shui consultant and inspirational speaker.Based in West Street, Hoole, Marie-Claire has spent most of her working life coaching

others to achieve their ambitions and dreams. Marie-Claire said: “The book is based on the “How to become a Money Magnet”

workshop which I developed and ran every month for a year. The workshop delivered immediate positive results in the fi nances of the attendees.“It contains many of the exercises and more, from the original workshop as well as many

real life inspiring case studies.“The book asks people to examine their core beliefs and values around money, and to

uncover where their beliefs about money may have been limiting them.“Being a Money Magnet is actually less about the money and more about the passion of

following hearts’ dreams. When people are true to their desires and dare to give their true value to the world, money becomes a natural by-product of that offering. That’s why the cover of the book features a heart rather than a wad of banknotes.”Marie-Claire added: “Five years ago I was working as sales director for a software

company. I earned a large salary, lived in a penthouse, and drove a Mercedes convertible. But, something was missing. I’d spent my whole life chasing a dream only to feel that I’d missed a turning along the way. Today I own my own destiny. I have found an inner peace and an outer radiance. I love what I do and I am passionate about helping others fi nd their peace and passions in life.” Find out more at www.marieclairecarlyle.com

LATE SUMMER IN YOUR GARDENGardening by Janet Heath

SEPTEMBER often provides a blaze of colour before autumn takes hold so if you like bright, bold colours there is a wide range of fl owers to choose from. Shrubs such as Hibiscus syriacus also known as the tree hollyhock because of the shape of their

fl owers, are hardy shrubs with fl owers in white, pink and blue. They fl ower for weeks in autumn. Perovskia Blue Spire is a small shrub with branches of tiny electric blue fl owers. It likes a well-drained soil in sun and provides colour well into autumn. Bright, bold colours for a damp soil why not try Rudbekia fulgida Goldsturm in yellow and

pair it with Lobelia cardinalis with its purple leaved foliage and red fl owers. Heleniums come in a range of red, yellow, orange and russet colours, are good for the back of a border and give colour for a few weeks especially if dead-headed. Japanese anemones are great ground cover with tall or shorter fl owering stems in white or pink. They also fl ower for weeks, well into autumn. Some delphiniums will fl ower again in September if their fi rst fl ush of fl owers were removed after fl owering. You can dig up and split perennials in autumn and as the soil is still warm they should settle in

well before winter. Try to remember to plant daffodils in September (tulips can wait until October) for fl owering next year. Lawn repairs can be carried out in September. If you have bare patches in the lawn or want to

sow a new lawn, September is a good time for sowing grass seed or laying turf. Scarify to remove moss and apply a weed killer to control those tough perennial weeds. Hedges can have their fi nal trim of the year to leave them neat and tidy over winter. Autumn ripening raspberries such as Autumn Bliss and blackberries will now be in season and

taste wonderful. Some early season apples will be ripening so if you want to grow your own dessert apples, consider Egremont Russet, Fiesta, Katy or Greensleeves. They will be ready to eat in September but will not keep for very long, so just pick them from the tree!
