Remember all of our deceased loved ones in your prayers
Dear Brothers and Sisters,
John the Baptist and Us
There are two very significant and well-known personalities
connected to the life and mission of Jesus Christ. At the
beginning, we have John the Baptist, and towards the end we have
Judas Iscariot, both playing unforgettable roles. At this time of the
liturgical year, the heralding mission of the Baptist takes center
stage, and it is one we all are called to emulate for ourselves as
well as for others.
“St. John the Baptist is the Lord’s immediate precursor or
forerunner, sent to prepare his way. ‘Prophet of the Most High’,
John surpasses all the prophets, of whom he is the last. He
inaugurates the Gospel, already from his mother’s womb
welcomes the coming of Christ, and rejoices in being ‘the friend of
the bridegroom’, whom he points out as ‘the Lamb of God, who
takes away the sin of the world’. Going before Jesus ‘in the spirit
and power of Elijah’, John bears witness to Christ in his preaching,
by his Baptism of conversion, and through his martyrdom.”
(CCC, 523)
While we may never have to face martyrdom as the Baptist did, the
season of advent is a very opportune time to bear witness as he
did. As we send cards and gifts to family and friends, are we
conscious of sending messages of religious significance, or are
they mostly secular in nature devoid of the real meaning of the
forthcoming celebration? Experience at this time of the year
reveals that it is becoming a little more difficult to find cards with
the Christian message we want to share, but they are still
available. Some amount of searching though is required. Doing
that becomes part of the witnessing process during this season.
“When the Church celebrates the liturgy of Advent each year,
she makes present this ancient expectancy of the Messiah, for by
sharing in the long preparation for the Savior’s first coming, the
faithful renew their ardent desire for his second coming. By
celebrating the precursor’s birth and martyrdom, the Church
unites herself to his desire: ‘He must increase, but I must
decrease.’ (CCC, 524)
“The coming of God’s Son to earth is an event of such immensity
that God willed to prepare for it over centuries. He makes
everything converge on Christ: all the rituals and sacrifices, figures
and symbols of the ‘First Covenant’. He announces him through
the mouths of the prophets who succeeded one another in Israel.
Moreover, he awakens in the hearts of the pagans a dim
expectation of this coming.” (CCC, 522)
Have a blessed Second Week of Advent everyone!

Preparing the Way, Finding the Way
Advent is a season when you feel either "into
it" or not. There doesn't seem to be any
middle ground. We are continually being
told to prepare the way, which is right and
good. However, we also need to find the way,
the right way: There are a lot of distractions
out there: gift buying, parties, card lists,
cookies. Ironically if they are viewed
properly some of these distractions can also
remind us of the true meaning of Advent,
bringing our hearts closer to God. The
readings on this Second Sunday of Advent
encourage us to that God truly desires us to
"find the right way" and that He is there to
help. If we rely on God, keeping Him close in
prayer and thoughts, each Advent day will
prepare the right way for Jesus our King.
The "way" not to a sanctuary or a Christmas
liturgy, but the way directly to our hearts.
You may continue to buy or sell tickets
even after the drawings begin. There
will still be plenty of chances to win.
Thanks to everyone who sold and
bought tickets. It’s greatly appreciated.

Most Joyous Preparation
There is a joy in willing preparation, that
is undiminished no matter how small or
simple the actual event that follows. We
happily sweep a room for a
houseguest. We lay a clean table for a
family dinner. Imagine the added joy to be
found in Advent preparations, that are
followed by the Incarnation of God Himself!

A condition of entering the Kingdom is for us to become a child. For this to happen, we must humble ourselves and
become “children of God.” It is only when Christ is formed and present within each of us that the mystery of
Christmas can be fulfilled. (CCC# 526)
Una condición para entrar en el Reino es que nos convirtamos en niños. Para que esto suceda, debemos humillarnos
y convertirnos en “hijos de Dios”. Solo cuando Cristo se forma y está presente dentro de cada uno de nosotros, se
