A huge thank you to all the people who came together as our Parish Community on the occasion of Bishop Peter‟s official visitation to our Parish. The volunteers who helped and the enthusiasm and cooperation of the many parish groups who met with him really showed the spirit that is alive and well in The Entrance. Thank You!

A huge thank you to all the people who came together as our Parish Community on the occasion of Bishop Peter‟s official visitation to our Parish.

The volunteers who helped and the enthusiasm and cooperation of the many parish groups who met with him really showed the spirit that is alive and well in The Entrance.

Bishop Peter will be with us again this weekend to celebrate the great Sacrament of Confirmation for our young people. They are the hope of our future, and with such wonderful examples of faith that have gone before them we can truly look forward to the future with real trust. Consecrated Life - A Legacy in Catholic Education

schools, one is the only religious primary principal in the Sydney Archdiocese.

If you looked at a school staff photo of the 1920s to 1960s you might see nine teach-ers, all religious, these teaching a school of 400 students or more. Today, in a col-lege of 700 students and a staff, both teaching and ancillary, of eighty, you may or may not see one brother or sister.

In a way it has gone back to the way it was with most Catholic schools under the care of lay people. And that is surely the way it is meant to be. The sisters and brothers were there to fill the gap for close to one hundred years when it was needed in New South Wales and Australia. With the resources available to schools today, with the training received by teachers and ancillary staff, schools are places of great energy and spirit, direction and purpose. While the sisters and brothers have moved on, the women and men of our Catholic schools have taken the baton to teach and share the faith with both hands and with both heart and mind. In what we now call our Patrician-linked colleges of Sydney, the Patrician mission, spirituality, and charism, live on. But not only do they live on, in so many ways they are better celebrated and proclaimed. I know it is the same in all schools which were once Marist or Mercy, Josephite or De La Salle, Christian or Charity, ….

In this Year of Consecrated Life it is good to have some awareness of how many thousands of religious priests, sisters, and brothers, have contributed to the Catholic story in Australia. Here I have only mentioned a sample of those involved in the ministry of education, but in so many other very important ways has consecrat-ed life been integral to the well-being of our Church and our society.

If you would like to hear more we could do it at a twilight session, maybe in late October. Let Br Stephen know at 4332 4148 or stephensweetman@ patricianbrothers.com.

You may be surprised to know that we Patricians only ever owned one of the schools we established: Holy Cross College, Ryde. All the schools in country NSW, inner-Sydney, and the western suburbs, belonged to their respective dioceses. And in most cases not only did the schools belong to the diocese but also the monasteries the brothers called home.

It was not until the very late 1960s and early 70s that government money began to trickle back into non-government schools, and “trickle” is the operative word there. With this money the brothers and sisters could begin to build a few classrooms – just a few – and buy some desks and hire a few lay teachers to help them cope with the number of children needing a Catholic education, especially in the western suburbs of Sydney. Some brothers – and sisters – were teaching classes of one hundred and more. When I was in 3

rd and

4th Class at Patrician Brothers Liverpool in

the early 1960s I was just one of close to seventy wall-to-wall students. Roll call took forever, poor young Brother Senanus new to teaching and new to Australia had his hands full. But we survived and we learnt.

We Patricians reached our peak in the early 70s with around seventy brothers in Sydney and a few in Papua New Guinea. Of course we were small-fry in comparison to the Christian, Marist, and De La Salle Brothers: they were many hundreds, and the sisters many thousands.

By the late 1970s fewer and fewer young men and women were entering priesthood or religious life in the western world – how-ever, we Patricians were and are doing very well in India, Kenya, and Papua New Guinea. Over the years it became harder and harder to have brothers in our Patrician schools, and then it became harder and harder to have brothers as prin-cipals. By mid 2005 none of the Sydney schools founded by the Patrician Brothers had a brother as principal. Today we only have two brothers ministering full-time in

Secular Franciscans

Who is St Francis of Assisi? What is his message for us today? What can we learn from this beautiful, humble, holy and simple man of God?

Francis was born about 1182 and was named John when his father, Pietro Bernadone, was away in France buying new cloth for his store in Assisi. But when Pietro returned, he immediately changed the boy‟s name to Francesco (the French-man). As a youth, Francis was a fun-loving active boy who was very popular amongst the youth of the town. He was very ambi-tious and wanted to impress the girls by becoming a knight. His father was delight-ed with his son and gave him everything he wanted. Francis went to war in 1202 but ended up in a dungeon, a prisoner of war. About a year later his father paid the ransom for the release of his son who was seriously ill. Two years later Francis had

recovered and decided to seek a knight-hood by going to war again. It was at this time that God intervened and challenged him by saying, „Who is it better to serve? The servant or the master?‟ So Francis returned home as he was directed by a vision. In the spring of 1205 Jesus spoke to him again, „Go, repair my house which, as you see, if falling into ruin.‟ Francis soon realised it was the spiritual Church that needed rebuilding and this became his mission. He was soon joined by local youth who admired him, thus the Francis-can movement began.

If you wish to enquire or are curious about our simple way of life please feel free to contact Lui and Georgette Bruni of the Secular Franciscans here at The Entrance parish on 4388 9510.
