Dear Holy Rosary Congregants and Friends, I hear it sometimes “I felt very welcome here” or “I enjoyed your hospitality”. For two years the Synod initiatives of the Archdiocese of Milwaukee have encouraged the Parish Churches in the Archdiocese of Milwaukee to practice hospitality. It seems like such a simple thing to do: smile at people, shake hands, welcome newcomers, ask an individual his or her name, say things like “I’m glad you are here.” With that challenge we have been doing several things here at Holy Rosary to grow hospitality among us:

A greeting before Mass by one of our Lectors who says “welcome,”

I always say “I’m glad you are here” before I begin my sermon – and I really am glad you are here,

Greeters before Mass. Awesome folk who stand outside the Church, open the doors and say “welcome to Holy Rosary”,

Occasionally an invitation to stand and introduce yourself before Mass begins,

For people who join our church – an interview with me to share our parish experiences,

Introducing new members in the bulletin,

Leadership and initiatives through the Hospitality Committee and the Stewardship Commission.

Might I ask us all to do similar things. People might visit a church because it is nearby, or it has good music, or they like the preaching, or there are good events. People join a Church because they feel welcome. God welcomes us, we welcome each other.
