Pastor’s CornerLast Sunday in our reflection we men-tioned of the Holy Spirit as the greatest weapon of the disciples in their mission of spreading the good news and the mighty acts of God done in Jesus Christ.

Again our gospel this Sunday of the Most Holy Trinity talks about of one of the roles of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit will guide the CHURCH to all truth because He is the spirit of truth. The mission of the CHURCH is the same mission of the Most Holy Trinity as Jesus taught to his disciples “Everything that the Father has is mine; for this reason I told you that he (Holy Spirit) will take from what is mine and declare it you.” The CHURCH needs the presence of the Holy Spirit to help her understand the truth and to be able to proclaim the truth.

The Most Holy Trinity guards us al-ways from our enemies so that we may not turn away from the truth especial-ly when we are attacked by the false teaching against the doctrine of the TRINITY.

May the blessings of the Most Holy Trinity always be with you all. Amen

BACKGROUND OF THE LITURGYThe Most Holy Trinity

The Mystery of the Most Holy Trinity should be the root and center of our entire spiritual life. Longstanding tradition in the Church states that devotion to Our Lady is a sign of a healthy spiritual life. Even so, Mary is not the center of our prayer life or our faith life!

The Mystery of the Trinity is the heart and center. From this mystery comes, first of all, the Incarnation. From the Incarnation comes the redemptive life of Jesus Christ. From the mystery of redemption comes the sacramental life of the Church.

And in the mystery of the Church and the sacraments (especially Eucharist) we have the Communion of Saints and special devotion to Our Lady. But everything is tied together in the Mystery of the Most Holy Trinity. In an attempt to describe what our faith life, our prayer life, our spiritual life should be, we use four prepositions: to, through, in, and with. Let us begin at the outset with true doctrine.

We believe that there is one God in Three Persons, co-equal in majesty. The words of the Athanasian Creed are our expression of profound belief: The Father is eternal, almighty, infinite; so also the Son; so also the Holy Spirit. Yet there, are not three almighties or three eternals or three infinites, but only one almighty, eternal, infinite God.

But the Father is not the Son, and the Son is not the Holy Spirit. From all eternity the Father begets the Son; from all eternity, the Son is born of the Father. From all eternity, the Father and the Son produce the Holy Spirit; from all eternity, the Holy Spirit proceeds from the Father and the Son (or from the Father through the Son).

With such profound and precise theological distinctions, how can the Trinity be the practical basis and root of our spiritual life? Here is where the prepositions come in. Although God is to be adored as God, and although each Person must be adored as God, nevertheless, we attribute origins to the Father.

Our, liturgical prayer is usually addressed to the Father. We consider the Father to be the Creator, the source of life and of every blessing, therefore in our spiritual life, our prayer must be primarily directed to the Father; our personal and private spiritual life should parallel and imitate our liturgical life.

Even though He reveals Himself as “Father” and as “Shepherd” and as one having tender care over us, as the God of loving kindness, still we realize our own situation and we hesitate to come to Him. What is there that we can offer him which is worthy of Him? How can we repay His infinite majesty when we have sinned?

We come to the Father through the Son. From all eternity, the Father modeled us on His Son. And not on the eternal Son as such, but on the eternal Son as He became flesh. According to Pauline thought and the thought of Duns Scotus, the Son would have become incarnate even if there had never been any sin!

From all eternity, we were to be modeled on the incarnate Son who was to come. Jewish theology held (and still holds) that the Torah was the ultimate Word of God. God from all eternity breathed forth His Torah which was his ultimate word, His ultimate self-revelation.

This ultimate word of the Torah was not made known to mankind until Moses, but it was eternal. And it was the model of all creation. All things were made through, unto, and for the Torah.

When Paul became Christian, he did not change his theological framework; he simply changed his doctrine! Whatever he had previously held about the Torah, he now applied to Christ Jesus: He is the ultimate and eternal Word.

Through Him all things were made. From all eternity, God chose us in Him to be His adopted children. He is the first-born of all creation. He is the model, the purpose, and the cause of all creation.

Therefore, if we shrink from approaching the all-holy Father, we come to the Father through Jesus Christ! He came to this earth in order to bring us to the Father. Because of sin, He restored us to the Father’s favor and He gave Himself totally and completely to the Father for our sake. And He joins us to Himself.

Therefore through Him, we have access to the Father. Through Him, we have the forgiveness of our sins. Through Him we offer God a worthy sacrifice of praise, appeasement and thanksgiving.

Jesus is our one Mediator with the Father. He pleads for us at the right hand of the Father. He alone is our Savior.

Our Lady of the Rosary Page 6 Little Italy, San Diego, CA

We find on each page of the New Testament the power that we have in coming to the Father through Jesus Christ, his Son.

Jesus Christ has gone to heaven to prepare a place for us. He is in the Father’s glory to be our Media-tor, Redeemer and Savior. But even he can seem far removed from us: His saving deeds can seem so long ago and far away. Therefore he sent us the Paraclete, the Spirit.

In the Spirit, we are made one with the Lord Jesus Christ. In the Spirit, we are conjoined with all the other members of Christ so that we bear each oth-er’s burdens and carry each other’s sorrows. In the Spirit, we are enabled to live the very life of Jesus Christ while still living in this world.

The Spirit is our advocate, our strength, our defense attorney here on earth. The Spirit enables us to pray when we do not feel like praying. When we are bone-dry, the Spirit within us cries out “Abba, Fa-ther.” The Spirit manifests among us the presence of the Lord Jesus Christ.

In the Spirit, as we said, we are joined with each member of Christ: This includes not only the mem-bers here on earth, but those in heaven. We have in them wonderful examples of the life of Christ. With them we all give glory to God.

The most important member of Christ, of course, is his Mother, the Blessed ever-virgin Mary. She is what we should have been, were it not for sin. She is the sign to us of what we shall be in spite of sin. She is the perfect model of the Christian life. With, her, and with all the saints, in the Holy Spirit, through Jesus Christ, we give glory to our heavenly Father.

Every blessing in turn comes from the Father to us through Jesus Christ in the Holy Spirit. We need to make this mystery the practical basis of every prayer of ours. We cannot have a tormented spiritual life; it is not Christian! We can’t go running to this or that saint, or doing this or that devotion, or saying this or that prayer as if we just “do things.” Rather, our en-tire prayer life must be grounded in and oriented to the mystery of the Trinity. With the above meditation in mind, let us look at the Scriptures today: Our first reading was formerly used in Masses of the Blessed Virgin Mary. In the wisdom literature of the Old Tes-tament, wisdom is often personi fied. True wisdom was thought to be the Torah.

As we have said, the Torah was the ultimate, eternal self-revelation of God. It was God’s eternal word. With the fullness of Christian revelation, we realize that Jesus Christ, not the Torah, is the wisdom of

the Father. He was before all ages, at the Father’s side, when all things were made. In the theology of both Paul and of John, Jesus Christ is the eternal Word, the Wisdom of the Father. He is the model and cause of all creation.

The second reading expresses our Trinitarian spirit-uality: We have access to the Father through Jesus Christ. We share his life, and therefore experience afflictions. These afflictions help us to mature in faith and hope. Our hope is fulfilled because the Holy Spirit has been poured out into our hearts.

The gospel speaks of the return of Jesus to the glory of the Father. But in Jesus’ name, the Father will send the Spirit to guide us into all truth. The Spirit will confirm the Church in truth. This is one of the great passages which give us assurance that the Church must always teach truth and can, never teach error.

This may give us another insight on our relationship with the persons of the Trinity: As the Son is the full-ness of the Father, so the Church is the fullness of Christ because of the Holy Spirit. Christ manifested the truth of the Father; now that he returns to the Father, the Church will manifest the truth of Christ because of the Holy Spirit.

Let us rejoice in the guidance of the Holy Spirit in the Church. Let us renew our dedication to the in-fallible teaching authority of the Church. And let us ground our lives in the mystery of the Trinity: Give glory to the Father through the Son in the Holy Spirit with the Blessed Virgin Mary and all the saints!

Please, Come to Church Dressed Appropriately! To be modestly and tastefully dressed is a sign of respect for God, for our selves, and for others. It’s a false assumption that God does not care how we dress. Jesus told us, “Whatever you do to the least of my brothers, you do it to me.” If our attire is indecently provocative (short shorts, strapless, backless, spaghetti strap dresses/tops, or displaying cleavage), displaying unwholesome graphics (skulls, advertisements, scantly clad people) or tattered, it becomes offensive to our brothers and sisters who are worshipping the Lord and therefore offensive to God’s Majesty. Ask this question: “Would you dress this way before God?” You are! He sees everything and you are in His house.
