Oremus pro invicem. “Let us pray for each other.”

Father Edward C. Hathaway

SUPPORT CHRISTIANS IN THE HOLY LAND This weekend there is a display of beautiful, handmade, olive-wood carvings from the Holy Land in front of the Basilica following

our Masses. The carvings are made by the Christians of Bethlehem who use them as their source of income. These brothers and sisters of ours are enduring great hardships due to the volatile situation in their home coun-try. Christians used to be more than 37 percent of the population in the Holy Land. Today, they are less than 1 percent because of the ongoing unrest. As Christians of faith, it is our duty to support our brothers and sisters in Bethlehem. Support them by purchasing their beautiful carvings. Thank you!

BASILICA OF ST. MARY STAFF

Last year’s Palm Sunday palms may be placed in the baskets at the back of the Basilica.

A HOOLEY THANK YOU! Thank you so much to everyone who made our 4th annual St. Patrick’s Hooley last Saturday such a big suc-cess. My thanks to all who attended, helping us raise more than $8,000 to support the good work of Christ House. We were especially honored to welcome Bishop Burbidge back to the Hooley for the third year in a row! Three cheers for the Ancient Order of Hibernians and those other volunteers who helped with Hooley logistics. Our generous sponsors included Joan Shannon/McEnearney Associates, CCS Fundraising, Tech Painting Company, M3T Corporation, Faith Direct, Liturgical Arts Studio, the Cotnoir and Florenzo Families, Helen and George Lynch, and the Donnelly Family. Many thanks also to Irish Musician Pat Garvey, the Boyle School of Irish Dance and Murphy’s Irish Pub, and to Alex Solsma and Trish Weiler of our parish staff for coordinating many of the details.

ST. PATRICK While March 17 is traditionally celebrated in honor of St. Patrick, his feast is not on the liturgical calendar this year because it falls on a Sunday. Yet, we can still be inspired by this great 4th and 5th century evangelizer. He not only converted Ireland but, through Ireland, saved much of western civilization. Helping us remember St. Patrick will be Irish tenor Mark Forrest, who will present his prayerful “ Come Walk With Me” program later today, Sunday, March 17, at 7 p.m. in the Basilica. The Blessed Sacrament will be exposed as Mr. Forrest takes us through an evening of music, reflection and healing. A reception will follow in the Lyceum auditorium. You, your family and friends are invited for an inspiring Lenten evening.

SOLEMNITY OF ST. JOSEPH & PAPAL ANNIVERSARY

Tuesday, March 19, is the Solemnity of St. Joseph, Spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary and foster father of Jesus. Because it is a Solemnity, we are dispensed from our penitential Lenten practices that day. March 19 also is the anniversary of the inauguration of Pope Francis in 2013. To make clear the particular bond of commun-ion uniting our basilica with the Roman cathedra or chair of Peter, every year we are required to celebrate “with particular care” certain dates, including the anniversary of the Pope’s election or inauguration. We will mark the occasion here at the Basilica of St. Mary with Mass at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, March 19. I hope you will join us.

INTRODUCING BROTHER LUKE (You may have seen Brother Luke at Mass here at the Basilica in recent months. We are blessed to have him here teaching RCIA classes and speaking with our CCD children. Please keep him, and all men in formation as our future priests, in your prayers.) My name is Brother Luke Mary VanBerkum, O.P., and I am a Dominican friar studying for the priesthood at our seminary in Northeast Washington, DC. I grew up in Michigan with my younger sisters and my older brother, who is also a Dominican and my first introduction to the way of life of the Order of Preachers (the official name for the Dominicans). The religious life of a Dominican friar is one of study, prayer and fraternity, all undertaken to nour-ish our particular charism of preaching for the salvation souls. Thank you for your prayers!

VIRGINIA MARCH FOR LIFE The March for Life is coming to Virginia on April 3 in Richmond! Virginia is facing a pivotal moment in our Commonwealth’s history. Legislation like that seen in New York is being considered in Virginia. Bills were filed this year that would have removed most restrictions on late-term abortions and would have made abortion a “fundamental right.” Governor Northam endorsed this extreme pro-abortion legislation. Thankfully, the anti-life legislation failed this year. It is critical that every pro-life Virginian take a stand for life at the March. Join the Vir-ginia Catholic Conference network to receive Virginia March for Life updates and visit the website for more in-formation at www.vacatholic.org.

From March 6 to April 14, the Basilica of St. Mary is participating in 40 Days for Life. Through prayer,

fasting and local outreach, we pray for an end to abortion and respect for all life, from conception to natural death.

Prayer vigils are being held from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Annandale Women & Family Center,

2839 Duke Street in Alexandria. The Basilica of St. Mary is responsible for filling

shifts on March 22 and April 6. You can sign up for a prayer time at https://stmaryoldtown.org/

apostolate/pro-life-activities/ If you are uncomfortable praying by yourself, you can show up at the following times since

they are guaranteed to have other people in attendance:

March 22: 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. and April 6: 9:15 to 11 a.m.

From Your ST. VINCENT de PAUL SOCIETY Our Lady’s Lenten miracles. On Ash Wednesday, Our Lady guided two of our volunteers to a loving, strong, single mom named Miriam, Our Lady’s name in the Mid-dle East. Miriam had a smiling, radiant young daughter tucked at her side and a babe silently sleeping. In be-tween jobs, she had fallen behind in her bill paying, but was excited at the prospect of a new low-wage but steady job at Pentagon City. While one of us taught her

daughter to write new words, the other counseled Miriam as we worked with part-ner charities to cover all her bills. Miriam sees a promising future for her daughters. So do we. As a mom, she is indeed a “Madonna of Alexandria,” with heavy bur-dens but unbounded love. Help us help

her and others this Lenten Season. For further infor-mation, contact Jim Larocco at [email protected].

asked to support this appeal to the extent they are able. The BLA funds many programs, services and ministries serving people in need and furthers the

Gospel mission of Jesus Christ in our diocese. If you haven’t already made your BLA pledge, please go to:

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS SPRING FOOD DRIVE The St. Lucy Project is a food pantry and delivery network of the Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Arlington (CCDA) striving to achieve a diocese without hunger — one county, one neighborhood, one parish, one family at a time. The many Arlington Knights of Columbus Councils and parish vol-unteers are a main reason this is now a major program. Please support the Spring Food Drive by

picking up your St. Lucy food bag after Mass the weekend of March 24, fill the bag with the goods listed below, and return the bag for collection at Mass the weekend of March 31. Thank you for your generosity!!!

Checks made out to CCDA and gift cards from WalMart, Giant and Aldi are also welcomed.

• Canned Meat/Fish • Canned Vegetables • Peanut Butter & Jelly • Cereals, Hot & Cold

• Canned Fruit • Rice & Grains • Pasta Sauce & Pasta • Children's Snacks

• Soups & Baking Items • Dried & Canned Beans • Juice • Quarts of Shelf-Stable Milk
