History Aabenraa and the border district towards south were once part of the duchy of Schleswig – the area from the Kongeåen stream in the north to Ejderen in the south – which belonged to the Kingdom of Denmark. After centuries of fighting over Schleswig’s nationality, the current border was set in 1920 on the basis of a referendum. The border was set north of Flensburg and south of Tønder. Schleswig – thus southern Jutland – has had a very turbulent existence, which has impact-ed on the area’s history, culture, and population. In Aabenraa and the border district you will therefore see numerous war graves and monu-ments in parks and along the roads which tell the story of earlier times’ animosity like an open his-tory book.

Two cultures A journey to southern Jutland and the border district is a meeting between the cultures of two nations that have been at war for several years. The hatchet have been buried now and the efforts to maintain each their cultural heritage are being respected mutually which is why you find both Danish and German schools, kindergardens, libraries, and associations.

The historical background, the inter-communication across the border, and the fact that you can receive both Danish and German television channels means that the locals are bilingual - and quite a few of them master English too.

"Mojn"Today the majority is Danish, but there is a Ger-man-minded minority who live alongside the Danes. Time has healed all wounds and the culture in the border district has become worth a study in international conflict resolution. The ex-pression ‘Mojn’ is about solidarity with the Ger-mans as it is in fact German for hello, but the peo-ple of southern Jutland have adopted it and use as a greeting at all times. At the same time they are very proud of their dialect which can be almost im-possible for other Danes to understand. The dialect symbolises the locals’ pride of belonging to south-ern Jutland and its history.

the Gendarmstien path from Kruså to Sønderborg along the border and learn about the border gendarmes from 1838, and find the bor-der stones which have sight lines at the top that set the precise bor-der. You can also move forward in times and visit Oldemorstoft or the Frøslevlejren Camp Museum. Another possibility is to follow the Grænseruten route – an interesting cycle route which crosses the Danish/ German border 13 times, and follow the footsteps of the smugglers who dared to smuggle goods over the border. Following World War II it was particularly food that was smuggled from Den-mark to Germany and after that it was cheap booze that crossed the border the other way around. At the Mechanical Museum you can experience a great collection of vintage cars, tractors and miniature editions of old farm machinery. From Sønderhav by Flensburg fjord you can catch a ferry to the Okseøerne Islands, during the summer season, where Queen Margrethe I is buried according to the legend.

At Aabenraa museum you can get to know about the shipping histo-ry, from Aabenraa to the West Indies Islands, and about Jørgen Bruhn’s shipyard on Kalvø island which was the largest in Denmark from the mid 19th century. In Frøslev plantation, by Kruså Tunneldal in Smedeby, and in Hjelm forest, you find exciting nature playgrounds which are created from natural materials. Exercise is healthy and on a track cycle it is fun too! Pack a picnic basket and follow the old train tracks from Aabenraa to Ulvekule on an old-fashioned track cycle. In the summer half, guides tell you about the nature, wildlife and the history, spiced up with amusing anecdotes, on the guided strolls and city walks in the border district and Aabenraa town. An evening tour with the night watchmen gives you an amusing and interesting insight into the town’s history.

The three mackerels in Aabenraa municipality’s town arms bear witness to a fishing village which in the 1700-1800s developed into a shipping town. Aaben-raa ships sailed all over the world and brought home some distinctive customs and riches particularly from

the East. This can, among other things, be detected on the town’s many, beautiful houses from the period between 1730- 1800 as well as on the big captain manors on the peninsula of Løjt Land and at the shipping museum in Aabenraa.

The Old TownThe old town is situated on an incline around St. Nicolai’s Church which was dedicated to the seafarers’ saint. In the period between 1830 and 1878 the town was characterised by ship building and in 1857 Aabenraa had no less than six shipyards. This golden age ceased abruptly though as the steamship arrived. In 1900 Aabenraa became a centre for trade and other services at the same time as an urbanisation took place. The city centre around the long pedestrian street is today still a centre for retail and service businesses.

Aabenraa’s streets and houses are still characterised by the culture and way of life during these periods in time, and in the town’s small side streets you will find examples of old, well-preserved houses and cobblestone streets. Behind St. Nicolai’s Church is the Watchman Square where you find two of the old crooked houses with gables; ‘The blind donkey’ and ‘The Tresuren’. Nearby in Søndergade street you find the old Postmaster’s Manor that was erected in 1758 for postmaster, Herman Daniel Linde. The building which is one of Aabenraa’s finest rococo houses was listed as early as 1921.

Mrs. Beyers GardenEye specialist Mr. Beyer bought the house in 1930 and landscaped the gardens in 1933, and it has remained almost intact ever since. Mr. and Mrs. Beyer had the German landscape architect, Hans Kayser from Heidelberg design the gardens during one of his stays in Aabenraa. To ensure homogeneity between the manor and the gardens, the gardens too became protected by law in1982 following a request from Mrs. Beyer.

Hjelm Skov forest and the king’s mound. In Hjelm Skov there is a little mound by the Hesselbækken brook where Valdemar Sejr sailed to on his way to Urnehoved Tingsted following the Estland Raid in 1219. The people who had gath-ered here could - for the first time - see the Danish flag that had allegedly fallen down from the sky. A brochure over the forests in the Aabenraa area can be ob-tained from the tourist offices.

There exist several different stories about how ‘The blind donkey’ house got its name 1. Once an old greengrocer lived in the house who sold his vegetables from a car-riage drawn by a blind donkey that was stabled in the back building.2. In the old days the house’s windows had arched glass which allowed you to look out from the inside, but not in from the out-side. Trying to look in from the outside was like looking into a donkey’s eye.3. The third story – probably the true one – refers to the location of the house. The house is situated by the entrance to the virgin alley, where the ‘naughty’ girls in town used to live. The owner of the house thus had to turn a blind eye when the girls had visitors.

Virgin FannyAccording to legend, she was the illegiti-mate daughter of crown prince Christian Frederik (later Christian the 8th) and his first wife princess Charlotte Frederikke of Mecklenburg- Schwerin. The little girl was born in 1805 and in her infancy she was brought to Aabenraa where she was put under the care of the council’s chief ad-ministrative officer and later sent to school at Brundlund Castle. She went on to lead an isolated life in poor circum-stances. Virgin Fanny became clairvoyant after at serious illness at 27 and she could thus look into the future. She predicted, among other things, the war in 1864 and that the Danish population in southern Jutland would become Danish again. She died in 1881 and was buried at the cemetery in Aabenraa.

Brundlund CastleIn one of the town’s many green oases you find Brundlund Castle which was built by Queen Margrethe I as a fortress in the beginning of the 14th century. Royals and dukes have resided in the castle and it has housed state administration offices, but today it is the art museum of Aabenraa’s municipality with free entry for the public. The castle gardens can be used for walks, playing, relaxing, and picnics. The watermill was built as part of the defence of the embank-ment which took you through the moat to Brundlund Castle. Thanks to some very capable town planners a preservation plan for Aabenraa has ensured the town’s old milieu alongside new developments.

Hjelm GardensAabenraa most probably has the oldest allotments in the world – the Hjelm Haverne allotments – which were landscaped after the Napoleon wars had racked. It was the poverty in the wake of the wars that led Schleswig and Holsten’s vicegerent, count Carl of Hessen to send out a letter to the town governments about the healthy aspects of creating allotments for the poor so they could grow their own vegetables such as cabbage and potatoes.

PadborgIn 1920 new border crossings and railway stations were constructedOne of the railway stations was built in Padborg which is just on theborder to Germany, and it is still the last railway station in Denmarkbefore you reach Germany. Today the town has a busy business lifearound Torvecenteret in the town centre.

Padborg is one of Denmark’s biggest centres for transport andfreight forwarding and employs around 3,000 people in the sector.Just outside town you find the motoring track ‘Padborg Park,’ whichhas the largest centre for advanced driving in Denmark. The Gen-darmstien path starts by Padborg and ends by Høruphav on the is-land of Als, and the Hærvejen military road (Oksevejen) crosses the border by Padborg. Just outside Padborg you find the Frøslevlejren Camp, which today is a national memorial park containing the Frøslevlejrens Museum and other museums telling the story of World War 2 and the Danish fight for freedom in 1940-1945.

Kruså Another of the municipality’s large border crossings – the town ofKruså – is much used by the locals on both sides of the border.Right by the main road the Kruså tourist office is located and is oftenreferred to as Denmark’s reception. Kruså’s golden days as bordertown ended with the ‘Schengen agreement’ though.

Fjordvejen and KollundOn the beautiful coastal stretch along Flensburg Fjord you find thetown of Kollund. The town is surrounded by the fjord and forests andthere many opportunities for hiking and cycling tours. On the child-friendly beach ‘Lille Strand’ you can jump safely in thewater from the pier which local volunteers from the fire brigade putup every summer.

Through many years Kollund has been known as a starting point forsailing on the fjord and a great atmosphere of summer. The popula-tion increases ten times during summer as the tourists fill the camp-ing sites and holiday homes.

The modern church is placed right in the centre of town - an unor-thodox but beautiful building – designed by the architect Karsten Rønnow. One of the area’s most famous hotels and restaurants,‘Fakkelgaarden’ lies in all its splendour with all its rooms and exclusive tower restaurant overlooking the fjord.

In striking contrast to the flat scenery surroundings, the peninsular of Løjt Land – north of Aabenraa fjord – consists of dense, steep and fertile moraine hills.Together with a range of nice and child-friendly beaches, these characteristics have made Løjt Land a very popular holiday area with beautiful holiday homes and great camping sites, Løjt Holiday Centre and Aabenraa golf course.

In the northern part of Løjt Land you find Rundemølle mill, which is one of the old and famous southern Jutland water mills. Another interesting mill on Løjt Land is Stenbjerg Vandmølle water mill which was established in 1836 by Jørgen Bruhn. The current mill house was beautifully reconstructed in 1988 and today the gourmet restaurant and hotel “Æ Knapp” are located in the builduings.

Not far from the Holiday Centre a small ferry takes you to Lillebælt’s most beautiful island,Barsø. According to the legend, a nasty and belligerent Viking chief by the name of ‘Bars’ lived on the island during the Viking period, which is how the island got its name. It is reckoned that the island has been inhabited since antiquity. The island has kept its gravel roads, hedges and farm grounds that give it a more traditional look compared to the peninsular of Løjt. The slightly curvy and hilly roads offer gorgeous views of the fields and the spread-out farms down the coast to Sønderballe Hoved, Genner Bugt and Løjt Land.

In the Gennerbugten bay you find Kalvø island, which is an extraordinary, beautifully located little island. The island was bought in 1848 by Aabenraa’s shipping tycoon, Jørgen Bruhn. By its natural harbour he found a good spot on which to build his own shipyard. Here he built some of the biggest trade ships at the time - ‘the clippers’ - that went to South America and China. The shipyard plant was taken down when it closed in 1870, but the amazing shipping history is now told at a small museum on the grounds. A little hiking trail takes you all around Kalvø and at the little Kalvø Badehotel you can enjoy a cup of coffee or a traditional regional dish.

Rødekro & TinglevRødekro has through centuries been an important traffic centre and an enterprising trade town. Previously, it was the ancient transport route, Hærvejen military road, that took everybody to Rødekro. Today it is the motor way and the trains that bring people to this historic town west of Aabenraa. It is Hærvejen which is the basis of Rødekro’s origin. The town emerged long ago around the Hærvejen Kro inn – Røde- kro (Red Inn) – which was the railway town’s characteristic centre. Besides the railway, the town has a cosy town centre with flourishing business. In the area around Rødekro there are quite a few ‘Put & Take’ lakes for the anglers.

Tinglev The original Tinglev – today the western part of town – emerged around Tinglev Church. The church’s earliest parts stems from the time of Valdemar (1157 -1241). The original western part of Tinglev developed around the church while the eastern part emerged by the rail-way which was connected in 1864. The connection resulted in a big rise in the population of Tinglev. Lots of the houses in Tinglev are characterized by the contemporary architecture. If you go for a walk down the Hovedgaden in Tinglev you see the houses from before the turn of century are character-ized by the decorations under and above the roof edge and partly the windows. In Tinglev you also find the beautiful town-forest which is the most western planted beech forest in sandy soil in Den-mark. Canoeing, anglers’ lakes, ecology and farmhouse stays characterises Tinglev, and you also find Tinglev Mose moor here, were footpaths have been established and a tower with a view over the moor has been built. The moor is spread over app. 180 hactars and can be divided into three areas: Nørresø Lake, Søndersø Lake and Højmosen moor.

The Gendarmstien path 74 kilometres of beautiful nature from the town Padborg at the border to Høruphav on Als. The Gen-darmstien path alternates from hill to valley, through forests, along fields and along Flensburg Fjord. If you are on foot, you can cross Skomagerhus – the world’s smallest and most relaxed border crossing. Along the border you will find the Grænsestenene stones, which are marked with sidelines at the top of each stone that set the precise border. The Gendarmstien path is among Denmark’s few coastal hiking paths, and we do not exaggerate when we say that it is one of the most beautiful hiking paths in the country. You will come across historical memorials, varied landscapes, fascinating views and very diverse nature.www.gendarmsti.dk

The border path ’s main subject is the history of the Danish-German border district’s cultural history. The 130 kilometres long bi-cycle path from Flensburg Fjord to the Danish Wadden Sea crosses the historical border on 13 locations. On the idyllic roads along the path you will see marshes, inland dunes, heath and forest - not to mention the Kruså subglacial stream trench. Along the path there are picnic areas with roofed cycle ‘stables’ and 40 information points with maps plus history and anecdotes from the border district. Both the North Sea-Baltic Sea path and the Danish national route 8 can be made shorter and changed in many ways. www.grenzroute.com

The Hærvejen military road is more than 400 kilometres long from Viborg in North of Denmark to the border at Padborg. In the old days the famous cycle and hiking path worked as Jutland’s main road for traveller in ox carts, cattlemen and pious pilgrims, and when the peace was disturbed, it was used by the army. North of Hovslund is the oldest known Danish runic stone, the Hærulf Stone (the 900s). South of Hovslund lies the beautifully restored Damgård Mill from 1867. By Hjordkær lies one of southern Jutland’s most characteristic ancient relics called the Hjulgraven. Urnehoved Memo-rial Park was probably the location of the South Jutland ‘parliament’ in the Middle Ages. Povl’s Bridge over the Bjerndrup Mølleå stream is the oldest of the old stone bridges. In the Middle Ages Kliplev Church was an important place of pilgrimage because of the crucifix St Hjælper (Helper) who was said to have miraculous powers. Søgård was once the largest manor in Schleswig, and the remains of the old mounds are still visible. At the edge of Bommerlund Plantation you will find the Gejlå Bridge from 1818. South of Bov you will find something as unusual as a beautiful stretch of military road called ‘The Curved Road.’ It is the old approach road to Flensburg. www.haervej.dk

Find your moment...

Den Europæiske Landbrugsfond for Udvikling af Landdistrikterne

Danmark og Europa investerer i landdistrikterne

Thousands of years ago, before cars overloaded the streets, and before rail trails connected the bigger cities, Jutlands main road followed the watershed through the country.

Here people of all social classes walked – pilgrims, robbers, tradesmen, cattle drivers with their cattle and kings with their armies. The Army Road was never built. It occurred. From the northern Jutland to the German boarder and further out to the world the wheel tracks twine through the untouched and wild nature.

Explore the Ancient Road HærvejenOn the Army Road you are far away from the everyday life. You move in your own pace, on bike or on foot, through peaceful and many places untouched nature. Here it is calm and you have time. Time to think, feel, be and experience. Here things get simple, the moment magnified – and the small experiences get intense and big.

Pilgrimage in southern JutlandWith the inauguration in 2008 of the 200 kilometres long pilgrimage path across the Danish- German border, yet another stone has been laid that will make up a continuous, accessible pilgrimage path from Scandinavia to Santiago de Compostela in Spain. The pil-grimage path from Vejen in southern Jutland to Rendsburg in Schleswig follows the historical military road that was used by thousands of pilgrims in the Middle Ages when they came from the north and headed towards the south. Today pilgrimages have become fashionable again and old pilgrim age paths have been given new life. Many people take a holiday, walk on foot and take a break from a world that is becoming both busier and more chao-tic. Along the path (with signs) there are 13 pilgrim huts with information boards, tables and benches for a well-deserved rest. If you wish to stay the night, you can use one of the military road hostels on the Danish side of the border.

There are four different routes all of different lengths and point of interests. All routes start at Storetorv, in the city centre of Aabenraa. If you choose the green route/City and culture, you have 2,4 km of movement in the small streets around the Sct. Nicolai Church and the watchman place. The blue route/The Art route takes you through the city of Aabenraa with all its sculptures. If you chose the red route/Nature- and biology route, you get 8,3 km. in the southern part of town with forest and Fjord. Finally there is the black route/Health- and Exercise route which is 11,5 km. On the black route you move around in a more rough landscape in the northern part of town.

On Mountain bike in the forests around AabenraaThe Mountain bike route in Aabenraa can be described as moderate. The route is 8,4 km long and follows one of loveliest and roughest forest areas in the south of Jutland. The route rises about 200 meters and less than 1% of it is paved.

Aabenraa Bjergmarathon Aabenraa Bjergmarathon – a marathon in the hills of AabenraaOn the third Saturday of June, the city center of Aabenraa will be changed into a large sports arena. The marathon is a challenging “hill marathon” with increases up to 15%. Due to the lovely nature around Aabenraa the four distances will bring the participant to either Fjord or forest.

All four routes are marked out and described in a brochure so that you always have the opportunity of being a marathon runner in Aabenraa. www.bjergmarathon.dk

i Aabenraa Kommune

Junggreen Have.

Husk

at nyde udsigten over Aabenraa by, skov og fjord fra Galgebakken - hvor den sidste

hængning fandt sted sidst i 1700-tallet.

Her lig-

forventes færdigt i december 2011.

Sct.

Fun for the whole family in the Summer- and Autum holidays with a lot of exiting activities – from sailing with a kayak on the fjord to maritime activities at the beaches and treasure hunting at the museums.

In the plantation of Frøslev by Smedeby and in Hjelm Forest by Aabenraa you will find exiting natureplaygrounds made of natures own material. In the only barefoot park in Denmark by Klovtoft all your senses will be awaken on the journey around barefoot. If you prefer golfing experiences you will find three of Denmark’s finest golf courses in the area: The golf club of Sønderjylland by Uge, the golf club of Aabenraa by the beautiful Løjt Land with a view over Genner Bugt and the golfcenter by Benniksgaard with a view over Flensborg Fjord.

You can also pack a picnic basket and experience the beautiful nature on track bike from the old train station of Aabenraa to Ulvekule in Søst Forest. Throughout the summer there are many festive events in the Border-land. You can enjoy the traditional Ringridning in Sønderjylland or join

a guided stroll and hear about the Borderland and the fascinating story about the maritime city Aabenraa. A horseback ride, a fishing trip, explorering on foot or by bike the many exiting bike- and hike paths or bring the family to geocaching and find treasures in the Na-ture. Of course you can also enjoy life at the child friendly sandy beaches. When the corn stands tall in late summer it is a challenge for the family to find their way through the corn maize in Uge.

When the weather is for indoor activities you can visit Krusmølle, go for a swim in the swimming bath - have a jousting at the bowling center. You can watch the latest movie at the cinema or enjoy a theater or a concert in Sønderjyllandshallen or other theatres. You can also visit “Den Gamle Smedie” (The Old Forge) and experience how well oldfashioned crafts are produced still in Aabenraa.

When winter- and Christmas spirits sets in the skating rink in Aabenraa offers many

hours of fun. In December the unique Christmas Heart Town situated on the square in Aabenraa offers a jolly time with Christmas cutting, rice pudding, gingerbread and a lot of free activities.

Vacation – time to do all the good things in life

Experience the South Jutland tradiotions such as "Tilting a Ring" or join a guided tour and learn about the

border area or the fascina-ting history of Aabenraa.

The purpose of the nature schools is to give children and adults theopportunity to learn about the nature and achieve the confidentialityof it and thereby get motivated to use, protect and care for the na-ture.The nature schools arrange events and training in nature, withinall kinds of subjects especially for students; but also for institutions, organizations and private. The program will be made after wishes, season and current themes, which nature has to give on that time.A typical visit takes 3 hours, but otherwise can be arranged – and itis very important to wear practical clothes and shoes, because mostof the activities are outside – no matter how the weather is.

Kelstrup Naturskole is situated in the fantastic, scenic and calm surroundings in Kelstrup Plantage about 5. km north of the Da-nish-German border. The nature school is arranged with modern facilities and the newbuildings are constructed in harmony with and in respect for the na-ture.

It offers a large range of adventures, for example teambuilding,theme-trips with mushrooms and schnapps-tours, hunting with bowand arrow, building a cabin, following animals traces, survival tripsand teaching of all the different animals which are in the area.It is also possible to join the night trips, cooking over fire and spen-ding the night in Lavvus, Finnish tents which can be heated with anoven and where up to 12 people can sleep.

Skovlyst Naturskole is in the beautiful surroundings in Årup Skov near Aabenraa. The forest has deep canyons with flowing rivers, idyllic viewpoints and a rich animal- and herbal live. The nature schoolconsists of two lovely thatched roof buildings and a large camp-ground with tippies, fireplaces, totem and much more. The school hasa “satellite” at the island of Kalvø in Genner Bugt. The satellite is being used base for the teathing related to ocean, beach, birds and outdore life.

Aabenraa and the border district are known for their great fishing waters and for their un-spoiled nature. The season lasts all year. Early summer is especially good for garfish and, during winter, you can catch large trouts and cods. The fact that the trout stocks in Aabenraa Fjord and coasts in the area are good is due to the great work done by the Angling and Fishing Association Aabenraa in terms of putting out fish. Together with the association, the tourist offices have prepared a map that shows some of the most obvious places in the fjord for catching fish. See website www.visitaabenraa.dk

South of Aabenraa there are two large lakes – Hostrup Lake and Søgaard Lake. Both lakes have a rich selection of exciting fish species such as pike, zander, perch, bream and eel. Fishing licenses are on sale in the Søgårdlejren. You can also board one of the cutters that organise trips. The great advantage of these trips is that the captain knows where to find the good fishing spots. Usually you need to book in advance and bring your own gear. Please enquire about opportunities in the tourist office.

There are many trout lakes in the area around Aabenraa and the border district. The trout lakes make it easy to begin fishing and the selection is great and varied. You can buy a fishing license by the lakes, and here you do not need the national license. Fishing in a put & take lake is an opportunity to have a fishing adventure together with your children.

Fish, fish & more fishFISHING LICENSE

All anglers /’fishermen’ between 18 and 65 must have a valid fishing license to fish in Danish waters. You must have it before you begin angling/fishing.

Fishing licenses are on sale in the tourist offices, at post offices, in large angling/fishing gear shops and on www.fisketegn.dk.

The right to angle in lakes and streams belongs to the landowners or to private angling associations. Therefore you must – in addition to the compulsory fishing license – have a special license for angling in streams and lakes. The compulsory license is DKK 40 for a one-day license, DKK 130,- for a one-week license and DKK 185,- for a one-year license

The fjord region covering the range of Flensborg Fjord, the waters around Als, Aabenraa Fjord and Genner Bugt, is one of the most popular and diverse sailing area in Europe. The landscape, the many ports and the maritime experience opportunities will provide rich variety and very special holiday memories.

However, the area is not visited only by people who like to bathe. Thousands of yachtsmen consider Aabenraa and Flensburg Fjord to be a true sailing paradise due to the above-mentioned attractions.

In Genner Bay at Løjt Land there are two lovely places where you can moor your boat – respectively Kalvø Harbour and Sandskaer Camp-ing. At the end of Aabenraa’s wonderful fjord you will find the town’s great and beautifully located and well-equipped marina that lies al-most in the middle of town. In Flensburg Fjord there are unique op-portunities for sailing, and you can cross the fjord on one of the ar-ea’s fjord sailing tours.

Beaches, boating & maritime adventuresAabenraa and the border district’s long stretches of coast are a true eldorado for both children and adults with a passion for water; there is bathing, sailing, windsurfing, angling and fishing and lots of other activities. The coast winds along fjords and bays with little idyllic coves and islands and even on a hot summer day you can find a private spot. The beaches are without sudden depths or holes and very child-friendly with clean and inviting water. The great coastal area is very varied and alternates between flat, open and sandy beaches and narrow stone beaches surrounded by hardwood forest where the trees’ crowns provide comfortable lee and shade.

Aabenraa Municipality supports the Blue Flag campaign, which is an international environmental campaign aimed at a cleaner maritime and coastal environment and at strengthening the general safety, service and quality of beaches to the benefit of visitors.

BLUE FLAG BEACHES

• have clean bathing water and inform you about current water quality

• are obliged to take the blue flag down if there is sudden pollution

• have clean toilet facilities and well-maintained buildings

• have rubbish schemes• have life-saving equipment, first aid

boxes and emergency telephones nearby• offers environmental and nature activities• are clean and are inspected regularly

Aabenraa and the border district are rich in art and culture – ‘Culture in Søgaard,’ ‘Open Studio’ and ‘Art Week’ are among the great cultural events that people look forward to in Aabenraa. But a lot of other things to do with art are happening. You can, for in-stance, visit one of the workshops in and around Aabenraa; itit is fas-cinating to see how large and small works of art are created.

You can visit also the Art Museum Brundlund Palace. Here there are changing exhibitions with artists from southern Jutland, contempo-rary art and art history topics. The palace holds also rooms for the C.W. Eckersberg collection and special exhibitions. The great and beautiful palace garden has many impressive sculp-tures. Here you will also find Hans Falck’s house, where there is now a gallery.

In the Banegården Art and Culture – an old, listed railroad station building from 1865 – exhibitions change 7-8 times a year, and there are also various cultural events. Each year there are exhibi-tions such as the Open Exhibition in December and the Censored Exhibition during the Easter month.

Aabenraa and the border district are rich in sculptures, and the wide range of genres, materials and expressions is significant. The visual art council in Aabenraa presents a great selection of sculptures in its sculpture guide. The guide shows how much different art one can find where one moves about in one’s daily life and makes seeing individual sculptures exciting. Each year the tourist office organises several guided sculpture tours where they present you with a selection of Aabenraa’s more than 100 sculptures.

Aabenraa and the border district has a range of museums that tell about the history of ancient times. The museum ‘Cultural History Aabenraa’ was opened in 1887 with rarities from the area and objects to do with the great time of ships and holds a unique collection of shipping objects. Jacob Michelsen’s House also belongs to the museum. The house is open to visitors when the traditional baking weekends take place where bread and other good things are baked in the oven house from 1876. The museum Oldemorstoft in Bov – the South Jutland agricultural museum – holds an exhibition about agriculture during the past 100 years and a small exhibition about the 1920 border.

The Art Museum Brundlund Palace shows changing exhibitions with South Jutland artists such as C.W. Eckersberg, contemporary art and art history topics. There are many historical traces in the palace – for instance a rifle cellar and a dungeon. In the gatehouse you can see the palace’s old prison. The great, beautiful palace garden holds also sculptures and the Art School’s workshops.

The Frøslevlejren camp is today a national memorial park and con-tains various exhibitions and museums about World War Two and the Danish fight for freedom 1940-45, The UN, Amnesty International, the home guard and the history of preparedness.

The Museum of Mechanics in Hokkerup is the family Lansink’s im-pressive collection of vintage tractors, vintage cars, mopeds, horse carriages, farming machines, old tools and toy models.

At “the German School Museum” in Aabenraa you hear the story about the German school system in Aabenraa.

Through 300 years the Flensburg Fjord region has been known for its large production of bricks - lovely situated at the Flensburg Fjord is Cathrinesminde Brickyard Museum, where you can learn about every day life at a brickyard.

South of the border you can also feel the presence of history;Kupfermühle Museum (copper mill museum) tells the story about 400 years copper- and brass industry and in the historical village Unewatt/Angeln you are being taken to a bygone era surrounded by timbered farmhouses, smokeries, dairies and other cultural heritages in a village in the country side.

In the entire border region - both north and south of the border - the history of the border can be experienced closely at one of the many museums, collections and and castles in the region.Read more at www.visitaabenraa.dk

On the occasion of the 150th anniversary you are being told the hi-story about 1864 from Aabenraas point of view. It was here where the Prussians had their head quarter for several months. Both the Danish minded and the German minded were deeply torn in their ex-pectations for the future of duchy of Slesvig and they tried diffe-rently to influence the course of events. But they were not Prussian. Guide: Jan WittrupDkk. 50 per person. Tickets at www.visitsonderjylland.dk

'1864'War is both frightening and fascinating, and the War of 1864 is no exception. The defeat to Prussia meant that Southern part of Denmark came under German rule until the referendum in 1920. In 2014 it was 150 years since the dramatic events took place. It will as well be marked by various events throughout 2015.

Churches in Aabenraa & the border districtIn Aabenraa and the border district you can find a big selection of old village churches from the romanticism and modern churches.

The churches have an exciting history and the modern churches are drawn by established architects. Kliplev church, the old pilgrims church, is housing Denmark’s oldest belfry from about 1300. Kollund church is a modern church from 1971 drawn by Karsten Rønnov and Høje church from 1997 is drawn by Mads Thuesen Møller and the altarpiece by Sven Havsteen-Mikkelsen.

The churches in Aabenraa and the boarder district not only offer you services but also many different kinds of concerts such as organ concerts, gospel and Christmas concerts. The most churches are accessible during the day.

The cemetery in Aabenraa is a joint cemetery for all of the churches in the city. The cemetery has a very exciting history. Learn more about it on a cemetery walk with guide Erling Madsen.

On the many beautiful and well-groomed churchyards, warrior graves with Danish, German, and many other na-tionalities, not only bear witness of the two great wars, but also of the numerous minor battles in the region.

The churchyards of the border district tell us the story of hostility and alliances, of human folly and fortitude.

You can read more about the 22 churches in the municipality in the folder “Kirker I Aabenraa kommune”, which can be found at the tourist office. Read about concerts and other special event in the events’ calendar “Sønderjylland4fun”.

You can find more information about the church services on www.aabenraaprovsti.dk and on churches’ webpages.

They point towards the sky, the church spires. They tell a story about people and faith for almost a thousand years, a history still alive today.

In the churches there are religious services, chris-tenings, weddings, and funerals. People gather in the churches filled with joy and sorrow.

A number of the churches are open during daytime, so you can visit them and see the beautiful rooms, altar-pieces, and baptismal fonts.

Maybe you just need to sit and rest in the coolness of the room and say a prayer.

In southern Jutland we are well-known for our many local dishes – and this also applies to Aabenraa and the border district.

Some of Denmark’s best gourmet restaurants are located in southern Jutland where you can enjoy culinary specialties in top-class. The many royal privileged taverns in the border district offer a lot, from genuine tavern dishes to a la carte with proud southern jutish traditions. Char-acteristic for the many southern jutish restaurants is that the dishes are inspired by southern jutish traditions and local ingredients are being used.

But it is not only the gourmet kitchen that characterises the region. Have you heard about the big southern jutish coffetable with nothing less than 14 different kinds of cake? If you would like to taste the au-thentic south jutish “breadcake”, “goje raj” or “knæpkager” visit one of the regional Coffetable. We promise, you will not neat dinner that day.

You can’t mention Southern Jutland without saying sausage and cab-bage. No tilting at the ring fest without “tilting at the ring sausage”. No Danish “frokost” without a variety of sausage specialties and the known southern jutish salami. Not to mention cabbage. We love our cabbage – southern jutish kale and traditional white cabbage. Also pickled eggs are a well known and loved specialty – many taverns and pubs serve this exceptional specialty.

As something new, you can taste southern Jutland in a new way: Southern Jutish Tapas! With the Southern Jutish Tapas you can try all the delicious dishes in small portions. It’s no secret that food is popular in the southern part of Denmark – and there should always be enough of it.Welcome to an ocean of taste experiences with tradition in the south-ern jutish kitchen.

Crazy about good food?

A well-deserved and enjoyable holiday is also about a nice place to stay. The choice of holiday home is often a question of lifestyle, and it should be a place that you look forward to going back to after an eventful day and a place where you can relax – perhaps in the company of other happy holidaymakers or among the locals, the hospitable people of southern Jutland.

See the many options:• a nice room or a private holiday home• a lovely stay in a hotel in the border district• a hotel in the vicinity• an overnight stay at one of the camping sites in the area• or a stay for the family in one of our Danhostels

Sleep well Sometimes it rains and the weather does not invite to a trip to the

beach. We have listed some activities that do not require sun.

Magic DoughIt only takes 5 minutes to make the dough and all you need is flour, salt, water and a little bit of oil. The garlic press makes great hair. Rolling pins and forms also raise the experience. When the figures are baked, they can be decorates with paint, glimmer and little pearls.

Paintings Find paint brushes, paint and the grand gestures. When the paintings have dried, the can be laminated and used as placemats.

Rings of seashellsA trip to the beach can also provide things to do on a rainy day. Pull the seashells on a string and create beautiful seashell-rings as a lovely memory.

GamesLudo, monopoly and playing cards are also lots of fun for a cozy time.

A trip to the indoor swimming bath, a family-battle in bowling or a visit in the indoor playground Jump A Lot ore the sience parks Universe in Nordborg or Phänomenta in Flensburg. Go see a movie in the cinema – with lots of popcorn and coziness. All things you can do on a rainy day.

Southern Jutland – worth conquering

Are you ready to conquer the most southern part of Denmark?

If you are, we encourage you to learn to say “mojn” – a term used by locals both as hello

and goodbye. In Southern Jutland (Danish: Sønderjylland), we love visitors and we

always greet each other with open arms. This is due to our status as Denmark’s historic

borderland. With its strategically important location, our region has developed a fasci-

nating history and unique culture.

For centuries, Southern Jutland has been a center of conflict between large powers,

resulting in one of the largest naval battles in history, foreign domination and new

demarcation lines between Denmark and Germany. Throughout our turbulent past,

we have thus been heavily influenced by trends and customs from abroad, which is

evident in our dialect and local gastronomy. At the same time, however, we have also

cherished our own culture with its deeply rooted and proud traditions.

– worth conquering

The TASTe of

SouThern JuTlAnD

Don’t expect typical gravy and

potatoes when it comes to

our local dishes.

The local cuisine of Southern

Jutland is truly an experience

for all senses. It includes

spices from all over the world

as well as smoked produce

and sausages made from

scratch. It is a plethora of the

season’s fresh and natural

ingredients. here, bread and

cakes are made from old

recipes following traditional

methods.

So please bring your appe-

tite and promise us that you

won’t eat before arrival.

We might as well admit it:

We would be immensely

proud and thrilled if you

would taste our local dishes.

Southern Jutland has always

been worth conquering - both

in times of war and in times

of peace. Most well-known

are, of course, the many con-

flicts with our neighbour to

the south. however, the truth

is that most of the time, we

have lived together in peace

and harmony.

In Southern Jutland, history

is always present and very

much alive. everywhere you

go, it reveals itself, some-

times quite openly in the

form of beautiful sights:

Stunning castles, cannons

that soldiers have left behind

or rare antiquities. If you open

your eyes, you will discover a

new world where you least

expect it.

Perhaps it is the variation that

Cross-border shopping is a well-known phenomenon in the south Jutland area. Both north and south of the border people drive to the other side to shop. But the area south of the border also offers more than shopping adventures – the whole border district is filled with historical memories.

The old seaport of Flensburg offers great many cultural and maritime experiences. Throughout the summer there are guided city walks, cosy folk parties and regattas by the restored waterfront. You can also enjoy the city and the surrounding areas from the water – join a harbour tour, sail to Glücksburg or around the Danish Okeøerne. In the pedestrian street and the surrounding area, there are quite a few houses that stem from the Danish historical era. Along the wa-terfront you find lots of cafés, restaurants and intimate pubs.

The shipping museum at the exciting waterfront is worth a visit and the adventure centre Phänomenta, the ‘Museum Habour’, the ‘Mu-seum Mountain’ and a experimental playground thrills children and adults alike. In Flensburg the renowned ‘plumping’ beer is brewed and in Decem-ber Flensburg turns into a fantastic Christmas town, which is a unique experience. You can expect a charming experience in the ‘Red Street’ – Flens-burg’s oldest trade street offers you small individual shops, old cosy merchant and craft courtyards with glass blowing and engraving workshop, cafes and restaurants. Here you also find the Vine- and Rumhouse Braash where the city rum history can be relived and vine and rum can be bought.

On the way to Flensburg you find Wassersleben – a small oasis just south of the border that offers a child-friendly beach, a playground and a park with a miniature golf course. Nearby Kobbermølle is an idyllic village with cosy streets and restored workers’ buildings and the Copper Museum.

In the Spa Town of Glücksburg you can explore the details of the roy-al family og which the Danish royal family descends from.Nearby rose lovers can admire one of the most beautiful rose gar-dens in the north in a one hectare garden.

Schleswig is absolutely worth a visit. Here you find the beautiful ca-thedral, Gottorp Slot as well as the Nydamsbåden boat.Very close by you find the Viking Museum, Hedeby, which tells the ferocious story of the viking period. You should also visit the Dan-nevirke museum and the embankment on the way down south. In the idyllic museums village Unewatt you can experience the cul-tural legacy of the historic village and and timbered houses, a smoke house, a dairy and windmill.

Other places to visit south of the border are the concentration camp memorial park in Ladelund, the islands of the tidal flats and the town of Friedrichstadt that is called ‘little Holland’ because of its many ca-nals. And then there is the theme park Tolk- Schau which is perfect for families.
