Sustainability, social responsibility and green jobs

Aside from investing into physical infrastructure and target sectors,

transitioning to a green economy requires a fundamental shift in the way we think and act (United Nations, 2011).

Organizations can and should assure a role in addressing the challenges of sustainable development and thus contribute to moving society towards a sustainable future (Blindheim, 2008). Social Responsibility and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)

Social responsibility as a broader term, Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) pertains to the functioning of organizations (e.g., ISO 26000:2010)

    CSR is defined as

a concept whereby companies [and other organizations] integrate social and environmental concerns in their business operations and in their interaction with their stakeholders on a voluntary basis.

Sustainability, social responsibility and green jobs

In times of crisis, society needs universities capable of providing innovative solutions and opening up new horizons. As Einstein put it, problems cannot be solved by the same level of thinking that created them. Therefore, effective solutions must be sought at a higher level.

Universities play a key role in raising awareness of social responsibility and sustainable development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

Best practices and ideas Green Colleges - The Princeton Review

For seven consecutive years, The Princeton Review has been publishing information on colleges that practice, teach, and support environmentally responsible choices. In the responses to our annual College Hopes & Worries Survey, we have seen a sincere and growing interest among students in identifying and applying to colleges where there is a demonstrated commitment to sustainability.

Since 2009, we have partnered with the U.S. Green Building Council to publish our Guide to Green Colleges annually in April, with the number of schools rising from 286 in the first edition to 332 in the most recent edition. And every year we publish our Green Ratings in The Best Colleges. The seventh annual Green Rating evaluates colleges and universities on their environmentally relevant policies, practices, academic offerings, and career advisement. The result is a numerical score on a scale of 60-99. You will find each college's (861 of them) Green Rating on the Campus Life/Facilities tab of the school's profile.

Changes often begin with the external pressure. When students realize that they can influence the events, the process gets its own internal dynamics.

Idea of partnership and not confrontation is developed.

Students have access to all information (data-indicators) available to the university and the state, and they know how to use it.

Students not only recognize what is bad, but also suggest changes and participate in their implementation.

When the university gathers the students views all the students are addressed not only the student representatives.

Students and employees are trained to cooperate.

Students and staff respect and appreciate each other.

Green or clean is any activity or service that performs at least one of the following: Generating renewable energy Recycling existing materials Energy efficient product manufacturing, construction, installation and maintenance Education, compliance and awareness Natural and sustainable product manufacturing

    Schroeder,2009

UM-introduction UM, sustanibility and social responsiiblity UM, green job and competencies 32

Green jobs are positions in any economic sector (e.g. agriculture, industry, services administration) which contribute to preserving, restoring and enhancing economic quality. Green jobs reduce the environmental impact of enterprises and economic sectors by cutting the consumption on energy, raw materials and water, de-carbonizing the economy and bringing down emissions of greenhouse gases, minimizing or avoiding all forms of waste and pollution and protecting or restoring ecosystems and biodiversity. For the ILO, the concept of green jobs summarizes the transformation of economies, workplaces, enterprises and labour markets into a low-carbon, sustainable economy that provides decent employment opportunities for all. http://www.ilo.org/global/topics/green-jobs/WCMS_214247_EN/lang--en/index.htm

UM, green jobs and competencies: UM Green Study Programmes for Green Jobs

UM can directly contribute to the creating of a qualified green workforce, which has the required professional education (direct pathway to green job) or indirectly through securing general competencies in sustainability (indirect pathway to green job) (Angeles Murga-Menoyo, 2014)

The indirect pathway is likely to be more important because it pertains to a greater portion of students (also from essentially non-green study programs such as social sciences or humanistic studies)

Employability is the perceived ability to attain sustainable employment appropriate to ones qualification level (Rothwell, 2008, p. 2)

Universities have a crucial role in securing student employability

They should secure vocational or job-related knowledge and skills (also in terms of green skills), and mastery of job search (crucial role of career centers at university!)

They should respond to the need of the external labour market

Angeles Murga-Menoyo (2014) suggests that universities should utilize an environmentaly efficient institutional management (which corresponds to changes in organizational culture and CSR; e.g., green campuses) and establish curricular sustainability.

Predvideva se, da bosta rodovitna zemlja in predvsem voda najbolj pomembni in cenjeni e do leta 2050 (Mark Lynas, 60 C)

ZDM kako bi naj bilo Moje mnenje:

zelena delovna mesta, kjer so akterji samozaposleni (to niso ljudje, ki bi bogateli), potrebujejo power of the purse pristop

    Zakljuek
