1 Introduction The purpose of this document is to provide parameters for the installation and configuration of receive equipment for reception of the Europe by Satellite service. Please note that the guide is not intended to be a comprehensive introduction to antenna installation.

2 Orbital Positions The Europe by Satellite service is transmitted from two orbital positions. The use of two orbital positions allows the service to reach a much wider audience as a single orbital position only covers a relatively small portion of the earth’s surface.

2.1 Ku Band Service from 4.8˚E The service is transmitted from 4.8˚E in the Ku band frequency range, providing ideal reception conditions for sites located in Western Europe. The service is provided by the Sirius 2 satellite.

2.2 C Band Service from 319.5˚E The service is also transmitted from 319.5˚E in the C-band. Although the C-band signal can also be received in areas of Western Europe with appropriate reception equipment, this service is primarily targeted at sites which are not covered by the Ku band service at 4.8˚E, namely, the Caribbean region, South America and parts of North America. The service is provided by the NSS-806 satellite. In the guide, the precise coverages offered by each orbital position will be shown in corresponding dish diameter maps. These can be found in Section 4 for the Ku band service, and Section 10 for the C-band service.

3 Important Installation Concepts

3.1 The Azimuth Angle The azimuth angle is the angle, in the horizontal plane, between true north and the satellite. The compass bearing is the angle, in the horizontal plane, between magnetic north and the satellite. Magnetic variation must be added to the compass heading to find the true heading or azimuth.

Figure 1: Azimuth Angle

In Section 5, a table of cities for the European Union is presented which includes the relevant azimuth angle for reception of services from 4.8˚E.

Page 5: Europe by Satellite - European · PDF file3.3 Positioning of the LNB ... • To align the dish, ... expansion for the Europe by Satellite coverage and continuity of service

Europe By Satellite Installer Guide

SES ASTRA Europe By Satellite Page 5 of 17

3.2 The Elevation Angle The elevation angle is the angle between a line from the dish to the satellite and the horizontal.

Figure 2: Elevation Angle

• To align the dish, point it towards an approximate heading and elevation • Connect a suitable meter and set to a known transponder • Sweep slowly left and right across the horizontal • Make small changes to the elevation angle at the end of each sweep • When signal is received, check that the meter identifies the correct satellite

(digital meters and analysers will determine the satellite’s identification from the digital data received)

In Section 5, a table of cities for the European Union is presented which includes the relevant elevation angle for reception of services from 4.8˚E.

3.3 Positioning of the LNB Linear polarisation may be employed to transmit signals aligned either vertically or horizontally, so that a frequency range may be used without interference. Please note that this section is only relevant for the Europe by Satellite Ku band service at 4.8˚E. The C-band service at 319.5˚E does not employ linear polarization, but rather circular polarization, which does not require adjustment of the LNB as described here. The polarity offset is the angle by which a linearly polarised signal is rotated relative to true vertical or horizontal references at the receive site. The Bit Error Rate (BER) is the measure of the quality of a digital transmission, determined from the proportion of the signal received correctly.

Figure 3: Polarisation Tilt Angle

• To align the dish and LNB, find the peak signal in the vertical and horizontal planes. • Check with a spirit level that the dish is horizontally aligned • Check the polarisation offset parameters on the relevant map and check for the correct preset

position number • Turn the LNB so that its index mark aligns with the preset position number on the clamp ring – or

if there is no preset markings, turn the LNB clockwise (as seen with the satellite behind you) from a vertical position to the polarity offset angle

• Adjust the LNB angle, if required, by monitoring the received signal’s BER • Tighten LNB clamp screw(s)

In Section 5, a table of cities for the European Union is presented which includes the relevant polarisation offset angle for reception of the services from 4.8˚E.

Please Note: Please refer to Section 3.3, Figure 3 in order to interpret the sign of the polarization tilt in terms of a clockwise or anticlockwise rotation of the LNB. When facing the dish, a clockwise rotation of the LNB corresponds to a negative sign, with a positive sign corresponding to an anticlockwise rotation.

9 Recommended Dish Diameters for Future Compatibility at 4.8˚E

Future developments at 4.8˚E may lead to a broadening of reception area of the “Europe by Satellite” service in Eastern Europe. However, this may require slightly larger reception antennas in Western Europe than currently required to receive the service. It is recommended that users within the current Sirius 2 footprint use the following diagram as guidance in selection of reception equipment in order to ensure compatibility with future developments at 4.8˚E. If antenna sizes already match or exceed size stated then no upgrade is foreseen.

This contour map displays the antenna elevation angle in degrees required to point to the satellite at 319.5˚E. The contours are in increments of five degrees. Important Note: No polarization offset contours are included for NSS-806 as the beam of interest is circularly polarized. Therefore an antenna equipped with a circularly polarized feed is required to receive these transmissions.
