Jackie BurgessDance Teacher Retiring
Jacqueline Burgess, El Cerrito High School's iconic dance teacher retired last Friday. MissBurgess, as she is af
fectionately called by some and Jackie by the rest of
us, has decided tocall it quits af
ter teaching dance at the school for nearly 37 years. Burgess has adamantlyrefused all ef
forts to honor her w
ith any fanfare; she just w
ants to quietly exit stage right. Butmany members of the "gaucho nation" w
ere stunned as rumors of her imminent departureleaked out. A steady procession of colleagues and former students stopped by to say a personal farew
ell to Jackie. Maya Caspi,a class of 1996 graduate, f
lew in from New
York to say her goodbyes. Maya states, " I just had to see her in personand give her f
low ers." A virtual honor roll of
former students have resorted to using the popular social media netw
orksite, Facebook, to of
fer their personal ref
lections on the impact Burgess has had on their lives.

NEW BEN RUST MUSEUM DISPLAY ITEM
Ben Rust taught many years at El Cerrito High School until he died in 1974 at the ageof 61. The 1965 yearbook w
as dedicated to him. He w
as president of
the CaliforniaFederation of Teachers for seven years before w
hich he w
as president at local andcounty levels. He w
as an educational consultant to the California SenateGovernmental Administration and Eff
iciency Committee and served on many nationaladvisory board in education. He w
as a beloved Gaucho's teacher.
In late Fall 2011, Mr. Rust's daughter, Rebecca Rust, and her husband, FriedirckEdelmann, w
ere in the area giving cello and bassoon concerts. They areprofessional performers living in Germany. They visited the high school's museumand decided to dedicate information about her father.
They w
ill return again in Fall 2012 to see Mr. Rust's museum picture and to perform w
ith the ECHS band. Watch fordetails midsummer about the concert date w
ith guest star, Rebecca Rust on the cello.
