“Pee Mak Phra Khanong” is based on folklore about the ghost of a woman who died in childbirth and the unsuspecting husband who returns from war to live with his family. Past movie adaptations focused more on the lovelorn ghost Mae Nak and her tragic tale, but the new film tells its story through Pee Mak, the

simple-hearted husband, and the friends who try in vain to tell him his wife’s secrets.

With a budget of 35 million baht ($1.1 million), the summer blockbuster has collected 560 million baht ($18.8 mil-lion) in Bangkok and major cities, beat-ing the previous nationwide tally of 550

million baht ($18.47 million US) set by the 2001 historical epic “Suriyothai.”

It also brought a buzz to the movie scene in Thailand, a location haven for recent foreign productions like “Hang-over II,” the low-budget hit “Lost in Thai-land” that unexpectedly became China’s highest-grossing film, and “Only God Forgives” starring Ryan Gosling, which will open in cinemas this year.

“Pee Mak” pitches a Thai legend of a spooky ghost against modern-day comedy and pop culture references, using its jokes and thrills to transcend the usual young, urban middle class audience of the film studio GTH and entertain everyone.

Instead of seeing a vengeful ghost chase after anyone who attempted to tell her husband she was no longer alive, the audience of “Pee Mak” gets to enjoy a story of star-crossed lovers played by Thai-German heartthrob Ma-rio Maurer (pronounced Mao-RUHR’) and 21-year-old rising star Davika Hoorne (pronounced DA-vi-GAA’ Ho-NAY’).

The horror comedy opened on March 28 with 21.2 million baht ($714,000), the second best first-day performance ever by a Thai movie.

“I had a feeling during filming that it was going to be good, but I never thought it would get as much as 500 million or 600 million baht. This is way beyond expectation,” said 33-year-old director Banjong Pisanthanakun who built up his fame from co-directing “Shutter,” a 2004 horror blockbuster that was remade by Hollywood in 2008. “We knew we got the ingredients right and that it was going to work because even when we filmed it, it was very hilarious.” Critics say the presentation of the movie was crucial in its overwhelming success.

NEW DELHI — Indian actor Sanjay Dutt has arrived at a court in Mumbai to surrender and begin serving a prison sen-tence for a weapons conviction linked to a deadly terror attack in the city in 1993.

Starting Thursday, the Bollywood star is to spend 3 1/2 years in prison. India’s Supreme Court sentenced Dutt in March to five years in prison for illegal posses-sion of weapons supplied by mafia bosses linked to the terror attack, which killed

257 people in India’s financial capital and entertainment hub.

The 53-year-old actor served 18 months in jail before being released on bail in 2007 pending an appeal. The Supreme Court re-duced his prison sentence to five years from the six-year term initially handed down.

EvEry Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is con-sidered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Based on monitoring of Bali Post, the of-ficers of polling station coming to pick up the votes to Sanglah Hospital were from the polling station (TPS) 11 and 12 Denpasar. Those offi-cers arrived around 12:30 p.m. Afterward, the officers itinerated around the Sanglah Hospital. However, due to restricted time not all treatment rooms could be visited. The rooms visited were only Wing Amerta, Anggrek, Pudak, Cempaka, Jempiring and Angsoka Room.

Aside from the time constraints, only a few of the patients and patient attendants carried the C-6 letter as one of the requirement to vote, so that the vote collected only came to tens of pieces whereas the total vote at Sanglah Hos-pital was estimated to reach 1,000.

Nyoman Reti from Tabanan, for instance, claimed to be surprised when seeing the officer of roving polling station came to Sanglah Hospital. Unfortunately, due to lack of information, Reti did not bring along her

C-6 letter as a requirement to vote. “I do not know if there will be a roving polling station. If only I had information, I would take the C-6 letter before waiting for my sick family here,” she deplored.

A member of Bali Electoral Commission, Ketut Udi Prayudi, who came to patients and patient attendants in person at Sanglah Hos-pital, said that in order to vote the residents were absolutely recommended to bring along their C-6 letter and identity card. Only a few patients and patient attendants at Sanglah Hospital brought along such requirement. As admitted by Udi, it happened due to lack of information. “Actually, the socialization has been made. Perhaps, there is a little miscom-munication. This should become a lesson to be fixed in the future,” he said. Singaraja (Bali Post)—To secure the marine area from any damage, the residents of Penuk-

tukan village made a perarem or customary agreement. It contained the confirmation to residents about what they could and could not do as well as what could not be done in the marine area.

Headman of Penuktukan, Yudi Arisandi, said the customary agreement was prepared at the initiative of local residents of Penuktukan village. The initiative came up because the marine areas such as coral reefs had suffered damage in the 1980s. Now, after undertaking various movements of repair, the marine areas could have been recovered from the damage. In order the marine area would no longer turn damaged, residents finally took the initiative to make the customary agreement.

In the customary agreement was mentioned the administrative and customary village managed the three zones in the marine areas, consist-ing of the core zone, buffer zone and utilization zone. Core zone was a preservation area of coral reef consisting of three diving spots.

For core zone, the village put up a sign by means of a red flag. To that end, the residents were not allowed to do any activity related to catching fish in the area among the red flags.

Meanwhile, the distance of buffer zone was 50 meters from the core zone. At the zone, the residents were allowed to do fish catching on a limited basis, namely only angling. Residents were only allowed to catch fish in the zone of utilization, provided that they did not use any chemicals or explosives.

What about the sanctions? Headman Yudi said the matter of sanctions had not been set forth. “With this customary agreement, we want the residents to understand about the marine conserva-tion,” he said. (kmb15)

From the data collected by each subdis-trict, the Pasti-Kerta was superior in four subdistricts namely Meng-wi, Abiansemal, Northern Kuta and Southern Kuta. Meanwhile, Puspayoga-Sukrawan (PAS) package won in Petang and Kuta subdistrict.

Based on the data collected from each subdistrict, in Petang subdistrict PAS package acquired 10,383 votes, while Pasti-Kerta got 8,846 votes. In Northern Kuta, PAS earned 16,832 votes, while Pasti-Kerta earned 21,734 votes. In Kuta, PAS was superior with the achievement of 13,219 votes, while Pasti-Kerta attained 7,262 votes. In Mengwi, PAS earned 28,567 votes, while Pasti-Kerta won 45,294 votes. Then, in Southern Kuta, PAS gained

19,512 votes, while Pasti-Kerta gained 20,595 votes. In Abianse-mal subdistrict, PAS got 27,332 votes and Pasti-Kerta won 30,463 votes. Overall, pursuant to the interim results the Pasti-Kerta package won in Badung with 134,194 votes, while PAS gained 115,645 votes.

When confirmed the results of the vote, Chairman of the Badung Electoral Commission, I Wayan Jondra, said his party was still unable to give the data of vote acquisition in Badung. Ac-cording to him, the commission did not make counting through quick count. The vote counting at village level would be done on Thursday, while at subdistrict level was after that. Each level of counting was given the time for two days.

Meanwhile, I Ketut Sudikerta, deputy governor candidate voted at polling station 10 at Pecatu vil-lage, precisely at SDN 4 Pecatu primary school at Kangin hamlet.

Sudikerta and family went to polling station on foot from his house at Kauh hamlet. At the poll-ing station, the Pasti-Kerta pack-age won 284 votes, while PAS package only got 135 votes and 2 votes were declared invalid.

After giving his vote, Sudik-erta stated the implementation of gubernatorial election in Badung took place in peaceful atmo-sphere. In general, the situation in Badung was conducive. He also expressed his gratitude to the people of Bali addressing the democratic event with together-ness.

He affirmed whatever the out-come would be, his party claimed to be ready to receive. Losing and winning was a reasonable thing. If losing, his party would be ready to respect the results of the guber-natorial election. Meanwhile, if he won, he would take the other candidate to realize the vision and mission for the sake of people’s welfare. (kmb25)

Meanwhile, Sukrawan and his wife Jro Made Sri Kusuma Yantiari with family were busy preparing for the vote in the Bali gubernatorial election 2013. Previously, they worship at family temple to invoke blessings.

Precisely at 08:00 am Sukrawan with Sri Kusuma Yantiari went on foot to polling station 14, located just a few meters from his home. On arriving at poll-ing station, Sukrawan and his wife Sri Kusuma Yantiari directly submitted the invitation letter and voter card to voting committee officer. He then received a ballot sheet and headed straight for voting booth. After giving his vote, he showed off the punched ballot to media crew monitoring the voting at polling station.

After the voting, Sukrawan explained the steps of Bali gubernatorial election had been going on well. Related to results, he did not too question. Whatever the results would be, obviously it was the will of God. “Whoever will win, I am resigned to it. Most importantly, the winner is for the future progress of Bali,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Regent of Buleleng Putu Agus Suradnyana also directly monitored a number of polling stations after giving his voting right. He monitored the election by riding a motorcycle to polling station 04 at Astina village. At the polling station, the regent directly monitored and had discussion with local voting committee. Besides, he had also asked for an explanation regarding the avail-ability of logistics for the Bali gubernatorial election. JERUSALEM — Orthodox Christians visiting the Holy Land often return home with more than just spiritual memories. Many drop by a centuries-old tattoo parlor in Jerusalem’s Old City, inking themselves with a permanent reminder not only of their pilgrimage but also of devotion to their faith.

Anton Razzouk, the family’s 72-year-old patriarch, says the business can be traced back to a Coptic ancestor who traveled by camel and donkey from Egypt to Jerusalem for a pilgrimage about 300 years ago and decided to stay.

Today, the Razzouk business is the oldest tattoo parlor in the Old City catering to Christian tourists. Razzouk says that up until the 1950’s his father’s business was unchallenged and that he was the only one in the Old City, though a handful of competitors have sprouted up since then.

The art form was passed on from father to son and countless pilgrims have returned home over the cen-turies with the markings. Razzouk said his father, Jacob, tattooed Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie during a pilgrimage to Jerusalem, as well as hundreds of allied troops stationed in the region during World War II. He said the markings remind the faithful not to sin.

“A tattoo on the hand is the best

certificate of pilgrimage because it stays there forever. It stays until the person is dead. It stays with him until the grave,” said Razzouk.

Whereas Judaism and Islam prohibit marking the body, for

Orthodox Christian denomina-tions like Armenians, Syrians, Ethiopians and Copts, tattoos are both decorative and a sign of faith. Roman Catholicism does not ban tattooing, but the practice is not as

the rest of the bodies were scattered in pieces around.” Two Kabul hospitals reported that at least six dead and 37 wounded were brought in from the scene, city hospitals chief Kabir Amiri said, adding that the toll could increase as more hospitals report in.

The bodies were too badly charred to immediately identify, he added. A spokesman for Hizb-e-Islami, Ha-roon Zarghoon, told The Associated Press that one of the movement’s operatives carried out the attack on what he described as two vehicles of American advisers.

He claimed that most of the American advisers were killed and their vehicles destroyed, though neither Afghan nor coalition of-ficials have confirmed any foreign casualties. Zarghoon says the mili-tant group has formed a new cell to carry out suicide attacks on U.S. and other coalition troops.

CARACAS, Venezuela — First milk, butter, coffee and corn-meal ran short. Now Venezuela is running out of the most basic of necessities — toilet paper. Blaming political opponents for the shortfall, as it does for other shortages, the embattled socialist government says it will import 50 million rolls to boost supplies.

That was little comfort to con-sumers struggling to find toilet paper on Wednesday. “This is the last straw,” said Manuel Fagun-des, a shopper hunting for tissue in downtown Caracas. “I’m 71 years old and this is the first time I’ve seen this.”

One supermarket visited by The Associated Press in the capi-tal on Wednesday was out of toilet paper. Another had just received a fresh batch, and it quickly filled up with shoppers as the word spread.

“I’ve been looking for it for two weeks,” said Cristina Ramos. “I was told that they had some here and now I’m in line.” Econo-mists say Venezuela’s shortages stem from price controls meant to make basic goods available to the poorest parts of society and the government’s controls on foreign currency.

“State-controlled prices — prices that are set below market-clearing price — always result in shortages. The shortage problem will only get worse, as it did over the years in the Soviet Union,” said Steve Hanke, professor of economics at Johns Hopkins University.

President Nicolas Maduro, who was selected by the dying Hugo Chavez to carry on his “Bolivarian revolution,” claims that anti-government forces,

including the private sector, are causing the shortages in an effort to destabilize the country.

The government this week an-nounced it would import 760,000 tons of food and 50 million rolls of toilet paper.

Commerce Minister Alejandro Fleming blamed the shortage of toilet tissue on “excessive de-mand” built up as a result of “a media campaign that has been generated to disrupt the country.”

“The revolution will bring the country the equivalent of 50 mil-lion rolls of toilet paper,” he was quoted as saying Tuesday by state news agency AVN. “We are going to saturate the market so that our people calm down.”

Finance Minister Nelson Me-rentes said the government was also addressing the lack of foreign currency, which has resulted in the suspension of foreign supplies of raw materials, equipment and spare parts to Venezuelan compa-nies, disrupting their production. “We are making progress ... we have to work very hard,” Merentes told reporters Wednesday.

Many factories operate at half capacity because the currency controls make it hard for them to pay for imported parts and mate-rials. Business leaders say some companies verge on bankruptcy because they cannot extend lines of credit with foreign suppliers.

Merentes said the government had met the U.S. dollar requests of some 1,500 small- and medium-sized companies facing supply problems, and was reviewing requests from a similar number of larger companies.

BEIJING - Police in southern China detained a man early Thurs-day who is suspected of calling in fake bomb threats that grounded five domestic flights the previous day. The man was detained at a rental home in the city of Dongguan, police in the southern hub of Shenzhen said in an online statement.

sible motive. They identified the suspect by his surname, Wang, and said he is 26, unemployed and from the autonomous northern territory of Inner Mongolia.

He is accused of making threats Wednesday against five flights headed to Shenzhen and Xi’an from other cities, including Bei-jing, Nanjing and Shanghai. The flights were operated by Shenzhen Airlines, China Eastern Airlines,

and Juneyao Airlines. The crime is punishable by up to 15 years in prison. Last year, a man in Dong-guan who made a fake bomb threat to delay the arrival of his creditor received a four-year sentence.

China has undergone a massive expansion in air travel in recent years. Delays, poor airline service and unruly passengers lead to frequent disruptions at airports or aboard flights.

TOKYO - Japan said Thursday that its economy grew again in the quarter to March, pointing to a recovery as Tokyo and its hand-picked central bank team set about stoking the world’s third-largest economy.

The 0.9 percent on-quarter growth -- or 3.5 percent on an annualised basis if the data were stretched over a year -- confirmed Japan’s exit from recession as consumers spent more, although the nation’s cautious firms did not follow suit.

The data was seen by some observers as an early mark of suc-cess for Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s bid to stimulate the long-stagnant economy with a policy prescription of big government spending and aggressive central bank easing.

Dubbed “Abenomics”, the moves mark a renewed assault on the deflation that has plagued Ja-pan’s economy for years, crimp-ing private spending and business investment.

The central bank’s recent policy moves have helped push down the value of the yen, giv-ing a boost to the export sector as it makes Japanese firms more competitive overseas and inflates the value of repatriated foreign income.

The currency’s steep decline in recent months -- losing around one-quarter of its value since November -- has translated into a huge rally on the Tokyo Stock Exchange with foreign investors piling into Japanese stocks.

“The Japanese economy is on the right track to recovery,” said Hideki Matsumura, senior economist with the Japan Research Institute.

“Individual spending is pick-ing up as the value of assets, including stocks, rose on the back of the brighter economic outlook. Exports are also recovering. The economy is expected to grow fur-ther for now thanks to the impact of Abenomics.”

But a 0.7 percent drop in capital spending highlighted still-weak spending by firms, while a series of tax hikes aimed at doubling the national sales tax to 10 percent by 2015 could also hit private spending, analysts said.

“The January-March figure was quite strong, which con-firmed that the Japanese economy hit bottom late last year,” said Shinichiro Kobayashi, economist with Mitsubishi UFJ Research and Consulting.

Abe has called on the nation’s employers to hike their employee pay to stimulate spending.

Japan eased out of recession in the last quarter of 2012, after the economy shrunk on weak export demand tied to financial turmoil in the key European market, a strong yen and a diplomatic row with China that sparked a consumer boycott of Japanese goods.

Meanwhile, Japan logged a modest pickup in factory output in March as the unemployment rate hit a multi-year low.

But the country’s trade deficit more than quadrupled to 362.4 bil l ion yen ($3.6 bil l ion) in March compared to the same period a year earlier, as a weaker yen inflated import costs.

The declining unit, while gen-erally good for exporters, makes foreign goods more expensive and has sent Japan’s energy bills soaring as it turned to pricey fossil-fuel alternatives after shutting its nuclear reactors in

the aftermath of the Fukushima atomic crisis two years ago.

Last month, the Bank of Japan (BoJ) said it expected 2.9 percent growth in Japan’s economy for the fiscal year to March, while tipping inflation to hit 0.7 per-cent, as the battle to beat falling prices continues.

The BoJ has pledged to meet a two percent inflation target within two years, a key aim of the government, while separate fig-ures this week showed almost 83 percent of Japanese households think prices will rise in a year, the first reading above 80 percent in four and a half years.

Deflation is bad for the econ-omy because it encourages con-sumers to put off spending in the belief that their intended purchases will be cheaper in the future, softening demand and hurting producers.

Toyota’s market capitalisa-tion stood at 22.23 trillion yen ($217 billion) on Thursday, beating out the Galaxy smart-phone and tablet computer giant which was worth the equivalent of 20.32 trillion yen.

Toyota, also the world’s biggest automaker, has seen its shares jump on the back of improving financial results. The Corolla and Camry maker said last week its full-year net profit more than tripled.

Samsung overtook the Japa-nese giant in the market value table in 2011, according to the leading Nikkei business daily, as the South Korean conglom-erate notched up huge profits in its global battle with US rival Apple.

Toyota’s Tokyo-listed shares finished at 6,450 yen, more than double their 3,165 yen closing price a year earlier.

In the Usada Wrespati Tatwa manuscript, explained this waidika (Hindu doctor), merana was the dis-ease in plants. In animal it was called sasab, while in human was called gering. “The nangluk merana ritual was used to neutralize the nature, so that it can stem all kinds of diseases such as gering, sasab and merana and they will not come to mainland or to human nature,” he said.

The ritual was focused on invok-ing welfare and safety to Lord Varuna as the ruler of the sea. He had the power to clean up all the existing diseases. The universe was derived from water or thalesia. Similarly, human also began and ended with water. “The whole universe was purified by him at sea. As evidence, whatever discharged into the sea does not cause any odor. Therefore, the holy water or tirtha is centered at sea,” he explained.

This humanist and religious ob-server explained that 65-70 percent of macrocosm (universe) and mi-crocosm (human body) contained water. When, we were in the womb, 90 percent of our protector was water and at the meeting of heaven and earth or kama bang (sperm) and kama petak (ovum) or intercourse of mother and father we are composed of 100 percent of water. “That’s why we end the ritual with water of Lord Varuna,” he convinced.

In the nangluk merana was always accompanied with animal sacrifice by slaughtering or floating animal into the sea. It was affected by bhairava leading to Shaktism. Sacred animal sacrifice was intended to neutralize nature and as a substitute for human sacrifice, so that it did not sacrifice human.

Nangluk merana ritual was regu-larly held towards year end because a very extreme weather change took place in December. It was before the seventh month in Balinese calendar being prone to natural disasters and disease outbreaks. “Sickness in the seventh month is not affected by leak or Balinese black magic, but pure sickness as a result of climate change. It is a sickness caused by one of the daiweika dhuka namely sickness due to deity, ourselves and our inadvertency,” he said.

Hindu community in Bali drove away global warming by nangluk marana ritual in which in Hinduism it was called detya (effect of feral solar heat). This Detya was portrayed as a great giant with prominence. The poorly maintained environment would trigger Denawa or great flood-ing disaster. “Organizing the nangluk merana ritual should be accompanied with environmental conservation,” he added.

“The Bali gubernatorial elec-tion positively supported the economic growth due to more economic cycles in which the people’s consumption will in-crease,” said the Head of BPS Bali, Gde Suarsa, in Denpasar.

He said the activities of po-litical party ahead of the Bali gubernatorial election showed a visible impact on the economic growth in the coming period. The impact of this event was expected to support the eco-nomic growth by 1 percent.

“The Bali gubernatorial elec-tion has an economic impact because there is movement or community mobilization and other activities en masse. However, it is insignificant and estimated to have impact less than 1 percent on the economic growth,” he said.

Other than the impact of the regional leader election, the construction of some infra-structures to support the imple-mentation of the APEC Summit 2013 that would take place in Bali, said Gde Suarsa, also en-couraged the economic growth in the construction sector.

This sector grew by 16.46 per-cent due to the growth in the construction sector driving the increase in the demand for sup-porting material such as stone and sand,” he explained.

According to him, in general the economic growth of Bali for the first quarter of 2013 was better than the last year’s eco-

nomic condition. The economy of Bali grew 6.71 percent over the same period in 2012. The structure of GRDP was still dominated by the use of house-hold consumption, government consumption and Gross Do-mestic Fixed Capital Forma-tion (PMTDB) respectively contributing to the total Gross Regional Domestic Product at 55.71 percent, 13.80 percent and 36.73 percent.

“Spatially, the greatest con-tribution forming the Bali’s economy in the first quarter was contributed by the Badung County at 25.16 percent and Denpasar at 21.08 percent. Mahasen hit land with maximum wind speeds of about 100 kph (62 mph) and quickly weakened to 90 kph (56 mph), said Alam, the meteorologi-cal official.

and huts made of reeds in dozens of refugee camps.

Driven from their homes by vio-lence, some members of the Muslim minority group refused to follow evacuation orders. Many distrust offi-cials in the majority-Buddhist country, where Rohingya have faced decades of discrimination.

U.N. officials, hoping they would inspire greater trust, fanned out across the area to encourage people to leave. They said Thursday that more than 35,000 people had been relocated.

In Bangladesh, river ferries and boat service were suspended, and scores of factories near the choppy Bay of Bengal were closed. The military said it was keeping 22 navy ships and 19 Air Force helicopters at the ready.

“We have seen such a disaster before,” said Mohammad Abu Taleb, who shut down his convenience shop in Cox’s Bazar, a city of 200,000. “It’s better to stay home. I’m not taking any chance.”

A 1991 cyclone that slammed into Bangladesh from the Bay of Bengal killed an estimated 139,000 people and left millions homeless. In 2008, Myanmar’s southern delta was dev-astated Cyclone Nargis, which swept away entire farming villages and killed more than 130,000 people. Both those cyclones were much more powerful than Cyclone Mahasen, which is rated Category 1 - the weakest level.

may take a whole day for it to pass the Bangladesh coast.

The Bangladesh Ministry of Di-saster Management said more than 1 million people had been evacuated from coastal areas. Television stations reported the deaths of two men, one of whom was crushed by a tree uprooted by the wind.

Related heavy rains and flooding in Sri Lanka were blamed for eight deaths earlier this week. At least eight people - and possibly many more - were killed in Myanmar as they fled the cyclone Monday night, when overcrowded boats carrying more than 100 Rohingya capsized. Only 43 people had been rescued by Thursday, and more than 50 Rohingya were still missing.

India’s Meteorological Department forecast damage to the northeastern states of Assam, Mizoram, Manipur, Tripura and Nagaland, and advised fishermen off the west coast of the country to be cautious for the next 36 hours.

Much attention was focused on western Myanmar because of the crowded, low-lying camps where many Rohingya remain.

In Rakhine state, around 140,000 people - mostly Rohingya - have been living in the camps since last year, when two outbreaks of sectarian vio-lence between the Muslim minority and ethnic Rakhine Buddhists forced many Rohingya from their homes.

Nearly half the displaced live in coastal areas considered highly vul-nerable to storm surges and flooding from Cyclone Mahasen.

KATMANDU, Nepal - A plane crashed while trying to land at a mountain airstrip in northern Nepal early Thursday, and all 21 people on board, including eight Japanese tourists, survived with injuries, police said.

Four of the injured were in critical condition, police officer Bhim Bahadur Chand said. The state-owned Nepal Airlines plane was carry-ing eight Japanese tourists. The others on board, including three crew members, are all Nepali.

The Canadian-built Twin Otter plane was trying to land at Jomsom airport, some 200 kilometers (125 miles) northwest of the capital, Kat-mandu, when it crashed on the banks of the Kaligandaki river.

All of the injured were flown in different planes to the nearby city of Pokhara, where there are better-equipped hospitals.

Police said the wheel of the plane touched the runway but that the aircraft veered toward the right and crashed on the banks of the Ka-ligandaki. The front portion of the plane was destroyed, but the rear part remained intact. The left wing remained submerged in the river. Rescuers were able to pull the injured passengers and crew from the plane.

Civil aviation officials identified the Japanese passengers as Namba Hajime, Sato Setsuko, Terada Etsuko, Kawabe Sachiyo, Yazawa Yaeko, Yazawa Hiromi, Kawakami Hiroko and Abe Akiko. Other details about the Japanese passengers were not immediately known.

The area is popular with foreign trekkers visiting the Mount Annapur-na area and Hindu pilgrims visiting the revered Muktinath temple.

Fifteen people were killed last May when a plane crashed while attempting to land at the same airport.

MEXICO CITY - Seismic activity is continuing at the Popocatepetl volcano near Mexico City and authorities say they have readied shelters and identified evacuation routes in case they should be needed.

Mexico’s National Disaster Prevention Center says there were two explosions at the white-capped volcano between Tuesday night and Wednesday morning. The center says the volcano spewed a plume of steam about a mile (1.5 kilometer) into the sky.

Authorities continue to monitor the volcano’s activity but have not ordered any evacuations. Rain has been forecast for the area, however, and authorities say towns nearby could be flooded with ash mud.

Popocatepetl has put out small eruptions of ash almost daily since a round of activity began in 1994. The eruptions started strengthening two weeks ago and increased even more this weekend.

TIMIKA - Rescuers have recovered one more body from a col-lapsed mine tunnel in eastern Indonesia, police said Thursday, taking the death toll to five as search teams battled to reach 24 others still trapped.

Ten workers have been rescued alive following the accident on Tuesday at US firm Freeport-McMoRan’s Grasberg, one of the world’s biggest gold and copper mines high in the mountains of rugged Papua province.

Freeport Indonesia, the local subsidiary of the firm, halted all operations at the mine on Wednesday to show solidarity with those affected, as hundreds of angry workers protested to demand safer working conditions.

“Evacuation efforts have been continuing overnight, and we have found one more dead body,” local police chief Sudirman, who like many Indonesians goes by one name, told AFP.

He said efforts to rescue the Indonesian workers were being hampered by “very limited space and the risk of falling rocks from above that could put the evacuation team in danger”.

The rescue team, led by Freeport, was using a variety of equip-ment including saws and wheelbarrows to clear debris from the site.

The tunnel was part of an underground training facility and not one of the mining areas, and those inside at the time of the accident were direct employees and contract workers attending a safety training course.

There have been long-running tensions at Grasberg, and some 1,000 workers protested near the mine on Wednesday.

They blocked a road near their dormitories with trucks, heavy machinery and pieces of wood, only allowing ambulances and other vehicles involved in the rescue effort to pass.

In 2011, a three-month strike by thousands of workers at Grasberg crippled production, and only came to an end once management agreed to a big pay hike.

The industrial action sparked a wave of deadly clashes between police and gunmen around the mine, with at least 11 people, all Indonesians, killed.

All 108 passengers and crew survived the spectacular April 13 crash, which split the new Boeing 737-800 in two and was a major blow to Lion Air, which has signed record plane orders but is trying to shake off its poor safety record.

The preliminary investigation by the National Transport Safety Committee found the 24-year-old Indian national at the plane’s helm was forced to hand control to the Indonesian captain since he could not see the runway upon descent.

The switch was made at 150 feet (46 metres) -- below the minimum altitude considered safe to continue descending -- and the captain or-dered the plane to go around just one second before it crashed into the sea.

The report recommended Lion Air immediately implement sever-

al safety measures, such as review-ing “the policy and procedures regarding the risk associated with changeover of control at critical altitudes or critical time”.

The airline should also reiter-ate safety protocols related to minimum altitudes to its pilots, it said.

The report described a sudden change in weather, with clear vis-ibility minutes before the flight landed changing to rain and very poor visibility seconds before.

While a full investigation will determine the exact cause, the preliminary report ruled out any fault with the aircraft.

Lion Air was little-known in-ternationally until it struck two of the world’s largest aircraft orders worth a staggering $46 billion.

In March Lion Air ordered 234

medium-haul A320 jets worth $18.4 billion euros ($24.2 billion) from Europe’s Airbus to boost its expansion as air travel booms in the fast-developing nation of 240 million.

That order followed its $22.4 billion order for 230 Boeing 737 airliners in 2011.

But experts have raised con-cerns there is a lack of quali-fied pilots in Indonesia to fly the fast-increasing number of planes acquired by Lion Air.

Along with with most Indo-nesian airlines, it is banned from US and European skies for safety reasons.

Between 2004 and 2006 Lion Air suffered a series of six ac-cidents which all involved planes overshooting or missing the run-way. No one died.

migration Office in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) has detained 96 illegal immigrants during January until May 2013.

Head of the immigration office Silvester Sili Laba said here on Thursday that the number rose by around 200 percent from that of the same period in 2012 which was only 30 persons.

According to him, the illegal immigrants were detained in Rote Ndao and Kupang Bay before they crossed to Australia by traditional fishing boats to seek political asylum there.

He said the 96 illegal immi-grants who had been detained since the past five months were made up of 33 persons from Vietnam, six from Myanmar, 10 from Ban-

gladesh, 15 from Sudan, 22 from Somalia, and 10 from India.

Sili Laba added that the illegal immigrants tried to use a number of places in East Nusa Tenggara as a transit before crossing to Australia.

“East Nusa Tenggara is an ideal place for illegal immigrants from other countries to Australia,” Sili said.

The illegal immigrants had been known trying to hide in small islands in East Nusa Teng-gara, before they found fishing boats to be hired to carry them to Australia.

But he said that now the and police have intensified patrol in the sea around the islands, giving little room for the illegal immi-grants to escape detection.

In 2012, the Kupang immigra-

tion office detained 414 illegal immigrants from Middle East all wanting to go to Australia.

Sili said that in April this year, 79 illegal immigrants from the Middle East were stranded in the island of Rote, and some of them were evacuated to Kupang and accommodated at the Immigration Office detention house, although it was already overcapacity.

“It is a new problem for us because the number of detention houses for the illegal immigrant was limited while the number of the illegal immigrant continues to increase,” Sili Laba said.

According to him, the illegal immigrants from the Middle East who were stranded at Rote Island were detained by the local police when they attempted to cross to Australia.

DORTMUND, Germany — While Borussia Dortmund coach Juer-gen Klopp lauded his side’s progress to the Champions League final as an “incredible journey,” the club’s advancement off the pitch is no less remarkable.

Faced with insolvency in 2005 after years of economic difficulty, Dortmund has recovered by posting club-record revenue figures and expanding its fan-base to make it the most popular club in Germany, with a broadening appeal in Europe.

“Perhaps the headline should be ‘From Ground Zero to Wembley.’ Eight years ago, there were creditors sitting here and no journalists. It was the edge of the cliff, you couldn’t get any closer,” Dortmund chief executive Hans-Joachim Watzke said Wednesday.

Dortmund faces German rival Bayern Munich at Wembley, London on May 25, but the club’s last Champions League final appearance, which it won in 1997, preceded a period of turmoil and mismanagement that almost drove it to extinction.

Dortmund had been dogged by financial problems from the early 1980s, but the real danger came after the club was listed on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange in 2000, when the proceeds were effectively squandered and costs spiraled dangerously out of control.

Expensive stars helped win the Bundesliga in 2002, but failure to advance to the Champions League the following year had dramatic consequences.

By the time Watzke faced the creditors on March 14, 2005, the club had been forced to sell its Westfalen Stadium, debts totaled more than 180 million euros and the value of shares plummeted by more than 80 percent, forcing players’ wages to be cut.

“When you have to tell the markets that your existence is threatened, and then face creditors in the knowledge that you need signatures to prevent the club going out of business. “Our main philosophy is that we will never again go one euro into debt for a transfer. We will live within our means. We can do anything but we need to have earned the money first,” Watzke said.

PARIS - Paris St Germain coach Carlo Ancelotti is set for talks with the club president on Friday as speculation continues to swirl about his future with the French champions.

PSG President Nasser al-Khe-laifi said on Monday they had re-jected a bid by Real Madrid to hire Ancelotti, whose deal with PSG was automatically extended until June 2014 after the club attained Champions League qualification.

needed some things to be clarified before he made a decision about his future. “I have not talked with the club yet. We have a meeting scheduled on Friday, then we’ll see,” he told sports daily L’Equipe. “I want to continue if it’s possible to continue.

DORTMUND, Germany — While Borussia Dortmund coach Juer-gen Klopp lauded his side’s progress to the Champions League final as an “incredible journey,” the club’s advancement off the pitch is no less remarkable.

Faced with insolvency in 2005 after years of economic difficulty, Dortmund has recovered by posting club-record revenue figures and expanding its fan-base to make it the most popular club in Germany, with a broadening appeal in Europe.

“Perhaps the headline should be ‘From Ground Zero to Wembley.’ Eight years ago, there were creditors sitting here and no journalists. It was the edge of the cliff, you couldn’t get any closer,” Dortmund chief executive Hans-Joachim Watzke said Wednesday.

Dortmund faces German rival Bayern Munich at Wembley, London on May 25, but the club’s last Champions League final appearance, which it won in 1997, preceded a period of turmoil and mismanagement that almost drove it to extinction.

Dortmund had been dogged by financial problems from the early 1980s, but the real danger came after the club was listed on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange in 2000, when the proceeds were effectively squandered and costs spiraled dangerously out of control.

Expensive stars helped win the Bundesliga in 2002, but failure to advance to the Champions League the following year had dramatic consequences.

By the time Watzke faced the creditors on March 14, 2005, the club had been forced to sell its Westfalen Stadium, debts totaled more than 180 million euros and the value of shares plummeted by more than 80 percent, forcing players’ wages to be cut.

“When you have to tell the markets that your existence is threatened, and then face creditors in the knowledge that you need signatures to prevent the club going out of business. If we hadn’t gotten through, we would have been relegated to the amateur leagues,” Watzke said. The club has learned from its mistakes.

“Our main philosophy is that we will never again go one euro into debt for a transfer. We will live within our means. We can do anything but we need to have earned the money first,” Watzke said.

Dortmund earned almost 200 million euros’ revenue in the year to the end of June, 2012, with a net profit of 34 million euros. It was also a year of success on the pitch, with the club defending its Bundesliga title and then routing Bayern 5-2 in the German Cup final.

SAO PAULO — Boca Juniors advanced to the quarterfinals of the Copa Libertadores by holding defending champion to a 1-1 draw on Wednesday, eliminating the Bra-zilian club 2-1 on aggregate.

Veteran Juan Roman Riquelme scored a remarkable goal to open the scoring in the 25th, finding the far corner with a curling long-range shot from near the sidelines. Brazil midfielder Paulinho equalized for Corinthians in the 50th, but the champions needed two more goals to move on in the Latin American tournament.

Corinthians loudly complained of two offside calls that led to disal-lowed goals, in addition to a penalty not called by the referee. Boca Ju-niors will now play fellow Argen-tine club Newell’s Old Boys.

The main section of the storm reached land Thursday and imme-diately began weakening, according to Mohammad Shah Alam, director of the Bangladesh Meteorological Department. Even before the brunt of the storm hit, at least 18 deaths related to Ma-hasen were reported in Bangladesh, Myanmar and Sri Lanka.

Mahasen hit land with maximum wind speeds of about 100 kph (62 mph) and quickly weakened to 90 kph (56 mph), said Alam, the meteorologi-cal official.

U.N. officials, hoping they would inspire greater trust, fanned out across the area to encourage people to leave. They said Thursday that more than 35,000 people had been relocated.

In Bangladesh, river ferries and boat service were suspended, and scores of factories near the choppy Bay of Bengal were closed. The military said it was keeping 22 navy ships and 19 Air Force helicopters at the ready.

“We have seen such a disaster before,” said Mohammad Abu Taleb, who shut down his convenience shop in Cox’s Bazar, a city of 200,000. “It’s better to stay home. I’m not taking any chance.”

A 1991 cyclone that slammed into Bangladesh from the Bay of Bengal killed an estimated 139,000 people and left millions homeless. In 2008, Myanmar’s southern delta was dev-astated Cyclone Nargis, which swept away entire farming villages and killed more than 130,000 people. Both those cyclones were much more powerful than Cyclone Mahasen, which is rated Category 1 - the weakest level.

The Bangladesh Ministry of Di-saster Management said more than 1 million people had been evacuated from coastal areas. Television stations reported the deaths of two men, one of whom was crushed by a tree uprooted by the wind.

Related heavy rains and flooding in Sri Lanka were blamed for eight deaths earlier this week. At least eight people - and possibly many more - were killed in Myanmar as they fled the cyclone Monday night, when overcrowded boats carrying more than 100 Rohingya capsized. Only 43 people had been rescued by Thursday, and more than 50 Rohingya were still missing.

India’s Meteorological Department forecast damage to the northeastern states of Assam, Mizoram, Manipur, Tripura and Nagaland, and advised fishermen off the west coast of the country to be cautious for the next 36 hours.

Much attention was focused on western Myanmar because of the crowded, low-lying camps where many Rohingya remain.

In Rakhine state, around 140,000 people - mostly Rohingya - have been living in the camps since last year, when two outbreaks of sectarian vio-lence between the Muslim minority and ethnic Rakhine Buddhists forced many Rohingya from their homes.

Nearly half the displaced live in coastal areas considered highly vul-nerable to storm surges and flooding from Cyclone Mahasen.

KATMANDU, Nepal - A plane crashed while trying to land at a mountain airstrip in northern Nepal early Thursday, and all 21 people on board, including eight Japanese tourists, survived with injuries, police said.

Four of the injured were in critical condition, police officer Bhim Bahadur Chand said. The state-owned Nepal Airlines plane was carry-ing eight Japanese tourists. The others on board, including three crew members, are all Nepali.

The Canadian-built Twin Otter plane was trying to land at Jomsom airport, some 200 kilometers (125 miles) northwest of the capital, Kat-mandu, when it crashed on the banks of the Kaligandaki river.

All of the injured were flown in different planes to the nearby city of Pokhara, where there are better-equipped hospitals.

Police said the wheel of the plane touched the runway but that the aircraft veered toward the right and crashed on the banks of the Ka-ligandaki. The front portion of the plane was destroyed, but the rear part remained intact. The left wing remained submerged in the river. Rescuers were able to pull the injured passengers and crew from the plane.

Civil aviation officials identified the Japanese passengers as Namba Hajime, Sato Setsuko, Terada Etsuko, Kawabe Sachiyo, Yazawa Yaeko, Yazawa Hiromi, Kawakami Hiroko and Abe Akiko. Other details about the Japanese passengers were not immediately known.

The area is popular with foreign trekkers visiting the Mount Annapur-na area and Hindu pilgrims visiting the revered Muktinath temple.

Fifteen people were killed last May when a plane crashed while attempting to land at the same airport.

MEXICO CITY - Seismic activity is continuing at the Popocatepetl volcano near Mexico City and authorities say they have readied shelters and identified evacuation routes in case they should be needed.

Mexico’s National Disaster Prevention Center says there were two explosions at the white-capped volcano between Tuesday night and Wednesday morning. The center says the volcano spewed a plume of steam about a mile (1.5 kilometer) into the sky.

Authorities continue to monitor the volcano’s activity but have not ordered any evacuations. Rain has been forecast for the area, however, and authorities say towns nearby could be flooded with ash mud.

Popocatepetl has put out small eruptions of ash almost daily since a round of activity began in 1994. The eruptions started strengthening two weeks ago and increased even more this weekend.

TIMIKA - Rescuers have recovered one more body from a col-lapsed mine tunnel in eastern Indonesia, police said Thursday, taking the death toll to five as search teams battled to reach 24 others still trapped.

Ten workers have been rescued alive following the accident on Tuesday at US firm Freeport-McMoRan’s Grasberg, one of the world’s biggest gold and copper mines high in the mountains of rugged Papua province.

Freeport Indonesia, the local subsidiary of the firm, halted all operations at the mine on Wednesday to show solidarity with those affected, as hundreds of angry workers protested to demand safer working conditions.

“Evacuation efforts have been continuing overnight, and we have found one more dead body,” local police chief Sudirman, who like many Indonesians goes by one name, told AFP.

He said efforts to rescue the Indonesian workers were being hampered by “very limited space and the risk of falling rocks from above that could put the evacuation team in danger”.

The rescue team, led by Freeport, was using a variety of equip-ment including saws and wheelbarrows to clear debris from the site.

The tunnel was part of an underground training facility and not one of the mining areas, and those inside at the time of the accident were direct employees and contract workers attending a safety training course.

There have been long-running tensions at Grasberg, and some 1,000 workers protested near the mine on Wednesday.

They blocked a road near their dormitories with trucks, heavy machinery and pieces of wood, only allowing ambulances and other vehicles involved in the rescue effort to pass.

In 2011, a three-month strike by thousands of workers at Grasberg crippled production, and only came to an end once management agreed to a big pay hike.

The industrial action sparked a wave of deadly clashes between police and gunmen around the mine, with at least 11 people, all Indonesians, killed.

All 108 passengers and crew survived the spectacular April 13 crash, which split the new Boeing 737-800 in two and was a major blow to Lion Air, which has signed record plane orders but is trying to shake off its poor safety record.

The preliminary investigation by the National Transport Safety Committee found the 24-year-old Indian national at the plane’s helm was forced to hand control to the Indonesian captain since he could not see the runway upon descent.

The switch was made at 150 feet (46 metres) -- below the minimum altitude considered safe to continue descending -- and the captain or-dered the plane to go around just one second before it crashed into the sea.

The report recommended Lion Air immediately implement sever-

al safety measures, such as review-ing “the policy and procedures regarding the risk associated with changeover of control at critical altitudes or critical time”.

The airline should also reiter-ate safety protocols related to minimum altitudes to its pilots, it said.

The report described a sudden change in weather, with clear vis-ibility minutes before the flight landed changing to rain and very poor visibility seconds before.

While a full investigation will determine the exact cause, the preliminary report ruled out any fault with the aircraft.

Lion Air was little-known in-ternationally until it struck two of the world’s largest aircraft orders worth a staggering $46 billion.

In March Lion Air ordered 234

medium-haul A320 jets worth $18.4 billion euros ($24.2 billion) from Europe’s Airbus to boost its expansion as air travel booms in the fast-developing nation of 240 million.

That order followed its $22.4 billion order for 230 Boeing 737 airliners in 2011.

But experts have raised con-cerns there is a lack of quali-fied pilots in Indonesia to fly the fast-increasing number of planes acquired by Lion Air.

Along with with most Indo-nesian airlines, it is banned from US and European skies for safety reasons.

Between 2004 and 2006 Lion Air suffered a series of six ac-cidents which all involved planes overshooting or missing the run-way. No one died.

migration Office in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) has detained 96 illegal immigrants during January until May 2013.

Head of the immigration office Silvester Sili Laba said here on Thursday that the number rose by around 200 percent from that of the same period in 2012 which was only 30 persons.

According to him, the illegal immigrants were detained in Rote Ndao and Kupang Bay before they crossed to Australia by traditional fishing boats to seek political asylum there.

He said the 96 illegal immi-grants who had been detained since the past five months were made up of 33 persons from Vietnam, six from Myanmar, 10 from Ban-

gladesh, 15 from Sudan, 22 from Somalia, and 10 from India.

Sili Laba added that the illegal immigrants tried to use a number of places in East Nusa Tenggara as a transit before crossing to Australia.

“East Nusa Tenggara is an ideal place for illegal immigrants from other countries to Australia,” Sili said.

The illegal immigrants had been known trying to hide in small islands in East Nusa Teng-gara, before they found fishing boats to be hired to carry them to Australia.

But he said that now the and police have intensified patrol in the sea around the islands, giving little room for the illegal immi-grants to escape detection.

In 2012, the Kupang immigra-

tion office detained 414 illegal immigrants from Middle East all wanting to go to Australia.

Sili said that in April this year, 79 illegal immigrants from the Middle East were stranded in the island of Rote, and some of them were evacuated to Kupang and accommodated at the Immigration Office detention house, although it was already overcapacity.

“It is a new problem for us because the number of detention houses for the illegal immigrant was limited while the number of the illegal immigrant continues to increase,” Sili Laba said.

According to him, the illegal immigrants from the Middle East who were stranded at Rote Island were detained by the local police when they attempted to cross to Australia.

TOKYO - Japan said Thursday that its economy grew again in the quarter to March, pointing to a recovery as Tokyo and its hand-picked central bank team set about stoking the world’s third-largest economy.

The 0.9 percent on-quarter growth -- or 3.5 percent on an annualised basis if the data were stretched over a year -- confirmed Japan’s exit from recession as consumers spent more, although the nation’s cautious firms did not follow suit.

The data was seen by some observers as an early mark of suc-cess for Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s bid to stimulate the long-stagnant economy with a policy prescription of big government spending and aggressive central bank easing.

Dubbed “Abenomics”, the moves mark a renewed assault on the deflation that has plagued Ja-pan’s economy for years, crimp-ing private spending and business investment.

The central bank’s recent policy moves have helped push down the value of the yen, giv-ing a boost to the export sector as it makes Japanese firms more competitive overseas and inflates the value of repatriated foreign income.

The currency’s steep decline in recent months -- losing around one-quarter of its value since November -- has translated into a huge rally on the Tokyo Stock Exchange with foreign investors piling into Japanese stocks.

“The Japanese economy is on the right track to recovery,” said Hideki Matsumura, senior economist with the Japan Research Institute.

“Individual spending is pick-ing up as the value of assets, including stocks, rose on the back of the brighter economic outlook. Exports are also recovering. The economy is expected to grow fur-ther for now thanks to the impact of Abenomics.”

But a 0.7 percent drop in capital spending highlighted still-weak spending by firms, while a series of tax hikes aimed at doubling the national sales tax to 10 percent by 2015 could also hit private spending, analysts said.

“The January-March figure was quite strong, which con-firmed that the Japanese economy hit bottom late last year,” said Shinichiro Kobayashi, economist with Mitsubishi UFJ Research and Consulting.

Abe has called on the nation’s employers to hike their employee pay to stimulate spending.

Japan eased out of recession in the last quarter of 2012, after the economy shrunk on weak export demand tied to financial turmoil in the key European market, a strong yen and a diplomatic row with China that sparked a consumer boycott of Japanese goods.

Meanwhile, Japan logged a modest pickup in factory output in March as the unemployment rate hit a multi-year low.

But the country’s trade deficit more than quadrupled to 362.4 bil l ion yen ($3.6 bil l ion) in March compared to the same period a year earlier, as a weaker yen inflated import costs.

The declining unit, while gen-erally good for exporters, makes foreign goods more expensive and has sent Japan’s energy bills soaring as it turned to pricey fossil-fuel alternatives after shutting its nuclear reactors in

the aftermath of the Fukushima atomic crisis two years ago.

Last month, the Bank of Japan (BoJ) said it expected 2.9 percent growth in Japan’s economy for the fiscal year to March, while tipping inflation to hit 0.7 per-cent, as the battle to beat falling prices continues.

The BoJ has pledged to meet a two percent inflation target within two years, a key aim of the government, while separate fig-ures this week showed almost 83 percent of Japanese households think prices will rise in a year, the first reading above 80 percent in four and a half years.

Deflation is bad for the econ-omy because it encourages con-sumers to put off spending in the belief that their intended purchases will be cheaper in the future, softening demand and hurting producers.

Toyota’s market capitalisa-tion stood at 22.23 trillion yen ($217 billion) on Thursday, beating out the Galaxy smart-phone and tablet computer giant which was worth the equivalent of 20.32 trillion yen.

Toyota, also the world’s biggest automaker, has seen its shares jump on the back of improving financial results. The Corolla and Camry maker said last week its full-year net profit more than tripled.

Samsung overtook the Japa-nese giant in the market value table in 2011, according to the leading Nikkei business daily, as the South Korean conglom-erate notched up huge profits in its global battle with US rival Apple.

Through the ritual, farmers tried to stem all the plant diseases and pests attacking their crop, either in irrigated field or non-irrigated field.

In the Usada Wrespati Tatwa manuscript, explained this waidika (Hindu doctor), merana was the dis-ease in plants. In animal it was called sasab, while in human was called gering. “The nangluk merana ritual was used to neutralize the nature, so that it can stem all kinds of diseases such as gering, sasab and merana and they will not come to mainland or to human nature,” he said.

The ritual was focused on invok-ing welfare and safety to Lord Varuna as the ruler of the sea. He had the power to clean up all the existing diseases. The universe was derived from water or thalesia. Similarly, human also began and ended with water. “The whole universe was purified by him at sea. As evidence, whatever discharged into the sea does not cause any odor. Therefore, the holy water or tirtha is centered at sea,” he explained.

This humanist and religious ob-server explained that 65-70 percent of macrocosm (universe) and mi-crocosm (human body) contained water. When, we were in the womb, 90 percent of our protector was water and at the meeting of heaven and earth or kama bang (sperm) and kama petak (ovum) or intercourse of mother and father we are composed of 100 percent of water. “That’s why we end the ritual with water of Lord Varuna,” he convinced.

In the nangluk merana was always accompanied with animal sacrifice by slaughtering or floating animal into the sea. It was affected by bhairava leading to Shaktism. Sacred animal sacrifice was intended to neutralize nature and as a substitute for human sacrifice, so that it did not sacrifice human.

Nangluk merana ritual was regu-larly held towards year end because a very extreme weather change took place in December. It was before the seventh month in Balinese calendar being prone to natural disasters and disease outbreaks. “Sickness in the seventh month is not affected by leak or Balinese black magic, but pure sickness as a result of climate change. It is a sickness caused by one of the daiweika dhuka namely sickness due to deity, ourselves and our inadvertency,” he said.

Hindu community in Bali drove away global warming by nangluk marana ritual in which in Hinduism it was called detya (effect of feral solar heat). This Detya was portrayed as a great giant with prominence. The poorly maintained environment would trigger Denawa or great flood-ing disaster. “Organizing the nangluk merana ritual should be accompanied with environmental conservation,” he added.

“The Bali gubernatorial elec-tion positively supported the economic growth due to more economic cycles in which the people’s consumption will in-crease,” said the Head of BPS Bali, Gde Suarsa, in Denpasar.

He said the activities of po-litical party ahead of the Bali gubernatorial election showed a visible impact on the economic growth in the coming period. The impact of this event was expected to support the eco-nomic growth by 1 percent.

“The Bali gubernatorial elec-tion has an economic impact because there is movement or community mobilization and other activities en masse. However, it is insignificant and estimated to have impact less than 1 percent on the economic growth,” he said.

Other than the impact of the regional leader election, the construction of some infra-structures to support the imple-mentation of the APEC Summit 2013 that would take place in Bali, said Gde Suarsa, also en-couraged the economic growth in the construction sector.

“At the same time, it also in-creased the demand for building materials, particularly minerals which in turn encouraged the growth of quarrying sector. This sector grew by 16.46 per-cent due to the growth in the construction sector driving the increase in the demand for sup-porting material such as stone and sand,” he explained.

According to him, in general the economic growth of Bali for the first quarter of 2013 was better than the last year’s eco-

nomic condition. The economy of Bali grew 6.71 percent over the same period in 2012. The structure of GRDP was still dominated by the use of house-hold consumption, government consumption and Gross Do-mestic Fixed Capital Forma-tion (PMTDB) respectively contributing to the total Gross Regional Domestic Product at 55.71 percent, 13.80 percent and 36.73 percent.

“Spatially, the greatest con-tribution forming the Bali’s economy in the first quarter was contributed by the Badung County at 25.16 percent and Denpasar at 21.08 percent. The biggest source of growth was contributed by Denpasar City (1.53 percent) and Badung County (1.52 percent),” he said. (kmb27)

That was little comfort to con-sumers struggling to find toilet paper on Wednesday. “This is the last straw,” said Manuel Fagun-des, a shopper hunting for tissue in downtown Caracas. “I’m 71 years old and this is the first time I’ve seen this.”

One supermarket visited by The Associated Press in the capi-tal on Wednesday was out of toilet paper. Another had just received a fresh batch, and it quickly filled up with shoppers as the word spread.

“I’ve been looking for it for two weeks,” said Cristina Ramos. “I was told that they had some here and now I’m in line.” Econo-mists say Venezuela’s shortages stem from price controls meant to make basic goods available to the poorest parts of society and the government’s controls on foreign currency.

“State-controlled prices — prices that are set below market-clearing price — always result in shortages. The shortage problem will only get worse, as it did over the years in the Soviet Union,” said Steve Hanke, professor of economics at Johns Hopkins University.

President Nicolas Maduro, who was selected by the dying Hugo Chavez to carry on his “Bolivarian revolution,” claims that anti-government forces,

including the private sector, are causing the shortages in an effort to destabilize the country.

The government this week an-nounced it would import 760,000 tons of food and 50 million rolls of toilet paper.

Commerce Minister Alejandro Fleming blamed the shortage of toilet tissue on “excessive de-mand” built up as a result of “a media campaign that has been generated to disrupt the country.”

“The revolution will bring the country the equivalent of 50 mil-lion rolls of toilet paper,” he was quoted as saying Tuesday by state news agency AVN. “We are going to saturate the market so that our people calm down.”

Finance Minister Nelson Me-rentes said the government was also addressing the lack of foreign currency, which has resulted in the suspension of foreign supplies of raw materials, equipment and spare parts to Venezuelan compa-nies, disrupting their production. “We are making progress ... we have to work very hard,” Merentes told reporters Wednesday.

Many factories operate at half capacity because the currency controls make it hard for them to pay for imported parts and mate-rials. Business leaders say some companies verge on bankruptcy because they cannot extend lines of credit with foreign suppliers.

Merentes said the government had met the U.S. dollar requests of some 1,500 small- and medium-sized companies facing supply problems, and was reviewing requests from a similar number of larger companies.

Chavez imposed currency con-trols a decade ago trying to stem capital flight as his government expropriated large land parcels and dozens of businesses.

BEIJING - Police in southern China detained a man early Thurs-day who is suspected of calling in fake bomb threats that grounded five domestic flights the previous day. The man was detained at a rental home in the city of Dongguan, police in the southern hub of Shenzhen said in an online statement.

sible motive. They identified the suspect by his surname, Wang, and said he is 26, unemployed and from the autonomous northern territory of Inner Mongolia.

He is accused of making threats Wednesday against five flights headed to Shenzhen and Xi’an from other cities, including Bei-jing, Nanjing and Shanghai. The flights were operated by Shenzhen Airlines, China Eastern Airlines,

and Juneyao Airlines. The crime is punishable by up to 15 years in prison. Last year, a man in Dong-guan who made a fake bomb threat to delay the arrival of his creditor received a four-year sentence.

China has undergone a massive expansion in air travel in recent years. Delays, poor airline service and unruly passengers lead to frequent disruptions at airports or aboard flights.

Meanwhile, the permanent regis-tered voters in South Kuta amounted to 60,764 people. If roughly calculated, the people that did not use their right to vote approximately reached 20,603 people.

From the data collected by each subdis-trict, the Pasti-Kerta was superior in four subdistricts namely Meng-wi, Abiansemal, Northern Kuta and Southern Kuta. Meanwhile, Puspayoga-Sukrawan (PAS) package won in Petang and Kuta subdistrict.

Based on the data collected from each subdistrict, in Petang subdistrict PAS package acquired 10,383 votes, while Pasti-Kerta got 8,846 votes. In Northern Kuta, PAS earned 16,832 votes, while Pasti-Kerta earned 21,734 votes. In Kuta, PAS was superior with the achievement of 13,219 votes, while Pasti-Kerta attained 7,262 votes. In Mengwi, PAS earned 28,567 votes, while Pasti-Kerta won 45,294 votes. Then, in Southern Kuta, PAS gained

19,512 votes, while Pasti-Kerta gained 20,595 votes. In Abianse-mal subdistrict, PAS got 27,332 votes and Pasti-Kerta won 30,463 votes. Overall, pursuant to the interim results the Pasti-Kerta package won in Badung with 134,194 votes, while PAS gained 115,645 votes.

When confirmed the results of the vote, Chairman of the Badung Electoral Commission, I Wayan Jondra, said his party was still unable to give the data of vote acquisition in Badung. Ac-cording to him, the commission did not make counting through quick count. The vote counting at village level would be done on Thursday, while at subdistrict level was after that. Each level of counting was given the time for two days.

Meanwhile, I Ketut Sudikerta, deputy governor candidate voted at polling station 10 at Pecatu vil-lage, precisely at SDN 4 Pecatu primary school at Kangin hamlet.

Sudikerta and family went to polling station on foot from his house at Kauh hamlet. At the poll-ing station, the Pasti-Kerta pack-age won 284 votes, while PAS package only got 135 votes and 2 votes were declared invalid.

After giving his vote, Sudik-erta stated the implementation of gubernatorial election in Badung took place in peaceful atmo-sphere. In general, the situation in Badung was conducive. He also expressed his gratitude to the people of Bali addressing the democratic event with together-ness.

He affirmed whatever the out-come would be, his party claimed to be ready to receive. Losing and winning was a reasonable thing. If losing, his party would be ready to respect the results of the guber-natorial election. Meanwhile, if he won, he would take the other candidate to realize the vision and mission for the sake of people’s welfare. (kmb25)

As monitoring made at polling station 14 at Satria hamlet, Bungkulan village, from Wednesday morning residents had come to polling station in traditional costumes. Meanwhile, Sukrawan and his wife Jro Made Sri Kusuma Yantiari with family were busy preparing for the vote in the Bali gubernatorial election 2013. Previously, they worship at family temple to invoke blessings.

Precisely at 08:00 am Sukrawan with Sri Kusuma Yantiari went on foot to polling station 14, located just a few meters from his home. On arriving at poll-ing station, Sukrawan and his wife Sri Kusuma Yantiari directly submitted the invitation letter and voter card to voting committee officer. He then received a ballot sheet and headed straight for voting booth. After giving his vote, he showed off the punched ballot to media crew monitoring the voting at polling station.

After the voting, Sukrawan explained the steps of Bali gubernatorial election had been going on well. Related to results, he did not too question. Whatever the results would be, obviously it was the will of God. “Whoever will win, I am resigned to it. Most importantly, the winner is for the future progress of Bali,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Regent of Buleleng Putu Agus Suradnyana also directly monitored a number of polling stations after giving his voting right. He monitored the election by riding a motorcycle to polling station 04 at Astina village. At the polling station, the regent directly monitored and had discussion with local voting committee. Besides, he had also asked for an explanation regarding the avail-ability of logistics for the Bali gubernatorial election. JERUSALEM — Orthodox Christians visiting the Holy Land often return home with more than just spiritual memories. Many drop by a centuries-old tattoo parlor in Jerusalem’s Old City, inking themselves with a permanent reminder not only of their pilgrimage but also of devotion to their faith.

35-year-old woman, who gave her name as Mebrat, said.

Anton Razzouk, the family’s 72-year-old patriarch, says the business can be traced back to a Coptic ancestor who traveled by camel and donkey from Egypt to Jerusalem for a pilgrimage about 300 years ago and decided to stay.

Today, the Razzouk business is the oldest tattoo parlor in the Old City catering to Christian tourists. Razzouk says that up until the 1950’s his father’s business was unchallenged and that he was the only one in the Old City, though a handful of competitors have sprouted up since then.

The art form was passed on from father to son and countless pilgrims have returned home over the cen-turies with the markings. Razzouk said his father, Jacob, tattooed Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie during a pilgrimage to Jerusalem, as well as hundreds of allied troops stationed in the region during World War II. He said the markings remind the faithful not to sin.

“A tattoo on the hand is the best

certificate of pilgrimage because it stays there forever. It stays until the person is dead. It stays with him until the grave,” said Razzouk.

Whereas Judaism and Islam prohibit marking the body, for

Orthodox Christian denomina-tions like Armenians, Syrians, Ethiopians and Copts, tattoos are both decorative and a sign of faith. Roman Catholicism does not ban tattooing, but the practice is not as

400 pilgrims each year. His service is so popular that the family often goes to nearby hotels to tattoo travelers as well.

Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is con-sidered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Based on monitoring of Bali Post, the of-ficers of polling station coming to pick up the votes to Sanglah Hospital were from the polling station (TPS) 11 and 12 Denpasar. Those offi-cers arrived around 12:30 p.m. Afterward, the officers itinerated around the Sanglah Hospital. However, due to restricted time not all treatment rooms could be visited. The rooms visited were only Wing Amerta, Anggrek, Pudak, Cempaka, Jempiring and Angsoka Room.

Aside from the time constraints, only a few of the patients and patient attendants carried the C-6 letter as one of the requirement to vote, so that the vote collected only came to tens of pieces whereas the total vote at Sanglah Hos-pital was estimated to reach 1,000.

Nyoman Reti from Tabanan, for instance, claimed to be surprised when seeing the officer of roving polling station came to Sanglah Hospital. Unfortunately, due to lack of information, Reti did not bring along her

C-6 letter as a requirement to vote. “I do not know if there will be a roving polling station. If only I had information, I would take the C-6 letter before waiting for my sick family here,” she deplored.

A member of Bali Electoral Commission, Ketut Udi Prayudi, who came to patients and patient attendants in person at Sanglah Hos-pital, said that in order to vote the residents were absolutely recommended to bring along their C-6 letter and identity card. Only a few patients and patient attendants at Sanglah Hospital brought along such requirement. As admitted by Udi, it happened due to lack of information. “Actually, the socialization has been made. Perhaps, there is a little miscom-munication. This should become a lesson to be fixed in the future,” he said. Singaraja (Bali Post)—To secure the marine area from any damage, the residents of Penuk-

tukan village made a perarem or customary agreement. It contained the confirmation to residents about what they could and could not do as well as what could not be done in the marine area.

Headman of Penuktukan, Yudi Arisandi, said the customary agreement was prepared at the initiative of local residents of Penuktukan village. The initiative came up because the marine areas such as coral reefs had suffered damage in the 1980s. Now, after undertaking various movements of repair, the marine areas could have been recovered from the damage. In order the marine area would no longer turn damaged, residents finally took the initiative to make the customary agreement.

In the customary agreement was mentioned the administrative and customary village managed the three zones in the marine areas, consist-ing of the core zone, buffer zone and utilization zone. Core zone was a preservation area of coral reef consisting of three diving spots.

For core zone, the village put up a sign by means of a red flag. To that end, the residents were not allowed to do any activity related to catching fish in the area among the red flags.

Meanwhile, the distance of buffer zone was 50 meters from the core zone. At the zone, the residents were allowed to do fish catching on a limited basis, namely only angling. Residents were only allowed to catch fish in the zone of utilization, provided that they did not use any chemicals or explosives.

What about the sanctions? Headman Yudi said the matter of sanctions had not been set forth. “With this customary agreement, we want the residents to understand about the marine conserva-tion,” he said. (kmb15)

“Pee Mak Phra Khanong” is based on folklore about the ghost of a woman who died in childbirth and the unsuspecting husband who returns from war to live with his family. Past movie adaptations focused more on the lovelorn ghost Mae Nak and her tragic tale, but the new film tells its story through Pee Mak, the

simple-hearted husband, and the friends who try in vain to tell him his wife’s secrets.

With a budget of 35 million baht ($1.1 million), the summer blockbuster has collected 560 million baht ($18.8 mil-lion) in Bangkok and major cities, beat-ing the previous nationwide tally of 550

million baht ($18.47 million US) set by the 2001 historical epic “Suriyothai.”

It also brought a buzz to the movie scene in Thailand, a location haven for recent foreign productions like “Hang-over II,” the low-budget hit “Lost in Thai-land” that unexpectedly became China’s highest-grossing film, and “Only God Forgives” starring Ryan Gosling, which will open in cinemas this year.

“Pee Mak” pitches a Thai legend of a spooky ghost against modern-day comedy and pop culture references, using its jokes and thrills to transcend the usual young, urban middle class audience of the film studio GTH and entertain everyone.

Instead of seeing a vengeful ghost chase after anyone who attempted to tell her husband she was no longer alive, the audience of “Pee Mak” gets to enjoy a story of star-crossed lovers played by Thai-German heartthrob Ma-rio Maurer (pronounced Mao-RUHR’) and 21-year-old rising star Davika Hoorne (pronounced DA-vi-GAA’ Ho-NAY’).

The horror comedy opened on March 28 with 21.2 million baht ($714,000), the second best first-day performance ever by a Thai movie.

“I had a feeling during filming that it was going to be good, but I never thought it would get as much as 500 million or 600 million baht. This is way beyond expectation,” said 33-year-old director Banjong Pisanthanakun who built up his fame from co-directing “Shutter,” a 2004 horror blockbuster that was remade by Hollywood in 2008. “We knew we got the ingredients right and that it was going to work because even when we filmed it, it was very hilarious.” Critics say the presentation of the movie was crucial in its overwhelming success.

NEW DELHI — Indian actor Sanjay Dutt has arrived at a court in Mumbai to surrender and begin serving a prison sen-tence for a weapons conviction linked to a deadly terror attack in the city in 1993.

Starting Thursday, the Bollywood star is to spend 3 1/2 years in prison. India’s Supreme Court sentenced Dutt in March to five years in prison for illegal posses-sion of weapons supplied by mafia bosses linked to the terror attack, which killed

257 people in India’s financial capital and entertainment hub.

The 53-year-old actor served 18 months in jail before being released on bail in 2007 pending an appeal. The Supreme Court re-duced his prison sentence to five years from the six-year term initially handed down.
