Page 13Page 8Years in the making, producers say it is the

first full-length feature film with a Hollywood director and actors to be shot in the country since the 1959 revolution. Due to decades of ill will between the two countries and Wash-ington’s 52-year-long embargo, other movies ostensibly set here, such as “The Godfather Part II” and 1990’s “Havana,” were filmed in stand-in locations like the Dominican Republic.

“It was an absolute passion to actually make it in Cuba where everything that is in the script happened, where the finca (farm) is where (Hemingway) lived, where his boat was, all the spots from the Morro castle to Cojimar where he fished,” director Bob Yari said. “It’s all here, so trying to duplicate it somewhere else was not very ap-pealing.”

Shooting began in March and wrapped over the weekend on the joint Canadian-Cuban-American production, with the island’s gov-ernmental film institute known as ICAIC providing location support, period costumes and local actors.

“Papa” came to Cuba under a U.S. Treasury Department license exempting it from most embargo restrictions. The film’s makers said there was a cap on how much they could spend, but would not say how much or release overall budget figures.

For licensing purposes the movie qualified as a documentary, since

it depicts a firsthand account of real events that took place here. So it’s unlikely just any Hollywood blockbuster would get the same permission in the future.

Though the title derives from the Nobel Prize-winning novelist’s nickname, the movie is based on an autobiographical script by Denne Bart Petitclerc, who is played by Giovanni Ribisi (“Avatar,” ‘’Saving Private Ryan”). Hem-ingway is portrayed by theater and screen vet-eran Adrian Sparks. Petitclerc was abandoned by his father as a young boy, fell in love with Hemingway’s writing and later came to see him as a father figure.

NEW YORK — “Avatar” actor Sam Worthington is on track to get his New York assault case dismissed after being accused of punching a photog-rapher, who also was arrested.

The Australian actor was due in court Thursday. But electronic court records show the misdemeanor case was resolved April 8 with an agree-ment that it will be dismissed if Wor-thington stays out of trouble for six months. The Daily News first reported on the development.

Worthington’s lawyer, Stacey Richman, confirmed Tuesday the case was set for dismissal. Manhattan prosecutors declined to comment. The arrangement is common for first-time misdemeanor arrests.

Worthington says he was protect-ing his girlfriend after photographer Sheng Li tried to trip her Feb. 23; Li says Worthington attacked him. Pros-ecutors offered the same deal to Li but he turned it down.

HAVANA — Rebels allied with a young Fidel Castro burst into the street outside Havana’s Government Palace as soldiers loyal to strongman Fulgen-cio Batista rain gunfire from above. Steps away, Ernest Hemingway and a young journalist friend dive for cover behind a parked car. An international film crew in recent weeks has been re-enacting this and other historic scenes in the streets of Havana for “Papa,” a biopic about the budding friendship between Hemingway and the reporter in the turbulent Cuba of the 1950s.

EvEry Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is con-sidered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Located at Jalan Bakungsari, Kuta, this restaurant has the open air concept and overlooks directly to garden and pool view. It is strategically located just 5 min-utes away from Ngurah Rai International Airport. Other than Tommy’s Tavern, there are also other food & beverage facilities such as the Agung Poolside Bar and Raka Sunken Pool Bar.

The name of Tommy’s Restaurant taken from its owner offers free voucher for lunch or dinner. “We give this free voucher to guests staying at our hotel for ten nights. It is a form of appreciation and gratitude for their loyalty,” said Sales Man-ager John Haryadi when met at Tommy’s Restaurant.

Of the existing menus, said John Haryadi, some became the favorite of guests, mostly from Australia. Here, they liked European food such as Fish & Chips, Bimbo Chick, Crispy Chicken and Mushroom Parmigiana. Meanwhile, for Japanese food there were Beef or Chicken Teriyaki Bento, Salmon Teriyaki Bento.

In addition, he explained, his party also offered Chicken Satay, (Chicken or Tuna) Classic Sandwiches served with vegetables and French Fries, Tommy’s Burger, Tommy’s Hot Dogs and Jaffle’s. “Every month, this restaurant offers inter-national food promotion. For those who love Indonesian cuisines, the menu can be requested,” said John Haryadi. (ocha) IBP/Ocha

KUTA - Tommy’s Tavern restaurant at Kuta Beach Club offers various drinks and European food, and of course Oriental and Indo-nesian food at affordable price. There are about 50 more menus with tempting flavors and have been adapted to the tongue of travelers.

The Head of Buleleng Sani-tation and Landscaping Agency, Nyoman Genep, justified the loss of those ornamental plants, Tuesday (May 6).

Those ornamental plants vanished gradually. Even, based on field observation since last month, the total missing or-namental plants reached 79 plants. He admitted the price of the ornamental plants in the Garden of Singaraja Town was quite high in the market. Quiet condition and less supervision were suspected to have caused the loss of several ornamental plants with expensive prices.

For example, the Cycads were known to have been miss-ing last week. In the market, the price range of this plant was between IDR 300,000 and IDR 500,000 per stem. Furthermore, Genep said the loss of ornamen-tal plants in the garden of Singa-raja town reached a total of IDR 15 million. At this moment, his

of risky couples can lead to the increasing proliferation of HIV/AIDS cases which is currently amounting to 8,563 cases in Bali, and particularly Gianyar has reached 583 cases. The acts of revenge carried by risky couples can be in the form of having sex without using a condom.

Based on data on Tuesday (May

6), the number of HIV/AIDS cases in Gianyar was ranked fifth in Bali, after the Badung, Bangli, Buleleng and Denpasar. Secretary of the AIDS Mitigation Com-mission (KPA) of Gianyar, Anak Agung Gde Agung Suardana, said that of a total of 582 cases, 194 cases related to the AIDS with composition of 146 men and 48 women as well as 388 HIV cases with composition of 237 men and

151 women. All this time, in the mitigation

of the HIV/AIDS, the KPA Gi-anyar regularly socialized about the hazards of HIV/AIDS and condom use in the risky areas such as nightclubs. In the matter of MDG achievement in 2015, the mitigation of HIV/AIDS through the Gianyar Health Agency tar-geted 90 risky couples to have been using condom. However, of

the 95 percent of risky couples surveyed, only 12.8 percent were using condoms.

“It definitely requires a hard work of all parties,” said the Head of Gianyar Health Agency, Ida Ayu Cahyani.

Today, the people with HIV/AIDS in Gianyar belonging to the age range of 15-49 amounted to 0.12 percent of the total popula-tion. Such an amount remained

below the limit of the MDG specifying 0.5 percent, but the HIV/AIDS case was like an ice-berg phenomenon, so it should be considered.

By the year 2015, the target of Gianyar government in the HIV/AIDS mitigation was the absence of new infections or cases, there would be no stigma, discrimina-tion and no cases of deaths due to HIV/AIDS. (kmb16)

79 ornamental plants in Singaraja town garden stolenBali Post

SINGArAJA - Indeed, a thief never distinguishes a place, occasion and time to steal. The recent theft targeted the or-namental plants in the central open space of Singaraja Town Park. various ornamental plants were found to have lost and stolen by thief. In details, the plants stolen comprised 79 units, vanished and the offender was not found. The plants having just been planted in the arrangement project by the Sanitation and Landscaping Agency consisted of 22 types of Cycads, 30 yellow broccoli stems, 1 palm tree, 20 Ararea flowers and 6 fan cypress.

party was thinking about a safe way to protect the plants and to avoid another theft occurrence. “When knew the loss of plants when we watering them on the following day. We found the traces if the plants were pulled out and some expensive plants vanished,” said Genep.

Responding to the loss inci-dent of some plants, the Sanita-tion and Landscaping Agency conducted an intensive guard around the garden of Singa-raja town. He said that about three to four officers were on guard every night, while in the next morning seven jani-tors in charge of managing and overseeing the garden. The traders around the Singaraja Town Park were also expected to participate in monitoring the garden if there were suspicious actions.

“Town garden is one of the green open spaces that must be well maintained. Buleleng

society must participate actively in loving it and have a sense of belonging. We exemplify the town garden in Surabaya and Malang where they become the pride of local community. If people start to act nosy, they must be reprimanded or be reported,” he said.

Genep affirmed that the DKP

Buleleng annually allocated a budget worth DIR 15 billion. It was used for garden maintenance activities, waste management and sanitation activities. Daily work-ers usually served as sweeper, where they totally amounted to 431 personnel and spread across 200 points at the corners of the Singa-

raja town. The other workers in-cluded 149 garbage porter as well as 53 ornamental plant attendants. “People are expected to participate in overseeing and maintaining the sanitation and safety of the garden, so the benefits of open space can be perceived together,” he said. (kmb34)

“We want to emphasize to the pub-lic, this is not some distant problem of the future. This is a problem that is af-fecting Americans right now,” Obama told “Today” show weathercaster Al Roker. “Whether it means increased flooding, greater vulnerability to drought, more severe wildfires — all these things are having an impact on Americans as we speak.”

Climate change’s assorted harms “are expected to become increas-ingly disruptive across the nation throughout this century and be-yond,” the National Climate Assess-ment concluded, emphasizing the impact of too-wild weather as well as simple warming.

Still, it’s not too late to prevent the worst of climate change, says the 840-page report, which the Obama ad-ministration is highlighting as it tries to jump-start often-stalled efforts to curb heat-trapping gases. Said White House science adviser John Holdren: “It’s a good-news story about the many opportunities to take cost-effective actions to reduce the damage.”

Reuters SYDNEY - Scientists have

discovered a new strain of avian flu in the Antarctic, after testing a group of Adélie penguins, ac-cording to an Australian-based researcher.

“We found that this virus was unlike anything else detected in the world,” Aeron Hurt of the World Health Organization’s Collabo-rating Centre for Reference and Research on Influenza told Reuters from Melbourne on Tuesday.

The flu virus, H11N2, was found in a small number of mem-bers of a group of Adélie penguins tested at two locations on the Ant-arctic Peninsula, the continent’s northernmost region. It does not, however, appear to cause illness in the birds.

“Probably, in the region we

were sampling, the Antarctic peninsula, it’s most likely that mi-gratory birds are travelling down from North and South America,” Hurt said.

The strain is described in a study published this week in mBio, the online open-access journal of American Society for Microbiology.

Researchers collected swabs from 301 Adélie penguins and blood from 270. Using a labora-tory technique called real-time reverse transcription-PCR to ex-amine the virus’s genetic blueprint, they found avian influenza virus (AIV) genetic material in eight samples - six adult penguins and two chicks.

“I think this particular strain is not a great deal of concern to wildlife health, but what it does show is that this is now definitive

evidence that AIVs do get down to Antarctica,” Hurt said.

Using ferrets, the most com-mon animal for influenza testing, the experiments found the virus did not infect the animal.

“We did some experiments to assess whether the virus has potential for humans to become in-fected...it’s probably unlikely that humans are likely to be infected by this particular virus,” he said.

Two strains of avian flu have occurred in southeast Asia over the past two years - H7N9 and H5N1 - causing deaths among humans and wildlife.

In February, a H10N8 strain previously unknown in humans caused one death in China and in April, an oubreak of bird flu on a California quail farm prompted five key export markets to bar im-ports of poultry from the state.

Federal report: Warming disrupts Americans’ livesAssociated Press Writer

WASHINGTON — Most Americans are already feeling man-made global warming, from heat waves to wild storms to longer allergy seasons. And it is likely to get worse and more expensive, says a new federal report that is heating up political debate along with the temperature. Shortly after the report came out Tuesday, President Barack Obama used several television weathermen to make his point about the bad weather news and a need for action to curb carbon pollution before it is too late.

tion of a congressionally mandated study, gives Obama an opportunity to ground his campaign against cli-mate change in science and numbers, endeavoring to blunt the arguments of those who question the idea and human contributions to such changes. Later this summer, the administration plans to propose new regulations re-stricting gases that come from existing coal-fired power plants.

Not everyone is persuaded.

Some fossil energy groups, con-servative think tanks and Republican senators immediately assailed the re-port as “alarmist.” Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell said Obama was likely to “use the platform to renew his call for a national energy tax. And I’m sure he’ll get loud cheers from liberal elites — from the kind of people who leave a giant carbon footprint and then lecture everybody else about low-flow toilets.”

Since taking office, Obama has not proposed a specific tax on fossil fuel emissions. He has proposed a

system that caps emissions and allows companies to trade carbon pollution credits, but it has failed in Congress.

Republican Sen. David Vitter said the report was supposed to be scientific but “it’s more of a political one used to justify government over-reach.” And leaders in the fossil fuel industry, which is responsible for a large amount of the heat-trapping carbon dioxide, said their energy is

needed and America can’t afford to cut back.

“Whether you agree or disagree with the report, the question is: What are you going to do about it? To us that is a major question,” said Charlie Drevna, president of the American Fuel and Petrochemical Manufacturers. He called the report “overblown.”

The report — which is full of figures, charts and other research-

generated graphics — includes 3,096 footnotes referring to other mostly peer-reviewed research. It was writ-ten by more than 250 scientists and government officials, starting in 2012. A draft was released in January 2013, but this version has been reviewed by more scientists, including twice by the National Academy of Sciences which called it “reasonable,” and “a valuable resource.”

According to him, Bali had to build its own community through tourism that had been grown on the island. So, Balinese people could keep its region. “What given to Sanur in the National Tourism Strategic Area is focused on the provision of space to the SMEs and the community,” he said.

Chairman of the Sanur Develop-ment Foundation (YPS), Ida Bagus Gede Sidharta Putra, said his party had suggested the municipal gov-ernment to create a zoning system which would be used as the tour-ism strategic area. “We hope the municipal government makes a zoning system as first step where people can build and cannot, it is very important. Thus, it can avoid any crowdedness in the future,” he said.

According to him, the zoning would also cover the existence of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises. Even, the Mertasari tourism strategic area was based

Bali PostDENPASAR - The unemploy-

ment rate in Bali until February 2014 reached 1.37 percent or decreased when it is compared to the previous year in February and August respectively reaching 1.83 percent and 1.92 percent.

The amount of labor force in Bali Province up to February 2014 reached 2,410,420 people. This figure increased by 126,520 people compared to the labor force in August 2013, which only came to 2,283,900 people or increased by 26,960 compared to February of the previous year, namely 2,383,460 people.

“The number of working popu-lation in Bali also increased to 2,377,390 people in February 2014 or increased by 135,310 people com-pared to the condition of last August reaching 2,242,080 or increased by 39,680 people compared to the Feb-ruary last year reaching 2,337,710 people,” said Head of Central Statis-

tics Agency (BPS) of Bali, Panusu-nan Siregar, in Denpasar.

Nevertheless, a surge in the num-ber of working population did not trigger unemployment in Bali.

“In keeping with the working pop-ulation, the number of unemployed people also diminished. Last Febru-ary, it was recorded that only 33,030 people were unemployed in Bali. Compared to last August, it declined 41,820 people and the circumstances in February 2013 reached 45,750 people,” he said.

On the other hand, such high-rated labor force, according to the economist from the Undiknas University, Prof. Dr. IB Raka Su-ardana, would lead to an increase in unemployment because the surge was not accompanied by the uptake of job opportunities. Each year, the average of labor force increased. The increase in labor force without being accompanied with proportional absorption of the workforce would increase the

number of unemployed people.“Theoretically, a 1 percent

economic growth will absorb ap-proximately 300,000 labor forces or maximally 400,000. So, it will be impossible to absolutely resolve the unemployment if the economy still revolves around it,” he said.

Apart from triggering unemploy-ment, the high rates of labor force without being poised with job oppor-tunities would have an impact on the increase in poverty. As result of the increase in poverty, it would generate more crimes, vagrants and beggars and increase in depression due to unemployment. To that end, the government was demanded to care-fully make good cooperation with the public (private sector) to create job opportunities. Even, the government needs to incorporate the curriculum through relevant ministries into high school or college students that directed the students to become an entrepreneur, did not apply for job after graduating. The island was getting the biggest por-tion. However, in developing the strategic programs it was required a final spatial plan.

“To prepare the National Tour-ism Strategic Areas, we require a final spatial plan. Without final spatial plan and regional spatial planning, the tourism strategic areas will not happen. On that account, it must be prepared with specified locations,” he said.

He said that National Tourism Strategic Areas would not be made before the relevant regional bylaw had been accomplished. Similarly, his party could not realize the con-

struction of the National Tourism Strategic Areas if the land having been developed as a tourist destina-tion so far was owned by individu-als or communities.

“Likewise, we cannot build on the land not owned by the govern-ment. It has been set forth in the regulation of central government,” he said. (kmb27)

In March, Moscow supported an independence referendum in the Ukrainian peninsula of Crimea, which led to its annexation by Rus-sia. Leaders of the anti-government movement say they plan to hold a referendum on autonomy in the areas of Donetsk and Luhansk, al-though no preparations for the vote have yet been seen.

“We flatly reject this illegal effort to further divide Ukraine,” Kerry told reporters after meeting at the State Department with EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton. “It’s pursuit will create even more problems in the effort to try to de-escalate the situation.” He added: “This is really the Crimea playbook all over again, and no civilized na-tion is going to recognize the results of such a bogus effort.”

Although Russia has de facto control over Crimea, few nations recognize the move. The United States and Europe have hit Russia with sanctions over the annexation and Moscow’s continued destabi-lizing actions in mainly Russian-speaking east Ukraine.

In a nod to the West’s refusal

to recognize Crimea as part of Russia, State Department spokes-woman Jen Psaki on Tuesday responded to a reporter’s question about a potential visit to the region by Russian President Vladimir Putin by saying: “I hope he enjoys his visit to Ukraine.” U.S. officials have said all Ukrainians should vote on their future governance in nationwide elections set for May 25.

President Barack Obama and German Chancellor Angela Merkel said last week they’d move to impose harsher sanctions against Russia if it seeks to disrupt the elections.

Testifying before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, the top U.S. diplomat for Europe, Victoria Nuland, said Tuesday that Russian recognition of another separatist referendum and Russian peacekeepers entering Ukraine would be triggers for the sanctions. If “broad swaths” of Ukraine cannot hold elections, she said, that might be another.

Both Kerry and Ashton lam-basted Russia for failing to abide

by an agreement to de-escalate tensions in the east and threatened that any move by Moscow to annex additional parts of Ukraine would

be met by new sanctions.Such sanctions, they said, would

go beyond penalties already im-posed on Russian officials and

executives close to Putin and apply to entire sectors of the Russian economy, such as defense, finance and energy.

KABUL, Afghanistan — Afghan President Hamid Karzai on Wednes-day toured the site of last week’s horrific landslide in the country’s remote northeast, pledging to pro-vide relief to families displaced by the disaster that killed hundreds of people.

Karzai’s office said he met the victims in the village of Abi Barik in Badakhshan province, where around 700 families were forced to flee their homes due to the pos-sibility of further landslides and flooding.

During the visit, Karzai spoke with villagers being housed in tents and also promised to rebuild homes for the landslide’s survivors.

Aid groups and the government have rushed to the remote province bordering Tajikistan and China with food, shelter and water. But those affected have complained that help has been slow to arrive.

Authorities have yet to provide an exact figure on the number of people killed in the May 2 landslide, and estimates have ranged from 250 to 2,700. Officials say it will be impossible to dig up all the bodies buried deep under a sea of mud.

BANGLI - Calonarang perfor-mance in a series of celebrating the 810th anniversary of the Ban-gli town organized at the Captain Mudita Field, Bangli, Tuesday morning (May 6), was tinged by bloody incidents.

A student named I Made Dwi Mariastrawan alias Dede, 20, was stabbed by strangers in the vicin-ity of the performance. The victim posing a student of Mediterranean Bangli from Pule hamlet, Kawan village, died after suffering stab-bing wounds in the lower part of his right thigh afflicting the arterial vessel. Up to Tuesday afternoon, police were still investigating the

identity of the offender inten-sively.

In addition to Dwi Marias-trawan alias Dede, three other young men also became the vic-tims of the stabbing incident at that dawn namely I Wayan Gede Juliartawan, 21, suffered stabbing wounds on the head and both hands, I Kadek Hendriawan alias Doglas, 19, suffered stabbing wounds at the abdomen, scars in the armpit and arm, and I Wayan Artha Wedana Putra, 25, suffering wounds to fingers of his left hand. The three survivors were equally from Pule hamlet, Kawan village. Subsequently they received inten-sive care in Bangli and Sanglah Hospital, Denpasar.

Chronologically, the bloody stabbing incidents began when the plaintiff I Wayan Artha Wedana Putra came with the three victims to the Captain Mudita Field to watch Calonar-ang show around 11 o’clock on Monday (May 5).

Furthermore, at 00:30 a.m., after the show the plaintiff with the victim Juliartawan was look-ing for the other two companions namely Dede and Doglas. On arriving at the basketball court, the plaintiff saw Dede and Doglas being attacked by two strangers, one of which used a bayonet. At that time, the plaintiff and his companions tried to intervene but the offenders even attacked

Juliartawan so the plaintiff was forced to flee.

Meanwhile, after the incident the ranks of Bangli Police contin-ued to investigate until Tuesday and re-conducted crime scene in-vestigation to uncover the stabbing offender and killing a young man and injuring three others. From the results of crime scene investi-gation, police could not get clues associated with the identity of the offenders. Police only discovered the pools of blood, a handkerchief, a pair of shoes and a black hat considered to belong to the dead. Meanwhile, the evidence in the form the knife alleged to have been used by the offender could not still be found.

“The offenders are still under intensive investigation,” said the Chief of Bangli Police Criminal Investigation, Nyoman Sukanada, with permission from the Ban-gli Police Chief Suswanto. As of Tuesday afternoon, police were still investigating and gathering witnesses for the disclosure of the case.

Meanwhile, from the recogni-tion of the survivors, I Wayan Artha Wedana Putra, the offender was alleged to consist of two per-sons that blindly ran amok with a knife at the victims. At that time, the atmosphere was dimly lit. So, the victim only knew the charac-teristic of the offenders where they were thin-boned. (ina)

Responding to the project worked on care-lessly, local people then complained. One of the residents, Komang Kari, with the address on Jalan Untung Surapati, reported the case to the Regent of Karangasem, I Wayan Geredeg, through a letter.

Chairman of Commission B of the Karangasem House, Nyoman Oka Antara, confirmed on Tuesday (May 6) if Chairman of the House was also forwarded a copy on the report of Komang Kari. Chairman of the House also forwarded the copy of the letter to Chairman of Commission B. Oka Antara said that his party would contact the Head of Public Works Ida Bagus Oka about the project. On the other hand, when IB Oka was repeatedly contacted by phone, he did not answer the call.

Kari admitted to feel concerned with the sidewalk improvement project. It was financed with a fund worth IDR 2 billion. He was concerned because the gutter was covered with sidewalks with the depth of 1.7 meters spreading from Bintang Kejora Kindergarten to SMPN 2 Karangasem junior high school. Around the 1980s, the subdistrict head of Karangasem, (late) Ketut Arga, asked to make a deep gutter in order the people liv-ing on the left and right side of the road could dispose their wastewater by pipeline into the gutter. The courtyard of residents was much lower than the road.

However, the gutter had long been getting

shallower due to sediment, trash and other falling materials. When sidewalk improve-ment project was ongoing at this time, the materials in the gutter were not dredged or removed. As the gutter was increasingly shal-low, Kari worried it kindled puddles in the gutter or even exploded as being unable to accommodate the runoff during heavy rains. When rained heavily, added Oka Antara, the flood from Budakeling and Padangkerta flowed on Jalan Untung Surapati.

Puddles in the gutter covered with walk-ways were feared to be mosquito breeding.

Kari said that dengue fever had claimed many victims from the area of Jalan Untung Surapati. If there were cases of dengue fever from the local hamlet and Health Agency wanted to do fogging, the personnel would get difficulty because the puddles becoming the mosquito breeding were in the gutter covered with sidewalks. “Fogging is only carried out in the house of residents, while the source of mosquito breeding was untouched,” he said.

In addition, as the gutter or drainage channel was higher than the settlement, Kari

worried when later on the roadside had been completely occupied by houses or shop hous-es, there would be no water sewer to drain the flooding. Even, if flood happened, the houses of resident would be flooded. People would be unable to drain their wastewater into the gutter because the gutter was higher than the house area of the residents.

“When the flooding happens and inundates our house because there is no sewer, who will help us? Meanwhile, we have stayed at the roadside since 1978,” said Kari in his letter. (013)

WASHINGTON — After watch-ing China narrow the U.S. lead as the world’s largest economy, Americans might be tempted to cheer signs that the Chinese economy might be stumbling. Any schadenfreude would be short-sighted.

In an interconnected global economy, bad news for one economic superpower is typically bad news for another — even a fierce rival.

“It hurts,” says Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody’s Analytics. “China is the second-largest economy on the planet. If growth slows there, it affects everybody.”

Zandi estimates that each 1 percent-age point drop in China’s economic growth causes as much damage to the

U.S. economy as a $20-a-barrel increase in oil prices: It shaves 0.2 percentage point off annual U.S. growth.

That isn’t catastrophic. But to regain its full health nearly five years after the Great Recession officially ended, the U.S. economy needs whatever help it can get.

A sharp slowdown in China also threatens the 28-member European Union, which outweighs even the United States if measured as a single economy. China is the EU’s second-largest export market behind the United States.

A stream of economic news from Chi-na has been rattling financial markets. Chinese manufacturing slowed in April for a fourth straight month. A Chinese lending bubble, driven by overbuilding, is stirring alarm. China’s growth in the January-March quarter slowed to 7.4

percent compared with a year earlier. It was its slowest quarterly growth since the 2008-2009 global crisis.

For most economies, 7.4 percent growth would qualify as explosive. The U.S. economy hasn’t grown as fast as 7 percent since 1984. But for China, a still-developing economy that clocked double-digit growth through much of the 2000s, the latest figures qualify as a slump.

And Americans and Chinese are linked ever more tightly economically.

They buy each other’s products, in-vest in each other’s markets, visit each other’s tourist attractions. U.S.-China trade in goods last year totaled $562 billion. China is the United States’ second-biggest trading partner and the No. 1 source of U.S. imports, according to the Congressional Research Service.

Under the declaration, the 47 countries have committed to “swiftly” pass new do-mestic laws that will allow them to collect information on all bank accounts and auto-matically exchange it with other participat-ing countries.

They must also call on their financial centres “to implement the new single global standard without delay”.

The list of signatories includes all 34 members of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), a club of developed nations that spearheaded the initiative.

That includes Switzerland, Liechtenstein and the British jurisdictions of Jersey and Guernsey -- all which have been criticised for high levels of banking secrecy in the past, laying them open to accusations that they serve as havens for tax evaders.

The list also includes Luxembourg, even though it is blocking transparency initiatives within the European Union.

The OECD has also secured the partici-pation of 18 non-OECD nations, including the key international financial centre of Singapore.

The new global standard was described as “a real game-changer” by OECD chief Angel Gurria when it was unveiled in February.

Previously, countries would have to re-quest data on suspected tax cheats using a process that was often complicated and some countries were uncooperative.

The United States was the catalyst for the change with its so-called FATCA law which requires international banks to provide data on accounts held abroad by its citizens and companies or face sanctions.

The next step, the new declaration states, is for the OECD’s fiscal committee to provide within the coming months clear guidelines on how the standard should be put into practice, and come up with technical solutions to make sure it is effective.

A “Global Forum” is also due to be set up to monitor and evaluate individual countries’ efforts.

Developed in cooperation with the Group of 20 gathering of advanced and leading emerging markets, the system should come into force in 2015.

“This new standard on automatic exchange of information will ramp up international tax co-operation, putting governments back on a more even footing as they seek to protect the integrity of their tax systems and fight tax evasion,” Gurria said in a statement in February.

AntaraNUSA DUA - Foreign Affairs Minister

Marty Natalegawa voiced his opinion of having no objections to Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott’s absence in the Open Government Partnership (OGP) conference held in Bali on May 6-7. “We have invited all the heads of state, including Australia, to the OGP conference. I am not aware of the reason behind the absence (of Abbott), only the Australian government can explain that,” stated the minister after attending the opening ceremony of the OGP Conference in Nusa Dua area.

However, the minister pointed out that there are several issues that Indonesia and Australia need to settle, such as the six steps toward normalization of bilateral relations following the wire-tapping scandal allegedly conducted by Australia. Another issue to be worked out is the asylum seekers who try to illegally enter Australia’s territory through Indonesian waters.

“What Australia has been doing during the past months is clearly contrary to a com-prehensive solution in handling the issue of asylum seekers. Australia seems to pass on its problem to its neighboring countries,” Marty claimed, arguing that the issue of asylum

seekers is a global problem, which needs to be handled collectively by related countries.

Earlier, Australia’s public broadcaster, the ABC, reported that Prime Minister Tony Abbott has abandoned a planned trip to Indo-nesia due to an “on-water operation,” which the Australian Government sources believe has the potential to cause “embarrassment” to Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.

Yudhoyono had invited Abbott to attend the OGP conference in Bali, next week, and plans were in place to make it happen. But, the trip was cancelled as a current asylum seeker opera-tion was underway.

Consistent with the policy under Operation Sovereign Borders, the Government will not di-vulge details about the “on-water operation.”

“The prime minister was hoping to attend the OGP conference in Bali, next week, at the invitation of President Yudhoyono,” a spokesperson for Abbott noted in a statement on May 3.

“The prime minister is grateful for the in-vitation. Unfortunately, the prime minister is unable to attend at this time, and he hopes to visit Indonesia to meet with the president at a mutually convenient time,” the spokesperson emphasized.

On Tuesday (May 6), the green space in the form of landscaping garden located in the north of the market looks slovenly. Grass and plants of the landscaping garden were not maintained at all. Even, a number of plastic wastes adorned the small green space on the west to the east, until reaching the space in front of the Melanting Temple.

Renovation of the market in 2013 had not been followed up with the arrangement of landscaping garden and the green space seemed to be neglected. Since the inauguration of the market on February 16, 2013, there was no clarity which party was doing the arrangement. Having been planted by the contractor, there was no maintenance. Grass had been growing increasingly high, and some plants were neatly arranged.

Regarding to the status of the market, it was the property of lo-cal government. Even, the traders were charged with levies every day through the existing employees in

charge of the office of the Ubud Mar-ket. There was no clarity which party was responsible for the maintenance of landscaping gardens at the Ubud Market whether it should be done by the office of Ubud Market or by lo-cal government itself. In this regard, there was still a recrimination related to the authority.

Meanwhile, based on information of residents, after the renovation of the Ubud Art Market, the landscap-ing garden located in the north was never maintained. Except, there was a social action undertaken by a number of tourism organizations at particular time, explained a resident, Made Karja, who was in charge of the market every day.

All this time, the landscaping garden in Ubud Art Market is un-noticed by the authorities. As a tourist destination, the sanitation and convenience should be con-sidered because it could have an impact on the tourism image and the area. (kmb16)

JAKARTA - US mining giant Newmont said Wednesday it would likely cease production at its Indonesian gold and copper mine in June and send most employees on leave due to controversial new rules gov-erning the sector.

Southeast Asia’s top economy introduced a ban on the export of some unprocessed minerals in January, as well as higher taxes for some com-modities that can still be shipped out of the country.

Copper concentrate, a major export for Newmont and its US peer Freeport McMoRan, was exempt from the ban but the companies still faced paying the new, higher taxes on shipments of the product.

Newmont says the new levies conflict with its original agreements in Indonesia and has been engaged in talks with the government.

The Indonesian unit of Newmont has not been able to send shipments overseas since the new rules were introduced, and the talks are aimed at reaching a deal so they can export again.

On Wednesday the unit said there was still no breakthrough, and its copper concentrate storage facilities at the Batu Hijau gold and copper mine would be full by the end of May.

“The Batu Hijau mine... expects to ramp down production on or about June 1, unless ongoing discussions with the government lead to completion of the process to secure an initial export permit,” it said in a statement.

“Once the mine’s copper concentrate storage is filled, (the company) will move to cease mining and milling.” It added that most employees at the mine, on Sumbawa island in central Indonesia, would be placed on leave at reduced pay starting in early June.

“This is a very unfortunate and difficult situation for all of us, as it will disrupt the lives of our 8,000 employees and contractors,” said Martiono Hadianto, head of Newmont’s Indonesian unit.

The new rules governing the mining sector are aimed at forcing for-eign companies to smelt raw minerals in resource-rich Indonesia and keep more profits from the sector in the country.

But the industry has criticised their introduction as badly planned and analysts say the move has added to increased business uncertainty.

“I am called as a witness in Mah-fud Suroso’s case. I do not know who he is. It seems that when there is a new suspect, I am summoned,” Dault stated on Wednesday.

He was the sports and youth affairs minister between 2004 and 2009 and was succeeded by Andi Alifian Mallarangeng.

Besides Mahfud Suroso, other suspects in the Hambalang cor-ruption case are former chairman of the Democratic Party Anas Ur-banigrum, Teuku Bagus Mokhamad Noor of PT Adhi Karya, Andi Malarangeng, and Deddy Kusdi-nar of the sports and youth affairs ministry.

Deddy Kusdinar was sentenced to six years imprisonment and fined Rp300 million.

The state incurred losses amount-ing to Rp464.391 billion due to the

Hambalang project corruption case.

In November 2013, the KPK named Mahfud Suroso, the direc-tor of PT Dutasari Citralaras, as a suspect in a graft case centering on the construction of the Hambalang sports complex in Bogor, West Java.

“MS (Mahfud Suroso) as the president director of PT Dutasari has allegedly violated article 2 (1) or article 3 of Law No.31/1999 on corruption eradication in reference to Law No.20/2001. MS is also charged with article 55 (1) point 1 of the Criminal Code (KUHP),” claimed KPK spokesman Johan Budi SP at the anti-graft body head-quarters in Jakarta, last year.

He pointed out that Mahfud was named a suspect after the KPK in-vestigators conducted further probe

on the alleged corruption reported during the construction of the sports center in Hambalang.

Johan stated that based on a case explanation on November 3, the investigators obtained new evidence that was strong enough for the commission to name MS as a suspect.

“After expanding the investi-gation, the KPK found evidence that was adequate enough. On November 4, the KPK issued a sprindik (a letter authorizing a full investigation into a case) for MS,” he noted.

Mahfud has been questioned as a witness on several occasions due to his position as the director of Dutasari, an Adhi Karya sub-contractor involved in the Hamba-lang project worth Rp1.2 trillion (US$105.6 million).

AntaraJAKARTA - Jakarta Governor Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has voiced his

plans to meet President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono to seek permission for a leave as he intends to run for presidency.

“I have planned to personally meet the president to ask for a leave permit,” he stated at the City Hall on Wednesday.

He remarked that administratively, he has already submitted the leave application to the president with its copy sent to the Ministry of Home Affairs.

“Administratively, all the necessary documents have been sent. But, I will meet the president in person to ask for permission,” he empha-sized.

Jokowi from the Indonesia Democratic Party Struggle (PDIP) party however did not divulge further details about how long his leave will last in order to follow the process of presidential election scheduled on July 9.

According to the Government Regulation Number 18, 2013, regional heads that will take part in the presidential election campaign must ask for a leave, the application of which must be submitted 12 days before the registration of the candidates end.

The General Election Commission (KPU) is scheduled to start reg-istration of the presidential candidates from May 18, 2014.

According to the Ministry of Home Affairs Regulation Number 13, 2009, if the request for a permit is met, a presidential decree will be issued for it to make the governor inactive until the KPU declares the elected president later.

They have returned Shinawatra-led or linked governments to power in every election since 2001.

Thaksin lives overseas to avoid jail for corruption convictions, but is accused of running the country by proxy through his sister.

The ruling Puea Thai party has accused the court of railroading through Yingluck’s case to satisfy its political bias against the Shinawatras.

The Constitutional Court oversees cases of violations of Thailand’s charter, which was rewritten after Thaksin’s removal.

In 2008, the court forced two Thaksin-linked prime ministers from office.

It also annulled the February election called by Yingluck to shore up her flagging administration, citing widespread disruption by opposition protesters.

Yingluck is also to find out over the coming days if she will be indicted by anti-graft officials for neglect of duty charges in connection with a costly rice subsidy scheme. An unfavourable ruling could also see her impeached by the senate and banned from politics for five years.

Kim said one of the survivors was accidentally listed twice, and he blamed the other mistake on an inac-curate report by a passenger. Another coast guard officer said the passenger falsely told authorities he had been traveling with someone who had sneaked on board and therefore was not on the ship’s list of passengers. The officer spoke on condition of ano-nymity because she wasn’t authorized to speak to media on the matter. She said the passenger later told officials he gave wrong information because he had “lost track of things.”

Kim also said there are two more missing passengers than authorities previously knew about. Both are Chinese nationals. That change

raises the number of people feared dead to 304. So far 269 bodies have been recovered, and divers are searching for 35 more people. More than 80 percent of the dead are stu-dents from a single high school near Seoul who were on a trip to southern Jeju island.

Families of the victims and many other South Koreans have been highly critical of the government’s handling of the rescue effort, and the regulatory failures that may have al-lowed the disaster to happen. Shortly after the sinking, officials announced that 368 people were saved, giving scores of families false hope. There is evidence not only that the ship was overloaded with cargo, but that

the agency responsible for ensur-ing passenger safety has incorrect information about how much the ship could safely carry.

The lengthy, difficult underwater search for bodies off South Korea’s southern coast has deepened the an-guish of families of missing people, who have been camping out at a nearby port waiting for the news of their loved ones.

Prime Minister Chung Hong-won told a Cabinet Council meeting that officials must work with “resolve to finish searches” by Saturday to help ease the suffering of relatives of missing people. Tidal currents, a frequent obstacle for divers, are forecast to be weak until then.

BEIRUT — Lebanese lawmakers affiliated with a Hezbollah-led alliance boycotted a third round of voting in parliament on Wednesday, once again foiling an attempt to elect the country’s new president. It was the third time in less than a month that Lebanon’s legislators failed to elect a president — making it increasingly unlikely the nation’s feuding politicians will be able to choose a candidate for the country’s top Christian post before President Michel Suleiman’s term expires on May 25.

Lebanon is deeply split along sectarian and ideological lines and divisions have worsened because of the civil war raging next door in Syria. Lawmakers have been unable to agree on a compromise candidate for the presidency.

The Shiite Muslim Hezbollah group and its allies have boycotted the voting, insisting that politicians agree on a consensus candidate to be elected ahead of time. Failure to agree on a consensus president could make things harder for the government at a crucial time while it struggles with sectarian violence and an influx of over a million Syrian refugees.

The group’s opponents have accused it of obstructing the democratic pro-cess. The Lebanese are split in two camps, one supportive of Syrian President Bashar Assad and the other supportive of the rebels fighting to oust him.

According to Lebanon’s sectarian-based power-sharing system, the president must be a Maronite Christian, the prime minister a Sunni Muslim and the parliament speaker a Shiite Muslim.

A two-thirds quorum of the legislature’s 128 members is required for an electoral session. Wednesday’s vote could not be held as dozens of lawmak-ers, many of them allied with Hezbollah, did not show up. Only 73 lawmak-ers attended the session. With no quorum, Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri adjourned the session and scheduled a fourth round for May 15.

GAUHATI, India — Officials say five bodies have been recov-ered from a river near an area where more than 30 Muslims were killed last week in the worst ethnic violence in India’s remote

northeast in two years.Local magistrate Vinod Sa-

chan says the bodies were found Wednesday in the Barpeta district of Assam state, raising the death toll from the violence to 38. Two other bodies were found Tuesday.

Barpeta is next to Baksa dis-

trict, where police said gunmen from the Bodo tribe, which has long accused Muslims of entering India illegally from neighboring Bangladesh, went on a rampage, setting Muslim homes ablaze and firing indiscriminately at civilians.

S. Korea lowers survivor count in ferry disaster

SEOUL, South Korea — Three weeks after South Korea’s ferry tragedy, the government on Wednesday said it miscounted the number of survivors, a stunning error and the latest of many missteps that have eroded the nation’s confidence in its leaders. Coast guard chief Kim Suk-kyoon said only 172 people survived the April 16 sinking of the ferry Sewol — not 174, as the government had been saying since April 18.

MADRID - Australian Open champion Stanislas Wawrinka crashed to a shock second-round defeat at the Madrid Open on Tuesday when he was upset 1-6 6-2 6-4 by qualifier Dominic Thiem. Third-seeded Swiss Wawrinka, who followed up his title in Melbourne with victory at last month’s Monte Carlo Masters, started strongly against the 70th-ranked Austrian, who at 20 years and eight months is the youngest player in the top 100.

However, he lost his way in the second set and was unable to re-cover in the third as Thiem pulled off his first ever win over a top 10 player to secure passage to the third round and a meeting with 15th seed Mikhail Youzhny of Russia or un-seeded Spaniard Feliciano Lopez.

Wawrinka told a news confer-ence he had found trouble adjusting to the conditions in the Spanish capital, where the thinner air at altitude helps the balls fly faster than a clay court at sea level. “It’s never easy to (adjust), especially here, it’s flying a little bit,” added the 29-year-old, who lost to Nadal in last year’s Madrid final.

“He was finding his game and

I was hesitating with my game and wasn’t playing my best game. “He’s a good player. We all know that. We all see that, especially since the beginning of the year. “I’m not surprised because I know him. He was going for it and he deserved to win.” Thiem added: “I cannot really believe it.

“Of course I was a little bit ner-vous, but it wasn’t the reason for the first set, his pace was just too high for me. “I played a good game at the beginning of the second set to break him and then I started to get used to more and more his pace and angles and his game. “This year I played very good so far. Played also very consistent. I think that’s it’s more important, to play almost every day against these top guys to increase your own level.”

Thiem was joined in the last 16 by fifth seed David Ferrer, who had to dig deep to see off Spanish compatriot Albert Ramos 7-6(6) 5-7 6-3. Top seed and defending champion Rafa Nadal, the world number one, begins his title defence with a second-round match against unseeded Argentine Juan Monaco on Wednesday before seventh seed Andy Murray of Britain takes on Nadal’s Spanish compatriot Nicolas

LeBron James scored 22 points and Ray Allen added 19 as Miami remained undefeated this post-season. Brooklyn had beaten the Heat narrowly in all four of their previous meeting this season.

Chris Bosh scored 15 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, Dwyane Wade finished with 14 points and Mario Chalmers had 12 for Miami, which recorded at least one regular-season win against every team except Brooklyn, losing four times by a total of 12 points. Deron Williams and Joe Johnson scored 17 points each for the Nets, who got only eight from Paul Pierce and no points from Kevin Garnett in 16 minutes.

Game 2 of the best-of-seven series is Thursday night. A 24-9 run in the third quarter blew things open for the Heat, who hadn’t played in eight days after sweeping Charlotte in the opening round. James finished 10 for 15 from the field and Allen — who had never faced his former Boston “Big 3” compatriots Pierce and Garnett in the playoffs

— was 4 of 7 in 3 pointers.Miami’s lead was 55-52 early in the third quar-

ter after a 3-pointer by Williams, and every indi-cation was that the Heat and Nets — who played three one-point games and a double-overtime affair in the regular season — were heading down to the wire again. San Antonio’s Tony Parker had 33 points and nine assists as the Spurs bullied a younger Portland and won 116-92.

Kawhi Leonard had 16 points and Tim Dun-can added 12 points and 11 rebounds for San Antonio. More importantly for the Spurs, their bench contributed mightily after being virtually non-existent in the series against Dallas. Marco Belinelli had 19 points and the Australian con-nection of Aron Baynes and Patty Mills had 10 points apiece. The Spurs had their most complete game of the postseason, playing with the flair and fluidity that resulted in the league’s best regular season record.

GIANYAR - When having a closer look at white heron, our mind will immediately refer to a quiet and cool village. It is the Petulu village located in Ubud subdistrict, Gianyar, or about 25 km from Denpasar. The village is a breeding place of the white heron. Thou-sands of white herons live and mingle with local people amicably.

The birds are never afraid of the be-havior of local people. They live freely as if they have become a part of the local community. They look for food at the space in front of the house, yard, and fields as well as play on the branches or twigs of tree. Interestingly, people also feel comfortable and do not dare expel, let alone kill them.

Foreign tourists love intimacy. Even, a few of those tourists come specifically to watch and immortalize them through electronic media. Moreover, it is accom-panied with the life story on the white heron at Petulu categorized to be unique and unbelievable.

The visit should be made in No-vember, December, January and April because in these months the herons will be crowded. Unlike during May to August, they are only perching on the trees because they are going out to look for food and come back in the afternoon. Their existence will be different in Sep-tember and October. At that time, those herons are estimated to have a desire, so that they should go out to the beach and marshes.

Ryan Giggs — at the other end of the age spectrum at 40 — came on for his 963rd, and possibly final, appearance for United in the second half and set up fel-low substitute Robin van Persie for the clinching third goal in the 86th.

Giggs, taking charge of his third game as United’s interim manager following the firing of David Moyes last month, has not decided whether to take his distinguished playing career into a 24th year next season. And his future as a coach at United is uncertain while the club searches for Moyes’ replacement, which is likely to be current Netherlands coach Louis van Gaal.

An emotional Old Trafford also bade farewell to defender Nemanja Vidic, who is joining Inter Milan in the summer after

more than eight years at United, on a night that had an end-of-era feel to it.

Wilson, though, offered posi-tive signs for the future as part of a youthful lineup that included another debutant in 20-year-old forward Tom Lawrence. Address-ing supporters in a short speech on the pitch after the final whistle, Giggs said: “You have seen a little glimpse of the future, and this is what this club is about. We never stand still. We always give youth a chance, and we try and play at-tractive football.”

The victory moved United three points behind sixth-place Tottenham in the race for the final Europa League spot avail-able in the league, with one game remaining. United last failed to qualify for Europe in 1990. Vidic began on the bench after accept-

ing a memento from United great Bobby Charlton before kickoff but was a 22nd-minute substitute for Phil Jones, who came off with a shoulder injury sustained in an aerial collision.

Giggs said Jones, who was ex-pected to be in England’s World Cup squad, had been taken to hospital and that it “didn’t look great.” Big things are expected of Wilson, who has played for Eng-land Under-16s and Under-19s and has scored 19 goals for United’s Under-21 team this season.

And he showed his striker’s instincts just in the 31st, reacting quickly to Marouane Fellaini’s nod-down from a free kick to slam a left-foot shot low into the net from the edge of the six-yard box.

SAO PAULO - Thiago Silva is the only current Brazil player that would find a place in the 1970 World Cup winning team, former midfield great Rivelino says, highlighting the Selecao’s shift from an attacking force to one more defensively orientated. Rivelino, one of the stars of that legendary side, said Neymar was the other standout in the team aiming for Brazil’s sixth World Cup title at the tournament starting on home soil on June 12.

The 1970 side had a host of great forwards so only Silva, the classy Paris St Germain defender and Brazil captain, would edge his way into the team ahead of Wilson Piazza, the former Corinthians and Fluminense player said. “If you look at the back, Thiago Silva would get in the 1970 team,” he said in an interview. “Piazza was a great player, but he wasn’t a central defender, he was adapted from midfield. You can’t ignore a player like Thiago Silva. He has real quality.”

Rivelino lamented the lack of strikers and said that for perhaps the first time Brazil go into a World Cup with a better back four than forward line. The country of Pele, Ronaldo and Romario has few attractive options up front, a worry considering each of the World Cup triumphs included a deadly attack-ing duo. “Brazil always had great attackers who could decide a game at any moment,” he told Reuters at an interview at his eponymous soccer school.

“If you go back, in 1958 it was Pele and Vava; in 1962, Pele and Vava; in 1970, Pele and Tostao. Then Bebeto and Romario (in 1994) and then Rivaldo and Ronaldo (in 2002). “And there were other players alongside them. But there were two important players, one or the other was always on hand. Today we have one, Fred, who has a nose for goal, but the ball has to come to him, he doesn’t make goals himself.”

striker Fred in the 23-man squad he will name on Wednesday in Rio de Ja-neiro. Former Manchester City and Everton centre forward Jo, who is now with Atletico Mineiro, is expected to be his back up. Both players have their limitations, with Fred lacking mobility and suffering from a number of injuries in recent seasons, and Jo, who was substituted after 15 minutes of Atletico Mineiro’s loss to Goias at the weekend, not in the top echelon of strikers.

If Fred or Barcelona forward Neymar, who has 30 goals in 47 interna-tional matches, were injured or lacking form Brazil could struggle to hit the back of the net, with Rivelino saying Scolari should pick an extra attacker to compensate. “I wouldn’t take four central defenders, I’d take three and another striker,” he said.

“I’d take (Sao Paulo’s) Luis Fabiano. He doesn’t have to be first choice but he’s there as an option. I think he’s an interesting player and if he has to play he won’t be afraid because he’s been there before.”

MILAN — Teenage forward Do-menico Berardi scored his third hat trick of the season to help Sassuolo win 4-3 at high-flying Fiorentina on Tuesday and boost its hopes of Serie A survival. The 19-year-old Berardi scored all his goals in the first half to help lift his club out of the bottom three.

“It was a positive attitude but we’re not yet safe,” Sassuolo coach Eusebio Di Francesco said. “We have two fun-damental games left and we can’t give up.” “Berardi is a young player who still makes some naive mistakes of a 19-year-old. He has a strong character and the right personality to do what he does in big games.”

The teenager also netted three times against Sampdoria and scored four against AC Milan in what proved to be Massimiliano Allegri’s final match in charge. Italy forward Giuseppe Rossi made his first league appearance since January 5 and marked his return from injury with a goal which almost inspired Fiorentina to an astonishing comeback.

The New Jersey-born forward will have boosted his chances of making Italy’s World Cup squad. “Apart from the final result, it was a good match on our part,” Fiorentina coach Vincenzo Montella said. “We should be proud of our reaction on the second half.

“Everyone hopes Rossi will be at the World Cup, especially him and he is improving physically. But obvi-ously the choice doesn’t depend on me.” Fiorentina remained fourth while Sassuolo moved two points and two places above the drop zone. Napoli comfortably beat 10-man Cagliari 3-0 in the late match.

Fiorentina goalkeeper Antonio

Rosati was making his Serie A debut and he pulled off a couple of decent saves before Sassuolo opened the scoring with a 23rd-minute penalty following a handball by Borja Valero. Berardi doubled his tally nine minutes later, collecting Nicola Sansone’s threaded pass before firing in at the near post. Rosati got a hand to the ball but couldn’t prevent it from squirming through.

The on-loan Juventus forward completed his hat trick three minutes

from halftime with his 16th goal in his debut Serie A season.

Substitute Joaquin was introduced early in the second half for Fiorentina and he had an immediate impact, winning the penalty which Gonzalo Rodriguez converted. Sansone re-stored Sassuolo’s three-goal advantage before Rossi came on in the 65th minute and scored seven minutes later after a swift one-two with Valero. Coincidentally, Rossi’s last goal came against Sassuolo.

Reuters SANTIAGO - Juventus midfielder Arturo Vidal will have knee

cartilage surgery in Barcelona on Wednesday, casting doubt over his hopes of playing for Chile at the World Cup finals.

Vidal’s recovery time hinges on how the operation goes, though the situation does not look good, according to a source on the medical team treating him in Barcelona.

A key member of Chile coach Jorge Sampaoli’s team, Vidal has suffered a tear to the external meniscus of his right knee. He aggra-vated the problem playing for Juventus, crowned Serie A champions at the weekend, in the second leg of their Europa League semi-final against Benfica last Thursday.

Chile were pinning their hopes on the versatile and energetic 26-year-old midfielder in a tough group at the tournament in Brazil starting on June 12 and his absence would be a major blow to the Andean team. The Chileans face world champions Spain, the Neth-erlands and Australia in Group B.

Manchester United midfielder, Antonio Valencia, was included in the squad as expected.

MANCHESTER, England — Manchester United unearthed a potential star of the fu-ture and perhaps had one last glimpse of a great of its recent past in a 3-1 win over Hull on Tuesday that kept alive the team’s chances of European football next season. Highly rated striker James Wilson, 18, marked his senior debut for United with predatory strikes in either half, setting the deposed champions on their way to a victory in their final home game of a forgettable Premier League campaign.

laini’s shot was parried out by goalkeeper Eldin Jakupovic in the 61st, Wilson was on course to emulate Wayne Rooney’s feat from 2004 of scoring a hat trick on his debut. He was substituted three minutes later, however, but the Old Trafford crowd will surely be seeing more of him. Giggs entered to rousing applause in

the 70th and showed flashes of the brilliance that has illuminated Old Trafford since 1991.

With the home fans chanting “Keeper, let it in,” Giggs had a long-range free kick tipped over by Jakupovic in injury time — perhaps bringing to an end his run of scor-ing in every Premier League season since its inception in 1992.

SEOUL, South Korea — Three weeks after South Korea’s ferry tragedy, the government on Wednesday said it miscounted the number of survivors, a stunning error and the latest of many missteps that have eroded the nation’s confidence in its leaders.

(kmb16)

On that account, the Sanur strategic area must be utilized by local communities, not foreign investors,” said Chairman of the GIPI Bali, Ngurah Wijaya, in Denpasar.

Meanwhile, Director Gen-eral of Destination Development, Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy, Firmansyah Rahim, on the occasion also confirmed that among the 80 National Tourism Strategic Areas set in Indonesia, 11 of which were in Bali.

(kmb27)

(kmb34)

PREMIER’S TIME IN OFFICE

“The cabinet has agreed to appoint Niwattumrong Boonsongpaisan to act as caretaker prime minister,” Phongthep Thepkanjana, a deputy prime minister said.

The court, which has played a key role in deposing Shinawatra-linked govern-ments in recent turbulent chapters of Thai politics, ruled unanimously that she acted illegally by transferring a top security of-ficial in 2011.

“Therefore her prime minister status has ended... Yingluck can no longer stay in her position acting as caretaker prime minis-ter,” presiding judge Charoon Intachan said in a televised ruling.

Several cabinet ministers who endorsed the decision to transfer Thawil will also be stripped of their status. The court also de-clined to appoint a new prime minister.

It was not immediately clear whether the ruling would create a political vacuum or if one of Yingluck’s ministers nominated after Thawil’s transfer would be able to step into her shoes, pending a future elec-tion.

The case plunges Thailand deeper into a prolonged political crisis with anti-government protesters still on Bangkok’s streets and Yingluck’s “Red shirt” support-ers also threatening to rally to defend her, raising fears of clashes.

Jubilant anti-government demonstra-tors blew whistles outside the court to mark her removal -- a key demand of their movement, which is seeking to curb the influence of Yingluck’s billionaire brother, Thaksin.

“I am happy even though the the whole cabinet has not been removed. People who do not respect the law should be thrown out,” Linjong Thummathorn told AFP.

The kingdom has been bedevilled by a bitter political schism since 2006 when an army coup deposed former telecoms magnate Thaksin.

He is reviled by the Bangkok elite, mid-dle class and royalist southerners who say he has sponsored nepotism, widespread corruption and perceive him as a threat to the monarchy.

But he is loved by the populous, poor north and northeast and among the urban working class for recognising their bur-geoning political and economic aspira-tions.
