"Mary embraces us and unites us. Sometimes, and not on-

ly sometimes, the path becomes difficult. And in this mo-

ment of pandemic and numerous threats to health, of so

much fear, of so many needs, it is even more difficult. We

need the Mother to embrace us. This is how Our Lady

views us. We are all different, but She is a Mother and She

embraces us all.” —Pope Francis

In the Company of Pope Francis

FROM YOUR PASTOR

Mary is a MOTHER to all...especially in TIMES OF UNCERTAINTY...in the PANDEMIC...

How do we THANK her?

We can we THANK her through the GIFT OF THE HOLY ROSARY.

In the HOLY ROSARY , and its Beautiful Mysteries, we encounter the GREAT VIRTUES of Our Blessed Moth-er. Her OBEDIENCE to the Will of Our Heavenly Father at the Annunciation. Her HUMILITY in the Presence of the Lord in the Visitation. Her parental DUTIFULNESS when she is searching for the Young Jesus lost in the Temple. Her complete TRUST in Her Son at the Marriage Feast at Cana.

October is the Month of the HOLY ROSARY. By PRAYING THE HOLY ROSARY EVERYDAY in the month of OCTOBER, we can add SPECIAL INTENTIONS for those affected by the Pandemic Impacts, the Political Violence, and the Racial Injustice.

The Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary is celebrated on October 7th to honor the Blessed Virgin Mary in gratitude for the protection that she gives the Church in answer to the praying of the ROSARY by the Faithful. It was intro-duced by Pope Saint Pius V in 1571 to commemorate the Miraculous Victory of the Christian forces in the Battle of Lepanto. The Pope attributed more to the 'arms' of the ROSARY than to the power of the cannons and the val-or of the soldiers.

Our Blessed Mother had given the ROSARY as a Form of Prayer to Saint Dominic in 1208 as an aid in the con-flicts with the Albigensians. In 1569 Pope Saint Pius V officially approved the ROSARY in its present form. The ROSARY became an integral part of Prayer and Promulgation by the Dominicans.

Pope Leo XIII promoted the popular devotion to the Blessed Mother of praying the ROSARY beginning in 1883. Pope Pius XII referred to the ROSARY as a 'compendium of the entire Gospel' -- centered on the great events of the Incarnation and Redemption. Pope Saint John Paul II called the ROSARY his favorite prayer in which we 'meditate with Mary upon the mysteries which she as a mother meditated on in her heart.'

As you pray the HOLY ROSARY during UNCERTAIN PANDEMIC TIMES, remember the Words of Our Blessed Mother to Saint Juan Diego in 1531:

Listen. Put it into your heart, my smallest child, that the thing that frightened you, the thing that afflicted you is nothing: Do not let it disturb you… am I not here, I who am your Mother? Are you not under my shadow and pro-tection? Am I not the source of your joy? Are you not in the hollow of my mantle, in the crossing of my arms? Do you need something more?

I don't think so…

+May God Bless You and Keep You+

Twenty-Seventh Sunday of Ordinary Time

There is a compelling documentary on Netflix right now. It’s called The Social Dilemma, I assume to stand in contrast to the 2010 movie The Social Network, which tells the story of Mark Zuckerberg and the founding of Facebook.

This docu-drama features some of the main architects of the most addicting features of Facebook, Google, Twitter and others. These creators admit their horror at what their creations have wrought: sky-high rates of depression and suicide, disinterest in everything one loved before, lethargy and sadness. These are all the markers of addiction, and it has to do with the dopamine delivery to the brain (and, so tragically often, the young brain) that sets up a higher and higher need to click, click, click.

I think of what is probably a global pandemic of internet addiction as I read St. Paul’s brilliant advice to the infant church at Philippi. If every person googling through their favorite internet sites would use Paul’s checklist before clicking deeper in, or, God forbid, sharing the link, the increasing anxiety of our society could be healed.

So, here’s the checklist. Is it true? There are ways to check before you head out to free the trafficked children held in the basement of the pizza parlor. Answer: untrue. Is it honorable? Any call to arms you read on the internet is certainly dishonorable. Is it just? Some-times social media educates us on justice issues, especially if they come from the Vatican or Catholic Charities. Is it pure? Lovely? Gracious? Ah, just thinking on those things raises endorphins and brings us to that peace which passes the understanding of those who troll the ‘net, hoping to devour our souls.

What rules do you have in your house about screen time?

SPIRITUAL FORMATION Saint Philip Neri, Pray for Us

Saint of the Week

Saint Bruno

This saint has the honor of having founded a religious order which, as the saying goes, has never had to be reformed because it was never deformed. No doubt both the founder and the mem-bers would reject such high praise, but it is an indication of the saint’s intense love of a peni-tential life in solitude.

Bruno was born in Co-logne, Germany, be-came a famous teacher at Rheims, and was appointed chancellor of the archdiocese at the age of 45. He sup-ported Pope Gregory VII in his fight against the decadence of the clergy, and took part in the removal of his own scandalous archbishop, Manasses. Bruno suffered the plundering of his house for his pains.

He had a dream of living in solitude and prayer, and persuaded a few friends to join him in a hermitage. After a while he felt the place unsuitable and through a friend, was given some land which was to become famous for his foundation “in the Chartreuse”—from which comes the word Carthusians. The climate, desert, mountainous terrain, and inaccessibility guar-anteed silence, poverty, and small numbers.

Bruno and his friends built an oratory with small individual cells at a distance from each other. They met for Matins and Vespers each day and spent the rest of the time in solitude, eating together only on great feasts. Their chief work was cop-ying manuscripts.

Hearing of Bruno’s holiness, the pope called for his assistance in Rome. When the pope had to flee Rome, Bruno pulled up stakes again, and after refusing a bishopric, spent his last years in the wilderness of Calabria.

Bruno was never formally canonized, because the Carthusians were averse to all occasions of publicity. However, Pope Clement X extended his feast to the whole Church in 1674.

Monday through Friday, our volunteers give out

20-30 bags of food each day at our food pantry.

Each bag of food includes a tuna lunch, chicken

noodle soup, chili, peanut butter, peaches, a bot-

tle of water, a can of V8, a sleeve of saltines and

a granola bar. Each bag costs us about $8.00.

These bags are accessible for anyone in need. We

serve our neighbors experiencing homelessness

and neighbors experiencing food insecurity.

For $40 a week, you could help us feed a brother

or sister in need.

Thank you for your generosity.

RCIA classes have begun! Join us on Wednesday evenings from 6:30-8:30pm at the Knights of Columbus Hall. Email [email protected] for more info!
