Sacrament of the Sick On February 11, we celebrate World Day of the Sick in the United States. “The Church’s service to the sick and those who care for them must continue with renewed vigour, in fidelity to the Lord’s command (cf. Lk 9:2-6; Mt 10:1-8; Mk 6:7-13) and following the eloquent example of her Founder and Master.” (from Pope Francis’ letter for the World Day of the Sick, 2018) To celebrate World Day of the Sick, Holy Rosary Parish will offer the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick during the weekend masses on February 10 and 11.

Confirmation News The Holy Rosary 2018 Confirmation Class will meet on Sunday, February 18, at 4 p.m. in Marist Hall. The Post family will provide the meal. Remember, students and parents, to pray your Confirmation prayer daily!

Marist Scholarship Fundraiser The Scholarship Committee is excited to announce that they are selling T-Shirts as a fund-raiser for our Marist Scholarship. The money will go towards this year’s senior scholarship presented in May. We will be selling short sleeve shirts for $15.00 and long sleeve shirts for $17.00 in all sizes, youth small through adult 3X. We will be taking pre-paid orders during the month of February. Let’s show our Holy Rosary pride and sponsor this worthy cause.

Our Sympathies Our sympathies are extended to the family of Edna Anadon, our homebound parishioner, who died last week. Edna was the mother of Edna (and husband Paco) Figuroa of Buckhannon. May her soul, and all the souls of the faithful departed, rest in peace.

Holy Rosary Women's Group The Holy Rosary Women are excited to present a Lenten evening entitled "The Way of Our Sorrowful Mother" (Via Matris), published in the Magnificat. The gathering will be on Tuesday, February 27th at 6:30 p.m. in Marist Hall. A complimentary Magnificat, March issue, special Holy Week issue, and a Seven Sorrows of Mary Prayer Card will be given to all those who attend. All are welcome.

Lenten Outreach Project Our church's Lenten outreach project will soon begin. This year we will be reaching out to the Families in Crisis Shelter (Elkins) and to senior residents at Holbrook Nursing Home (Buckhannon). This year's Lenten project will be asking parish members to take an Easter egg from an Easter basket or tree, purchase the gift listed inside the egg, and return the gift either wrapped or unwrapped. Our Christian Concerns Ministry will take it from there. Meanwhile, thank you for your very generous response to our Advent project. YOU really were the "angels" on the Christmas angel tree!

Retreat With The Pope This Lenten season we will be going on retreat with the Pope. That's right: Pope Francis. The retreat will consist of a DVD series entitled "A Lenten Retreat with Pope Francis" and will take place every Friday of Lent (except First Friday, March 2nd and Good Friday). Themes that will be covered include God's mercy, forgiveness, and compassion as seen from the perspective of our Pope. A meager meal (soup and sandwiches) will be included. The weekly retreat will take place on Friday's immediately after Stations of the Cross. Join us for this blessed "time out" offered by our Adult Faith Ministry.

Men’s Group The men's group will be meeting every Wednesday at 6:30 a.m. in Marist Hall. If you are interested in another meeting time, please contact Sal Carmona at 304-642-0866. The theme this spring is spiritual development and male leadership. All men of the parish are invited to attend.

Pastoral Council Report Building Update

As many of you are aware, our Parish School of Religion buildings are in need of substantial repair. Planning for the future and sustainability of our parish, the Pastoral Council has been looking into how to accommodate students and members of our parish in a safe, learning environment. A Building Committee has been formed and they have been looking into several different affordable options for this endeavor. We would like input from our parishioners with any ideas or concerns you may have. We would definitely need the prayers and support of our entire parish to make this endeavor a success. Parish Council members are available to answer any questions or concerns you may have.

WHY DO WE DO THAT? - CATHOLIC LIFE EXPLAINED Question: Carnivale and Mardi Gras celebrations are linked to Ash Wednesday, Lent, fast and abstinence. Can you tell us more about the connections between these events?

Answer: Ash Wednesday is the beginning of the forty days known as Lent. Every year, Christians highlight this penitential season as a time of self-examination, reformation of one's life, and continued development of a deeper spiritual life. The recommended practices of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving become the focus of Lenten activity and ritual. Each of these spiritual practices is aimed at personal discipline as well as continued concern for the other, especially the poor or alienated. Forty days is a symbolic biblical period of time, during which personal transformation occurs and out of which people surface as more spiritual, ready to carry out God's mission. Relying on God's providence and care, no matter how difficult life becomes, is crucial to Lenten spirituality. Fasting was initially stricter, permitting only one simple meal a day without meat, fish, or other delicacies. Such things were not even

allowed in the house. In order to prepare for this in an age of no refrigeration, people gathered to consume whatever was not allowed during Lent. This led to parties or celebrations originally referred to as Carnivale, literally meaning "goodbye to meat," or Mardi Gras, literally meaning "Fat Tuesday." The eating and celebrating ended on the Tuesday just

before Ash Wednesday. Today we focus more on moderation in all things, as well as a strong concern the poor. What are you doing for the poor this Lent?
