For about five decades in the 19th century and three in the 20th, steam engines and agricultural machinery weremade on this site. Later, fresh fruit and vegatables were canned there. The past scene was captured in 1985, fiveyears after industrial activity ceased.

Thetford Leg Club Thetford Leg Club is a volunteer and District NursingTeam group, established in 2003, which was set up tohelp the local community with the care and maintenanceof healthy legs. And, with nearly 700 people having beentreated so far, with many more having been given expertadvice, the clinic is proving to be very popular. We strive to educate as well as care for people with all

While the District Nurses deal with all medical matters, the volunteers (unpaid) are responsible for theadministration of the project, and fundraising. We are anon-NHS funded group, and as such we depend uponthe generosity of the local population, and businesscommunity.

February 2010The Month of Love
February, also known as “the month of love”, withvalentine’s Day right bang in the middle can be a verybusy time for everyone. We tend to be busy in thesalon with clients booking pamper days ormaintenance treatments for pre winter holidays. Mostof us feel the need to get back into shape and havesome sort of routine after long winter months of overindulgences and many of us taking less exercise.February is the perfect time to do it. That being saidit’s not just the ladies that need a boost ( we alreadyknow it helps us) but our men folk need someconditioning and re-educating as to the benefits oftherapy treatments.
Male pedicures are very good for introductions intothe skincare centres followed by nail treatments.Skincare facial treatments can help with ingrown hair, shaving rashes and irritations which can all beimproved. Not to mention the amazing benefits ofmassage to relieve stress and tension of tired achingmuscles. So girls get your man to try some therapies, there are many salons that cater for both men andwomen, some salons, like ours, even have maletherapists!
Instead of getting the same type of gift this valentinefor him or her make it more personal and get a giftthat is really memorable and will have lasting benefits.Who knows, your man may feel so relaxed he’ll treatyou to dinner or who knows what else he may agreeto! Lisa Stallings,

Thetford’s Unique BellsWith eight magnificent bells housed in the tower at StPeter’s Church, we consider the importance of the bellsto the town and give eight good reasons for Thetford tobe proud of this unique part of its heritage. It has been said that if a medieval peasant were to returnto life in the 21st century, the few sounds he wouldrecognise would be the song of the nightingale and thesound of church bells. Nowhere is this more true thanin this ancient market town of Thetford, with its longecclesiastical history, in rural Norfolk. Medieval Thetfordwas a significant and industrious town with severalchurches – today only St Peter’s continues to let themajestic sound of bells ring out across the town. Withthe future of St Peter’s currently under debate, it is timelythat we consider what role the bells have played in thehistory of Thetford, and how they may become part ofthe town’s future.
A Cathedral CityBy the early 10th century, what is now the Diocese ofNorwich was at Elmham – North in Norfolk and South inSuffolk – still a matter of great debate even today! In1070 the Bishop Herfast moved the diocese to Thetfordwhere the Church of St Mary the Great (originally on thesite of the Grammar School) was built as its cathedral.Looking at modern day Thetford it is hard to imagine theprestige and importance of the town as a Cathedral Citybut that is unquestionably what is was, and makesThetford a significant place in the history of the churchand in Norfolk. By 1094 the diocese had moved again, this time to Norwich. There is no cathedral city in Britain, past or present, which does not have a ring of bells.
The History of ThetfordAnywhere which was important to the church was alsoan important place for other trades which wereassociated with it. A good example of this is bellfoundingwhich in earlier times would have been carried out nearchurches and often near rivers which supplied thenecessary cooling water and transportation. ThomasDraper had a bell foundry here between 1577 and 1644which may well have been a branch of the famous BurySt Edmunds Foundry. Draper was Mayor of Thetford in1592 and his father John had connections with the Buryfoundry. The river was also the conduit for other tradesin Thetford and so it also developed an importanceeconomically as well as ecclesiastically.
A Flourishing ArtBy 1635, the art of campanology as we know it todaybegan to flourish, originating we believe in Cambridgewhere at St Benedict’s (or St Bene’t) the Cambridgemathematician Fabian Stedman was a ringer. Also at thistime, bells began to be rung using a wheel and ropewhich allowed much more control for the ringer whenthe bell was struck and this led to the development ofmusical changes rung to a metronomic rhythm. Themore bells in the peal, the more musical the differentchanges could be.Today in England alone there are over 40,000 ringersand nearly 6,000 rings of 4 or more bells. Latterly ringinghas spread to North America, Australasia, South Africa, and very recently, Holland. Not only is it a fascinatinghobby but it offers a service to the church andcommunity, and ringers are proud to be continuing a veryspecial English tradition.
Bells are OrdainedAs far back as the 7th century bells were ordained to berung as part of the liturgy of the Church, calling peopleto worship. Their unique sound has formed the backdropto life in Thetford for centuries, reminding us of the richhistory of the town through the ages.

A Fine, Unique Ring of 8The Church of St Peter’s boasts a fine ring of 8 bells castby Thomas Osborn of Downham Market in 1790, elevenyears after Osborn had opened his foundry there. He hadformerly been a partner in Arnold and Eyre’s celebratedfoundry at St Neots. Osborn’s foundry went on to castmany notable bells. Of these, the most impressive arethe complete ring of 10 at St Edmundsbury Cathedraland the ring of 8 here at St Peter’s – both of which arecomplete and still being rung today.
Bells Keep the Past AliveAs the only remaining ring of bells in the town, they needto continue to sound as a reminder to all of the soundsthat would have been in heard in medieval times, evenas the people of 21st century Thetford go about theirdaily lives.
Looking to the FutureBells speak to us of the past but they also have arelevance and a meaning for today and for the future. The tradition of English style change ringing is an ancientart unique in its origins to England, and like so many ofour traditions, is in danger of dying out if younger ringerscannot be encouraged to cherish and maintain it. Theredundant church of St Peter’s and its magnificent bellscould provide an ideal environment for a Teaching Centreto pass on the skills of bell ringers and help keep thisheritage alive. The nave and chancel could provide awonderful setting for exhibition space and it would bevery fitting to have a focal point in the town for itsmarvellous heritage to be passed on to its inhabitantsand visitors. The Town Council is in the process ofacquiring St Peter’s for the town. Its use has not yet beendecided but the bells will stay where they are and aPublic Meeting will take place to discuss possible usesfor the church. Anybody interested in finding out moreabout ringing should contact the Tower Captain, DavidRogers at [email protected] and he will bedelighted to tell you how to become part of this greattradition.
A Precious HeritageBy the end of the eighteenth century there were bellshung in all three of Thetford’s medieval churches – 5 atSt Cuthbert’s, 6 at St Mary the Less and a complete 8 atSt Peter’s – reflecting the prosperity of the town and itshistorical importance. Sadly, of these, only the 8 at StPeter’s remain, there are still 3 bells at St Cuthbert’swhich are hung dead, it is thought that the other 2 bellswere sold to help pay for the rebuilding of the tower. It isunlikely that bells will ever be hung again for ringing atthe other two churches and so it is essential that the bellsof St Peter’s continue the long tradition of ringing inThetford. To replace all 8 bells at current prices wouldcost over £200,000, so they are indeed a very preciousheritage and asset to the town.

By now you should all have the date of Saturday 19thJune in your diaries as being D A Day – if not make sureyou put that right immediately as you will not want tomiss this! This is the day when we shall be unveiling thefull size bronze statue of Captain Mainwaring and yes itreally is happening! Sean Hedges-Quinn, our sculptor, isfinalising details of the maquette and we are allowing youa very sneak preview of what it will be like.
stage of the sculpture, which is making the armature forthe full sized work and he is very pleased with how it iscoming along.
We do still need assistance with the Captain’s bench.Donations are of course always welcome, however, wealso appreciate that times are tough and we do have abudget for this project. If your company would like to getinvolved by either making the bench or supplying thewood for it please get in touch as soon as possible.Where is it going to be? This is a common question andat present we are unable to confirm the exact position. Most people will know that our ideal place is down by thetown bridge and close to the sites of the Bell and Anchorhotels, however, this site is earmarked for redevelopmentand naturally our councils have much to consider. AboutThetford will be first to hear the news so watch thisspace.
There is much planned for the unveiling day, includingthe RAF Honington Band and 1940’s dancers, however, the whole week will be full of 1940’s celebration and weknow that many people will take the opportunity to
become involved. There will be several of ourpopular Dad’s Army tours throughout the weekleading up to the weekend and the stage show of
course will also be running -tickets by the wayare already selling well. The Dad’s ArmyAppreciation Society (DAAS) are busy planningtheir part in the event and we can expectmany of the surviving cast members, writers, production crew – in fact a reunion of anyonethat has ever had anything to do with the Dad’sArmy series to descend on the town to see the
statue. Our patron Bill Pertwee is veryexcited about it all and told usrecently that the remaining castkeep thinking ‘what would ArthurLowe make of it all’. It is causingquite a stir! The final day, Sunday20th June, sees the Dad’s Army
Team off to Bressingham. They have moved their annualCroft & Perry day from May to June to coincide with ourcelebrations. Many of the cast will be present, signing

As if this wasn’t enough for 2010 there are lots of otherevents planned for the year. We are currently 2/3rds ofthe way through our second round of 1940’s danceclasses. We have now secured additional funding, whichwill mean that we shall begin a new dance class inMarch. If there is sufficient interest we will be runningboth a beginner’s class and an intermediate BoogieWoogie class for those that have already completed thebeginner’s class and want to learn more. Exact start datewill be confirmed shortly but please get in touch NOW toregister your interest.

We are building an amazing team of people, who are ableto volunteer for all manner of duties. Some like to beinvolved in the dancing or the special evenings that weorganise. Some prefer to work in the museum, some liketo come out to the outside events we are invited to, someprefer to work behind the scenes. These events don’thappen by magic they are the product of lots of greatpeople working together and there really is somethingfor everyone – no matter how little the time is that youcan offer we will happily take it and you definitely won’tregret it – so what are you waiting for?
We have not one but three dances already planned for2010. The first is a brand new 50s/60s night on Saturday27th March. Popular band ‘Lou and the Diamonds’ willbe performing alongside our regular DJ Texas Tommy. The Friends are well known for their excellent 40’s nightsand wanted to build on their experience and success byoffering something a little different. Friends ofAncient House
MuseumIn1924, Prince Frederick Duleep Singh gave the AncientHouse Museum to the people of Thetford. The museumhas evolved over the decades to the beautiful, atmospheric and ‘state of the art’ attraction that it istoday. The building and collection are managed by a teamfrom Norfolk Museum and Archaeology Service, headedby Curator Oliver Bone. Regular readers of About Thetfordwill be familiar with many of the projects that the teamhave worked on and town events that they have takenpart in. Throughout all of these projects the museum isvery fortunate to have the support of its Friendsorganisation. The group brings together like-mindedpeople who are passionate about Thetford’s past andfuture. Thousands of people visit the Ancient House eachyear to admire its rich and diverse collections, some ofwhich have been generously purchased by the Friendsfor the museum. The Friends have also supported theeducational work at the museum, and many longstanding Friends have been volunteers in the past andenjoy a close relationship with the museum

Barnham CrossCommon
The ongoing work to increase theamount of chalk grassland and grassheath will take place during Februarythis year on Barnham Cross Common. This is the second in a three yearprogramme to remove small areas ofscrub and tree species that haveencroached over recent years.
Traditionally the area would have beengrazed by sheep and /or cattle that ledto the common being almostcompletely flower rich grassland.Ideally grazing should be reintroducedhowever the effects of grazing can bepartially replaced by mowing andremoving the grass to prevent itsnutrients returning to the soil.Unfortunately this way there is nolamb or beef to enjoy as an endproduct but it is the lack of availablenutrients that make the grass of thecommon so rich in plant and insectnumbers.
The ability of grazing animals to nibbleoff established trees and small scrubspecies cannot be replaced bymowing and over recent years largeareas of scrub and trees have becomeestablished. Much of this work will beto cut back the edges of establishedscrub and tree species to allow thegrass to re-colonise. Areas of existinggrassland will be reconnected so thatplants, animals and insects can moveand re-establish more freely.
Funding for this work is providedthrough the Countryside StewardshipScheme administered by NaturalEngland.
If you would like to find out moreabout the common or get involved asa volunteer for the site then contactKeith Harvey on Thetford 755702.

Thetford Fire Station Staff at Thetford Fire Station are taking part in asponsored Weight Loss in aid of two very worthycharities: The Firefighters Charity and ChapelRoad School, Attleborough.
Every year thousands of fire fighters are injured whilstprotecting the public. Every 30 seconds in the UK, firefighters are called to an incident, putting their lives onthe line, and often sustaining physical injuries whilstcarrying out their duties. The Fire Fighters Charity assistsover 17,000 people every year, by providing pioneeringtreatment and support services.
It costs over £9 million every year to keep the FirefightersCharity running, and with no government funding, theyare completely reliant upon donations from the generalpublic and fire community.
Chapel Road School is an outstanding school. It catersfor children with special needs from and close to theBreckland area. All the pupils attending have a specialeducational need and travel long distances each day toattend. Most have severe and profound learningdifficulties or autistic disorders. The school offers aninclusion and outreach program for both primary and

Tanner House AdultEducation Centre to CloseDisappointment is being felt across the town as TannerHouse prepares to close at Easter. The Adult Centre thatraises self esteem and concentrates on literacy andnumeracy education has informed students of theclosure. Strong feelings of sadness and confusion mixedwith some anger prevail with the question of why hangingin the air.
Some students have mobility problems, some studentshave transport problems, while others have limited timeas their exams are looming, or they will be unable tofinish their course. All are very worried at the prospect ofthe closure and what the future will hold, if anything.
Sheena Nelson, who works as a classroom assistant wasdismayed to hear the news, which came very suddenlyand completely out of the blue. Sheena said’ those whohave started their NVQ2 will be unable to finish.’ WithoutTanner House Sheena says she would not be in herpresent position as the NVQ2 and the city and guilds shehas taken so far all relate to her work, adding that shewill be unable to continue her education to a higher level.
Jo Howell, speaking about the upset the closure iscausing, said that they speak on behalf of all thoseaffected especially disabled members of the literacygroup. The centre is used by many different people andis especially good for those with low self esteem who feelsettled and confident and unable to travel easily. At themoment the centre is within walking distance for many, the bus station is just around the corner, and for thosewho drive in there is easy parking. Some people, whomissed out at school for whatever the reason, need anout of school environment to succeed in a small friendlysituation.
Nicky Cox is bitterly disappointed to hear the news. Shesaid’ this is a real shame. I have done all my extra coursesthere. The staff are really good, friendly and helpful’.
The Thetford Lionesses were pleased to have collected£311.00 from the bottle and xmas stall and sale of knittedsnowmen. Thank you to everyone who supported thisevent. All monies raised will be donated to Ovarian cancerand other Lioness charities".

Adult Education takesLearning into the
Community in ThetfordAdult education is set for more of a community feel inThetford, as the Norfolk County Council service gets setto move classes out into the town's communities.
With the current premises on Tanner Street somewhatdated, and with many people preferring to learn closerto home, the council has decided to relocate courses intoa range of locations in the town. Staff will work out ofThetford Library and will offer information throughout allof the local communities - organising drop-in sessionsand courses at a range of different community venues.
The move will allow the Adult Education service to offera better range of post-16 learning opportunities forresidents in the Thetford area, reaching out to somepeople in the community who have not engaged with theservice before.
Derrick Murphy, Norfolk County Council's Cabinetmember for Cultural Services and Adult Education, said:"Thetford is a growing community and we want our AdultEducation service to be as best placed as possible toserve the town, both now, and in the coming years.
"Tanner House served us well, but rather than havingeverything offered from one location, we will be muchmore responsive to community needs by reaching out tonew and different people at a number of differentlocations around the town."
Whilst well located, Tanner House has become dated, with the building requiring large-scale changes to bringit up to current disability access requirements andclassroom space limited. All learners have been informedthat classes will end from Tanner House at the end ofMarch.
With additional homes and jobs on the horizon for thetown in the coming years, the service hopes to maintainand grow its position as a key provider of post-16learning in Thetford.
Local County Councillor for Thetford, Marion Chapman-Allen, said:"By bringing courses more into the heart of different localcommunities in Thetford, rather than having one basethat most courses operate from, I believe that the Adult
Education service will reach a larger cross-section ofThetford residents.
A wide range of courses will be locally on offer to a wideraudience, and this can only be a good thing for the town, and its employers."
Discussions about a Norfolk County Council AdultEducation presence in the earmarked post 16 learningcentre in the town are also ongoing.
Members of the public interested in finding out moreabout the courses offered by Norfolk County Council AdultEducation can visit www.norfolk.gov.uk/adulteducationor call 0344 800 8002.

There is always something to look forward to. Therhododendron is the first to come in to flower in latewinter giving a little bit of colour when everything is abit drab.
Something for the youngsters to help with is puttingfood out for the birds and making sure there is freshwater every day.
Well that is all from me this month I am lookingforward to giving you all some more hintsand tips for your gardens andallotments next month Regards Yvonne.
Hi budding gardeners it's me again Yvonne with morehints and tips for your gardens and allotments.
As you know we have had a lot of snow in January, but not to worry as this will be very good for theground as it will be nice and warm. It will hopefullydo the ground a lot of good.
If like me you did not have time to dig your gardenbefore the very cold weather set in then February is avery good time to get stuck in.This is also the time to dig in some manure for yourpotatoes and your barrasicas, they do like a bit ofmanure in the ground.
Late winter is the time you can plant your parsnips, spinach and broad beans, as parsnips take a long timeto germinate a good tip is to soak them in some waterover night to help them. Weather permitting, anyremaining parsnips that are left in the ground fromlast year may be dug up and buried upside down in atrench or stored in sand so that you can carry on usingthrough the springtime. This also a good time to plantJerusalem artichokes, shallots and garlic providingthe ground is workable.
There are lots of things we could be doing in ourgardens as well; prune rose bushes and feed themwith either horse or pig manure, prune summerflowering shrubs, plant lily bulbs in beds and borders, sweet peas need to potted up and put in the greenhouse. This is a good time to do any repairs thatmight need doing on the allotment or garden and toclean the green house out, getting ready for the springwhich is only round the corner.

Gardening with Old GranddadHello, this is a new gardening write up for children, or asI like to call them, young gardeners. It will be calledGardening with old Granddad and I am going to explainto you how you can grow vegetables, with or without aplot of land. If you are lucky enough to have a plot of land, it’s time toget it dug over ready for planting next month. For thoseof you without a garden, we are going to grow ourvegetables in containers, anything that will hold enoughsoil and compost to do the job. I think the best thing touse is a plastic bucket like the ones builders use, wideat the top and deep enough to grow vegetables. Thesecost between 99p and £1.50p, this is a lot of money butyou can use them over and over again, also you will needholes drilled in the bottom for drainage, ask a grown upto do this.So those of you with a plot of land get digging, and theyoung gardeners without land make sure you have 3 x3” pots, big containers ie, buckets, a bag of compostand these seeds, lettuce, radish, spring onions andbeetroot. Next month we can get started. Contact by email: [email protected] This is as long as your parents approve.

Residents Behaving BadlyAn idea of Ken Richards, a charismatic client ofLaburnum Grove Housing- with -Care Scheme, to holda raffle to raise funds for Help for Heroes amazinglyturned Friday 15th January into one of the mostdramatic fund raising days imaginable!
42Please mention the About Thetford Community Magazine when responding to advertisements
As staff and clients grasped ideas the day promised to bevery entertaining, and grew at an astonishing rate in anincredibly short time.
The opening warmup of War Timesongs was swiftlyfollowed by staffm e m b e r ssponsored events,Doug Bohn having afull head shave wasfirst and in no timeat all his full head ofhair disappeared toa chorus of suitsyou sir!
I think you willagree it does.
Zorina and Pam were transformed with a delicate hairdyeing session, cerise pink and bright green/yellowrespectively.
At record pace brave David Friend , better known to theThetford and District Motorcycle club as Grandad, smiledall the way through his leg waxing and encouraged bythe response, and the bucket going round for donations, had not just one leg but both legs shaved, much to thedelight of spectators.
Next on the table was Marjorie Gotts another greatparticipant, turning over for backs of legs too. Shirley dressed as a punk made frequent appearancesas she watched and encouraged others. The itinerary flowed at a speed which can only becompared to the speed of some client’s finger on thetrigger of the next event which was masterminded byDarren Marsh, from Laser Combat. Darren handed outlaser guns to clients and war broke out, the battle ragedbetween opposite sides of the room and as they say apicture tells a thousand stories so I will leave you todecide whether this was enjoyed!
Darren also supplied the army uniforms for staff and aremote control tank battle game which turned out to befar more skilful than it looks.
Well we are all familiar with Men Behaving Badly butresidents behaving badly is unexpected to say the veryleast!

At 4.30 pm the Mayor of Thetford, Councillor PamSpencer arrived and was promptly kidnapped by clientJosie Brace, with the help of accomplices Granddad andEdwin Lorilla and imprisoned for one and half hours.
Doris and Mary, clients at Laburnum, thoroughly enjoyeddressing up and entertaining the troops, and of coursethe raffle was drawn.
Although a ransom was demanded for Pam’s release thiswas not actually secured until PC 1643 James Listerarrived. In a performance perhaps worthy of an OscarJames boomed out, “Nobody Move Police Raid” andpromptly arrested Granddad while client Josie lookedvery innocent during these proceedings. The Mayor andher Consort were released from a very comfortableprison having boosted the fundraising no end. Needlessto say no charges were made as Granddad promised tobehave himself and added he was looking forward to theEaster Event at Laburnum with the Thetford and DistrictMotorcycle club.
‘Manager Pearl Mumford said “It has been a fantasticday, raising £1500 For Help the Heroes”, instigator KenRichards on behalf of all the clients added hisappreciation of the wonderful, hard working staff.
