A MESSAGE FROM FR. MURRAY

Merry Christmas! It is finally here! We welcome all of you who are returning home or visiting family. We are glad that you are with us again, or here for the first time. We have been waiting for this Christmas moment, and as a parish, a city, and a nation, it is a good time to reflect on the good things that have occurred in the last year. It is a singular time in our faith, because we celebrate an extraordinary truth, which is that God loves us so much that He becomes one of us, to walk alongside us. It is a period in which we see, through the lens of the Gospel, a hospitality shown to us by God which, up to that time, had never been considered. At that time, in fact, no one would believe it could happen. The further miracle is that God’s desire was not to come down and align only with the powerful and rich, but rather, to come to us who are hurting and broken and sometimes sinful. He came to be with us, to heal, feed, and teach us. That is so amazing to me that even after all these years of celebrating, I still catch my breath a little when I think of it all. Throughout the scenes in the Gospels at this time, there is a line that is sometimes overlooked, but so important. At the Annunciation, at the birth of Jesus, at the visit by the shepherds, and even in the Crucifixion and Resurrection scenes, Mary, who is always there, continues to “…reflect on these things in her heart.” In truth, I sometimes feel that this is the secret of Christmas and the Christian secret. We call Mary the first disciple and so she is. I believe that Mary serves to show us that reflecting on the things that are happening to her and seeing God’s hand in it, and more importantly, trusting God’s plan as it unfolds for her, is what continues to keep us all drawn to her and these great moments in our faith. What is also important about Mary is that she too, like her Son and like us, had great times of anonymity, where she simply was doing, most likely in this instance, all the things that young mothers and new wives do as their lives unfold. The difference is that she guarded the events of her life in her heart, reflected on them, and continued to deepen and strengthen her faith. We need to be people who are like her, remembering and reflecting and moving deeper into the mystery of who Jesus is and where He is in our lives, too. Our mysterious God, who delights in us, is always there, and so learning from Mary to sit and reflect and to notice God is a great way to see that God is present in the ebb and flow of our lives too. Last week, I reported on the numbers of the sacraments we celebrated this year. What I didn’t mention is the number of compliments we get at both our churches, on their beauty, their decoration, and the people and experiences that people have when they come here. Beautiful, healing, heartfelt funerals and lively, prayerful weddings, baptisms, and other celebrations are all the things that as a pastor, I hear reported fairly regularly. It takes all of us to do these things well and then to continue to grow as a place where Jesus Christ is proclaimed, received, and shared. Merry Christmas! May the gift of Jesus continue to be the reason we are here, and inspire us to draw others to Him. May He be a part of all your reflections in this Christmas season. Peace, Father Murray Facilities update: At a lively planning board meeting this past 13th of December, the idea of our school buildings being converted to housing was again discussed. The citizens of Salem seem to be in favor of this, but there were problems with the proposal’s language around new construction as it affects the city with this new “overlay district.” I will keep you posted on the process as it unfolds.

UN MENSAJE DEL PADRE MURRAY

¡Feliz Navidad!
