A MESSAGE FROM FR. MURRAY
The Christmas season is now ending, and so we move on to the ordinary work of learning about, growing into, and looking for opportunities to evangelize (send) the Gospel message to others. One way we move from season to season is through colors and decorations of the church. We move from the white and gold of celebration at Christmas time to Ordinary Time’s color of green, as we settle in for a few weeks before Lent and its color of penitent purple. Before we turn to Ordinary Time, though, we have one last gasp of Christmas revelry. We closed off this season with two important events. One was last week in which the Latino community celebrated “Little Christmas” by inviting children from around the area to the basement of Immaculate Conception for a big party. Pizza and soda were served to parents and families, and gifts were presented in celebration and imitation of the Magi in last week’s Gospel. They truly “went home by another way” with big smiles and appreciative hugs for the organizers of the program, including our own Lucy Corchado. This was truly a church and city event, as members of the city council, Representative Tucker, and many parishioners came together to sponsor this event. Even as we are taking down the Christmas decorations, it is still a time of extraordinary generosity. The other big event is this weekend, as we pause to say thank you to all the volunteer ministers in the parish. We say thanks to those who have worked in all the different ministries, from bingo workers to parking lot volunteers, some who work seasonally and some who work every week. Each person is called through their baptism to serve according to their gifts and talents. The Latino community also will be joining us for this humble celebration. At our parish, there are people who are involved in a number of ministries and some who are part of only one. It is not the number of hours one gives, it is the passion one brings that we hope to see and share. Next year, I hope we'll need to move our "thank you" event to a bigger venue because of the growing number of people who are part of existing and new ministries in the parish. Thanks again for all you do to make this parish great. Through the intercession of Mary, may you be blessed through your life and ministry. Peace, Father Murray Building news: This past week, we had a new roof put on the garage at IC. While the roofers were there, they saw a squirrel enter the church through the roof line. That led to an investigation and the discovery of the need for new fascia board and gutters (and an eviction notice for the squirrels). Fixing this problem has helped to raise the temperature in the chapel and back foyer, as all that cold air can now stay outside. Next up is new insulation for the chapel. Over Christmas and into the new year, there were several steam leaks in the rectory that have been now been repaired. (My skin was looking good there for a while.) Makes me wish I’d paid better attention in those heating and AC classes at seminary!
